2Speaker 2
00:00:19.74 – 00:00:21.90

Welcome to Pod Save America, I'm Jon Favreau.

4Speaker 4
00:00:22.06 – 00:00:24.98

I'm Interim University of Pennsylvania President Jon Lovett.

1Speaker 1
00:00:25.20 – 00:00:25.94

That's a good one.

00:00:26.12 – 00:00:26.68

I'm Tommy Vitor.

2Speaker 2
00:00:26.68 – 00:00:31.44

On today's show, Congress's last week of the year could be its biggest yet.

00:00:31.90 – 00:00:36.72

The president of UPenn resigns after disastrous testimony on campus anti-Semitism.

00:00:37.20 – 00:00:41.10

A woman flees Texas after the state's abortion ban puts her life in jeopardy.

00:00:41.46 – 00:00:46.14

And later, United Auto Workers President Sean Fain sits down with Tommy to discuss his union's

00:00:46.14 – 00:00:48.40

historic wins and what comes next.

00:00:48.74 – 00:00:54.62

But first, Donald Trump has somehow expanded his lead in the Iowa caucuses, which are now

00:00:54.62 – 00:00:55.84

just five weeks away.

00:00:55.84 – 00:01:01.20

The latest Des Moines Register poll has him at 51%, up from 43% in October.

00:01:01.68 – 00:01:05.72

Ron DeSantis is next at 19%, up slightly from 16% in October.

00:01:06.20 – 00:01:09.06

Nikki Haley's support is unchanged at 16%.

00:01:09.06 – 00:01:12.38

Vivek Ramaswamy's at 5%, Chris Christie at 4%.

00:01:12.38 – 00:01:17.06

And I learned from this poll that Asa Hutchinson is still in the race and polling at 1%.

1Speaker 1
00:01:17.06 – 00:01:18.32

That was shocking to me too.

2Speaker 2
00:01:18.44 – 00:01:19.56

Asa, Ada Hutchinson.

1Speaker 1
00:01:19.80 – 00:01:20.74

Who's giving him money?

4Speaker 4
00:01:22.10 – 00:01:23.10

Who's picking him?

2Speaker 2
00:01:23.34 – 00:01:23.98

Who's picking him?

00:01:23.98 – 00:01:25.60

Maybe one respondent.

00:01:25.70 – 00:01:25.92

Who knows?

00:01:26.12 – 00:01:32.20

So, this is the largest recorded lead, this close to a competitive Republican caucus ever.

00:01:32.94 – 00:01:36.58

Poll also shows 70% of Trump supporters say their minds are made up.

00:01:37.08 – 00:01:42.64

You guys see anything in this poll that the DeSantis or Haley campaigns might find even

00:01:43.18 – 00:01:44.08

mildly hopeful?

4Speaker 4
00:01:44.36 – 00:01:45.06

Can we just...

00:01:45.74 – 00:01:46.22

I tried.

00:01:46.48 – 00:01:51.70

I can say no, but before we even get to that, the domination...

00:01:51.70 – 00:01:53.62

So, Trump leads every age group.

00:01:54.02 – 00:01:55.74

He leads with Republicans and Independents.

00:01:55.92 – 00:01:58.10

He leads with people with a college degree and people without.

00:01:58.42 – 00:02:00.06

He leads across every income bracket.

00:02:00.28 – 00:02:01.40

He leads with Evangelicals.

00:02:01.46 – 00:02:03.96

He leads with rural people, suburban people, city people.

00:02:04.26 – 00:02:06.20

He leads every group.

00:02:06.54 – 00:02:08.56

Even the group where he does the worst.

2Speaker 2
00:02:08.94 – 00:02:09.52

College educated.

4Speaker 4
00:02:10.00 – 00:02:12.88

He's beating Haley and DeSantis in those groups.

2Speaker 2
00:02:13.10 – 00:02:14.02

Non-Republicans.

00:02:14.52 – 00:02:17.94

He's doing the worst, but he's still leading among Independents.

4Speaker 4
00:02:18.00 – 00:02:18.86

Yes, among Independents.

00:02:19.12 – 00:02:19.86

She's doing better.

2Speaker 2
00:02:20.18 – 00:02:20.80

She's closest on that.

00:02:20.94 – 00:02:21.08

Yeah.

00:02:21.08 – 00:02:21.96

But even Independents.

00:02:22.14 – 00:02:22.20

Brutal.

00:02:22.50 – 00:02:24.28

Sounds like Republicans want Donald Trump.

1Speaker 1
00:02:24.74 – 00:02:28.54

There is not a sliver of good news in this poll for anyone not named Trump.

00:02:29.12 – 00:02:31.50

He moved plus eight from October.

00:02:32.26 – 00:02:35.70

He's the highest percentage of people who say he's their first choice, second choice,

00:02:35.74 – 00:02:39.10

or actively considering him, so he's the biggest sort of universe of support.

4Speaker 4
00:02:39.38 – 00:02:39.54

Yeah.

00:02:39.60 – 00:02:45.70

If you wanted to find one thing in this poll, you could say, okay, if you look at everyone

00:02:45.70 – 00:02:50.18

that would make DeSantis first choice or second choice or would consider him, he's doing better

00:02:50.18 – 00:02:51.42

there than Haley.

00:02:51.76 – 00:02:57.12

But then you realize, actually, that's a place where he's gone down since the last poll.

00:02:57.30 – 00:03:03.80

At least he has lost people, even in that big, wide group, to Trump since October.

1Speaker 1
00:03:04.00 – 00:03:10.30

49% of caucus goers say they've made up their mind, but 70% of Trump supporters say they've

00:03:10.30 – 00:03:11.36

made up their mind.

00:03:11.78 – 00:03:14.34

Is electability numbers against Biden improved?

00:03:14.96 – 00:03:16.60

I mean, it's just a disaster.

2Speaker 2
00:03:17.28 – 00:03:17.52

Yeah.

00:03:17.52 – 00:03:21.20

I mean, I think what it shows is the people who dropped out, even though they didn't have

00:03:21.20 – 00:03:24.58

much support, that support largely went to Donald Trump.

00:03:24.78 – 00:03:26.94

Maybe a little bit went to Ron DeSantis.

00:03:27.24 – 00:03:32.02

I think Nikki Haley has probably maxed out on the anti-Trump vote, at least in Iowa.

00:03:32.30 – 00:03:36.80

New Hampshire, there's probably a bigger anti-Trump vote among Republicans, but it goes to show

00:03:36.80 – 00:03:39.40

how she doesn't have a ton of room to grow.

00:03:40.64 – 00:03:45.80

And Dan's made this point, but if not Trump, then DeSantis is still the only candidate

00:03:45.80 – 00:03:49.76

who can at least have some support from people who really, really like Trump.

00:03:50.08 – 00:03:54.34

I think the number that says it all is, you mentioned the electability, the way they asked

00:03:54.34 – 00:04:00.42

the question, 73% of Republican caucus goers said they think Trump can win an election

00:04:00.42 – 00:04:02.98

against Biden despite his legal challenges.

00:04:03.72 – 00:04:04.20

73%.

00:04:04.20 – 00:04:05.40

So there goes the electability argument.

00:04:06.26 – 00:04:13.16

And honestly, even if the other candidates tried to prove those voters wrong, I mean,

00:04:13.72 – 00:04:19.92

it's not easy to do so when poll after poll after poll now shows Donald Trump leading

00:04:19.92 – 00:04:24.34

Joe Biden, both in the general election, that was the Wall Street Journal poll that just

00:04:24.34 – 00:04:29.46

came out over the weekend, in states, there were CNN polls of Michigan where Trump's leading

00:04:29.46 – 00:04:32.62

by 10 on Joe Biden, Georgia, where he's leading by five.

00:04:33.08 – 00:04:38.02

So we're not going to have another debate over whether the polls are to be believed

00:04:38.02 – 00:04:42.12

this far up from the election, but if you're a Republican caucus goer and you really like

00:04:42.12 – 00:04:47.18

Trump and you had been concerned at one point about electability, why would you be concerned

00:04:47.18 – 00:04:48.20

about electability at this point?

00:04:48.36 – 00:04:48.48

Yeah.

4Speaker 4
00:04:48.56 – 00:04:51.76

One thing that jumped out at me too, I think, look, we talk a lot about, and rightly so,

00:04:51.88 – 00:04:56.40

just the kind of abysmal performance of people like DeSantis, but there is a structural problem

00:04:56.40 – 00:04:57.20

that they're dealing with.

00:04:57.34 – 00:05:00.66

So one thing that was interesting is there is a different, even though sort of DeSantis

00:05:01.08 – 00:05:04.64

and Haley, they're both kind of stuck where they're stuck, you know, everyone, the Haley

00:05:04.64 – 00:05:10.20

boomlet seems to have not done too much booming, but there's a difference in their polling

00:05:10.78 – 00:05:12.00

among DeSantis supporters.

00:05:12.62 – 00:05:13.80

People think Trump can win.

00:05:13.90 – 00:05:17.96

They say 59% think he can win, a minority thinks that he, that that is impossible.

00:05:18.62 – 00:05:19.78

For Haley, it's the opposite.

00:05:19.94 – 00:05:24.08

So Haley has consolidated the anti-Trump vote and DeSantis is doing well with people that

00:05:24.08 – 00:05:25.92

still like Trump, but are open to an alternative.

00:05:26.04 – 00:05:29.84

But what's interesting is how both of those paths have not worked, right?

00:05:29.86 – 00:05:33.42

Like there's not enough of an anti-Trump vote to rally around Haley to give her anything

00:05:33.42 – 00:05:34.00

that she can do.

00:05:34.06 – 00:05:37.62

And kind of trying to get people who like Trump to switch is basically impossible because

00:05:38.18 – 00:05:39.98

if you like Trump, he's right there.

2Speaker 2
00:05:40.52 – 00:05:40.60

Yeah.

00:05:40.80 – 00:05:44.84

All you really need to know about this is the quote that NBC had in their write-up from

00:05:45.74 – 00:05:51.10

one Republican caucus goer who said, they can promise me a million dollars, I tell them

00:05:51.10 – 00:05:51.68

to keep it.

00:05:51.86 – 00:05:53.06

And I would still vote for Trump.

1Speaker 1
00:05:53.78 – 00:05:54.18

Yeah.

00:05:54.28 – 00:05:54.80

I like that person.

4Speaker 4
00:05:55.12 – 00:05:55.34

Okay.

00:05:55.54 – 00:05:56.72

And Bergen was like, I tried it.

1Speaker 1
00:05:57.38 – 00:05:59.72

Spin zone for Ron DeSantis and Haley.

00:06:00.48 – 00:06:01.88

Here's one thing you could try.

00:06:02.56 – 00:06:04.50

Actually run against the person winning, step one.

00:06:05.06 – 00:06:08.74

Step two, there may be is an expectations management challenge now for Trump.

2Speaker 2
00:06:09.06 – 00:06:10.94

So they lose by like 20 and then they're like, ooh.

1Speaker 1
00:06:11.06 – 00:06:14.42

So I was talking to a political scientist in Iowa saying, look, Trump's basically an

00:06:14.42 – 00:06:14.80

incumbent.

00:06:15.42 – 00:06:18.82

Incumbents usually win the Iowa caucuses by like 60, 70, right?

00:06:18.86 – 00:06:21.54

They have a much higher total than 50% of the vote.

00:06:22.08 – 00:06:23.16

Maybe you could spin that.

00:06:23.94 – 00:06:28.26

Maybe I don't know, maybe if you gain on him in this last month, I'm trying here, I'm flailing

00:06:28.26 – 00:06:28.48

here.

00:06:28.54 – 00:06:29.34

Much like them.

2Speaker 2
00:06:29.54 – 00:06:30.56

I appreciate you trying.

1Speaker 1
00:06:30.64 – 00:06:32.26

It's not about winning the Iowa caucuses.

00:06:32.26 – 00:06:37.22

It's about how you are perceived to have done by an arbitrary jury of your non peers called

00:06:37.22 – 00:06:38.76

the press corps and the pundit class.

2Speaker 2
00:06:39.26 – 00:06:41.06

And then the voters in New Hampshire, right?

00:06:41.12 – 00:06:45.94

So like I do think at this point I'm looking beyond Iowa as I'm sure Nikki Haley and Ron

00:06:45.94 – 00:06:49.04

DeSantis are like, I don't know how you make up this much ground in five weeks.

00:06:49.14 – 00:06:53.54

I have not seen that happen certainly in our lifetime from anyone this close to the caucus.

00:06:54.04 – 00:06:59.98

But if DeSantis stays in and Haley stays in after Iowa and they go to New Hampshire, I

00:06:59.98 – 00:07:02.48

do think there's a bigger independent vote there.

00:07:02.56 – 00:07:05.16

There's a bigger college educated vote there that we know for sure.

00:07:05.62 – 00:07:08.16

And there's most likely a bigger anti-Trump vote there.

00:07:08.30 – 00:07:13.14

And so then if all these voters wake up and say, oh, Trump's running away with it, then

00:07:13.14 – 00:07:13.86

no, who knows?

00:07:13.94 – 00:07:16.52

Maybe you get more in the mix in New Hampshire, but I'm doubtful.

1Speaker 1
00:07:16.70 – 00:07:22.48

Chris Christie skipping Iowa and almost tying Vivek Ramaswamy has got to be tough for team

00:07:22.48 – 00:07:22.84

Vivek.

2Speaker 2
00:07:23.66 – 00:07:24.02

Yeah.

00:07:24.40 – 00:07:24.64

Yeah.

00:07:24.66 – 00:07:26.66

Well, there's a lot of tough things for team Vivek these days.

00:07:28.80 – 00:07:33.24

DeSantis seems to be sticking with his strategy of a half-heartedly criticizing Trump on Twitter.

00:07:33.96 – 00:07:38.94

Latest salvo came after Donald Trump told this bizarre and I'm sure a hundred percent

00:07:38.94 – 00:07:43.10

true story at the New York Young Republican Club Gala Saturday night.

00:07:43.44 – 00:07:44.88

I saw the clips from this, I'm like, what?

00:07:45.28 – 00:07:46.52

Trump's dressed up in a tux.

00:07:46.56 – 00:07:48.30

He's in New York for a gala.

00:07:48.44 – 00:07:48.84

What the hell?

00:07:49.08 – 00:07:53.72

That's, that is the sign of someone who is not worried about any competition in the Republican

00:07:53.72 – 00:07:54.10

primary.

00:07:54.46 – 00:07:55.48

Let's listen to a clip.

3Speaker 3
00:07:55.48 – 00:08:01.36

And a general who's a fantastic general actually said to me, sir, I've been on the battlefield.

00:08:01.68 – 00:08:03.86

Men have gone down on my left and on my right.

00:08:03.94 – 00:08:09.02

I stood on hills where soldiers were killed, but I believe the bravest thing I've ever

00:08:09.02 – 00:08:14.06

seen was the night you went onto that stage with Hillary Clinton after what happened.

00:08:14.58 – 00:08:17.78

And then that woman asked you the first question about it.

00:08:18.58 – 00:08:21.42

And I said, locker room talk.

4Speaker 4
00:08:21.60 – 00:08:22.56

It's locker room.

3Speaker 3
00:08:22.80 – 00:08:22.82

Talk.

4Speaker 4
00:08:22.92 – 00:08:23.80

What the hell?

00:08:23.80 – 00:08:25.08

What are you talking about?

3Speaker 3
00:08:25.74 – 00:08:26.72

Locker room talk.

2Speaker 2
00:08:27.72 – 00:08:32.44

I honestly have to hand it to Trump for like not cracking up while telling that story.

00:08:33.66 – 00:08:33.76

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:08:34.04 – 00:08:36.34

The Sir story is an entire genre.

4Speaker 4
00:08:36.80 – 00:08:37.02

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:08:37.36 – 00:08:42.34

He tells so many made up generals coming to him and saying, sir, weeping over things.

4Speaker 4
00:08:42.54 – 00:08:42.94

It's awesome.

00:08:43.16 – 00:08:43.32

Yeah.

00:08:43.42 – 00:08:44.30

It's an awesome category.

2Speaker 2
00:08:44.30 – 00:08:45.82

They just walk up and be like, you're so awesome.

00:08:45.88 – 00:08:47.10

I just need to tell you that.

4Speaker 4
00:08:47.22 – 00:08:49.30

They're always, sometimes they're hot pilots.

1Speaker 1
00:08:50.32 – 00:08:51.32

More often than not.

00:08:51.36 – 00:08:51.42

Strapping.

00:08:51.62 – 00:08:51.94

Big.

4Speaker 4
00:08:52.94 – 00:08:57.54

The bravest guy I've ever seen weeping, crumbling in tears because of how grateful he was to

00:08:57.54 – 00:08:57.92

me.

2Speaker 2
00:08:58.62 – 00:09:04.86

So in response to this weird story, DeSantis accuses Trump of denigrating military service

00:09:04.86 – 00:09:08.86

and then says in his Twitter post, quote, debating isn't brave.

00:09:09.44 – 00:09:11.48

It's the bare minimum any candidate should do.

00:09:11.80 – 00:09:14.80

Hiding from debates, on the other hand, is an example of cowardice.

00:09:15.36 – 00:09:18.08

Meanwhile, here's what Trump said about DeSantis on Saturday night.

00:09:18.24 – 00:09:19.08

You know what I love?

3Speaker 3
00:09:19.56 – 00:09:24.20

I love when they say, we really want to run against Donald Trump.

2Speaker 2
00:09:24.30 – 00:09:25.26

That's the one we want.

3Speaker 3
00:09:25.62 – 00:09:27.46

How did they do in 2016, by the way?

1Speaker 1
00:09:27.80 – 00:09:29.40

We want Donald Trump.

3Speaker 3
00:09:30.50 – 00:09:37.10

We don't want to run against Ron DeSanctimonious with his high heels and his bobblehead bullshit.

00:09:37.34 – 00:09:40.54

You know, it looks like a bobblehead doll.

2Speaker 2
00:09:41.42 – 00:09:42.80

That Trump's like Netflix special.

4Speaker 4
00:09:43.06 – 00:09:43.50

Yeah.

00:09:43.68 – 00:09:46.20

He does some anti-woke stuff.

00:09:46.36 – 00:09:47.24

He does cancel culture.

00:09:47.24 – 00:09:47.86

He's crazy.

00:09:48.12 – 00:09:48.74

That's his.

00:09:49.00 – 00:09:50.30

Put it right up next to Chappelle.

00:09:50.44 – 00:09:50.70

Why not?

2Speaker 2
00:09:51.92 – 00:09:57.32

It's just like Ron DeSantis gets up, he's like, I'm going to really take this no character

00:09:57.32 – 00:09:59.08

limit for a spin here on Twitter.

00:09:59.14 – 00:10:01.76

I'm going to write this long statement that no one's going to care about.

00:10:01.98 – 00:10:03.24

I'm going to call Trump a coward.

00:10:03.60 – 00:10:08.26

But instead of saying it in front of a camera or in front of a crowd or at a debate, I'm

00:10:08.26 – 00:10:09.06

just going to tweet it.

4Speaker 4
00:10:09.70 – 00:10:13.32

Trump is like, I'm going to fuck these libtards five ways till Sunday.

00:10:13.46 – 00:10:14.74

They don't know who they're dealing with.

00:10:14.76 – 00:10:16.40

And DeSantis is like, it's home.

00:10:16.92 – 00:10:18.48

It's to whom they're dealing.

1Speaker 1
00:10:20.54 – 00:10:26.92

Meanwhile, the Trump campaign is attacking Ron DeSantis's wife and accusing her of planning

00:10:26.92 – 00:10:27.66

voter fraud.

4Speaker 4
00:10:28.16 – 00:10:29.50

Well, she gave an interview.

00:10:29.66 – 00:10:30.52

Did you see what she said?

00:10:30.60 – 00:10:31.24

Yeah, she screwed up.

00:10:31.48 – 00:10:32.18

She fucked that up.

00:10:32.26 – 00:10:34.42

She's like, hey, everybody come to Iowa and vote.

00:10:34.46 – 00:10:35.62

I was like, I don't think that's right.

2Speaker 2
00:10:35.90 – 00:10:37.42

So we should tell people to volunteer.

00:10:37.82 – 00:10:42.34

Yeah, she said people, you don't have to be, you don't have to be a resident of Iowa to

00:10:42.34 – 00:10:45.42

participate is the problem there in the caucuses.

00:10:45.42 – 00:10:47.64

So people can descend from all these other states.

00:10:47.76 – 00:10:52.12

And what she said she meant is that people can come to the state and volunteer and knock

00:10:52.12 – 00:10:53.44

on doors, which of course they can.

00:10:54.34 – 00:10:57.30

But you think Donald Trump's going to take it that way or anyone else?

4Speaker 4
00:10:57.44 – 00:10:59.18

Not the first time people have bussed people in.

00:10:59.38 – 00:10:59.78

Yeah, we know.

1Speaker 1
00:11:00.12 – 00:11:00.22

We know.

00:11:00.66 – 00:11:02.22

From the Clinton playbook over there.

00:11:02.38 – 00:11:02.96

Mark Penn.

00:11:03.20 – 00:11:03.56

Love it.

4Speaker 4
00:11:03.72 – 00:11:04.38

Listen, listen.

00:11:04.64 – 00:11:06.60

Look, look, the Iowa polls said what they said.

00:11:06.64 – 00:11:07.20

Then all of a sudden.

1Speaker 1
00:11:07.40 – 00:11:08.24

It's just so funny.

00:11:08.36 – 00:11:13.56

Like, again, Trump is literally attacking Ron DeSantis's wife in the most personal terms

00:11:13.56 – 00:11:14.02

possible.

00:11:14.22 – 00:11:18.46

And the only sort of little lane that DeSantis thinks he can carve out and safely criticize

00:11:18.46 – 00:11:20.64

Trump about his participation in the debate.

00:11:20.98 – 00:11:21.70

It's so pathetic.

2Speaker 2
00:11:22.18 – 00:11:25.14

Well, and he wants to call, I mean, because it's the whole, you know, Trump is strong,

00:11:25.22 – 00:11:26.10

so you got to call him weak.

00:11:26.24 – 00:11:30.20

It doesn't work to just be like, I'm going to tweet quietly that he's weak.

00:11:30.38 – 00:11:30.90

It doesn't matter.

00:11:31.04 – 00:11:31.44

That'll do.

00:11:31.58 – 00:11:32.52

That'll unlock the.

4Speaker 4
00:11:32.94 – 00:11:36.44

It's just everybody's reading DeSantis exactly for who he is.

00:11:36.46 – 00:11:37.10

And it just doesn't.

00:11:37.18 – 00:11:37.76

It just doesn't work.

00:11:37.80 – 00:11:41.38

And I do think like going back to the poll, like the fact that more Republican caucus

00:11:41.38 – 00:11:46.92

goers in Iowa believe Trump is electable today than a few months ago is such an indictment

00:11:46.92 – 00:11:50.50

of the way these campaigns have tried to fight against Trump because that's the whole ball

00:11:50.50 – 00:11:51.12

game for people.

2Speaker 2
00:11:51.28 – 00:11:53.84

It's also the, I think, I think it's the polls, it's the polls.

00:11:54.34 – 00:11:57.12

It's like he's beating Joe Biden, so it's like, why?

00:11:57.66 – 00:11:58.76

They also suck.

4Speaker 4
00:11:59.10 – 00:12:02.50

They, uh, DeSantis, but they haven't been willing to make any kind of argument around

00:12:02.50 – 00:12:03.24

the felonies, right?

00:12:03.28 – 00:12:03.60

Like that.

00:12:03.68 – 00:12:07.84

The fact that those felonies have not changed this calculus at all, it's like it's staggering.

00:12:07.92 – 00:12:10.06

And so all of these, oh, he's too weak to debate me.

00:12:10.06 – 00:12:12.92

Like the, the, how dare you, Mr. Trump?

00:12:13.04 – 00:12:14.58

It doesn't work with the country.

00:12:14.58 – 00:12:19.38

It's sure as fuck not going to work with Republicans who have become basically full blown fucking

00:12:19.38 – 00:12:19.86

animals.

00:12:20.00 – 00:12:23.12

Like, how dare you, Mr. Trump, it's our troops that are brave.

00:12:23.14 – 00:12:24.12

Like when does that work?

00:12:24.16 – 00:12:28.50

It didn't work with fucking, he did the gold star thing at the, at the convention in 2016.

00:12:28.50 – 00:12:30.44

It's not going to work with Republicans in Iowa.

2Speaker 2
00:12:30.62 – 00:12:34.52

And now DeSantis is starting to do like a polling analysis, you know, he told some reporters

00:12:34.52 – 00:12:40.00

in Iowa that, uh, if it's Trump, Trump's going to inspire higher democratic turnout and Trump's

00:12:40.00 – 00:12:44.14

going to bring out all the Democrats if he, if he's the nominee and DeSantis won't bring

00:12:44.14 – 00:12:47.36

out as many Democrats to vote against, to vote against him.

1Speaker 1
00:12:47.82 – 00:12:49.20

Go plant 538, man.

00:12:49.30 – 00:12:50.20

What are you doing?

4Speaker 4
00:12:50.42 – 00:12:52.94

Well, I would just think like, we've kind of been through a version of this, right?

00:12:52.96 – 00:12:56.06

Like when we were first, I remember when, when like we were first thinking about like,

00:12:56.12 – 00:12:59.60

oh, who's going to challenge DeSantis is like, oh, is Ron DeSantis a bigger threat than Donald

00:12:59.60 – 00:13:00.24

Trump in general?

00:13:00.32 – 00:13:03.12

And at this point, like watching the way DeSantis kind of fucking...

2Speaker 2
00:13:03.68 – 00:13:08.12

He's doing the worst against Joe Biden in these trial heats, uh, above Haley and Trump.

00:13:08.34 – 00:13:08.90

He's doing the worst.

1Speaker 1
00:13:08.90 – 00:13:13.98

Maybe because he's stuck in Georgia, debating the wrong guy, fighting with Gavin Newsom

00:13:13.98 – 00:13:14.94

in Atlanta.

4Speaker 4
00:13:16.32 – 00:13:18.40

He can try store clerks next.

2Speaker 2
00:13:19.22 – 00:13:22.80

Well, we did get one December surprise over the weekend that could shake up the final

00:13:22.80 – 00:13:28.54

weeks of the caucuses, a real authentic actual pee tape, but not from Donald Trump.

00:13:28.72 – 00:13:33.58

During a Twitter spaces live stream with Elon Musk accused rapist Andrew Tate and the newly

00:13:33.58 – 00:13:38.06

reinstated Alex Jones, Vivek Ramaswamy forgot to turn off his mic.

00:13:38.06 – 00:13:39.36

While taking a leak.

00:13:39.86 – 00:13:46.76

Uh, you know, humans in America, humans in Africa, Asia, and everywhere else.

3Speaker 3
00:13:49.18 – 00:13:51.82

Yeah, that's Vivek, that's your phone, Vivek.

2Speaker 2
00:13:51.86 – 00:13:52.74

I'm not able to mute you.

00:13:53.66 – 00:13:54.10

Go ahead, Elon.

00:13:54.84 – 00:13:56.12

Um, sorry about that.

00:13:56.40 – 00:13:59.10

So, um, well, I hope you feel better.

3Speaker 3
00:13:59.10 – 00:13:59.66

I feel great.

4Speaker 4
00:13:59.74 – 00:14:00.14

Thank you.

00:14:00.54 – 00:14:01.44

Sorry about that, guys.

2Speaker 2
00:14:02.00 – 00:14:03.92

I'll tell you, I'd rather hear him pee than talk.

00:14:04.40 – 00:14:05.56

I think I'll take the pee.

4Speaker 4
00:14:05.74 – 00:14:06.92

My boys come out for water sports.

00:14:07.66 – 00:14:08.36

What a world.

00:14:08.78 – 00:14:09.92

Happy, happy holidays, everybody.

1Speaker 1
00:14:10.54 – 00:14:11.70

Alex Jones is like, sword fight.

00:14:12.16 – 00:14:13.80

Uh, I do like that he just called it out.

00:14:13.86 – 00:14:16.98

I mean, I, I accidentally tuned into this Twitter spaces yesterday.

4Speaker 4
00:14:17.26 – 00:14:17.76

I tripped.

2Speaker 2
00:14:17.96 – 00:14:20.66

You slip on a slip on a keystroke there.

1Speaker 1
00:14:20.74 – 00:14:23.46

It was Alex Jones, Andrew Tate, Vivek.

00:14:23.92 – 00:14:27.74

Uh, it was like Mike Flynn was on truly the worst people.

2Speaker 2
00:14:27.74 – 00:14:28.66

A future secretary of state.

00:14:28.86 – 00:14:30.72

It was, it was the Trump cabinet for the second term.

1Speaker 1
00:14:30.74 – 00:14:31.54

The worst people in politics.

00:14:31.66 – 00:14:35.84

I tuned in and they were complaining about, uh, the possible creation of an unelected world

00:14:35.84 – 00:14:38.24

government in Davos and the world economic forum.

00:14:38.36 – 00:14:39.68

It was exactly what you would expect.

00:14:39.82 – 00:14:40.42

So I turned it off.

2Speaker 2
00:14:41.34 – 00:14:44.94

I meant to tell you when you just brought up the, uh, Newsome to Santa's debate, did

00:14:44.94 – 00:14:50.54

you see or hear that at the gala on Saturday night with the Trump was at the Republican

00:14:50.54 – 00:14:53.50

gala, he did say that Newsome, uh, won the debate.

00:14:53.66 – 00:14:53.98

Oh, nice.

00:14:54.12 – 00:14:55.32

Which is what you predicted for that.

4Speaker 4
00:14:55.42 – 00:14:55.70

Yes.

1Speaker 1
00:14:55.82 – 00:14:57.38

That's the meanest thing you can say.

2Speaker 2
00:15:10.10 – 00:15:10.70

All right.

00:15:10.76 – 00:15:11.66

It's a big week in Congress.

00:15:11.96 – 00:15:14.26

Uh, this is their last scheduled week of 2023.

00:15:14.34 – 00:15:17.54

Uh, and there's still nowhere close to an agreement on a bill that's supposed to include

00:15:17.54 – 00:15:23.30

$60 billion for Ukraine, $14 billion for Israel, a few hundred million dollars in humanitarian

00:15:23.30 – 00:15:27.74

assistance for the Palestinians and some combination of funding and policy to address the migrant

00:15:27.74 – 00:15:29.02

crisis at the Southern border.

00:15:29.34 – 00:15:33.56

Republicans are still saying they will not vote for Ukraine aid without new border policy.

00:15:33.56 – 00:15:37.88

And even though Democrats and Biden have said they're open to some new limits on asylum,

00:15:38.46 – 00:15:43.14

some of the latest Republican demands include ankle bracelets for children detained at the

00:15:43.14 – 00:15:47.78

border and banning people from even applying for asylum, closing down the entire border.

00:15:48.24 – 00:15:53.34

Meanwhile, Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky is making a special trip to DC to plead with

00:15:53.34 – 00:15:54.22

Congress for support.

00:15:54.52 – 00:15:59.84

Though Senator Langsford, the lead Republican negotiator just told CNN that, uh, nothing

00:15:59.84 – 00:16:03.92

Zelensky says will change Republican minds and that they probably won't be able to get a deal

00:16:03.92 – 00:16:04.64

by the end of the week.

1Speaker 1
00:16:05.20 – 00:16:05.42

Nice.

2Speaker 2
00:16:05.66 – 00:16:10.24

So it does look like, uh, I mean, I guess that doesn't mean that Ukraine aid is dead

00:16:10.24 – 00:16:15.46

for good, but it does seem like it's not, uh, it's not going to happen in 2023 because

00:16:15.46 – 00:16:16.42

they don't have time.

4Speaker 4
00:16:17.42 – 00:16:17.96

Um, yeah.

00:16:17.98 – 00:16:22.40

I mean, so Murphy said something like if I were cynical, I would say they're using the

00:16:22.40 – 00:16:24.18

border to make sure we can't pass Ukraine aid.

00:16:24.32 – 00:16:24.52

Hmm.

00:16:24.70 – 00:16:28.26

Uh, but I'm not cynical, which I think was, uh, sounds pretty cynical.

00:16:28.26 – 00:16:32.94

Sounded like a way of saying without saying that he's, uh, pretty worried about the whole

00:16:32.94 – 00:16:33.18

thing.

2Speaker 2
00:16:33.68 – 00:16:38.44

Don't you think that the Republicans could have said that nothing Zelensky says will

00:16:38.44 – 00:16:41.02

change their mind before Zelensky got on a plane to come?

4Speaker 4
00:16:41.50 – 00:16:42.86

Pretty fucking rude, actually.

2Speaker 2
00:16:43.10 – 00:16:44.22

It's like he's in the middle of a war.

4Speaker 4
00:16:44.22 – 00:16:45.14

It is a real war.

00:16:45.24 – 00:16:48.38

I know you're, I know it's, I know it's on television for you, but it's an actual war

1Speaker 1
00:16:48.38 – 00:16:49.74

for him.

2Speaker 2
00:16:49.76 – 00:16:56.18

I still don't see how this is going to get done even in 2024 because, I mean, Murphy

00:16:56.18 – 00:17:00.58

on Chris Murphy, who's the lead democratic negotiator was on meet the press and he basically

00:17:00.58 – 00:17:04.26

like outlined what a compromise on the border could look like.

00:17:04.70 – 00:17:07.70

He said, we're not going to support anything that shuts down the border completely to people

00:17:07.70 – 00:17:10.12

who legitimately are coming here to have their lives rescued.

00:17:10.32 – 00:17:14.48

But we are willing to talk about tightening some of the rules so that you don't have 10,000

00:17:14.48 – 00:17:15.42

people arriving today.

00:17:15.78 – 00:17:20.66

But like, I don't know, I don't know what the Republican incentives are to, uh, political

00:17:20.66 – 00:17:22.80

incentives are to go along with a compromise like that.

1Speaker 1
00:17:22.82 – 00:17:23.36

I don't either.

00:17:23.36 – 00:17:27.02

I mean, it, it seems like they've all just gotten to a place politically where they feel

00:17:27.02 – 00:17:32.98

like being, uh, in support of Ukraine funding is bad politics for them with the base because

00:17:32.98 – 00:17:38.52

Trump has demagogued it because it's become this right wing, uh, cause to oppose supporting

00:17:38.52 – 00:17:38.90

Ukraine.

00:17:38.90 – 00:17:43.14

And it just means that over time that the Ukrainian military is going to slowly run

00:17:43.14 – 00:17:44.28

out of weapons.

00:17:44.34 – 00:17:47.76

I mean, literally like they're, they're gonna, their air defense system is pretty good right

00:17:47.76 – 00:17:51.54

now, but over the couple of months they will run out of interceptor missiles.

00:17:51.64 – 00:17:52.98

The things will slowly break down.

00:17:52.98 – 00:17:55.28

They'll stop being able to defend from these drone attacks.

00:17:55.36 – 00:17:58.84

I mean, people will die because they're not able to intercept these things.

00:17:59.04 – 00:18:02.90

And so, I mean, it's not going to be like a precipitous, you know, one day they just

00:18:02.90 – 00:18:05.84

won't be able to fight anymore, but they're going to have to change their strategy.

00:18:05.98 – 00:18:07.90

They'll probably have to leave territory.

00:18:08.36 – 00:18:13.80

Uh, you'll have Putin feeling like he's ascendant and he'll be looking to our election

00:18:13.80 – 00:18:18.84

and thinking, boy, if I can press now and wait till Donald Trump's around, uh, then

00:18:18.84 – 00:18:20.72

they'll have nobody in my way.

00:18:20.90 – 00:18:22.14

I mean, this is a very bad setup.

2Speaker 2
00:18:22.14 – 00:18:23.14

And Trump will pull out of NATO.

1Speaker 1
00:18:23.58 – 00:18:23.70

Yeah.

00:18:23.82 – 00:18:27.68

Well, they're, they're certainly threatening that or talking about it.

2Speaker 2
00:18:27.80 – 00:18:27.94

Yeah.

00:18:28.32 – 00:18:36.30

And look, the minority of Republicans, mostly in the Senate who are for Ukraine aid still

00:18:36.30 – 00:18:43.20

know that Republican voters are in favor of much, much tougher immigration and border

00:18:43.20 – 00:18:43.72

policies.

00:18:44.00 – 00:18:49.14

And so even though, even the ones who are for Ukraine aid, I don't know what the political

00:18:49.14 – 00:18:54.96

incentive for them is to compromise on the border when they know they've got the issue

00:18:54.96 – 00:18:57.40

and that their base wants tougher policies.

4Speaker 4
00:18:57.90 – 00:18:57.92

Right.

00:18:58.00 – 00:19:02.30

Especially because even if they could get, even if they get a compromise, which by the

00:19:02.30 – 00:19:03.72

way we say is still possible, right?

00:19:03.88 – 00:19:09.10

Like deals have come out of more intransigent situations than this, that even if they get

00:19:09.10 – 00:19:14.52

a deal that has incredibly restrictive changes to border policy, there'll be enough Republicans

00:19:14.52 – 00:19:19.00

calling it a capitulation and a failure to kind of mitigate any political game they could

00:19:19.00 – 00:19:19.22

have.

00:19:19.34 – 00:19:19.38

Right.

00:19:19.40 – 00:19:24.46

Because as you said, like Republicans in Congress are more in favor of Ukraine aid than Republican

00:19:24.46 – 00:19:24.92

voters.

00:19:25.04 – 00:19:28.20

So there are Republicans who want to vote for aid and are looking for a political way

00:19:28.20 – 00:19:28.98

to do so.

00:19:29.10 – 00:19:32.94

Border security is a way for them to get there, but not if doing it, then all of a sudden

00:19:32.94 – 00:19:39.96

all these house Republicans who say, if it's not our bill, it's basically, it's basically

00:19:39.96 – 00:19:43.62

a kind of amnesty or whatever they're going to say, all of a sudden they're doing something

00:19:43.62 – 00:19:47.30

to help their politics and their own members are going to make it seem as though they've

00:19:47.30 – 00:19:48.08

capitulated to Democrats.

2Speaker 2
00:19:48.62 – 00:19:48.80

Yeah.

00:19:48.94 – 00:19:54.36

Like even theoretically, if you get some kind of a deal with Republicans in the Senate who

00:19:54.36 – 00:19:59.26

were, again, theoretically a slightly more moderate on a border stuff and might want

00:19:59.26 – 00:20:03.46

to compromise that kind of deal, it seems very difficult for that deal to get through

00:20:03.46 – 00:20:03.82

the house.

00:20:04.14 – 00:20:08.40

Then I think the question is like, did they try to split Israel aid off at some point

00:20:08.40 – 00:20:09.12

and do that?

00:20:09.12 – 00:20:10.56

I don't know.

00:20:10.78 – 00:20:17.84

Like, I think the idea, again, that the Democrats in the Senate should all vote for aid to Israel

00:20:17.84 – 00:20:20.70

with no conditions is lunacy at this point.

1Speaker 1
00:20:21.16 – 00:20:21.46

I do too.

00:20:21.56 – 00:20:23.96

I think they probably will, but I absolutely think it's outrageous.

00:20:24.16 – 00:20:28.94

I talked to Senator Welch last week from Vermont and he was talking about all the conditions

00:20:28.94 – 00:20:29.58

he wants to see.

00:20:29.68 – 00:20:35.84

I mean, there's definitely growing concern about the number of airstrikes by the IDF

00:20:35.84 – 00:20:37.06

and the need to condition aid.

2Speaker 2
00:20:37.06 – 00:20:41.06

And I haven't seen, I don't know if you've seen Tommy, like any evidence whatsoever that

00:20:41.68 – 00:20:46.70

over the last couple of weeks, Netanyahu has changed strategy at all to do more to limit

00:20:46.70 – 00:20:48.78

civilian casualties or settler violence at all.

1Speaker 1
00:20:49.00 – 00:20:49.36

The opposite.

2Speaker 2
00:20:49.82 – 00:20:49.98

Yeah.

00:20:50.10 – 00:20:52.72

So that's just terrible.

00:20:53.06 – 00:20:53.58

All right.

00:20:53.60 – 00:20:58.30

So one thing Congress did get done is forcing the resignation of University of Pennsylvania

00:20:58.30 – 00:21:03.10

President Liz McGill, who along with the presidents of Harvard and MIT was called to testify last

00:21:03.10 – 00:21:04.74

week about antisemitism on campus.

00:21:04.90 – 00:21:10.10

When Elise Stefanik asked whether, quote, calling for the genocide of Jews would violate

00:21:10.10 – 00:21:11.68

their school's code of conduct.

00:21:12.20 – 00:21:17.72

McGill only went as far as to say, quote, if the speech turns into conduct, it can be

00:21:17.72 – 00:21:18.24

harassment.

00:21:18.88 – 00:21:20.68

The other two presidents gave similar answers.

00:21:20.86 – 00:21:21.64

The clip went viral.

00:21:21.78 – 00:21:23.94

It was widely condemned by politicians in both parties.

00:21:24.34 – 00:21:28.90

And even though they all tried to apologize, McGill ultimately resigned on Saturday.

00:21:29.54 – 00:21:30.78

So we haven't talked about this yet.

00:21:30.84 – 00:21:32.08

Just been brewing in the background.

00:21:32.08 – 00:21:33.76

What do you guys think about this whole controversy?

4Speaker 4
00:21:34.42 – 00:21:34.68

Oh, man.

00:21:34.78 – 00:21:34.96

Okay.

00:21:35.02 – 00:21:39.92

So I think, first of all, I feel like Stefanik set two traps and they stepped into both.

00:21:40.10 – 00:21:42.90

They kind of dove headfirst into both of them.

00:21:43.04 – 00:21:43.14

All right.

00:21:43.24 – 00:21:47.26

Trap number one is conservatives have created a caricature of what's going on on college

00:21:47.26 – 00:21:47.60

campuses.

00:21:47.76 – 00:21:52.18

And the character basically says, if you express any kind of conservative viewpoint, it's considered

00:21:52.18 – 00:21:52.62

bigotry.

00:21:52.70 – 00:21:53.70

It's considered hate speech.

00:21:53.70 – 00:21:55.04

You'll be yelled at.

00:21:55.10 – 00:21:57.40

You'll be barked off campus.

00:21:57.40 – 00:22:02.70

And then they pull out examples of protest or a conservative judge gets yelled at.

00:22:02.76 – 00:22:08.22

And then they say, see, if you express anything other than liberal orthodoxy, you're not safe

00:22:08.22 – 00:22:08.72

on campus.

00:22:08.72 – 00:22:11.16

But you can say any kind of anti-Semitic thing you want.

00:22:11.32 – 00:22:15.70

And that's okay, because this is about espousing what they call like sort of extremist views

00:22:15.70 – 00:22:17.08

on gender and race and all the rest.

00:22:17.14 – 00:22:18.66

So that's like trap number one, that character.

00:22:18.76 – 00:22:26.90

The second trap is equating any form of legitimate criticism of Israel or a belief or anti-Zionism

00:22:26.90 – 00:22:30.04

at all and trying to equate that completely with anti-Semitism.

00:22:30.30 – 00:22:30.34

Right.

00:22:30.38 – 00:22:31.84

That's what a lot of Republicans in the House have done.

00:22:31.92 – 00:22:32.92

They just passed this resolution.

00:22:33.48 – 00:22:36.88

And it says right there in the middle, anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism.

00:22:36.88 – 00:22:42.88

To basically paint anything, anyone who is not supportive of Israel as being anti-Semitic,

00:22:43.30 – 00:22:44.74

that is a part of this project.

00:22:44.86 – 00:22:50.34

And basically, this hearing was a way to get these college presidents to fall into both

00:22:50.34 – 00:22:50.92

of those traps.

00:22:51.44 – 00:22:54.34

And in the way, by the way, they'd sat there for hours answering questions.

00:22:54.34 – 00:22:57.10

And by the time they got to this moment, they kind of fell in that trap.

00:22:57.22 – 00:22:57.32

Why?

00:22:57.40 – 00:22:58.58

Because it's sort of like Ghostbusters.

00:22:59.02 – 00:23:01.22

When someone asks if you're a god, you say yes.

00:23:01.48 – 00:23:07.76

If someone tries to bait you into doing anything to defend a call for genocide, you have to

00:23:08.34 – 00:23:08.98

not take that bait.

1Speaker 1
00:23:09.86 – 00:23:09.98

Yeah.

00:23:10.08 – 00:23:14.84

I mean, they've just seemed so like rigid and lawyered up and tied to their talking

00:23:14.84 – 00:23:18.68

points that they somehow were incapable of answering the most obvious question in the

00:23:18.68 – 00:23:20.22

world, which is, is genocide that?

00:23:20.94 – 00:23:21.18

Right.

00:23:21.22 – 00:23:23.08

That shouldn't stump you if you're a college president.

00:23:23.08 – 00:23:23.74

But you're right.

00:23:23.88 – 00:23:27.40

Like Stefanik was playing a game in bad faith, which was trying to say, she was trying to

00:23:27.40 – 00:23:31.26

get these presidents to accept the premise that the word intifada is calling for a genocide.

00:23:31.58 – 00:23:32.40

That is just not true.
