5Speaker 5
00:02.54 – 00:07.90

O.J. Simpson was a football icon, movie star, and at the center of the so-called trial of

00:07.90 – 00:08.46

the century.

6Speaker 6
00:08.68 – 00:11.08

If it doesn't fit, you must acquit.

2Speaker 2
00:11.36 – 00:12.28

He died yesterday.

00:12.46 – 00:14.92

We'll remember the complicated life and legacy he leaves.

5Speaker 5
00:15.22 – 00:16.02

I'm Leila Faldan.

00:16.16 – 00:19.00

That's A. Martinez, and this is Up First from NPR News.

00:21.38 – 00:24.14

Russia tried to conquer Kiev with military might.

00:24.36 – 00:25.00

That didn't work.

00:25.10 – 00:28.06

But its war of attrition is exhausting Ukrainian troops.

00:28.06 – 00:34.02

Now Ukraine's government is preparing to draft hundreds of thousands more military-age men.

2Speaker 2
00:34.38 – 00:39.16

And the Justice Department charges baseball star Shohei Ohtani's former interpreter with

00:39.16 – 00:43.48

bank fraud, $16 million worth, all to pay off gambling debts.

6Speaker 6
00:43.82 – 00:47.82

Mr. Ohtani is considered a victim in this case.

2Speaker 2
00:47.98 – 00:50.58

How do prosecutors say all that money got stolen?

00:50.82 – 00:51.32

Stay with us.

00:51.38 – 00:53.16

We'll give you all the news you need to start your day.

01:00.90 – 01:06.24

It feels like the passing of O.J. Simpson closed a chapter in Los Angeles history, one

01:06.24 – 01:10.86

though that still leaves a sense that there is still a lot that will never be resolved.

5Speaker 5
01:11.24 – 01:14.08

His family announced yesterday that he died of cancer.

01:14.64 – 01:21.20

Last century, he was a famous and infamous figure as an athlete, an actor, and a murder suspect.

2Speaker 2
01:21.60 – 01:25.28

Here to look back at his cultural legacy is NPR's Manalit Delbarco, who reported on the

01:25.28 – 01:26.92

Simpson saga in the 1990s.

01:26.92 – 01:31.50

Manalit, before the freeway chase, before the so-called trial of the century, O.J. was

01:31.50 – 01:34.08

already famous in so many ways.

1Speaker 1
01:34.78 – 01:35.30

That's right.

01:35.42 – 01:40.94

You know, O.J. Simpson started off as a star football player at USC, earning a Heisman

01:40.94 – 01:41.34

trophy.

01:41.76 – 01:45.42

Then he went on to be a running back in the NFL and a sports commentator.

01:45.94 – 01:49.34

He was handsome and with a famously great smile.

01:49.50 – 01:54.30

And after his football career in Hollywood ate him up, he starred in commercials, sprinting

01:54.30 – 01:55.08

through airports.

01:55.08 – 01:57.14

He was in the TV series, Roots.

01:57.34 – 02:02.84

And he had parts in movies like The Towering Inferno and The Naked Gun Comedies.

02:02.84 – 02:03.30

Police!

2Speaker 2
02:03.98 – 02:04.94

Throw down your guns!

1Speaker 1
02:05.50 – 02:06.80

Audiences loved him.

02:06.94 – 02:09.74

And that's why it was so shocking what came next.

2Speaker 2
02:09.88 – 02:12.32

Yeah, he seemed like someone that would be everyone's friend.

02:12.98 – 02:18.52

Now, that next is becoming the number one suspect in the murders of his ex-wife, Nicole

02:18.52 – 02:20.16

Brown Simpson, and her friend, Ronald Goldman.

02:20.22 – 02:20.90

That was 1994.

02:21.74 – 02:23.54

Manalit, you covered that story for NPR.

02:23.54 – 02:25.50

It was just a huge deal.

1Speaker 1
02:26.08 – 02:26.60

It was.

02:26.64 – 02:27.36

It was huge.

02:27.56 – 02:32.44

And listeners may remember, you probably remember, after Simpson became a wanted man, he went

02:32.44 – 02:37.70

missing and then he emerged as a passenger in a white Ford Bronco on the freeways of

02:37.70 – 02:40.02

Los Angeles, getting chased by police.

02:40.60 – 02:46.10

95 million people were transfixed by the slow car chase that was broadcast live on national

02:46.10 – 02:46.64

television.

02:47.10 – 02:50.70

Here's a clip from a CNN special with Eric Spillman from KTLA.

02:51.14 – 02:52.46

People have pulled over.

2Speaker 2
02:52.46 – 02:57.50

Many of them carrying signs reading things like, save the Jews, go OJ.

1Speaker 1
02:57.76 – 02:59.96

People are literally cheering him on.

03:00.20 – 03:03.42

Some people saw Simpson as a sort of folk hero on the run.

03:03.78 – 03:08.20

And as a reporter, I don't think I had a cell phone then, but I followed the helicopters

03:08.20 – 03:12.88

to his mansion where a crowd of people had gathered, some with kids on their shoulders,

03:12.88 – 03:14.44

to see what would happen next.

03:15.02 – 03:20.34

Simpson sat in his car in the driveway, pointing a gun to his head, and he eventually surrendered.

2Speaker 2
03:20.34 – 03:23.96

Yeah, OJ's friend Al Cowlings was driving the white Ford Bronco.

03:24.30 – 03:25.82

OJ was in the back the whole time.

03:26.30 – 03:32.12

And then there was his murder trial the following year, which was another huge media moment.

1Speaker 1
03:32.68 – 03:37.08

Yeah, it was called the trial of the century, and it felt like the whole country was glued

03:37.08 – 03:39.74

to the TV to watch it unfold live.

03:40.12 – 03:45.84

Everyone involved became a pop culture icon, the judge, the prosecutors, and Simpson's

03:45.84 – 03:50.70

lawyers, including Robert Kardashian, father to the now famous Kardashian family.

03:51.22 – 03:56.72

Also, his showy attorney, Johnny Cochran, he famously asked Simpson to try wearing once

03:56.72 – 03:58.78

bloody gloves found at the crime scene.

03:59.12 – 04:00.90

Here's Cochran in his closing argument.

6Speaker 6
04:01.40 – 04:02.30

It makes no sense.

04:02.86 – 04:03.66

It doesn't fit.

04:04.36 – 04:06.92

If it doesn't fit, you must acquit.

2Speaker 2
04:07.06 – 04:08.16

And they did acquit.

04:08.86 – 04:13.40

I'm going to lead to the reaction to that moment was very telling.

1Speaker 1
04:14.28 – 04:18.66

It was huge all over the country, and it was somewhat divided along racial lines.

04:19.06 – 04:22.26

I interviewed some liberal white Angelenos who were outraged.

04:22.70 – 04:25.34

Here's a retired Hollywood accountant named Al.

04:25.72 – 04:28.44

NPR agreed at the time not to use his last name.

2Speaker 2
04:28.74 – 04:32.70

This trial was a big fraud as far as I'm concerned.

04:33.08 – 04:34.66

The guy is as guilty as sin.

1Speaker 1
04:35.00 – 04:38.64

You know, but reaction was more complicated for black Angelenos I spoke to.

04:38.64 – 04:43.52

Some told me that whether or not Simpson killed his ex-wife, they felt that for once justice

04:43.52 – 04:45.94

was on the side of an African-American man.

04:46.34 – 04:49.00

Here's a clip from Al Humphreys, a former sheriff's deputy.

2Speaker 2
04:49.46 – 04:53.78

We said, wow, at least a black guy got away sometimes because there's a lot of people,

04:53.90 – 04:56.26

a lot of dead black folks that nobody ever went to jail for.

04:56.70 – 05:00.86

Well, O.J. lived nearly 30 more years after all that.

05:01.06 – 05:03.26

How relevant was he the rest of his life?

1Speaker 1
05:03.88 – 05:08.08

Well, you know, after his civil trial, he sort of faded away from the public for a while.

05:08.08 – 05:13.46

He served nine years in a Las Vegas prison for an armed robbery and kidnapping at a hotel.

05:14.10 – 05:19.52

And the last time I saw O.J. Simpson in person, he was signing autographs at a horror film

05:19.52 – 05:21.78

convention at a suburban strip mall.

05:22.14 – 05:24.42

And I thought that might be the last we heard from him.

05:24.50 – 05:30.40

But in 2016, there was a highly acclaimed TV miniseries about his trial and a documentary

05:30.40 – 05:31.90

about him that won an Oscar.

05:32.50 – 05:36.34

O.J. Simpson remained a fascinating and a complicated figure.

2Speaker 2
05:36.34 – 05:39.02

Yeah, quite the sad saga all around.

05:39.24 – 05:41.42

That's NPR's Manalit Delbarco in Los Angeles.

05:41.52 – 05:42.02

Manalit, thanks.

1Speaker 1
05:42.50 – 05:43.08

Thank you.

2Speaker 2
05:52.58 – 05:57.56

Russia's war of attrition in Ukraine appears to be succeeding in ways its military superiority

05:57.56 – 05:58.28

has not.

5Speaker 5
05:58.64 – 06:03.92

More than two years into its full-scale invasion, Russian troops are now on the offensive and

06:03.92 – 06:06.00

Ukrainian soldiers are exhausted.

06:06.60 – 06:11.50

So after months of deliberation, Ukraine's parliament has adopted a law to mobilize hundreds

06:11.50 – 06:13.22

of thousands of new soldiers.

2Speaker 2
06:13.50 – 06:16.76

NPR's Ukraine correspondent, Joanna Kakissis, joins us now.

06:16.86 – 06:21.06

Joanna, it can't be good for a country trying to win a war that they would need more troops

06:21.06 – 06:21.80

as soon as possible.

3Speaker 3
06:22.52 – 06:23.34

Yes, that's right.

06:23.54 – 06:27.24

Tens of thousands of Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in this war.

06:27.38 – 06:29.60

Tens of thousands more have been injured.

06:29.60 – 06:35.50

Russia has more resources, four times the population, and it's trying to win by wearing

06:35.50 – 06:36.96

down the Ukrainian military.

06:37.38 – 06:41.54

Some Ukrainian troops have been on the front line for months, up to two years.

06:41.70 – 06:47.18

And to make matters worse, the Ukrainians don't have enough artillery shells to fight

06:47.18 – 06:49.84

back or air defense missiles to protect themselves.

06:50.14 – 06:54.42

The Russians are also dropping these guided bombs from fighter jets that are just destroying

06:54.42 – 06:55.42

Ukrainian defenses.

2Speaker 2
06:55.76 – 06:59.40

And Ukrainian leaders think that this new conscription law will help turn that around?

06:59.40 – 07:00.06

How would it do that?

3Speaker 3
07:00.88 – 07:04.80

So, A, the law lays the groundwork to draft more military-age men.

07:05.36 – 07:10.18

They would be required at all times to carry draft registration documents, so conscripts

07:10.18 – 07:11.14

would be easier to find.

07:11.56 – 07:14.76

If they don't, they could lose privileges, like they would be banned from driving.

07:14.98 – 07:20.12

And lawmakers are also considering imposing fines for draft dodgers in a separate bill.

2Speaker 2
07:20.30 – 07:21.28

All right, so those are the stakes.

07:21.42 – 07:22.34

Any carrots here?

3Speaker 3
07:23.10 – 07:23.54

Yeah.

07:23.68 – 07:27.06

The law also offers incentives to men who volunteer for service.

07:27.06 – 07:31.58

For example, they can get certificates to buy a car or put down mortgage payments on

07:31.58 – 07:32.02

a house.

07:32.50 – 07:37.70

And in one controversial move, the bill also would allow convicts to serve in return for

07:37.70 – 07:38.78

a suspended sentence.

07:39.34 – 07:41.74

Previously, convicts were banned from military service.

2Speaker 2
07:42.04 – 07:46.48

Now, you've mentioned how exhausted Ukrainian troops are from their very long deployments.

07:46.62 – 07:48.22

Does this law address that issue?

3Speaker 3
07:49.18 – 07:49.64

No.

07:49.84 – 07:54.74

Though lawmakers are considering a separate law about that, and, you know, long deployments

07:54.74 – 07:59.02

with no end, that is what people seem to be most upset about when we speak with them.

07:59.52 – 08:03.32

Families of soldiers are concerned that they're fighting for so long, and like I said, for

08:03.32 – 08:07.74

two years without a real break, that some of these soldiers are forced to fight with

08:07.74 – 08:08.20

injuries.

2Speaker 2
08:08.76 – 08:10.06

What are those families saying?

3Speaker 3
08:10.98 – 08:16.26

Our producer Polina Litvinova spoke to Katerina Ampilohova, she's a college student.

08:16.46 – 08:20.48

Katerina talked about her godfather, who's been stationed near the Russian border.

08:20.48 – 08:25.14

He was hospitalized after getting hurt in action and told he can't convalesce for more

08:25.14 – 08:25.90

than two months.

08:29.00 – 08:33.62

She's saying he's expected to return to where he was stationed at the border, even if he

08:33.62 – 08:35.90

doesn't entirely recover from his wounds.

08:36.22 – 08:40.04

It does not matter if he's healed, because they need him on the front line.

2Speaker 2
08:40.28 – 08:41.08

So those are the families.

08:41.20 – 08:43.60

What about the young men who could maybe be drafted?

3Speaker 3
08:44.14 – 08:49.38

Yeah, we also spoke with Denis Monasterny, who will turn 25 in four months.

08:53.32 – 08:57.90

And Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently signed another law that lowered the

08:57.90 – 09:00.00

conscription age from 27 to 25.

09:00.26 – 09:04.72

Denis told us that he's ready to serve, but that he too worries about whether he will

09:04.72 – 09:05.56

ever get a break.

09:05.70 – 09:10.00

He said there seems to be no end to this war, and it's incredibly hard to be on the front

09:10.00 – 09:13.12

line all the time, for months at a time, with no end.

2Speaker 2
09:13.24 – 09:15.34

Joanne, quickly, the draft age in Ukraine is 25.

09:15.56 – 09:17.22

Why are younger men in Ukraine exempted?

3Speaker 3
09:17.94 – 09:19.54

Ukraine doesn't have many of them.

09:19.54 – 09:24.92

Ukraine has a very low birth rate, a drastic decline in birth rates since the USSR's collapse.

09:25.28 – 09:29.54

And if Ukraine recruits a lot of young men, it risks decimating an entire generation.

2Speaker 2
09:29.76 – 09:30.92

That's NPR's Joanna Kakis.

09:31.02 – 09:31.32

Thanks.

3Speaker 3
09:31.84 – 09:32.36

You're welcome.

2Speaker 2
09:41.32 – 09:46.14

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani's former interpreter and close friend is due in court

09:46.14 – 09:47.94

today after being charged with bank fraud.

5Speaker 5
09:47.94 – 09:54.20

Federal prosecutors say Ipe Mizuhara stole more than $16 million from Ohtani's bank account,

09:54.64 – 09:57.08

all because he had run up massive gambling debt.

2Speaker 2
09:57.30 – 10:01.90

LAist reporter Yusra Farhazan was at the news conference in downtown Los Angeles, where

10:01.90 – 10:04.38

prosecutors announced the charges yesterday.

10:04.62 – 10:05.86

So tell us more about these charges.

10:06.00 – 10:07.74

I mean, bank fraud is pretty serious stuff.

4Speaker 4
10:08.78 – 10:09.26

Right.

10:10.06 – 10:15.54

Bank fraud is a felony offense that can carry a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.

10:15.54 – 10:21.44

Federal prosecutors say Mizuhara illegally transferred money from Ohtani's bank account

10:21.44 – 10:22.14

to bookies.

10:22.32 – 10:28.00

They say he began gambling back in 2021, placing bets in sports, but not on baseball.

2Speaker 2
10:28.52 – 10:30.80

But then he began losing all that money.

4Speaker 4
10:31.34 – 10:31.52

Yes.

10:31.54 – 10:35.98

And according to the complaint, they say to pay off his debt, Mizuhara siphoned off more

10:35.98 – 10:38.34

than $16 million from Ohtani's account.

10:38.82 – 10:45.44

They also believe he spent about $325,000 of Ohtani's money on baseball cards purchased

10:45.44 – 10:47.66

through websites like eBay and whatnot.

2Speaker 2
10:48.08 – 10:53.84

Now Ohtani and Mizuhara were friends, but how did Mizuhara get access to his account?

10:53.90 – 10:55.54

Because I'm not sharing my account with my friends.

4Speaker 4
10:56.12 – 11:00.64

So when Ohtani moved to America from Japan to play professional baseball, he could not

11:00.64 – 11:01.42

speak English.

11:01.88 – 11:07.36

And prosecutors say that Mizuhara acted as his translator, but also his de facto manager.

11:07.84 – 11:12.36

They say that Mizuhara helped Ohtani set up a bank account and that he later used that

11:12.36 – 11:17.02

information to change the phone number and email address associated with the account.

11:17.38 – 11:19.50

That's how they say he gained access to it.

11:19.84 – 11:22.72

Here's one of the prosecutors, U.S. Attorney Martin Estrada.

6Speaker 6
11:23.04 – 11:28.84

We obtained recordings of telephone calls in which Mizuhara spoke with bank employees,

11:29.96 – 11:36.30

lied to them about being Mr. Ohtani, gave personal biographical information for Mr.

11:36.30 – 11:43.92

Ohtani in order to impersonate him, and thereby convinced the bank to approve large wire transfers

11:44.74 – 11:47.34

of large amounts of money to the bookmakers.

4Speaker 4
11:47.86 – 11:54.42

Estrada also said that Mizuhara blocked Ohtani's professional advisors, including his agent,

11:54.62 – 11:58.64

accountant, and financial advisor, from gaining access to the account.

11:59.16 – 12:00.46

None of them speak Japanese.

12:01.16 – 12:04.70

We did reach out to Mizuhara's attorney for comment, and he declined.

12:04.70 – 12:05.20

All right.

2Speaker 2
12:05.24 – 12:10.30

So now for a big key part in this, what did Ohtani know or didn't know about all this?

4Speaker 4
12:11.00 – 12:16.84

Well, Ohtani has said publicly he was shocked by Mizuhara's actions and had nothing to do

12:16.84 – 12:17.36

with them.

12:17.68 – 12:21.62

And U.S. Attorney Estrada said yesterday that Ohtani is a victim in this case.

6Speaker 6
12:22.10 – 12:27.86

I want to be clear that Mr. Ohtani has cooperated fully and completely in this investigation.
