Each week, we will break down an episode of The Office and give exclusive behind the scenes stories that only two people who were there can tell you.

2Speaker 2

We're the office ladies.

00:01:28.84 – 00:01:32.36

Hello, hey there, we have an exciting episode today.

1Speaker 1
00:01:32.98 – 00:01:35.44

Better climb on the bus and get started.

2Speaker 2
00:01:35.74 – 00:01:46.00

It's Work Bus season nine, episode four, written by Brent Forrester and directed by Brian Cranston. Yeah, the Brian Cranston.

1Speaker 1
00:01:46.36 – 00:01:48.20

I mean, we were all so excited.

2Speaker 2
00:01:48.62 – 00:01:50.02

We have a lot to share about that.

1Speaker 1
00:01:50.22 – 00:01:50.68

We sure do.

2Speaker 2
00:01:50.92 – 00:01:52.52

It's gonna spill into next week.

1Speaker 1
00:01:52.78 – 00:01:58.62

Oh yeah, two work bus pleasures, what? I don't know, whatever.

00:01:58.92 – 00:02:01.44

It's two weeks of work. Bus, goodness.

2Speaker 2
00:02:01.90 – 00:02:02.84

Because there's a lot to say.

1Speaker 1
00:02:03.02 – 00:02:03.20

Yes.

2Speaker 2
00:02:03.64 – 00:02:07.14

Let's start with a summary. It's a good place to start.

1Speaker 1
00:02:07.40 – 00:02:08.78

Here it is, it always is.

2Speaker 2
00:02:09.16 – 00:02:18.42

Jim tricks Dwight into believing the building is unsafe in order to give Pam a break. You know, Jim's feeling guilty, Pam's being so cool, so.

1Speaker 1
00:02:18.42 – 00:02:22.82

Oh, I have a whole thing, I have a whole theory, you have a whole thing. uh-huh, I'll save it.

00:02:23.06 – 00:02:24.28

Go on with your fast fact.

2Speaker 2
00:02:24.28 – 00:02:27.24

I was not going to rant about it this week, I was gonna give everyone a break.

1Speaker 1
00:02:27.46 – 00:02:29.76

Well, I did a little digging into.

00:02:29.76 – 00:02:31.80

Anyway, I'm saving it go, all right.

2Speaker 2
00:02:32.48 – 00:03:01.64

Well, Jim's plan is thwarted when Dwight rents a bus for everyone to work from. Then Jim gets the bus moving with a promise of pie. In an attempt to give Pam the best day ever. Nellie is gonna seek a recommendation from Andy for an adoption application. If you had any feelings of goodwill toward Andy. They will be completely squashed. Today. I believe this episode.

1Speaker 1
00:03:02.22 – 00:03:02.72

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:03:02.84 – 00:03:07.68

Makes him fairly unredeemable. And, finally, Dwight has a heart to heart with Jim.

1Speaker 1
00:03:08.24 – 00:03:21.56

This is very off topic. But when you said thwarted, it sounded so funny. why, I don't know. I just I wasn't expecting you to say thwarted. It's not a word I throw out very often.

00:03:21.56 – 00:03:23.66

And when you said it, I don't know, it got me tickled.

2Speaker 2
00:03:23.84 – 00:03:24.94

It's one of my favorite words.

1Speaker 1
00:03:25.04 – 00:03:25.58

Say it.

2Speaker 2
00:03:25.86 – 00:03:29.50

Thwarted? I don't know, I think I use it a lot. What do?

00:03:29.50 – 00:03:30.96

A lot of my plans get thwarted.

1Speaker 1
00:03:31.42 – 00:03:37.56

We have been best friends for a long time. I would never say, you know what? one of Jenna's favorite words is thwarted.

2Speaker 2
00:03:37.74 – 00:03:44.16

I feel like I use it all the time in parenting because parenting is just like best laid plans. But then everything gets thwarted and you have to.

1Speaker 1
00:03:44.16 – 00:03:50.40

Maybe you say, thwarted a lot to Lee? I'm gonna ask him, you know what you say a lot to me? What in particular?

2Speaker 2
00:03:50.80 – 00:03:52.06

I say in particular.

1Speaker 1
00:03:52.60 – 00:03:56.54

In particular, really, yeah, not thwarted.

2Speaker 2
00:03:57.74 – 00:03:58.94

Something to think about.

1Speaker 1
00:03:59.04 – 00:04:01.18

Something to think about fast fact number one.

2Speaker 2
00:04:01.52 – 00:04:09.34

Fast fact number one It was during this episode that the cast learned that season nine would be our last season.

1Speaker 1
00:04:09.98 – 00:04:21.04

Yes, we shared about this in our book, The Office BFFS. But I'll never forget it. It's such a clear memory for me. We were sitting in the bus, it was in the parking lot.

00:04:21.20 – 00:04:44.58

We had all piled in there and Greg came on the bus and I wasn't expecting to see him that day. And he asked if it could just be the cast on the bus. And there was a few crew members that were kind of getting the bus ready for us to hit the open road and they all left. And when he asked the crew if they could step aside so he could just talk to the cast, I did.

00:04:44.64 – 00:04:52.44

I felt like myself, leave my body. I was like, uh-oh, I feel like this is when your parents are like, shut the door, we're gonna have a big talk like, what?

2Speaker 2
00:04:52.86 – 00:05:08.44

Yeah, Greg would do this sometimes, and usually he was gonna tell us something. Like we'd been nominated for an award, or we were adding a new big cast member or some news. It was news, it was always news, but we weren't up for any awards at this point.

00:05:08.70 – 00:05:12.94

And we were like, the show has been cast for this year, so.

1Speaker 1
00:05:13.22 – 00:05:28.28

What's this news? Yeah, and then he just explained to us that NBC was wanting to do maybe two more years of the show. But at that time, people's contracts were gonna be expiring before then and we might lose some of our cast.

00:05:28.40 – 00:05:45.52

And then what was the show if it wasn't all of us right? He was like, Do we wanna call our own out and go out our way, or do we want to slowly peter out losing cast members, right? And we all collectively were like, we wanna call her out, we wanna go out together.

2Speaker 2
00:05:46.14 – 00:06:09.44

I remember John Krasinski saying that this was such a great privilege to be able to call our own out. Yeah, because most of the time, if you're on a TV show, maybe you've taken your summer hiatus and you're all ready. You think you're coming back for another year. And you get a phone call that says, I'm sorry the network's decided not to continue with your show. I mean, that's what happened with my ABC show splitting up together.

00:06:09.90 – 00:06:16.24

We had this giant cliffhanger at the end of season two and all these plans for season three and just was over.

1Speaker 1
00:06:17.06 – 00:06:33.88

And you get no goodbyes, you get no farewell moments. So the fact that starting from work bus, we knew, okay, this is our last season and the writers could build towards that. And as a cast, we all gosh, it was really bonding.

2Speaker 2
00:06:34.90 – 00:07:04.92

Yeah, and Greg set a meeting with every single cast member and the writers and asked that cast member, What do you want to see for your character in this final season? And I remember, Creed said, I'd like to sing one of my songs on the show and I would like Devin to come back. He had stayed in touch with Devin ever since the beginning. Remember, back in the Halloween episode, Michael has to decide if he's gonna fire Devin or Creed.

1Speaker 1
00:07:05.30 – 00:07:05.54

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:07:05.68 – 00:07:24.78

And that's when Devin and Creed, who had been background performers, Creed ended up becoming a cast member, and Devin moved on. He was gonna do a play in New York. But Creed said, I want Devin to come back and I want to be able to play a song on the show. And we made both those things happen, but every cast member got to give their pitches for their characters. Goodbye.

1Speaker 1
00:07:25.02 – 00:07:25.30

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:07:25.60 – 00:07:30.32

Which is another truly classy move. And very, very Greg Daniels.

1Speaker 1
00:07:30.58 – 00:07:34.68

I feel like the show started as a creative collaboration and it ends as one.

2Speaker 2
00:07:35.98 – 00:07:47.64

100. So just to paint a picture for you. At the beginning of this shoot for work bus, we found out that the show was coming to an end.

1Speaker 1
00:07:48.10 – 00:07:49.56

We had a lot of feelings.

2Speaker 2
00:07:49.82 – 00:07:58.98

We did. That brings me to fast fact number two, which is about how this episode also meant the end of our lives.

1Speaker 1
00:07:59.50 – 00:08:10.32

Well, it sounds dramatic. But it is true that the whole entire cast, as you guys all know, because we've brought this up before, refers to this episode to this day as Jenna.

2Speaker 2
00:08:10.82 – 00:08:11.46

Death bus.

1Speaker 1
00:08:11.62 – 00:08:12.14

That's right.

2Speaker 2
00:08:12.52 – 00:08:33.70

We got a fan mail flurry about this. Kendall W. from Phoenix, Arizona, and many others said. Death bus. We want to hear all about it. Well, we wrote an entire chapter about this one episode in our book, The Office BFFS, because number one. We had a lot of pictures from this episode. Thanks to you, Angela.

00:08:33.70 – 00:08:35.56

You brought your camera on this shoot.

1Speaker 1
00:08:35.56 – 00:08:37.60

I did, I was clicking away.

2Speaker 2
00:08:38.06 – 00:08:50.66

So if you get our book, you're gonna see some great pictures. But also because three very significant things happened. First of all, Ellie Kemper peed her pants.

1Speaker 1
00:08:51.06 – 00:08:51.56

She did.

2Speaker 2
00:08:51.84 – 00:08:52.98

While we were shooting.

1Speaker 1
00:08:52.98 – 00:09:02.14

She did now. Ellie wrote about this in her book, The Squirrel Days, so we feel very comfortable sharing about it, and I reached out to Ellie.

2Speaker 2
00:09:02.14 – 00:09:14.80

And she sent in an audio clip with the whole story, which we will be sharing later. But besides Ellie peeing her pants, the entire cast of the office almost died twice while shooting this episode.

1Speaker 1
00:09:15.28 – 00:09:15.40

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:09:15.82 – 00:09:22.64

Two giant calamities. Bridget S. from St. Louis, Missouri. How's it going there?

00:09:23.20 – 00:09:24.08

How's it going, St. Lou?

1Speaker 1
00:09:24.38 – 00:09:26.78

Is that what locals say they call it St Lou?

2Speaker 2
00:09:27.20 – 00:09:30.86

They don't. I just made it up here on the spot. Thank you for telling me.

1Speaker 1
00:09:30.86 – 00:09:35.74

Because I could see myself going to St. Louis being like, What's up, St. Lou, you know, what do it?

00:09:35.82 – 00:09:36.30

Oh, no.

2Speaker 2
00:09:36.42 – 00:09:36.64

Okay.

1Speaker 1
00:09:37.42 – 00:09:38.70

What does Bridget say?

2Speaker 2
00:09:38.86 – 00:09:50.02

Bridget said Is it true that Jenna's sense of smell saved the whole cast of the office while aboard the work bus? Yes, Bridget, it's true. my nose did save the cast of the office. I'm very proud of this.

1Speaker 1
00:09:50.06 – 00:09:50.34

Yep.

2Speaker 2
00:09:50.92 – 00:10:12.70

But we will dive deep into all of these stories as we break down this episode. But we also got a lot of questions about the bus, Turner, L, from Stillwater, Minnesota, said. How many days did you use the bus? Was there only one bus or more than one bus? ANGELA I feel like Turner listened to our breakdown of speed.

1Speaker 1
00:10:13.16 – 00:10:16.74

Oh, where we had the great debate of the 13 buses, yeah, yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:10:17.08 – 00:10:19.72

Because Turner knew maybe there was more than one bus.

1Speaker 1
00:10:20.12 – 00:10:20.90

It's a good question.

2Speaker 2
00:10:21.38 – 00:10:41.04

Well, see, Bridget said. We only used one bus, we rented it for two weeks. We had to remove all of the original seats in the bus and put in the desks and the dividers. The description of how the bus should be laid out was pretty specific. In the script, it noted that Andy should be in the back, that Erin should be at the front, with a little reception area.

00:10:41.38 – 00:10:54.20

It even noted that she should tape a candy dish to the front of the bus. So all those little details were scripted and it even described who would be sitting next to who, because this would be important for the different moments of dialogue.

1Speaker 1
00:10:54.78 – 00:10:59.44

I found the sketch and drawing of the bus and where we were all seated in it.

2Speaker 2
00:10:59.74 – 00:11:00.48

Oh my gosh.

1Speaker 1
00:11:00.82 – 00:11:06.98

Yep, I don't know how it was in my digital clutter, lady. I think they sent it to us with the script, you know?

2Speaker 2
00:11:07.16 – 00:11:08.16

I think you're right.

1Speaker 1
00:11:08.38 – 00:11:11.10

And I'll put it in stories. Look, that was with our script.

2Speaker 2
00:11:12.84 – 00:11:13.64

Oh, yes.

1Speaker 1
00:11:14.22 – 00:11:20.68

Now they moved us around. I feel like that was a rough outline because I was not seated next to you and in that picture I am.

2Speaker 2
00:11:20.84 – 00:11:29.16

Yeah, this was an early draft because Daryl is on the bus here and Daryl doesn't end up being on the bus.

1Speaker 1
00:11:29.34 – 00:11:29.74

That's right.

2Speaker 2
00:11:30.12 – 00:11:53.30

Yeah, what's interesting I'm noticing in the sketch was when we read this. I immediately said, If this bus is gonna be moving, I'm gonna need to be facing forward. Yes, I remember that, and I remember there was like, a little note in the script that even said Jenna will be facing forward. If I would have ridden backwards, there would have been a fourth calamity, which would have been me vomiting on everybody.

00:11:53.72 – 00:11:55.46

There's some really bad car sickness.

1Speaker 1
00:11:55.46 – 00:12:15.70

Really bad car sickness. There's one thing I wanted to point out in this sketch that I'm gonna highlight in Stories on the Bus sketch. There's in all caps, it says. Note exclamation point the AC unit above. To be removed, they had to remove the AC unit to fit us all in there. That's gonna lead to some other issues later on.

2Speaker 2
00:12:15.80 – 00:12:25.14

It sure is, let's see, so. Steve also said. We shot on the bus for two and a half days, which we knew the half day was when we were parked in the parking lot, we weren't moving.

00:12:25.54 – 00:12:44.30

Yeah, then we had two days on the road or we were parked at the roadside attraction. I will have, you know that all of the peeing and near death happened on the final day of shooting, and Steve said, After we finished shooting. They had to reassemble the bus to look like a bus and then return it. Those are all your bus facts.

1Speaker 1
00:12:44.56 – 00:12:45.64

Okay, I liked them.

2Speaker 2
00:12:45.78 – 00:12:49.52

Thank you. This is the second time we have had bus facts on this podcast.

1Speaker 1
00:12:50.38 – 00:12:51.82

It might not be the last.

2Speaker 2
00:12:52.32 – 00:12:55.52

I look forward to what that might be because I can't think of it, but.

1Speaker 1
00:12:55.78 – 00:12:56.32

I don't know.

2Speaker 2
00:12:56.40 – 00:12:57.04

Never say never.

1Speaker 1
00:12:57.04 – 00:12:58.74

Never say never on office, ladies.

2Speaker 2
00:12:59.38 – 00:13:18.30

All right, fast. Fact number three Bryan Cranston as director, we got a fan question from Cassidy in Portland, Maine, who said I need all caps to know all about Bryan Cranston. Directing. This was peak breaking Bad days, so how did he come to direct this episode?

00:13:18.82 – 00:13:26.26

What was it like working with him on set, especially since the set was a literal bus? Were you as starstruck as I would have been in this scenario?

1Speaker 1
00:13:27.82 – 00:13:28.38

Yes.

2Speaker 2
00:13:28.86 – 00:13:29.42

Yes.

1Speaker 1
00:13:29.62 – 00:13:48.32

All of it, yes, it was so amazing having him. He just like, man, talk about someone when he walks into a room, just commands the room. Yes, but in a very friendly way. Yes, it's like this gentle, amazing presence walks in and his voice and just.

2Speaker 2
00:13:48.60 – 00:13:49.26

Immediately likable.

1Speaker 1
00:13:49.26 – 00:13:54.12

Likable and just funny, and doesn't take himself too seriously.

2Speaker 2
00:13:54.54 – 00:13:55.64

You know, like, just someone.

1Speaker 1
00:13:55.64 – 00:13:57.06

That you feel like instantly, you know.

2Speaker 2
00:13:57.58 – 00:14:17.10

And he's such a detail-oriented actor, yes, and so he has a passion and respect for acting, so he brings that with him as a director as well. He was very interested in us and our characters and our process, but then he had this incredibly technical job to do as director.

00:14:17.78 – 00:14:32.02

And you know, he had directed before, he had directed episodes of Malcolm in the Middle and Breaking Bad. And, like Cassie said, this was peak Breaking Bad. This was between season four and season five of Breaking Bad. So yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:14:32.60 – 00:14:48.66

And Cassie, guess what? The best person to tell you about? What it was like to have Bryan on set is Bryan Cranston. And he is gonna be with us next week. We have a whole interview with him about this episode, we're really gonna dive in, but he was just awesome.

2Speaker 2
00:14:49.08 – 00:14:59.72

Just awesome, and that should tell you what a great guy he is. When we reached out, he was like, Yes, and I wanna come into the studio and see you face-to-face and tell all these stories.

1Speaker 1
00:15:00.54 – 00:15:06.46

And he came in the studio, told us all the stories and then just hung out and we just like, hung out and chatted for a bit about life.

2Speaker 2
00:15:07.50 – 00:15:09.92

This rewatch podcast has reunited us.

1Speaker 1
00:15:09.92 – 00:15:15.02

With just the best, most awesome people, it's so great, we're so fortunate.

2Speaker 2
00:15:15.02 – 00:15:17.42

We are really getting to relive all our glory.

1Speaker 1
00:15:17.82 – 00:15:17.96

Yep.

2Speaker 2
00:15:18.76 – 00:15:42.66

Well, Steve Burgess wanted me to add that Bryan Cranston was very detail-oriented during his prep week. He was a big part of setting up the bus. He was very concerned with how tight a fit it was. For the cast and the camera operators, the only people that could be on the bus were the cast, camera and Bryan. Everybody else had to ride behind us in a follow van.

1Speaker 1
00:15:42.80 – 00:15:43.06

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:15:43.06 – 00:15:51.28

And that was, you know, a whole other consideration was that we had this caravan of crew following us as we drove.

1Speaker 1
00:15:52.14 – 00:16:06.88

The bus truly wasn't very big. I always think of it as like one of those smaller airport shuttle buses when you park in the faraway parking lot. Yes, not the big airport shuttle bus. Because there's the big one. But then there's the little guy that pulls up, yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:16:07.02 – 00:16:07.98

That's a good description.

1Speaker 1
00:16:08.68 – 00:16:31.22

Well, we also reached out to our writer for this episode, Brent Forrester, he's always so fantastic about sending in behind the scenes details. And he shared with us about Bryan directing and how focused Bryan was on safety. Let's hear what Brent had to say about Bryan directing. The irony of Death Bus is that Bryan Cranston was so safety paranoid in the prep.

00:16:31.64 – 00:16:53.10

He was just coming off Breaking Bad where they had been shooting in the desert in an RV, and he was so aware of what could go wrong. He would say we're shooting on location, in the heat, in a tiny vehicle. Things can go very, very bad. And they did on death bus.

2Speaker 2
00:16:54.08 – 00:16:57.40

It is truly what we call this episode, I know.

1Speaker 1
00:16:57.56 – 00:17:19.02

Everybody cast and crew called it Death Bus. And listen, we've all talked about this a lot as a cast and crew. In our book with Bryan, that the irony that Bryan was working on a show that filmed outside in the heat in an RV. And then he gets this job, woo-hoo on the office, it's gonna be air-conditioned, I'm gonna be inside in a cozy set.

00:17:19.42 – 00:17:24.48

And it's the one episode where we are on the road, in a bus, in the heat.

2Speaker 2
00:17:25.00 – 00:17:30.44

Yeah, and he did it on his week off from breaking bad. I know that was supposed to be the week he got to be indoors.

1Speaker 1
00:17:30.72 – 00:17:31.46

Air-conditioned.

2Speaker 2
00:17:31.74 – 00:17:37.10

Oh, my goodness. Well, that's all I have for Fast Facts. Do we wanna take a break?

1Speaker 1
00:17:37.48 – 00:17:47.94

We do, but before we go, you should know the weather this week was gonna be in the 90s all week. You guys. I mean, this episode started August 12th and it was hot.

2Speaker 2
00:17:48.62 – 00:17:49.34

It was hot.

1Speaker 1
00:17:49.74 – 00:17:51.00

There's my weather report.

2Speaker 2
00:17:51.48 – 00:17:53.00

All right, we'll be right back.

1Speaker 1
00:18:03.66 – 00:18:16.16

This episode starts, we're in a conference room. Andy is showing a highlight reel of the Dunder Mifflin softball team, except it's more of a blooper reel, and actually, it's just Andy making fun of everyone.

2Speaker 2
00:18:16.50 – 00:18:16.90

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:18:16.98 – 00:18:17.72

They're not even bloopers.

2Speaker 2
00:18:18.18 – 00:18:33.00

Well, this storyline, not the part with the fail videos that Andy shows, but just the Softball League was loosely based on our very own Dunder Mifflin cast and crew Softball League. I was not in it, but we talked with Claire about it.

1Speaker 1
00:18:33.20 – 00:18:48.20

Yeah, I do wanna point out that the videos that Andy are showing of the softball team, they're not fails, no one is failing. Like, he just says the word fail, like Daryl shares that was a triple, and he's like, fail, and I'm like, No, it's not a fail, Andy.

00:18:48.34 – 00:18:49.30

These are not fails.

2Speaker 2
00:18:49.44 – 00:18:53.26

Yeah, he manipulated the video and put like, funny commentary.

1Speaker 1
00:18:53.56 – 00:18:54.26

Fart noises.

2Speaker 2
00:18:54.46 – 00:18:55.44

Yes, exactly.

1Speaker 1
00:18:56.08 – 00:18:57.32

But then Jim is like.

2Speaker 2
00:18:57.32 – 00:19:03.20

Hey, what about that video I sent you? That's an actual fail? And Andy's like, Oh, I don't have it.

1Speaker 1
00:19:03.60 – 00:19:05.80

Yeah, I don't have it, and Jim's like, No, it's right here.

2Speaker 2
00:19:06.34 – 00:19:14.74

And it is Andy trying to pick up the big Gatorade. What do you call that jug? It's bigger than a jug, cooler, it's a big cooler of gatorade.

1Speaker 1
00:19:14.82 – 00:19:17.42

You know, like when you win the big game and they dump it on the coach.

2Speaker 2
00:19:17.54 – 00:19:17.78

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:19:17.90 – 00:19:18.46

That thing.

2Speaker 2
00:19:18.56 – 00:19:22.40

He picks it up and then he ends up falling with it and dumping it on himself.

1Speaker 1
00:19:22.94 – 00:19:38.74

Well, Brent sent us in a clip about this, about how they filmed it and what a great sport Ed was. Here's what he had to say. We were quite pleased with that stunt in the Cold Open, where Ed Helms falls down with the Gatorade. How we did it was we dug a hole in the ground, put a mattress in it and then covered the mattress with sand.

00:19:38.94 – 00:19:58.38

And it shows you what a go for it actor Ed Helms is. We had no rehearsal and no stunt man, and we just said, Ed, we need you to kind of trip backwards and spill on your shirt. Ed went for it so hard in the first take that Gatorade blasts out of the barrel and blows his hat off. That's the first take.

00:19:58.46 – 00:19:59.96

And that's the one we used in the episode.

2Speaker 2
00:20:01.00 – 00:20:06.46

I am so glad he shared that because when I watched that, I thought, How did that not hurt?

1Speaker 1
00:20:07.02 – 00:20:10.54

So there was a mattress in the ground, covered with dirt.

2Speaker 2
00:20:11.12 – 00:20:13.12

I had no idea that's how they do that.

1Speaker 1
00:20:13.22 – 00:20:17.40

Yeah, I can't believe. After that take, they made him do another one.

2Speaker 2
00:20:17.88 – 00:20:20.34

I know, like, just call it a day.

1Speaker 1
00:20:20.48 – 00:20:22.12

We got it, for sure.

2Speaker 2
00:20:22.74 – 00:20:32.68

Well, listen, I've got two tidbits for this cold open. The first is a quick location breakdown. We shot these scenes at the Balboa Sports Complex. The end?

1Speaker 1
00:20:33.10 – 00:20:33.40

And.

2Speaker 2
00:20:33.54 – 00:20:34.44

That's all I have to say about that.

1Speaker 1
00:20:34.44 – 00:20:35.60

Next second tidbit.

2Speaker 2
00:20:36.26 – 00:20:59.44

Second tidbit is that I remember that these fail videos were very popular at the time, I mean, they're still very popular now. But I wanted to get more information on, like, the origins of fail videos, and in doing so, I ended up reading an article about the psychology of fail videos. And I thought that Dwight might like what I found.

1Speaker 1
00:20:59.82 – 00:21:03.16

Not only Dwight, but, you know, who else would probably be interested is Zach Woods.

2Speaker 2
00:21:03.68 – 00:21:04.52

Yes, you're right.

1Speaker 1
00:21:04.64 – 00:21:08.22

Because in our interview with him, we talked about videos like this, Yes.

2Speaker 2
00:21:08.66 – 00:21:17.90

Well, I guess the Germans have a word to describe the pleasure that we experience at the expense of other people's failures.

1Speaker 1
00:21:18.46 – 00:21:19.28

Building Kinder.

2Speaker 2
00:21:19.88 – 00:21:25.00

No, that's later. It is called Schadenfreude.

1Speaker 1
00:21:25.98 – 00:21:26.50

Schadenfreude.

2Speaker 2
00:21:27.04 – 00:21:30.04

It loosely translates as harm joy.

?Unknown Speaker
00:21:30.82 – 00:21:31.20

Wow.

2Speaker 2
00:21:32.00 – 00:21:38.84

Psychologists believe that this is at the root of why we enjoy watching fail videos, and they've actually done a bunch of studies.

?Unknown Speaker
00:21:39.76 – 00:21:40.92

Yes, this is fascinating.

1Speaker 1
00:21:41.12 – 00:21:42.04

You know, like. -.

2Speaker 2
00:21:42.14 – 00:21:43.62

People study everything.

1Speaker 1
00:21:43.76 – 00:21:58.12

Based on what I found out, yeah, well, that's what we found out doing this rewatch. But also, you know, when you think of like little kids, like a toddler, if you want to make a toddler completely lose it. Laughing, pretend to trip and fall, yes.

00:21:58.20 – 00:21:59.14

They think it's hilarious.

2Speaker 2
00:21:59.60 – 00:22:12.66

Yeah, it's in us from the beginning. Yeah, well, let me tell you. A scientist named Leah Boker, who was a researcher at University of Cologne's Social Cognition Center, did an experiment-.

1Speaker 1
00:22:13.22 – 00:22:14.14

That's a tongue twister.

2Speaker 2
00:22:14.28 – 00:22:42.28

It is a tongue twister. Leah took German soccer fans and had them watch videos of their biggest rival. Who is the Dutch? The Dutch soccer team missing penalty kicks, and she tracked their response, then she showed them videos of the German team succeeding at penalty kicks. And what Leah found was that viewers were happier watching the Dutch team fail than they were watching their own team succeed.

1Speaker 1
00:22:43.22 – 00:22:44.50

Whoa, mm-hmm.

2Speaker 2
00:22:45.10 – 00:22:51.10

Yeah, watching your rival fail makes you feel better than your own. Success was the takeaway.

1Speaker 1
00:22:52.02 – 00:22:58.42

Well, geez, Louise, that's kind of dark, huh? Well, I'm gonna have to think on that.

2Speaker 2
00:22:58.76 – 00:22:59.20

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:22:59.56 – 00:23:02.20

I have questions, How do you measure that?

2Speaker 2
00:23:02.80 – 00:23:03.64

Yeah, I didn't-.

1Speaker 1
00:23:03.64 – 00:23:07.82

What boxes do you check off? Are they hooked up to a machine? How does this happen?

2Speaker 2
00:23:08.00 – 00:23:20.12

It didn't explain in the article because I was curious about that, too. Were we, you know, doing like receptors on the brain or whatever? I don't know, okay, but this was the experiment and the findings.

1Speaker 1
00:23:20.60 – 00:23:21.44

It's very interesting.

2Speaker 2
00:23:21.58 – 00:23:24.62

Yeah, so think about your own Schadenfreude.

1Speaker 1
00:23:25.32 – 00:23:25.84

Schadenfreude.

2Speaker 2
00:23:26.24 – 00:23:29.60

You know, I think the Jim Dwight relationship has a lot of Schadenfreude.

1Speaker 1
00:23:30.22 – 00:23:36.60

I would agree 100, and a lot of siblings have Schadenfreude, yes.

2Speaker 2
00:23:36.74 – 00:23:38.24

Yeah, it's true.

1Speaker 1
00:23:38.92 – 00:23:45.94

Speaking of Schadenfreude, mm-hmm, there is gonna be a pretty epic Jim Prank on Dwight coming up.

2Speaker 2
00:23:46.08 – 00:23:46.66

It's true.

1Speaker 1
00:23:46.80 – 00:23:58.76

Dwight and Toby are testing for EMF hotspots, Erin is marking them with big like red Xs and tape, and Phyllis walks into work. She's like, what's happening? She's very concerned.

00:23:59.32 – 00:24:01.50

I was curious about EMFS.

2Speaker 2
00:24:02.26 – 00:24:02.62

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:24:02.90 – 00:24:05.76

They are real electromagnetic fields.

2Speaker 2
00:24:06.18 – 00:24:14.00

They are for the most part believed to be non-harmful, but I guess in large doses can cause problems.

1Speaker 1
00:24:14.28 – 00:24:37.00

Well, you have high frequency EMFs, like radiation, maybe some big medical devices that use x-ray imaging machines, but then you have low to mid frequency EMFs. And that's probably what's in the Dunder Mifflin office. It's like microwave ovens, household appliances, cell phones, and they are thought to be harmless to people. But Toby's very concerned.

2Speaker 2
00:24:37.64 – 00:24:45.32

Well, Toby is a worrier, you know, he's got his concerns about the radon gas, and now he has concerns about the EMF.

1Speaker 1
00:24:45.54 – 00:24:45.84

Mm-hmm.

2Speaker 2
00:24:46.26 – 00:24:57.76

Dwight says, Listen, everything's up to code. And he has a talking head where he says, You know what? Maybe the wires need insulation, but it's a wire, people, I'm not buying it a fur coat. He doesn't wanna make any changes to the building.

1Speaker 1
00:24:57.96 – 00:25:02.66

Well, Stanley said, Hey, I am not paid to work in a microwave oven, he wants out of there.

2Speaker 2
00:25:03.08 – 00:25:04.54

He walks out, I know.

1Speaker 1
00:25:05.12 – 00:25:17.80

Jim and Pam arrived to work, and Jim is just man. Is he being extra sweet? He's running ahead of her, he's opening the door so she can walk through it, then he runs ahead to the elevator and he hits the button for her.

00:25:18.22 – 00:25:28.12

And he has a talking head, he says. You know what? I finally told Pam about this new side job in Philly. She was so cool about it and now I really wanna do something great for her.

00:25:28.46 – 00:25:29.74

Like, defend her.

2Speaker 2
00:25:29.88 – 00:25:39.94

In a bar fight, in a bar fight, I don't know. He wants to do something. He's very motivated by his own guilt of keeping this secret from her for so long, and her graciousness in hearing him out.

1Speaker 1
00:25:40.56 – 00:25:45.50

Well, I'm about to stir up a hornet's nest here, but Jim is doing guilt gifting.

2Speaker 2
00:25:46.18 – 00:25:47.72

Oh yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:25:48.06 – 00:26:07.94

He knows it was wrong to keep this secret from her. And now this whole episode is Jim trying to find a way to kind of woo Pam because she forgave him, right? Yeah, it's called guilt gifting. I went down a little bit of an internet rabbit hole about it.

00:26:08.38 – 00:26:15.44

It's usually associated with partners who cheat and then buy their wife or husband gifts afterwards. It's a pattern of behavior.

2Speaker 2
00:26:16.00 – 00:26:17.88

Yeah, I think this tracks.

1Speaker 1
00:26:18.08 – 00:26:27.22

Yeah, and Jim, you know, there wasn't a lot of time left for him. The camera crew knew Daryl knew he was running out of time to be the one to tell Pam.

2Speaker 2
00:26:27.56 – 00:26:34.98

Yeah, and now he's gonna guilt gift her a week off of work, which doesn't work, and then he's gonna try to guilt gift her some pie.

1Speaker 1
00:26:35.20 – 00:26:50.80

Some pie? Oh, also, this website that talked about guilt gifting said that ultimately, the partner that's getting the guilt gift knows what's happening. And then they can have resentment and feel like their partner is then further trying to manipulate them, okay?

2Speaker 2
00:26:50.86 – 00:26:57.24

I'm glad you brought this up because I have watched the next episode, which is Here comes trouble.

1Speaker 1
00:26:57.56 – 00:26:58.40

Yes, I have, too.

2Speaker 2
00:26:58.60 – 00:27:14.20

And there's a little bit of a whiplash because in this episode of Work Bus, Pam is being very easygoing about this information. But all of a sudden, in the next episode, she brings out a little bit of, like, sarcastic snark.

1Speaker 1
00:27:14.38 – 00:27:14.56

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:27:14.70 – 00:27:25.40

And I was like, wait a second. Last week she seemed cool with it, but now all of a sudden. So I wonder if maybe it's some of this built up resentment from the guilt gifting. Yeah, maybe it does track.

1Speaker 1
00:27:25.48 – 00:27:27.62

You can start to feel manipulated, they said.

2Speaker 2
00:27:27.78 – 00:27:32.66

Yeah, well, I think what Jim did was manipulative, so there you go.

1Speaker 1
00:27:32.92 – 00:27:34.48

Well, I found it very interesting.

2Speaker 2
00:27:34.76 – 00:27:36.78

I find that very interesting.

1Speaker 1
00:27:37.02 – 00:27:37.54

Yeah, it was.

2Speaker 2
00:27:38.18 – 00:27:48.92

Well, next up, Nellie's gonna go into Andy's office and he's a total meanie. I was trying to pick my word there and he's gonna give her one minute to talk. He has a little.

1Speaker 1
00:27:49.42 – 00:27:50.30

Hourglass thing.

2Speaker 2
00:27:50.38 – 00:28:09.90

Yeah, like you'd find in a boggle game or something. There were some earlier drafts of the script where it was made clear that this hourglass is only used for Nellie. But people thought that was a little bit too mean, and so they decided to let us believe that. Andy has a new one minute policy in speaking with him.

1Speaker 1
00:28:10.36 – 00:28:13.54

I was curious why she had the line, not the hourglass, again.

2Speaker 2
00:28:13.70 – 00:28:27.42

Yes, because apparently it's just for Nellie. She tells Andy that she wants to adopt a baby and the agency needs a character reference from her employer. And she'll write it all, she'll do everything, all he has to do is sign it.

1Speaker 1
00:28:28.04 – 00:28:39.12

Andy has a talking head where he's like, Sure, you know what? I'll read the letter. If she's honest about how evil and unfit of a mother she is, yeah, I'll sign that. So we know this isn't gonna go well for Nellie, No.

2Speaker 2
00:28:39.92 – 00:28:56.32

So Jim is gonna stir up some trouble here, he's trying to rile up the group and get everybody to get on. Dwight's case about these rays, Dwight says that he would have to shut down this office for an entire week in order to fix the problem. And Jim's like, Ooh.

1Speaker 1
00:28:56.72 – 00:28:58.50

Pam's like, That'd be nice, yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:28:58.90 – 00:29:00.62

So Jim wants to make this happen.

1Speaker 1
00:29:00.74 – 00:29:01.80

He sees his gift.

2Speaker 2
00:29:02.04 – 00:29:07.00

That's right, so he's gonna make some popcorn in the kitchen, but he's only gonna let one colonel pop.

1Speaker 1
00:29:07.18 – 00:29:07.42

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:29:07.68 – 00:29:13.32

And then he takes that popcorn bag, he puts it under Dwight's desk, right underneath an X.

1Speaker 1
00:29:14.00 – 00:29:32.82

One colonel popped right under Dwight's desk, right under a big red X in the ceiling of the EMF. Rays. Right, yeah, Dwight finds the bag and is like, Oh, no. He thinks there's enough electromagnetic fields by his desk to make it only pop once, so this must mean he's sterile.

00:29:33.24 – 00:29:33.38

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:29:33.52 – 00:29:46.40

He's gonna run into Andy's office, and Jim is like, Yes, I did it, week off for you, babe. He's like, let's go on a drive out to the lake with the kids. And Pam says, Ooh, can we stop and get pie? and Jim says, Yeah, Laverne's pies. Tires fixed also.

?Unknown Speaker
00:29:46.80 – 00:29:47.44

Of course.

2Speaker 2
00:29:48.28 – 00:29:50.06

I have a little tidbit for you about that.

1Speaker 1
00:29:50.22 – 00:29:50.52

Okay.

2Speaker 2
00:29:50.52 – 00:30:00.92

The legal team at NBC had to clear the name Laverne's pies tires fixed. Also. Before we could say it, they had to make sure that there was not a real place.

1Speaker 1
00:30:01.24 – 00:30:02.46

Laverne's pies tires fixed also.

2Speaker 2
00:30:02.58 – 00:30:20.14

Yes, and just in case. They also cleared three other options Laverne's Apple Pies, Laverne's Apple Pies and others, and Laverne's Pies. No Cakes, don't ask. All four cleared. We had our choice and we went with Laverne's Pies. Tires fixed also.

1Speaker 1
00:30:20.40 – 00:30:21.52

That one's my favorite.

2Speaker 2
00:30:22.00 – 00:30:22.88

Totally my favorite.

1Speaker 1
00:30:23.66 – 00:30:42.12

We should mention that in the kitchen, while Jim was making that one kernel pop. Daryl is asking Clark to teach him Powerpoint, and Clark's like, Dude, just watch the tutorial, and Daryl's like, You are my tutorial. This is gonna set up a whole Daryl Clark storyline that got deleted from the episode.

2Speaker 2
00:30:42.12 – 00:30:44.08

Of Clark teaching Daryl Powerpoint.

1Speaker 1
00:30:44.42 – 00:30:44.90

Yes.

2Speaker 2
00:30:45.77 – 00:31:08.06

So now Dwight and Andy are gonna emerge from Andy's office. They have a big announcement they need to leave the office for one whole week. But Dwight has arranged for a temporary workspace, which will be delivered shortly. Cut to everyone outside in the parking lot, and a large bus arrives here. It is everyone, the work bus.

00:31:09.18 – 00:31:16.22

Brent Forrester sent us in an audio clip about the origin of this work bus idea. Let's give it a listen.

1Speaker 1
00:31:17.20 – 00:31:47.54

Where the story came from? We were in the writer's room, and we found this story online. About a Microsoft office in China that had introduced something called the Enterprise Bus, which was just a bus with work desks in it. So the laborers had to continue working, even on their way to work. And it just seems so demoralizing. And we thought God Dwight would love this, and Work Bus was born.

00:31:48.54 – 00:31:56.82

I love it, the enterprise bus. Wow, I didn't know that all these years, I didn't know that's where this idea came from.

2Speaker 2
00:31:57.08 – 00:31:57.48

Me either.

1Speaker 1
00:31:57.82 – 00:32:10.90

I do have a question, yeah. As I watched this bus pull into the parking lot and the Dunder Mifflin crew walks out to see the bus and get on it. I thought, What about the other businesses? Is Vance Refrigeration gonna have to operate on its own work bus?

2Speaker 2
00:32:11.40 – 00:32:20.52

Well, you have something in common with Liz A. from Grantsville, Utah, who said Why didn't Dwight have to provide a work bus for the five families?

1Speaker 1
00:32:21.10 – 00:32:22.40

I thought that immediately.

2Speaker 2
00:32:22.98 – 00:32:30.66

I had a question, which is why is it Dwight's call? Whether or not we keep working while he fixes this problem? Wouldn't it be Andy's?

1Speaker 1
00:32:31.34 – 00:32:32.98

Yes, it would.

2Speaker 2
00:32:33.32 – 00:32:38.00

Yeah, Andy's too distracted being mean to Nellie, I guess, to really think about it.

1Speaker 1
00:32:38.00 – 00:32:40.36

Yeah, Andy could just say, everyone go remote this week.

2Speaker 2
00:32:40.72 – 00:32:43.18

I know remote work wasn't really a thing.

1Speaker 1
00:32:43.26 – 00:32:43.58

It wasn't.

2Speaker 2
00:32:43.78 – 00:32:44.66

Not like it is now.

1Speaker 1
00:32:45.04 – 00:32:47.30

You could forward your calls, right?

2Speaker 2
00:32:47.72 – 00:33:06.58

I think that technology existed. Could you forward it to your house? I know you could forward calls within your phone system in the office. If Pam wanted to go work back by HR, she could forward her calls to a desk back there, but can you forward them to your house?

1Speaker 1
00:33:06.58 – 00:33:13.22

Oh, I don't know, there was all those things. Remember how if you hit Star 86, you could see who just tried to call you, like if someone called you and hung up?

2Speaker 2
00:33:13.56 – 00:33:14.64

Oh yeah, on your landline.

1Speaker 1
00:33:14.74 – 00:33:19.90

On your landline, you could hit Star something I remember that was a big thing in high school, hit star, whatever.

2Speaker 2
00:33:20.26 – 00:33:32.22

Speaking of landlines, I had this whole thing with my phone company. I said I want a landline, and I wanted a true landline. Because if you call 911 from a landline, they know your exact address.

1Speaker 1
00:33:32.24 – 00:33:33.08

Location? Yes.

2Speaker 2
00:33:33.20 – 00:33:42.70

Like, exactly, and you know, my prepper brain? I was like, what if I'm dialing 911 but I can't speak? They'll know my location, right?

1Speaker 1
00:33:43.02 – 00:33:43.14

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:33:43.44 – 00:33:53.68

So I was having all this static on my home line whenever I tried to use it. We never use it. It's literally there for my anxious brains.

1Speaker 1
00:33:53.78 – 00:33:54.08

Yes.

2Speaker 2
00:33:54.52 – 00:34:05.74

Gloom and doom oriented future. Thinking of this time when I'm gonna need to call 911 and not speak. We pay for this landline. I need it, that's all I can say. I sleep better at night with it.

1Speaker 1
00:34:05.74 – 00:34:09.90

I also wanted us to have a landline, we had it for years, we never used it.

2Speaker 2
00:34:09.94 – 00:34:10.18

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:34:10.62 – 00:34:11.78

And Josh got rid of it.

2Speaker 2
00:34:12.40 – 00:34:28.52

Oh well, I couldn't live like that. That also surprises me because I think Josh and I are wired similarly, so I am surprised. I don't even know my home number, it's in my cell phone under my home number, so that if I ever need to know it, but it never rings.

1Speaker 1
00:34:28.64 – 00:34:28.80

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:34:29.04 – 00:34:46.88

If it does ring, we don't answer it because no one has the number anyway. I'm getting off topic. I talked to my phone company because the line was scratchy and it turns out they had put in a digital. It wasn't a true landline, and they tried to tell me they couldn't give me a real landline.

00:34:47.08 – 00:34:50.20

And I argued with them for days.

1Speaker 1
00:34:50.48 – 00:34:52.90

And finally, you got a true landline.

2Speaker 2
00:34:52.90 – 00:35:06.44

I got a true landline, but it was with much effort. Because they wanna like, bundle you, or they wanna like, put it with your cable, they wanna make it part of your cable line. I was like, you are not understanding me. I need a true landline for the day.

1Speaker 1
00:35:06.44 – 00:35:09.12

That I may, for whatever reason.

2Speaker 2
00:35:09.64 – 00:35:19.64

Need to call 911 and not be able to speak? Okay, what if the zombies are coming right or something and I cannot make a noise?

1Speaker 1
00:35:20.20 – 00:35:20.50

Yes.

2Speaker 2
00:35:20.86 – 00:35:24.34

I just wanna dial it and you come.

1Speaker 1
00:35:24.66 – 00:35:25.12

Yes.

2Speaker 2
00:35:25.52 – 00:35:25.84

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:35:26.72 – 00:35:28.20

How did I get on this topic?

2Speaker 2
00:35:28.70 – 00:35:31.04

Oh, we were wondering if you can forward calls.

00:35:34.66 – 00:35:39.14

Oh my goodness, wow. Oh, we don't know if you can forward call.

1Speaker 1
00:35:39.36 – 00:35:49.56

I told Josh, I don't want a cell phone, I want a landline, like a rotary. Like, digga, digga, digga, digga, digga, digga. I want one of those, and I want a beeper, I want a beeper.

2Speaker 2
00:35:49.68 – 00:35:57.40

No, but you were like, you were like, I don't want a cell phone, I want a landline, then I want a beeper, and then I want a camera.

1Speaker 1
00:35:58.04 – 00:36:02.02

And then I want, like an old camera where I take it to the mall, to the kiosk, I know.

2Speaker 2
00:36:02.14 – 00:36:06.54

And I was like, Angela, you are replacing this one device with like four devices.

1Speaker 1
00:36:07.00 – 00:36:14.30

Well, it's cause Josh made me get a new phone and I'm so mad about it. Still, everything is different on it. I don't like it.

2Speaker 2
00:36:14.54 – 00:36:16.00

I know, I know.

1Speaker 1
00:36:16.30 – 00:36:18.06

Okay, sorry, where are we?

2Speaker 2
00:36:18.22 – 00:36:23.88

I don't know. I think where we are is that we are about to start working on this bus.

1Speaker 1
00:36:24.08 – 00:36:24.46

Yes.

2Speaker 2
00:36:24.68 – 00:36:29.38

It's very tight quarters and everyone's trying to get work done, but they're bumping into each other.

1Speaker 1
00:36:29.52 – 00:36:43.64

There is the best scene, it is my favorite scene from this whole entire episode. It made me laugh so hard. It's in deleted scenes on the DVD, I can't play it for you because it's visual.

00:36:43.86 – 00:37:02.86

It's a sight gag. But while the work bus is parked in the parking lot and everyone's trying to get work done, Phyllis comes on the bus with a takeout food container. That clearly is the worst smelling food anyone has ever smelled. I remember shooting this. Everyone's reactions to this stinky food is so hilarious.

00:37:03.30 – 00:37:14.88

John is so funny. He ultimately takes the container away from Phyllis and, like, shoves it into the microwave and shuts the door. Everyone is like, Whoa, I'm gonna put it in stories, cause it's really funny.

2Speaker 2
00:37:15.40 – 00:37:26.34

Well, something I remember from these scenes shooting in the parking lot were how funny John Krasinski and Bryan Cranston were. Because we should note Bryan is a very funny guy.

1Speaker 1
00:37:26.62 – 00:37:27.62

Yeah, he's very quick-witted.

2Speaker 2
00:37:27.86 – 00:37:43.22

The two of them were doing bits and it was really lightening the mood because it was very hot on this bus. When we're on that bus and we're all cramped and we're like pretending, like, we're being hot and like, annoyed. We were pretty much hot and annoyed because there was no air conditioner.

1Speaker 1
00:37:43.58 – 00:37:59.98

They removed the air conditioner. We were just in a hot tin. Can yes, to give you an idea of what all they put inside this bus to make it a quote work bus? I wanna paint a picture for you guys of how many things were inside this little tiny, basically airport shuttle bus.

00:38:00.46 – 00:38:23.78

We had desks, rolling chairs, lamps, a water cooler with real water in it, a printer, computers, papers, pencils, pens, notepads, tape dispensers, staplers, little mini fans, a microwave, a giant screen TV, a coffee maker, coffee pot, coffee mugs. 14 actors and four crew members.

2Speaker 2
00:38:24.52 – 00:38:24.76

Yes.

1Speaker 1
00:38:24.96 – 00:38:52.64

Yeah, that's what was all in the bus, and I have to share one other thing. When I was going through documenting everything that was in the bus. And I looked at the chairs, I got a lump in my throat. Because I still have one of the work bus chairs that you see us sitting in. It's the chair that I sit in whenever we podcast from home in our closet. And the reason I have it is I was moving and I did not have a chair for my desk at home.

00:38:52.90 – 00:39:00.66

And Phil Shea was like, Ange at the end of work. Bus. I'll just snag one of these chairs for you. He always was looking out for us, and I still have that chair.

2Speaker 2
00:39:01.34 – 00:39:07.06

Yeah, you guys know, Phil passed last year and that story is making me emotional.

1Speaker 1
00:39:07.26 – 00:39:07.82

I know.

2Speaker 2
00:39:08.42 – 00:39:09.28

Because he was-.

1Speaker 1
00:39:09.30 – 00:39:10.40

I had to share it, though.

2Speaker 2
00:39:10.84 – 00:39:23.68

Oh, of course, and that's the thing about Phil. Was that like, you'd just be having conversation with him? You're just telling him I'm moving and this and that, and you're talking, and then he's filing that away and he's thinking-.

1Speaker 1
00:39:24.22 – 00:39:25.36

Do you need a chair? What do you need?

2Speaker 2
00:39:25.44 – 00:39:26.72

Yeah, I'll get you a chair.

1Speaker 1
00:39:27.16 – 00:39:34.38

You can take one of these. That's exactly what he did. And then I. At the end of the day, I was walking to my car and he was like, Ange, here, I got you a chair.

2Speaker 2
00:39:34.92 – 00:39:44.10

So cool, I did wanna point out something that you mentioned here in your list, Angela, and that you know about your chair, which is that they are rolly.

1Speaker 1
00:39:44.10 – 00:39:45.18

Yes, they roll.

2Speaker 2
00:39:45.60 – 00:39:47.58

So just something I want us to note.

1Speaker 1
00:39:47.82 – 00:39:54.18

As we're moving in a moving vehicle, right? Yes, I did have a thought as well. I don't know if anyone else watching had this thought.

00:39:54.54 – 00:40:02.66

Much in the way my brain goes to the conference room of like, who's setting this up, who's moving all this out there? Who set up this work bus? How long did it take?

2Speaker 2
00:40:02.88 – 00:40:06.22

I think the idea is that Dwight rented it as is.

1Speaker 1
00:40:06.22 – 00:40:06.64

Fully loaded.

2Speaker 2
00:40:06.76 – 00:40:10.32

Yeah, that this is an item that you can get.

1Speaker 1
00:40:10.50 – 00:40:11.70

It rolls in like that.

2Speaker 2
00:40:12.10 – 00:40:13.14

That's kind of a pun.

1Speaker 1
00:40:13.72 – 00:40:14.16

Yes.

2Speaker 2
00:40:14.80 – 00:40:29.20

It is a pun, it's not kind of a pun, it is a pun, all right. Well, next up, Erin notices that Nellie has an adoption application form, and Nellie says, Maybe you can give me some help because you were once adopted.

00:40:29.70 – 00:40:38.42

But Erin says, Oh, no, I never ended up getting adopted. I got close a few times, but it didn't happen. I don't know why, maybe just because I'm unlovable, my gosh.

00:40:38.62 – 00:40:39.32

So sad.

1Speaker 1
00:40:39.82 – 00:40:40.14

I know.

2Speaker 2
00:40:40.26 – 00:40:47.62

But she agrees to help Nellie on the application, just with her general knowledge, but she says, Please don't tell Andy, I'm helping you.

1Speaker 1
00:40:48.40 – 00:40:52.90

And Nellie knows instantly why, because I guess he refers to her as the Loch Ness monster.

2Speaker 2
00:40:53.30 – 00:40:53.54

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:40:53.92 – 00:41:10.78

So everyone is already starting to get grumpy being in such tight quarters with one another. Angela's gonna go. And in the overhead compartment is a printer. I don't know if you knew what she was doing. It said that there was a printer in there that she's supposed to reach for. And all these papers come down.

00:41:11.32 – 00:41:22.72

It spills a drink into Pam's lap. In the meantime, Clark has been pacing because he, I guess, has to stretch his legs, and Stanley gets really pissed off about that. Things are coming to a head.

2Speaker 2
00:41:23.02 – 00:41:40.02

Yeah, when the paper falls down, it falls on Pam, it knocks her coffee onto her lap. She has to get off the bus. Jim is freaking out because the whole point here was that he was gonna make Pam's week better, and now Pam is covered in coffee. And she is working on this tiny bus.

00:41:40.02 – 00:41:44.36

So her week has gotten worse. And his what is it called guilt gifting?

1Speaker 1
00:41:44.72 – 00:41:45.90

Yeah, it's not working out.

2Speaker 2
00:41:45.92 – 00:41:57.76

It's not working out. So he decides to convince Andy that they should fire up this bus and go get some pie. Andy agrees.

1Speaker 1
00:41:58.26 – 00:41:58.66

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:41:59.04 – 00:42:01.80

Next stop, Laverne's Pie's tires fixed also.

1Speaker 1
00:42:02.46 – 00:42:06.42

Pam was getting on the bus. When she hears this, she's happy, all right, pie.

2Speaker 2
00:42:06.96 – 00:42:20.38

So the bus pulls out of the driveway. But it reveals that Clark and Daryl have been left behind. We had a fan question from Laura A. in South Jordan, Utah, who said, Did Daryl and Clark get left behind for some reason?

1Speaker 1
00:42:21.20 – 00:42:40.84

Okay, so earlier in this episode, when we had Daryl and Clark in the kitchen and Daryl's asking Clark to teach him Powerpoint, that was actually a whole extended storyline. So, Laura, you are right, something did happen. A lot of this plays out in the deleted scenes on the DVD, but there were also some nuggets in the script. I'm gonna share both.

00:42:41.36 – 00:42:50.78

There was a scene where Daryl walks up to Jim and says, Hey, I'm learning Powerpoint for my new career, you know? Kind of like, wink, wink. Here's how it starts. Let's hear it.

2Speaker 2
00:42:51.82 – 00:43:00.22

Hey, if you don't wanna teach me Powerpoint, just say so I don't wanna teach you Powerpoint. come on, just show me the Powerpoint. just do the tutorial, you're the tutorial.

1Speaker 1
00:43:00.54 – 00:43:11.42

No, dude, I'm not, I'm not the tutorial. You could be okay, listen, I know. Quicken, after effects, Photoshop and Autocad. Which is like the equivalent of owning a pickup truck. Hey, you free this weekend.

00:43:11.56 – 00:43:20.56

Yeah, man, let's hang out. Oh, how about instead of hanging out, you design my website? Well, let me just delete you out of my phone real quick because you suck. That's what I'm dealing with with Daryl right now.

00:43:21.02 – 00:43:28.62

So that would have set up their whole runner, yes. And then when the bus pulls away, this is how the scene read in the shooting draft.

2Speaker 2
00:43:28.70 – 00:43:29.02

Okay.

1Speaker 1
00:43:29.30 – 00:43:43.70

The camera whips to caffeine corner, where Daryl and Clark are sipping cocoa and reading magazines. Daryl, without looking up, says stop, Clark says come back, Daryl says Too late, and then Daryl turns to Clark and says, So, ready to teach me Powerpoint?

00:43:44.60 – 00:44:01.04

Clark says, Nope, Daryl goes, I'll take that as a yes, and Clark goes, Can't we just play video games? and Daryl goes? We can play Powerpoint? Then Clark is gonna have a talking head where he's getting really frustrated that Daryl is just driving him crazy, wanting to learn Powerpoint.

00:44:01.44 – 00:44:13.26

And then there's another scene where Daryl is trying to copy and paste an image. And anyway, he just drives Clark absolutely bananas. But it was a whole runner. That's what was happening back at Dunder Mifflin.

2Speaker 2
00:44:13.64 – 00:44:26.80

I can't believe they didn't just go home. No kidding. Well, I think we should take a break because when we come back, all of the mishaps will be occurring and we have a lot to say about those.

1Speaker 1
00:44:27.16 – 00:44:27.58

Oh, we do.

2Speaker 2
00:44:39.34 – 00:44:50.24

We are back and it's time for a roll call. Yes, we are traveling down the road. We're happy we're all singing this song, everyone's going to get pie.

1Speaker 1
00:44:50.48 – 00:44:51.70

This is a happy time.

2Speaker 2
00:44:52.36 – 00:45:09.60

Writer Brent Forrester said that this was inspired by the scene in Spike Lee's movie Get on the Bus. When they do a Shibuya roll call, we got a lot of fan mail about this, Taryn E. from Chicago, Illinois, said. Were there any alts to the Shibuya Roll call song? And Laura A.

00:45:09.66 – 00:45:13.82

From South Jordan, Utah said Were there more roll calls that didn't make it in?

1Speaker 1
00:45:14.18 – 00:45:30.58

Oh, Taryn and Laura, do I have stuff for you guys? There were so many extra Shibuya roll calls. Okay, there's a ton in the candy bag. Alts. I also want to play you an extended part of Shibuya Roll Call that's in the deleted scenes on the DVDs.

00:45:30.58 – 00:45:33.78

Let's start there, then we're going to dive into the candy bag.

2Speaker 2
00:45:34.08 – 00:45:42.30

I am so glad you're sharing this, Angela, because we shot this for so long. This was stuck in my head for weeks.

1Speaker 1
00:45:42.50 – 00:45:42.84

Oh yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:45:43.20 – 00:45:48.66

I mean, we spent hours on this and so little made it into the episode. I cannot wait to hear this.

?Unknown Speaker
00:45:49.72 – 00:45:51.16

Shibuya roll call.

2Speaker 2
00:45:51.54 – 00:45:58.00

Shibuya Yeah, Yeah, Shibuya roll call. My name is Phyllis. Yeah, and I'm married to Bob. Yeah.

?Unknown Speaker
00:45:58.26 – 00:46:03.78

Let's see. Yeah, I like television, roll call, I'm not very good at this.

00:46:04.06 – 00:46:05.08

Roll call.

1Speaker 1
00:46:05.38 – 00:46:08.36

Shibuya Yeah, yeah, shibuya roll call.

2Speaker 2
00:46:08.46 – 00:46:09.44

Name is Oscar.

?Unknown Speaker
00:46:09.64 – 00:46:11.12

Yeah, why am I here?

2Speaker 2
00:46:11.36 – 00:46:19.12

Yeah, I've clearly chosen the wrong career. Roll call Shibuya. Yeah, yeah, Shibuya. roll call Dwight your turn.

00:46:19.50 – 00:46:24.94

I'm not doing it. Yeah, you're wasting your time. Yeah, no, this doesn't count.

00:46:25.24 – 00:46:28.86

Yeah, I will not rhyme, damn it, roll call.

1Speaker 1
00:46:30.52 – 00:46:36.54

First of all, just listening to all of that just made me smile. Phyllis really did lose it, laughing. She did. That's her real laugh.

2Speaker 2
00:46:36.56 – 00:46:36.96

It is.

1Speaker 1
00:46:37.14 – 00:46:39.38

And it was just such a fun day.

2Speaker 2
00:46:39.74 – 00:46:41.76

And we were all really having fun.

1Speaker 1
00:46:41.88 – 00:46:43.08

Angela, it must've been hard for you.

2Speaker 2
00:46:43.08 – 00:46:53.64

Because your character was not supposed to want to do this, no, and you must've felt the energy from the rest of us. I mean, this was probably the happiest we were on this shoot, I know.

00:46:53.66 – 00:46:54.60

With the bus moving.

1Speaker 1
00:46:54.72 – 00:46:56.86

And I was not allowed to participate.

2Speaker 2
00:46:56.86 – 00:46:57.42

I know.

1Speaker 1
00:46:57.70 – 00:47:06.52

I had to sit there and roll my eyes. So there were a few characters in the shooting draft that didn't want to participate. They just want to work when they're at work, they want to work, yes.

00:47:06.78 – 00:47:21.10

Stanley, Angela and Dwight Yes, there is a deleted Angela talking head where she's just like, Listen, this is nonsense, you know? And then Stanley, actually in the shooting draft, has a Shibuya roll call, he does.

2Speaker 2
00:47:21.18 – 00:47:21.52

Yes.

1Speaker 1
00:47:21.58 – 00:47:33.40

And a few other characters do, too. And there's fun alts. I want to read them to you, okay, before I start reading all of these candy bag alts for Shibuya roll. Call Cassie, Sam, Jenna, I'm going to need your help.

2Speaker 2
00:47:33.82 – 00:47:35.86

Oh, dear, please don't make me do this again.

1Speaker 1
00:47:35.98 – 00:47:36.92

You have to do the yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:47:37.02 – 00:47:37.36

Oh, gosh.

1Speaker 1
00:47:37.38 – 00:47:40.02

You don't have to do shibuya roll call, I just need you to go, yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:47:40.14 – 00:47:40.44

Okay.

1Speaker 1
00:47:40.54 – 00:47:40.80

Okay.

2Speaker 2
00:47:41.08 – 00:47:43.68

All right, guys, I fear this is already going to be in my head for days.

1Speaker 1
00:47:43.68 – 00:47:46.08

SAM CASSIE So we're going to start with Stanley.

2Speaker 2
00:47:46.46 – 00:47:46.76

Okay.

1Speaker 1
00:47:46.98 – 00:47:52.06

Stanley is doing his crossword, and this is what he says, You can call me Stanley.

2Speaker 2
00:47:52.38 – 00:47:52.68

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:47:52.86 – 00:47:54.04

It wouldn't hurt.

2Speaker 2
00:47:54.36 – 00:47:54.70

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:47:54.70 – 00:47:55.94

But what I really need?

2Speaker 2
00:47:56.18 – 00:47:56.50

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:47:56.92 – 00:48:00.28

Is a three letter word for shirt roll call.

00:48:02.60 – 00:48:04.82

Okay, here's the Jim Candy Bag alt.

2Speaker 2
00:48:05.26 – 00:48:07.04

You can call me Jim, yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:48:07.20 – 00:48:08.16

Or Dr. Fly?

2Speaker 2
00:48:08.56 – 00:48:08.84

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:48:09.04 – 00:48:10.02

Step on the court.

2Speaker 2
00:48:10.40 – 00:48:10.68

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:48:10.80 – 00:48:11.82

I'll show you why.

2Speaker 2
00:48:11.98 – 00:48:12.82

Roll call.

00:48:14.34 – 00:48:14.82

Okay.

1Speaker 1
00:48:15.04 – 00:48:21.54

So Andy had a few for the first one. Andy is sitting next to Erin and it went like, this, My name is Andy.

2Speaker 2
00:48:21.84 – 00:48:22.20

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:48:22.40 – 00:48:23.50

Her hair is red.

2Speaker 2
00:48:23.82 – 00:48:24.18

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:48:24.18 – 00:48:25.48

I'll be her Mandy.

2Speaker 2
00:48:25.84 – 00:48:26.18

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:48:26.30 – 00:48:27.38

Until I'm dead.

2Speaker 2
00:48:27.58 – 00:48:28.24

Roll call.

1Speaker 1
00:48:28.78 – 00:48:31.92

Here's a second one for Andy. My name is Andy.

2Speaker 2
00:48:32.20 – 00:48:32.50

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:48:32.68 – 00:48:35.78

I'm regional manager, yeah, my favorite bird type.

2Speaker 2
00:48:36.04 – 00:48:36.28

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:48:36.44 – 00:48:37.62

Is the Scarlet tanager?

2Speaker 2
00:48:37.94 – 00:48:38.64

Roll call.

1Speaker 1
00:48:39.58 – 00:48:43.46

Okay, here we go for Nellie. my name is Nellie.

2Speaker 2
00:48:43.74 – 00:48:44.08

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:48:44.34 – 00:48:45.98

I drank quite a large mountain dew.

2Speaker 2
00:48:46.20 – 00:48:50.26

Yeah, now I'm on a bus, yeah, and there's no loo roll call.

1Speaker 1
00:48:51.14 – 00:48:54.00

Another one for Nellie. My name is Nellie.

2Speaker 2
00:48:54.28 – 00:48:54.50

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:48:54.66 – 00:48:55.74

You can buy me a drink.

2Speaker 2
00:48:56.08 – 00:48:56.36

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:48:56.50 – 00:48:57.56

I'm a single lady.

2Speaker 2
00:48:57.94 – 00:49:00.58

Yeah, wink, wink and a clink roll call.

1Speaker 1
00:49:01.06 – 00:49:10.66

And then Oscar, by the way, Brent Forrester shared with us. The one that Oscar does in the actual episode was his favorite of all of them.

2Speaker 2
00:49:10.78 – 00:49:11.14

Yes.

1Speaker 1
00:49:11.42 – 00:49:16.08

But here was Oscar's candy bag. Alt really made me laugh.

2Speaker 2
00:49:16.78 – 00:49:20.42

My name is Oscar. Yeah, I like to read, yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:49:20.60 – 00:49:31.96

Mostly nonfiction, yeah, because when I read modern fiction, I always wind up disappointed. There's too much focus on innovating the form at the expense of a good story, well told, and, frankly, good stories are what readers want.

2Speaker 2
00:49:31.96 – 00:49:35.02

And the publishing industry needs roll call.

00:49:36.90 – 00:49:37.88

All right.

1Speaker 1
00:49:38.08 – 00:49:43.40

Taryn and Laura, There you go, all the candy bag, alts and the extras on the DVDs.

2Speaker 2
00:49:44.16 – 00:49:58.02

Well, I loved that, Angela, and like I said, we had so much fun shooting this. In fact, we were laughing so much. This is the scene where Ellie wet her pants, Yes.

00:49:58.58 – 00:50:07.10

This was the third scene we shot this day. We'd been shooting on the bus for two days now. This was our last day on the bus. We were all a little bit goofy.

00:50:08.04 – 00:50:14.40

You know what? I'm gonna let Ellie tell you the story. Here it is, Hello Jenna.

00:50:14.86 – 00:50:22.06

Hello Angela, hello office ladies, listeners everywhere, this is Ellie Kemper.

00:50:22.54 – 00:51:03.82

I am here to share with you the chilling tale of when I, a grown woman in her thirties, wet my pants. That is, I went pee-pee in my pants. During the filming of the office episode called Work Bus, which you ladies might recall, we had nicknamed Death Bus. Because a lot of things kept going wrong during that episode, things out of anybody's control. It was just one of those weeks where life happens and things kept going wrong. One of those things was my incontinence.

00:51:04.48 – 00:51:29.66

Here's what happened. John Krasinski was leading a song called Shabuya Roll Call and something that John was doing, and I can't recall what it was. It was making me laugh so very hard off camera and I think it was just a face he was making and I don't know I had. There was no bathroom on the work slash death bus.

00:51:30.02 – 00:51:44.18

There was no restroom and this is not the first time this has happened. To me, it's like the most wonderful thing and the most excruciating thing because I'm laughing so hard at something. So therefore I'm filled with such joy and it's such a nice moment.

00:51:44.18 – 00:52:07.22

And then immediately followed by sheer horror as I realize I've laughed so hard that I've lost control of my body. And I've gone pee-pee in my, well, actually, in my skirt. And that's happened to me a number of times in my life and that was one of them. That was one of the occasions and I had sat, I was sitting down on the bus seat when that happened.

00:52:07.42 – 00:52:25.04

And as I realized what had just happened, I thought, Well, I won't be able to get up until wrap. I will just sit here in my mess until we wrap for the day. But of course, that wasn't realistic. They had to change the lights, they had to do things with the bus.

00:52:25.62 – 00:52:48.22

And I got up and yeah. And Brian Baumgartner was the first person to say, Ellie, did you wet your pants? and I said, Yeah, I did, Brian. And I just wanna say none. Not one of the ladies on the bus was in any way phased. Oh you what? Okay? Well, does anybody have an extra pair?

00:52:48.32 – 00:53:04.02

Does any? Do we have a wardrobe change? Everybody took it, all the ladies took it in stride and the men were grossed out. Okay, I don't know if every single one was, I just remember the men unsure at all what to do with this.

00:53:04.42 – 00:53:14.16

And all of the women thought, Well, that's just another day of being a woman. So that is the story of me wetting my pants on the office work bus.

00:53:15.84 – 00:53:27.78

Thank you for letting me share this cautionary tale, and I hope all of you will be able to sleep tonight knowing this haunted, haunted story.

1Speaker 1
00:53:27.78 – 00:53:29.70

That happened in real life.

2Speaker 2
00:53:29.88 – 00:53:38.28

Okay, bye, oh my goodness Ellie, I'll just never forget it. She was still laughing so hard.

1Speaker 1
00:53:38.46 – 00:53:54.56

Yes, then at the fact that she had peed, yes, I'll never forget. When she got up, the wardrobe van came up to help her get her change. When she got up, we had grabbed paper towels and put it on the pee spot on her chair.

2Speaker 2
00:53:54.82 – 00:53:59.90

Yeah, there wasn't much, there was some little napkins and then like papers.

1Speaker 1
00:54:00.26 – 00:54:02.66

We just put it on top, dab it.

2Speaker 2
00:54:03.82 – 00:54:04.52

Oh my goodness.

1Speaker 1
00:54:04.84 – 00:54:05.46

Oh my gosh.

2Speaker 2
00:54:05.92 – 00:54:14.04

Well, I remember this too, because I remember we were like, Oh my gosh, we're always gonna remember this episode because it's the episode where Ellie peed her pants.

1Speaker 1
00:54:14.36 – 00:54:14.62

Yeah.
