2Speaker 2
00:00.00 – 00:02.44

Every time I cook, I set my smoke alarms.

1Speaker 1
00:02.78 – 00:03.52

It's terrifying.

00:03.54 – 00:05.10

Oh, but that's a sign of good cooking.

00:05.26 – 00:06.06

That's what I'm told anyway.

2Speaker 2
00:06.26 – 00:07.54

Or bad cooking.

00:08.14 – 00:08.88

Intensive. Lots of smoke.

1Speaker 1
00:08.90 – 00:09.46

You're working hard.

00:10.46 – 00:12.54

Maybe got one of those hood fans over the-

2Speaker 2
00:12.54 – 00:15.54

I do, so now I turn that on and open windows.

00:16.16 – 00:18.12

So, I mean, you should really try my hood.

1Speaker 1
00:18.12 – 00:19.60

You do that preemptively?

2Speaker 2
00:19.84 – 00:21.36

I do it preemptively now.

00:21.70 – 00:22.50

They're just so sensitive.

00:22.50 – 00:23.86

You can start off.

00:23.88 – 00:25.74

I'm like, all right, gotta air this out.

1Speaker 1
00:26.56 – 00:27.74

Layla, it's 100 degrees.

00:28.10 – 00:29.24

Why are your windows open?

2Speaker 2
00:29.24 – 00:30.58

Yeah, well, I'm cooking.

00:31.38 – 00:34.28

My meals are delicious with a tinge of charcoal.

00:36.10 – 00:37.86

I'm kidding, I'm a great cook-ish.

1Speaker 1
00:38.52 – 00:39.24

No, I believe it.

00:41.70 – 00:44.74

Donald Trump posed for a mugshot and dodged a debate

00:44.74 – 00:46.78

and sat for an interview on social media.

2Speaker 2
00:46.92 – 00:49.40

It's been a really busy week for the former president,

00:49.58 – 00:51.30

so what will it mean for his campaign?

1Speaker 1
00:51.58 – 00:53.46

I'm Steve Inskeep with Layla Favreau,

00:53.54 – 00:56.80

and this is Up First from NPR News.

00:59.88 – 01:02.50

A musician who seemed to have come out of nowhere

01:02.50 – 01:06.20

has a number one song that some extremists may like.

5Speaker 5
01:06.78 – 01:09.48

It could potentially open up a wider audience

01:09.48 – 01:12.22

that they might normally not have access to.

1Speaker 1
01:12.46 – 01:14.88

What does Rich Man North of Richmond say?

2Speaker 2
01:15.10 – 01:17.08

And a mercenary leader's last act

01:17.08 – 01:18.36

before his presumed death

01:18.36 – 01:20.62

was to recruit for operations in Africa.

01:21.02 – 01:23.80

Will the Wagner group's influence continue to grow there?

01:24.04 – 01:26.48

Stay with us, we have the news you need to start your day.

6Speaker 6
01:34.18 – 01:38.32

On the TED Radio Hour, MIT psychologist Sherry Turkle,

01:38.72 – 01:41.58

her latest research into the intimate relationships

01:41.58 – 01:44.28

people are having with chatbots.

01:44.82 – 01:49.08

Technologies that say, I care about you, I love you,

01:49.28 – 01:51.86

I'm here for you, take care of me.

01:52.30 – 01:55.38

The pros and cons of artificial intimacy.

01:55.74 – 01:58.02

That's on the TED Radio Hour from NPR.

2Speaker 2
01:59.90 – 02:03.54

From being an unseen presence on a Milwaukee debate stage

02:03.54 – 02:06.04

to posing for a historic mugshot,

02:06.40 – 02:08.00

a shot heard around the world, if you will,

02:08.36 – 02:11.20

former President Donald Trump has had a busy week.

1Speaker 1
02:11.30 – 02:13.58

Yeah, Wednesday night, eight of his rivals

02:13.58 – 02:15.12

made a case for themselves,

02:15.34 – 02:18.16

although most avoided direct criticism of the front runner

02:18.16 – 02:19.70

they, in theory, are trying to catch.

02:19.84 – 02:22.62

Trump spun his own narrative in an interview on X,

02:22.74 – 02:24.78

the former Twitter, and then last night,

02:24.84 – 02:26.72

he was booked on 13 felony counts

02:26.72 – 02:29.18

related to election interference in Georgia.

2Speaker 2
02:29.58 – 02:32.12

NPR White House correspondent Franco Ordonez

02:32.12 – 02:35.14

covers the four-time indicted former president

02:35.14 – 02:37.74

as well as the president currently in the Oval Office,

02:37.98 – 02:40.84

and he's here to unpack Trump's week and the weeks ahead.

02:40.94 – 02:41.48

Good morning, Franco.

4Speaker 4
02:41.74 – 02:42.52

Good morning, Layla.

2Speaker 2
02:42.78 – 02:44.52

So let's talk about this week,

02:44.60 – 02:46.60

topped off with a mugshot, as we mentioned.

02:46.78 – 02:48.14

What were the highs and the lows?

02:48.16 – 02:49.72

Although I guess I can guess the low there.

4Speaker 4
02:50.14 – 02:51.40

Yeah, I mean, it was not really

02:51.40 – 02:52.90

the best week for Trump at all.

02:53.20 – 02:55.38

I mean, you can make the case that he made the right move

02:55.38 – 02:58.56

skipping the debate, and tens of millions of people

02:58.56 – 03:00.12

also watched his interview

03:00.12 – 03:02.38

with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

03:02.80 – 03:06.34

It really was a defiant act of counter-programming

03:06.34 – 03:09.48

where he attacked several of his Republican rivals on stage,

03:09.82 – 03:12.40

also President Biden and Fox News itself.

03:12.92 – 03:15.54

I mean, he argued that it was not worth it to debate

03:15.54 – 03:16.92

when he was so far ahead.

03:17.08 – 03:19.30

But all this, the debate, his interview,

03:19.44 – 03:21.44

was really, really overshadowed,

03:21.48 – 03:23.94

but as you guys were saying, his Georgia indictment

03:23.94 – 03:26.56

and the trip he took to the Fulton County jail yesterday

03:26.56 – 03:27.60

to turn himself in.

2Speaker 2
03:28.08 – 03:30.78

And yet, with the mugshot, the criminal indictments,

03:30.92 – 03:31.80

the sets of fingerprints,

03:31.96 – 03:33.98

he's still in the lead for the GOP nomination.

03:34.14 – 03:36.24

Can anything shake his support

03:36.24 – 03:37.62

within the Republican voting base?

4Speaker 4
03:38.54 – 03:41.00

I mean, it doesn't look that way, certainly not yet.

03:41.12 – 03:42.96

I mean, at the debate, as Steve was saying,

03:43.00 – 03:46.02

his top rivals really continued to largely stay away

03:46.02 – 03:49.78

from directly attacking him, and those who tried were booed.

03:50.08 – 03:53.46

I mean, any line of support for Trump was widely cheered.

03:53.46 – 03:57.64

I will note, though, that most on stage backed Pence

03:57.64 – 03:59.78

for his actions on January 6th,

03:59.82 – 04:01.52

saying he did the right thing

04:01.52 – 04:03.94

and rejecting Trump's efforts to get him

04:03.94 – 04:05.82

to stop the certification of the vote.

2Speaker 2
04:06.06 – 04:09.08

So after a busy few days with rivals debating his relevance

04:09.08 – 04:10.56

and a booking in Georgia,

04:10.76 – 04:12.50

what's coming up for Trump in the weeks ahead?

4Speaker 4
04:12.80 – 04:14.40

I mean, the indictments are just the beginning.

04:14.70 – 04:16.54

Last night, we covered the trip to the jail.

04:16.70 – 04:17.98

He got the mugshot, as you noted.

04:18.22 – 04:20.70

And, you know, this is just one of four indictments.

04:20.70 – 04:22.90

The first hearing related to January 6th

04:22.90 – 04:24.74

is on Monday on federal charges,

04:24.90 – 04:27.14

and he's not stopping run for president.

04:27.62 – 04:29.60

I mean, within hours, his Super PAC

04:29.60 – 04:33.30

was circulating his mugshot to stoke support and raise money.

04:33.58 – 04:35.42

And apparently, he's returned to Twitter,

04:35.62 – 04:38.58

or as it's X, as it's called now, posting his mugshot.

04:38.72 – 04:40.98

It's the first time he's posted in more than two years.

2Speaker 2
04:41.20 – 04:43.14

And PRs Franco, Ordonez, thanks, Franco.

4Speaker 4
04:43.46 – 04:43.84

Thank you.

2Speaker 2
04:44.36 – 04:46.34

At the Republican debate in Wisconsin,

04:46.56 – 04:49.82

this was playing before the candidates even spoke.

04:49.82 – 04:52.02

These rich men north of Richmond,

04:52.38 – 04:56.70

Lord knows they all just want to have total control.

1Speaker 1
04:57.42 – 04:59.06

It's by Oliver Anthony.

04:59.32 – 05:02.00

He is the first musician ever of any genre

05:02.00 – 05:04.66

to top the Billboard 100 chart

05:04.66 – 05:06.38

without making the list beforehand.

05:06.68 – 05:08.96

That is how quickly his fame has risen.

05:09.48 – 05:12.04

His song takes the perspective of a working man

05:12.04 – 05:13.86

who thinks the rich take advantage of him.

05:13.90 – 05:16.68

That's a familiar theme in country and all sorts of music.

05:17.28 – 05:19.98

The song also nods to some conspiracy theories,

05:20.10 – 05:23.00

which has caught the attention of experts on extremism.

2Speaker 2
05:23.20 – 05:24.80

So joining us now to discuss

05:24.80 – 05:28.30

is NPR's domestic extremism correspondent, Odette Youssef.

05:28.38 – 05:28.98

Good morning, Odette.

8Speaker 8
05:29.06 – 05:29.48

Hey, Lila.

2Speaker 2
05:30.08 – 05:33.18

So why exactly is this song raising red flags?

8Speaker 8
05:33.72 – 05:36.10

Well, there's one line in it, and it goes,

05:36.26 – 05:38.90

I wish politicians would look out for minors,

05:39.06 – 05:40.42

that's minors with an E,

05:41.10 – 05:43.76

and not just minors on an island somewhere.

05:43.98 – 05:45.76

And that second minors is with an O.

05:46.68 – 05:49.82

And this is a reference to the Jeffrey Epstein scandal.

05:50.50 – 05:53.60

And Lila, you'll recall that Epstein was a sexual predator

05:53.60 – 05:55.52

who died in jail in 2019.

05:56.44 – 05:59.90

But the far right continues to circulate conspiracy theories

05:59.90 – 06:02.58

about the circumstances of his death.

06:03.32 – 06:05.76

And Anthony appears to nod to elements

06:05.76 – 06:07.96

of the baseless QAnon conspiracy theory

06:07.96 – 06:11.28

that claims that powerful elites are sex trafficking children

06:11.92 – 06:13.74

in some of his other online content.

06:14.38 – 06:17.30

So it's really remarkable to hear these ideas

06:17.30 – 06:19.30

in a song that's topping the charts.

06:19.86 – 06:21.46

And it's concerning to people

06:21.46 – 06:23.26

who study the spread of conspiracy theories

06:23.26 – 06:24.54

and extremist ideologies.

2Speaker 2
06:24.86 – 06:26.20

So tell us more about that.

06:26.28 – 06:27.46

I mean, this is a song.

06:27.74 – 06:30.48

Lots of people may simply like it for its musical qualities.

06:31.42 – 06:34.56

How can it play a role in spreading extremism?

8Speaker 8
06:35.24 – 06:37.60

I spoke to Jared Holt about this.

06:37.70 – 06:40.16

He's with the Institute for Strategic Dialogue.

06:40.36 – 06:41.82

And he says political movements

06:41.82 – 06:45.48

always look for cultural artifacts like music or movies

06:45.48 – 06:47.70

that can help popularize their ideas.

06:48.22 – 06:51.92

But the problem here is that the song has been seized on

06:51.92 – 06:53.80

by some far right influencers,

06:54.68 – 06:58.20

some of whom peddle antisemitism and transphobia.

5Speaker 5
06:58.84 – 07:02.40

And if these far right figures are successful

07:03.06 – 07:05.58

in associating themselves directly with this song,

07:05.82 – 07:08.88

it could potentially open up a wider audience

07:08.88 – 07:12.48

that they might normally not have access to all the time.

2Speaker 2
07:13.42 – 07:15.40

Okay, so concern around opportunists

07:15.40 – 07:18.20

latching onto the song to boost their own profiles.

07:18.64 – 07:20.44

But is there concern that the song itself

07:20.44 – 07:23.46

could actually turn listeners into conspiracy theorists?

8Speaker 8
07:24.80 – 07:27.38

The concern is that mainstreaming this stuff

07:27.38 – 07:28.82

helps to normalize it.

07:29.46 – 07:31.48

Michael Crenshaw saw this

07:31.48 – 07:34.50

when he was a black anti-racist skinhead

07:34.50 – 07:36.28

in Chicago 40 years ago.

07:36.80 – 07:39.52

He said that racist music from the UK

07:39.52 – 07:42.44

played a role in shifting the attitudes

07:42.44 – 07:43.82

of people around him.

7Speaker 7
07:44.16 – 07:48.84

One day they would have a Confederate flag patch or button

07:49.56 – 07:53.74

or they would have a screwdriver shirt on.

07:54.70 – 07:57.38

And sometimes they would still be nice to me.

07:57.62 – 08:00.20

And so then I would have to sit there and figure out like,

08:00.38 – 08:02.16

this dude listens to music

08:02.16 – 08:03.88

that talks about killing my people,

08:04.40 – 08:06.48

but he's still acting like everything's okay.

8Speaker 8
08:06.86 – 08:10.10

So it's not like we're gonna see anything change overnight,

08:10.48 – 08:12.92

but if we continue to see these messages

08:12.92 – 08:16.08

mainstreamed over time, it could shift people's beliefs.

08:16.90 – 08:19.30

And I'll note Layla, NPR did reach out

08:19.30 – 08:21.08

asking to speak with Oliver Anthony,

08:21.22 – 08:22.56

but received no response.

2Speaker 2
08:23.00 – 08:24.64

NPR's Odette Yusuf, thank you.

8Speaker 8
08:25.04 – 08:25.58

Thank you.

08:25.58 – 08:25.90

Thank you.

2Speaker 2
08:31.48 – 08:33.96

U.S. military officials think they know

08:33.96 – 08:36.62

what happened to a Russian mercenary leader.

08:36.88 – 08:38.74

General Pat Ryder is at the Pentagon

08:38.74 – 08:40.88

where intelligence analysts have observed

08:40.88 – 08:43.58

the plane crash that involved Yevgeny Prigozhin.

4Speaker 4
08:43.76 – 08:46.20

Well, our initial assessment is that it's likely

3Speaker 3
08:46.94 – 08:48.10

Prigozhin was killed.

1Speaker 1
08:48.46 – 08:50.76

Prigozhin left behind some unfinished business.

08:51.08 – 08:53.60

Days before his death, he released a video

08:53.60 – 08:55.56

that talked about recruiting strong men

08:55.56 – 08:57.74

for operations in Africa.

08:58.30 – 09:00.50

So what is his Wagner group doing there?

2Speaker 2
09:00.96 – 09:03.38

NPR's Africa correspondent, Emmanuel Akinwoto,

09:03.86 – 09:05.16

joins us from Lagos.

09:05.26 – 09:05.86

Good morning, Emmanuel.

3Speaker 3
09:06.12 – 09:06.56

Good morning.

2Speaker 2
09:06.92 – 09:10.96

So how extensive is Wagner's presence in Africa right now?

3Speaker 3
09:11.36 – 09:12.72

Well, Wagner's significant

09:12.72 – 09:15.30

in a handful of African countries,

09:15.80 – 09:18.04

and they've become key there providing support

09:18.04 – 09:19.32

for some fragile states.

09:19.46 – 09:21.74

But since the failed mutiny a few months ago,

09:21.74 – 09:23.66

there's been various interviews,

09:23.92 – 09:25.22

various clips of Prigozhin.

09:25.64 – 09:26.96

Many of them are hard to verify,

09:27.18 – 09:30.26

but they show us what Wagner was trying to project

09:30.26 – 09:32.98

about Africa and this continent being

09:32.98 – 09:35.62

increasingly important to them going forward.

09:43.22 – 09:45.54

This video was released by telegram channels

09:45.54 – 09:47.26

linked to Wagner in the last week,

09:47.54 – 09:50.02

and in it, Prigozhin implied he was in Africa,

09:50.02 – 09:53.02

that Wagner was making Russia great around the world

09:53.02 – 09:55.82

and making Africa more free in his words.

09:56.04 – 09:59.38

But of course, that was before this incident this week.

2Speaker 2
09:59.82 – 10:00.86

Yeah, so at this point,

10:00.98 – 10:03.94

what is the likely future of Wagner in Africa,

10:04.14 – 10:06.62

if we know at all, and the potential impact

10:06.62 – 10:08.88

on countries where these private soldiers operate?

3Speaker 3
10:09.50 – 10:11.86

Well, it may have some impact, it's likely to,

10:11.94 – 10:12.94

but it's not clear yet.

10:13.14 – 10:15.12

What we know is that in the last few years,

10:15.46 – 10:17.30

this group has become more powerful

10:17.30 – 10:20.14

in the Central African Republic, in Mali,

10:20.60 – 10:23.30

and then to a lesser extent, maybe Libya and Sudan.

10:23.80 – 10:25.18

In the Central African Republic,

10:25.18 – 10:27.02

they've helped secure the government there,

10:27.40 – 10:29.76

fighting rebel groups, and in exchange,

10:29.88 – 10:32.42

they've taken control of key mineral resources.

10:32.92 – 10:34.60

And rights groups have documented

10:35.74 – 10:39.22

systematic rights abuses and killings by Wagner there.

10:39.64 – 10:41.32

And a government official from CAR recently,

10:41.68 – 10:43.58

he lamented Prigozhin's death,

10:43.86 – 10:46.14

but said their partnership was primarily with Russia.

10:46.14 – 10:49.02

So you can infer that Russia's going to determine

10:49.02 – 10:51.04

if and how things change there.

2Speaker 2
10:51.36 – 10:53.48

Okay, so how important then is the presence

10:53.48 – 10:55.84

of the Wagner group in Africa to Russia?

3Speaker 3
10:56.68 – 10:58.40

Well, you see this particularly

10:58.40 – 11:00.04

in the case of Mali, for example.

11:00.60 – 11:02.30

You know, Mali kicked out French troops

11:02.30 – 11:03.88

that had been there since 2013

11:04.50 – 11:06.18

to fight Islamist insurgency,

11:06.48 – 11:07.80

but they were deeply unpopular,

11:08.10 – 11:10.00

you know, accused of killings too,

11:10.14 – 11:14.38

at a wedding by the UN, which France denied.

11:14.38 – 11:16.84

But when France became isolated from the West,

11:16.94 – 11:19.42

and it relied on Russia and, by extension,

11:19.62 – 11:20.74

Wagner to fill that gap.

11:20.90 – 11:23.18

So Wagner mercenaries help it to exploit

11:23.18 – 11:24.70

the withdrawal of French troops

11:24.70 – 11:26.62

that has happened in Mali, in Burkina Faso,

11:27.18 – 11:28.30

and now, likely, in Niger.

11:29.30 – 11:32.12

And this, by definition, helps Russia expand,

11:32.32 – 11:35.28

try to expand its influence in this part of Africa.
