1Speaker 1
00:00:33.92 – 00:00:40.92

Hey weirdos, I'm Ash and I'm Alayna, and this is morbid in the morning.

2Speaker 2
00:00:53.94 – 00:00:55.82

Haven't done one of those in a while.

1Speaker 1
00:00:55.82 – 00:01:01.50

I know I woke up this morning and I said, Oh, that just made me think of the sopranos.

2Speaker 2
00:01:01.96 – 00:01:03.40

I woke up this morning.

1Speaker 1
00:01:03.40 – 00:01:05.70

It took everything in me not to go almost.

2Speaker 2
00:01:07.92 – 00:01:09.18

You're like, I did it.

1Speaker 1
00:01:09.54 – 00:01:13.08

No, I sure didn't. Not when I did, I got myself a coffee and a bagel.

2Speaker 2
00:01:14.04 – 00:01:16.42

A little different, a little different.

1Speaker 1
00:01:16.76 – 00:01:18.72

I picked up my packed lunch.

2Speaker 2
00:01:22.04 – 00:01:24.00

See, it's morbid in the morning it is.

1Speaker 1
00:01:24.04 – 00:01:28.08

It's called being unhinged. Yeah, could be silly, could be silly for the intro.

2Speaker 2
00:01:28.46 – 00:01:32.36

It's true, and then it's not, and then it's not.

1Speaker 1
00:01:32.46 – 00:01:39.70

And it's simply not silly goose behavior. Well, actually, there is some fucking silly goose behavior in this case. But before we get to it.

2Speaker 2
00:01:40.00 – 00:01:44.68

Interesting, Well before we get to it, you like books, guys?

1Speaker 1
00:01:44.92 – 00:01:49.72

I like books, you like words. I like words. Do you like stories? I'll eat a story up.

00:01:49.84 – 00:01:51.88

Well, guess what, tell me?

2Speaker 2
00:01:51.98 – 00:01:54.86

There's a sequel to The Butcher and the Wren, called The Butcher Game.

1Speaker 1
00:01:54.86 – 00:01:57.78

Holy shit, I don't even know my own author.

2Speaker 2
00:01:58.34 – 00:02:10.92

Holy shit, it's coming out September 17th, but you can pre-order it now anywhere. Pre-order it. And if you pre-order it on Barnes Noble and you use the code BUTCHER25, you can get 25 off.

1Speaker 1
00:02:11.18 – 00:02:16.62

Ooh, I love 25 off, which is great. You should do that. It's like a coupon without a coupon, it's a coupon.

00:02:17.14 – 00:02:17.38

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:02:17.66 – 00:02:19.06

It's a coupon code.

1Speaker 1
00:02:19.36 – 00:02:21.48

Exactly so, do it, it's longer.

2Speaker 2
00:02:21.68 – 00:02:31.48

It's gnarlier, it's good shit goes down in this book. So I think if you liked The Butcher and the Wren, I think you're going to dig it. I think so.

00:02:31.48 – 00:02:33.58

And if you haven't read The Butcher and the Wren yet, you should do that too.

1Speaker 1
00:02:33.88 – 00:02:34.90

Yeah, buy them both.

2Speaker 2
00:02:34.92 – 00:02:37.28

Let's do this, let's go on this journey together, everybody.

1Speaker 1
00:02:37.42 – 00:02:38.00

It's exciting.

2Speaker 2
00:02:38.14 – 00:02:38.86

Come with me.

1Speaker 1
00:02:39.22 – 00:02:39.62

Books?

2Speaker 2
00:02:39.88 – 00:02:40.24

Books?

1Speaker 1
00:02:40.48 – 00:02:48.16

I'm actually very excited for the advanced Reader copies because I happen to be an advanced reader, so and I want to smell it.

2Speaker 2
00:02:48.32 – 00:02:50.60

I can't wait to smell the book, I love smelling the book.

1Speaker 1
00:02:50.60 – 00:02:53.64

They always smell like a book every time. It's true, you guys get it.

2Speaker 2
00:02:54.14 – 00:03:03.36

You guys get it because you guys have been amazing and you've been fucking killing it and super supportive and super kind about it. And I love you guys and you rule.

1Speaker 1
00:03:03.82 – 00:03:07.98

Yay, thank you so much, thank you for supporting me.

2Speaker 2
00:03:08.30 – 00:03:09.50

And keep pre-ordering.

1Speaker 1
00:03:09.72 – 00:03:11.52

I was being you in that moment.

2Speaker 2
00:03:11.72 – 00:03:13.58

Thanks for supporting me, me.

1Speaker 1
00:03:14.04 – 00:03:17.58

I love you guys, love you. Any other good, nasty.

2Speaker 2
00:03:17.70 – 00:03:18.70

That's my plug, plug.

1Speaker 1
00:03:18.70 – 00:03:19.92

I like your plug, plug.

2Speaker 2
00:03:20.04 – 00:03:26.48

No, my only other biz nasty is. The total Solar eclipse was fucking mind changing.

1Speaker 1
00:03:26.72 – 00:03:30.18

I know you got to see it mind bending, like in the path of totality.

2Speaker 2
00:03:30.52 – 00:03:34.48

Yeah, I was in that path of totality and it was fucking gnarly.

1Speaker 1
00:03:34.68 – 00:03:43.36

The videos people took are like, I didn't go outside and see it because I am lazy. I'm just kidding. I had other things going on, I had other things going on.

2Speaker 2
00:03:43.36 – 00:03:46.34

I had other things going on besides the solar eclipse.

00:03:48.84 – 00:03:51.78

But this celestial event not interested.

1Speaker 1
00:03:52.14 – 00:03:55.24

Watched it on TikTok. Very, very zillennial of me.

2Speaker 2
00:03:55.36 – 00:03:56.14

That was very zillennial.

1Speaker 1
00:03:57.06 – 00:03:59.62

But yeah, the fucking videos are insane.

2Speaker 2
00:03:59.74 – 00:04:00.86

And they don't even capture.

00:04:02.52 – 00:04:10.68

In reality, when you're looking at it, I can't imagine it's the first one that we've ever seen. And we were, because John's like a huge space nerd, he loves space.

00:04:11.12 – 00:04:13.30

All the things space this man is all about.

1Speaker 1
00:04:13.38 – 00:04:14.42

He's a space cadet.

2Speaker 2
00:04:14.56 – 00:04:21.92

He is a space cadet, love him. He was so excited and he was hyping this up and I was like he had never seen one either.

00:04:22.04 – 00:04:23.50

But he was hyping it up, just like.

1Speaker 1
00:04:24.08 – 00:04:25.82

Because he was like, I know it's going to be amazing.

2Speaker 2
00:04:26.10 – 00:04:29.82

He was so excited and I was like, I hope this lives up to your hype, dude.

1Speaker 1
00:04:30.42 – 00:04:31.12

And did it like?

2Speaker 2
00:04:31.20 – 00:04:33.04

This is the whole universe that you're hyping up.

1Speaker 1
00:04:33.16 – 00:04:34.54

It, like, surpassed his hype.

2Speaker 2
00:04:35.06 – 00:04:37.66

We were both just like in awe.

1Speaker 1
00:04:37.84 – 00:04:42.68

It's cool that you got to experience that too, like with your little family, yeah, with the kids and everything.

2Speaker 2
00:04:43.46 – 00:04:44.90

Because they were amazed.

1Speaker 1
00:04:45.34 – 00:04:46.36

And like grandma.

2Speaker 2
00:04:46.58 – 00:04:58.62

Yeah, not like nanny, just to clarify, I have a grandma nanny. But yeah, it was amazing and then I saw all these people got engaged during it.

00:04:58.74 – 00:05:05.64

And I saw one last night that the photographer took the photo as the diamond ring phase happened.

1Speaker 1
00:05:06.10 – 00:05:08.50

That is the one that I was telling you about yesterday.

2Speaker 2
00:05:09.18 – 00:05:17.36

Because the diamond ring phase in the solar eclipse is like when it's opening again and you get this burst of light out of one side, and it literally looks like a diamond ring.

1Speaker 1
00:05:17.64 – 00:05:28.84

That was the most beautiful thing I've ever seen. I could not believe that we were talking about it yesterday. I can't imagine how much stress was on that poor photographer and you could tell when she was setting up.

2Speaker 2
00:05:28.92 – 00:05:31.94

She was like, I'm so nervous, I have to get this.

1Speaker 1
00:05:33.24 – 00:05:35.44

Imagine having that be your fucking proposal?

2Speaker 2
00:05:35.62 – 00:05:38.64

And having it be the fucking diamond ring, the diamond ring phase of the solar eclipse.

1Speaker 1
00:05:38.64 – 00:05:44.42

You get one on your finger, and there's one in the galaxy, in the galaxy.

2Speaker 2
00:05:45.54 – 00:05:47.92

Like, the moon was like, Let me help you out.

1Speaker 1
00:05:48.16 – 00:05:53.62

And just like, Damn, you're starting that shit off, right? Yeah, I love it.

2Speaker 2
00:05:53.72 – 00:05:56.86

You're starting it off on a real high bar, high bar.

1Speaker 1
00:05:57.08 – 00:06:01.06

So it's like, you got a lot, it's only up from there.

2Speaker 2
00:06:01.10 – 00:06:02.90

Keep it at that level.

1Speaker 1
00:06:03.52 – 00:06:03.62

Crazy.

2Speaker 2
00:06:04.16 – 00:06:14.26

No, it was really cool if you ever get a chance to see a total solar eclipse in the path of totality. Which, like, I know, it's hard to do, because it happens like every fucking, who knows when.

1Speaker 1
00:06:14.42 – 00:06:16.52

Yeah, I think the next one, I'll be like 50 something.

2Speaker 2
00:06:16.78 – 00:06:19.18

There's like, one in 2026.

00:06:19.20 – 00:06:20.72

But you'd have to go to, like Iceland.

1Speaker 1
00:06:21.44 – 00:06:23.38

I'll go time me up.

2Speaker 2
00:06:23.40 – 00:06:24.64

I was like, alright, threaten me with a good time.

1Speaker 1
00:06:24.64 – 00:06:25.34

How far is Iceland?

2Speaker 2
00:06:25.90 – 00:06:28.30

It's not a bad plane ride from where we are.

1Speaker 1
00:06:28.50 – 00:06:31.84

The fact that I genuinely was just about to say, you could fly there.

2Speaker 2
00:06:32.06 – 00:06:33.60

You could fly there.

1Speaker 1
00:06:33.60 – 00:06:36.50

In fact, it's recommended that you fly there, you can fly anywhere.

2Speaker 2
00:06:37.46 – 00:06:39.96

It's recommended you fly to this island.

1Speaker 1
00:06:40.16 – 00:06:44.58

What a wild question, what a dumb ass thing to say.

2Speaker 2
00:06:44.64 – 00:06:47.08

Instead of trying to traverse the sea.

1Speaker 1
00:06:49.24 – 00:06:53.46

I'm like, there are English channel there, Iceland to Boston.

2Speaker 2
00:06:53.46 – 00:06:57.16

Trying to cross the river with your oxen? I think that instead, you should fly.

1Speaker 1
00:06:57.28 – 00:06:59.98

I don't even have any oxen, so that sounds like a good idea.

2Speaker 2
00:07:01.60 – 00:07:04.86

Flying is a real gamble at this point.

1Speaker 1
00:07:06.08 – 00:07:09.18

Don't you say that to me? I'm literally getting on a flight on Saturday.

2Speaker 2
00:07:09.64 – 00:07:10.92

But you're on an Airbus.

1Speaker 1
00:07:11.16 – 00:07:12.32

Am I? I need to look into that?

2Speaker 2
00:07:12.32 – 00:07:13.50

I hope you didn't check.

1Speaker 1
00:07:13.86 – 00:07:19.78

I told Drew to bitch, I know, check that shit, it's very complicated to check.

2Speaker 2
00:07:19.86 – 00:07:23.72

Boeing had another fuck up. No, they're, like, legitimate.

00:07:25.30 – 00:07:25.96

Something's up.

1Speaker 1
00:07:26.02 – 00:07:31.74

Oh yeah, there's a whole investigation. I don't even think we should talk about it, I don't even think we should talk about it.

2Speaker 2
00:07:32.38 – 00:07:33.58

Make sure you're on an Airbus.

1Speaker 1
00:07:33.76 – 00:07:34.40

I'm going to.

2Speaker 2
00:07:34.66 – 00:07:36.60

I'll fight you guys to be on an Airbus.

1Speaker 1
00:07:37.02 – 00:07:40.70

Do you think I would actually sit my ass on a boeing? I would look before I got on the plane?

2Speaker 2
00:07:40.84 – 00:07:41.36

I was gonna say.

1Speaker 1
00:07:41.46 – 00:07:48.60

I just might do it like, five minutes before baby girl. You gotta do a book, we gotta get a different flight at this very moment on an Airbus.

00:07:50.46 – 00:07:57.04

Hello husband, we on an airbus on Saturday, guys, I'm going to Disney.

2Speaker 2
00:07:57.48 – 00:07:58.36

I'm so excited for her.

00:07:59.88 – 00:08:04.16

You couldn't even say that I am, I'm excited for you.

1Speaker 1
00:08:04.50 – 00:08:12.88

Oh, I can't wait. I love Disney like Holly Madison loves Disney at this point, like I understand the love.

2Speaker 2
00:08:13.04 – 00:08:14.70

And I love it for both of you.

1Speaker 1
00:08:14.78 – 00:08:19.92

I planned the sickest outfits. I'm going to be, Hell, I got a tennis skirt.

2Speaker 2
00:08:19.98 – 00:08:21.32

See you and Holly.

1Speaker 1
00:08:21.60 – 00:08:31.38

I love her style, especially her Disney style. I'm originally from the Aristocats, so I have one outfit that's all Marie themed.

2Speaker 2
00:08:31.74 – 00:08:33.14

I'm obsessed with this.

1Speaker 1
00:08:33.22 – 00:08:36.28

Down to the socks, Wow, fuck me up.

2Speaker 2
00:08:36.56 – 00:08:37.04

Wow.

1Speaker 1
00:08:37.48 – 00:08:43.62

Fuck me up, I love that for you. I even ordered like pink shoes to go with my pink shirt, you know what I'm for that?

00:08:43.70 – 00:08:53.12

Yeah, I'm out here, living. I love hyper fixate, man. Yeah, I can't wait to have kids, get fucking excited and bring them to Disney and make them match me.

00:08:53.34 – 00:08:57.30

Hell yeah, like, for the short amount of time that I'll be able to do that, I can't wait.

2Speaker 2
00:08:57.62 – 00:09:04.74

You know what, just because I don't love the experience of Disney doesn't mean that I can't be like, fuck yeah for other people.

1Speaker 1
00:09:04.88 – 00:09:05.70

You love Disney?

2Speaker 2
00:09:06.60 – 00:09:11.94

Glove Disney, thank you, and someday I hope I can tolerate Disney.

1Speaker 1
00:09:12.10 – 00:09:17.44

You need to go to Disney on the thing that I saw it on TikTok, it was like World Golf Day at Disney.

2Speaker 2
00:09:21.24 – 00:09:24.46

Yeah, I think it's also just I hate amusement parks.

1Speaker 1
00:09:24.46 – 00:09:25.46

Well, you also don't like rides.

2Speaker 2
00:09:26.00 – 00:09:35.52

You don't, yeah, it's just not. I think the whole. It's tough for me to. It's going to be tough for me to enjoy it. It's not your vibe again. The only reason I enjoy it is because the kids do, yeah.

00:09:35.78 – 00:09:36.82

As long as they enjoy it.

1Speaker 1
00:09:37.02 – 00:09:39.14

I can take them anytime you'd like, that's all that matters.

2Speaker 2
00:09:40.06 – 00:09:42.86

I'm just I'll suffer through anything for them.

1Speaker 1
00:09:43.06 – 00:09:43.16

You're like, I'll go.

2Speaker 2
00:09:43.28 – 00:09:44.60

That's true, you will in half.

1Speaker 1
00:09:45.36 – 00:09:46.50

Like, literally anything.

2Speaker 2
00:09:46.70 – 00:09:47.74

So I'm like, all right, let's go.

1Speaker 1
00:09:47.90 – 00:09:49.96

That's really sweet, yeah, I can't wait so.

2Speaker 2
00:09:50.50 – 00:09:51.74

Well, that's fun, let's fucking go.

1Speaker 1
00:09:51.80 – 00:09:53.70

I'm also going to Mario World, so.

2Speaker 2
00:09:53.92 – 00:09:55.30

John was very jealous about that.

1Speaker 1
00:09:55.84 – 00:10:02.14

You guys were going somewhere else and I was like, Oh man, like, I want to go there, and he goes, you're going to Super Mario World.

2Speaker 2
00:10:02.46 – 00:10:03.50

He was like, fuck off.

1Speaker 1
00:10:03.54 – 00:10:04.94

You're going to Super Mario world.

00:10:14.10 – 00:10:18.84

He was like, I'm going to wear a Mario shirt, Mario, All right, I think we've bantered enough.

2Speaker 2
00:10:19.18 – 00:10:25.36

Yeah, I think we're just like, I know this is going to be a tough one. I don't know the details of this, but I know it's going to be a tough one.

1Speaker 1
00:10:25.62 – 00:10:34.72

Yeah, this is definitely a tough one, like, let me get my more serious hat on. Yeah, at the top of it, I will give you like a trigger warning. It has heavy, heavy themes of racism.

00:10:34.98 – 00:10:42.76

This entire case is rooted in racism, and this is the case of the murder of Timothy Coggins, so we'll get into it.

2Speaker 2
00:10:42.76 – 00:10:43.34

Let's go.

1Speaker 1
00:10:43.72 – 00:11:06.82

And I just want to say at the start, I would have been Timothy's friend, like, and you're going to feel that way too. He just seemed like I feel like he would have been all of our friend, and he just seemed like a friendly. Like, just someone you would want in your friend group. And the fact that what happened to him did just because people are disgusting, like, really pisses me off.

2Speaker 2
00:11:06.88 – 00:11:07.80

Yeah, absolutely.

1Speaker 1
00:11:08.04 – 00:11:20.30

And it's just gross. So, Timothy Wayne Coggins was born in Georgia on August 29th, 1960. He was the fourth of eight children born to Viola Coggins Dorsey, which Viola loved.

2Speaker 2
00:11:21.10 – 00:11:25.70

It immediately makes me think of Viola Davis. Yes, same, which is like a very good association.

1Speaker 1
00:11:26.26 – 00:11:40.14

100. The family didn't have a lot when it came to income or resources, but they were really a tight knit family and they were all completely supportive of one another. So where they weren't rich in like money and assets, they were rich in like love for each other.

2Speaker 2
00:11:40.30 – 00:11:41.82

Yeah, honestly, where it counts.

1Speaker 1
00:11:42.30 – 00:11:59.22

Exactly, and despite an already full house, Viola and Tim's stepfather, Robert constantly regularly entertained nieces, nephews, friends, they were. That house you could always go to if you didn't have a place to go, I love that, or just if you needed some support in a place that felt like home.

00:11:59.76 – 00:12:04.84

Tim's niece, Heather, said They didn't come from much, but they came from love and that taught them to love each other.

2Speaker 2
00:12:04.84 – 00:12:05.56

Aw.

1Speaker 1
00:12:06.02 – 00:12:32.16

Now, despite their limited means, Viola and Robert worked really hard to instill strong values and a good work ethic in all of their kids. But most of all, they stressed. And I'm sure you can already tell the importance of family connection. Tim and his younger sister Talisa were only two years apart, so they grew up with a really, really close bond. Talisa described Tim, saying He was funny and outgoing. Tim was a man with an irresistible smile who never met a stranger.

00:12:32.92 – 00:12:35.32

Like, I love the way she put that.

2Speaker 2
00:12:35.40 – 00:12:38.72

Like he never met a stranger, never met a stranger, like they were friends immediately. I love that.

1Speaker 1
00:12:38.92 – 00:12:58.44

And he was also really, really protective of his friends and family, especially very protective over his four sisters and his mother. Like, you were not going to do anything to hurt them if Tim was around. And whenever one of his sisters was going to a friend's house, he would insist on walking them there and back, just to make sure they got there and home with no trouble.

2Speaker 2
00:12:58.56 – 00:12:58.90

Aw.

1Speaker 1
00:12:58.90 – 00:13:11.58

Likewise, he was always affectionate with his mother and he went out of his way to help her. Heather Coggins, his niece, said There was nothing my grandmother could ask him to do that he wouldn't do. If she asked him to walk to Atlanta and pick up a croissant, he'd do it.

2Speaker 2
00:13:12.02 – 00:13:13.12

See, he's just a good man.

1Speaker 1
00:13:13.26 – 00:13:32.24

He's a good man. What friends and family remember most, though, was Tim's passion for music. In the early 1980s, the remnants of the disco and the funk era were still really popular on the radio. And Tim loved going out to the club on the weekend just to spend the weekend dancing. Hell yeah, like, loved, loved dancing, loved music.

00:13:32.80 – 00:13:42.48

One of his aunts remembered He'd just dance anywhere, he'd dance in the street. Oh, I love that. He had his dancing shoes on all the time. Dancing in the street. It's Tim.

00:13:42.66 – 00:14:08.78

I love that now. In 1983, Spaulding County was one of the more rural parts of the Atlanta metro area, although it was actually the largest city in the county. Griffin was equally rural because the town was so small. The People's Choice Club, a small dance club in the almost exclusively black part of Griffin, was the hottest place to be on a Friday night. Especially if you wanted to dance, especially if you wanted to hear some music, hell yeah.

00:14:08.84 – 00:14:09.76

This was the place to go.

2Speaker 2
00:14:10.42 – 00:14:11.90

I love people who love to dance.

1Speaker 1
00:14:12.20 – 00:14:12.58

Hell yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:14:12.74 – 00:14:16.92

I feel like it's just like, that's a very specific kind of person. They're always awesome.

1Speaker 1
00:14:19.70 – 00:14:37.54

Now, on the night of October 7th, Tim caught a ride with a friend to the People's Choice Club, where he was going to meet up with Ruth. Mickey Guy. She was a local white woman who he had started dating a few weeks earlier, according to a journalist, Wesley Lowery. Even in the 1980s, interracial dating was frowned upon in Spaulding.

2Speaker 2
00:14:37.76 – 00:14:39.72

Which is so wild, it's insane.

1Speaker 1
00:14:39.96 – 00:14:47.78

To think about that, and it's about to get even more wild. This is still his quote, where local clan chapters still held regular rallies and parades.

2Speaker 2
00:14:48.42 – 00:14:54.22

That feels like it should be a different planet. It does, doesn't it? It just doesn't feel...

1Speaker 1
00:14:54.78 – 00:14:56.54

Honestly, at this point, I'm like, Yeah, that's Earth.

2Speaker 2
00:14:57.06 – 00:15:04.64

No, absolutely, you know what I mean now? Unfortunately, I feel like everything has flipped on its head way too much.

1Speaker 1
00:15:04.88 – 00:15:05.32

Very much so.

2Speaker 2
00:15:05.32 – 00:15:08.36

I feel like the wheels turn backwards way too quickly.

1Speaker 1
00:15:08.50 – 00:15:10.52

But it should be somewhere else.

2Speaker 2
00:15:10.70 – 00:15:25.40

But it just feels like you look around and you're like, it doesn't belong on this planet, this belongs on a less advanced planet. A less advanced society. Should be doing this kind of shit, it's so true and thinking this kind of way.

1Speaker 1
00:15:25.56 – 00:15:39.76

It's just sad to think that Black people living in this area were just subject to seeing parades go by full of white people. That wanted to do the most disgusting, horrific things to them and literally don't see them as human.

2Speaker 2
00:15:39.82 – 00:15:41.60

And they had to just go about their lives.

1Speaker 1
00:15:41.68 – 00:15:43.70

And just live and share the same spaces.

2Speaker 2
00:15:43.70 – 00:16:00.82

And it's probably one of the very big reasons why Timothy was so adamant about walking his sister's places and walking his mother places. 100. Like putting himself in harm's way. Yeah, to make sure they're safe, because they're not safe.

1Speaker 1
00:16:00.92 – 00:16:03.14

Exactly, I think that's exactly what it was.

2Speaker 2
00:16:03.14 – 00:16:09.14

It's right out loud, that's the other thing, It's like they're saying the quiet parts out loud, they're just not even hiding it.

1Speaker 1
00:16:09.30 – 00:16:09.74

Exactly.

2Speaker 2
00:16:09.74 – 00:16:10.72

It's so gross.

1Speaker 1
00:16:11.22 – 00:16:29.88

And this was very much an area like this county was very much an area where it was pretty segregated. Like there were black parts of town and there were white parts of town. And I'm sure they intersected at certain points. And that must have been just so fear inducing for a Black person to have to go in a quote unquote white area.

00:16:30.08 – 00:16:37.02

Yeah, and to think that this like this was the 1980s, yeah, this was not like 19, No.

00:16:37.20 – 00:16:39.58

Like, 1919 or something like that.

2Speaker 2
00:16:39.58 – 00:16:47.76

Like, you know the 1930s or something where you're like, Still, you know where you're like, damn, even then you're like, damn. We should have advanced further than that.

1Speaker 1
00:16:47.78 – 00:16:52.00

But this is the 1980s, like, I know people that were alive during this time, yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:16:52.02 – 00:17:07.88

You were almost alive. And it's like, when I hear these kind of stories and like things like this, it's like you. And I say this a lot. But I can't imagine looking at a kid and filling them with that kind of hatred for another person.

1Speaker 1
00:17:08.30 – 00:17:09.24

But that's what people do.

2Speaker 2
00:17:09.42 – 00:17:10.36

For no fucking reason.

1Speaker 1
00:17:10.56 – 00:17:11.42

That's what people do.

2Speaker 2
00:17:11.44 – 00:17:12.74

Except for what they look like.

1Speaker 1
00:17:12.84 – 00:17:13.52

And it's so scary.

2Speaker 2
00:17:13.52 – 00:17:19.86

Like, I couldn't imagine looking at the girls and being like, let me teach you to hate somebody based solely on appearances.

1Speaker 1
00:17:20.28 – 00:17:31.90

Or at all? That's the scariest thing is you like, you hit the nail on the head there because you think about it. And these people in this area had been taught from probably the time before they could even speak to hate.

2Speaker 2
00:17:32.18 – 00:17:32.66

Just to hate.

1Speaker 1
00:17:32.82 – 00:17:36.36

Just to hate because of literally the color of someone's skin.

2Speaker 2
00:17:37.18 – 00:17:40.16

And it's just, and again, kids are so open, they're so.

1Speaker 1
00:17:40.46 – 00:17:40.94

Impressionable.

2Speaker 2
00:17:41.06 – 00:17:51.40

And they're so like, they come out sure, ready to accept whatever, ready to just make friends and be kind and be they do.

00:17:51.56 – 00:17:56.50

They just come out that way, we teach them things nine times out of ten, they come out that way, we teach them this shit.

1Speaker 1
00:17:56.70 – 00:17:56.90

Yep.

2Speaker 2
00:17:57.06 – 00:18:12.48

And you teach them that shit real early, and it's like, I don't. I just can't fathom looking at an in it like a very open minded, just untainted child and just tainting them with adult hate, like, I just can't.

1Speaker 1
00:18:12.48 – 00:18:16.16

It's good that we can't fathom it, because I can't either, obviously.

2Speaker 2
00:18:16.76 – 00:18:17.90

I just so sad.

1Speaker 1
00:18:18.40 – 00:18:24.70

I don't know what headspace that you have to be in to, and honestly, I think you have you had to have been raised with hate.

2Speaker 2
00:18:25.08 – 00:18:29.28

Yeah, like, Oh, if you're teaching that, yeah, it's a cycle, it is for sure, and it's, I mean.

00:18:29.88 – 00:18:33.10

But it's like, where does it start? It's got to start somewhere, and it's like, what the fuck?

1Speaker 1
00:18:33.40 – 00:18:37.94

The bigger question is, where the fuck does it end? Yeah, absolutely. Are we done yet?

2Speaker 2
00:18:38.00 – 00:18:39.00

Yeah, how do you break that?

1Speaker 1
00:18:39.06 – 00:18:41.14

Like, it's it's bad, it's still bad.

2Speaker 2
00:18:41.14 – 00:18:54.98

But you do see these people who are, they come from a long line of this shit, and they're taught that from a young age. And luckily, they were able to. Which, which must be difficult if you're, if you're, like, you know, so indoctrinated to think that way.

1Speaker 1
00:18:55.12 – 00:18:56.34

Yeah, to break that cycle.

2Speaker 2
00:18:56.62 – 00:19:12.74

Some people are able to break free of. Just like the indoctrination of thinking that way. And be like, wait a second and start thinking critically about it. And be like, What the fuck am I doing? Like, you know, like, what am I? What are these thoughts that have been put in my head? Yeah, and they end up like going the totally different way.

1Speaker 1
00:19:12.80 – 00:19:13.68

But it's so rare.

2Speaker 2
00:19:13.96 – 00:19:16.04

It is, and it's. It's so sad.

1Speaker 1
00:19:16.20 – 00:19:19.66

Overall, it's just really sad and really scary, it's just dumb, it sucks.

2Speaker 2
00:19:29.74 – 00:19:35.84

I'm Dan Taberski. In 2011, something strange began to happen at the high school in Leroy, New York.

1Speaker 1
00:19:35.84 – 00:19:42.28

I was like at my locker and she came up to me and she was like, stuttering, super bad. I'm like, stop around. She's like, I can't.

2Speaker 2
00:19:42.56 – 00:19:45.84

A mystery illness, bizarre symptoms and spreading fast.

1Speaker 1
00:19:45.98 – 00:19:48.22

Like doubling and tripling, and it's all these girls.

2Speaker 2
00:19:48.38 – 00:19:56.10

With a diagnosis, the state tried to keep on the down low. Everybody thought I was holding something back. Well, you were holding something back intentionally. Yeah, well, yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:19:57.68 – 00:20:02.14

It's hysteria, it's all in your head, it's not physical. Oh my gosh, you're exaggerating.

2Speaker 2
00:20:02.14 – 00:20:10.46

Is this the largest mass hysteria since the Witches of Salem, or is it something else entirely? Something's wrong here, something's not right.

1Speaker 1
00:20:10.72 – 00:20:13.66

Leroy was the new dateline and everyone was trying to solve the murder.

2Speaker 2
00:20:14.22 – 00:20:28.14

He then began to prey on vulnerable women, instead selling the idea of a future together while stealing from them behind their backs. To the infamous scams of Real Housewives stars like Teresa Giudice, what should have proven to be a major downfall only seemed to solidify her place in the Real Housewives Hall of Fame. 00:21:32.82 – 00:21:50.08

So back to the People's Choice Club that night. And a lot of friends had pointed out that Tim's relationship with Mickey might not be the best idea in rural Spalding County. But their warnings did little to sway Tim. He wasn't going to be pushed around by a bunch of racist people telling him who he could and couldn't date.

2Speaker 2
00:21:50.10 – 00:21:52.12

And they like each other, they should be able to like each other.

1Speaker 1
00:21:52.24 – 00:21:56.24

They should absolutely be able to like each other, it doesn't fucking affect anybody else.

2Speaker 2
00:21:56.46 – 00:21:57.92

No, who gives a shit, that's the thing.

1Speaker 1
00:21:57.98 – 00:21:59.46

You don't like it, look the other way.

2Speaker 2
00:21:59.54 – 00:22:01.78

Everybody mind your fucking business.

1Speaker 1
00:22:01.96 – 00:22:03.88

Exactly, and that's what it really comes down to.

2Speaker 2
00:22:03.88 – 00:22:12.44

Even in 2024, that is still true. Everyone mind your fucking business. God damn, it's true. It's just like, if it's not affecting you, who gives a shit?

1Speaker 1
00:22:12.52 – 00:22:31.10

And I think, honestly, I remember my mom telling me when I was little like. I've said so many things about my mom. But this is actually like a good thing that she taught me. I'm like, don't worry, it's positive. I remember like, I would come home and be like, this person is driving me fucking crazy. I wouldn't say fucking. But I'd be like, this person is driving me nuts. And she'd be like, you need to like.

00:22:31.10 – 00:22:39.08

Ask yourself in the moment, is that really affecting you? Yeah, like, does that behavior genuinely affect you? And if it doesn't, let it go?

2Speaker 2
00:22:39.20 – 00:22:40.90

Yeah, then shut up and move on.

1Speaker 1
00:22:41.06 – 00:22:49.86

And I apply that to like so much of my life. Like, if I'm like, getting annoyed by something, I'm like, but is that really affecting me? Like, outside of it, just like annoying me?

2Speaker 2
00:22:49.88 – 00:22:51.20

Or am I just choosing to let it?

1Speaker 1
00:22:51.22 – 00:22:53.06

Or am I choosing to be annoyed exactly?

2Speaker 2
00:22:53.10 – 00:22:54.48

To, like, draw myself into it.

1Speaker 1
00:22:54.50 – 00:23:06.08

Right, and I think more and more people need to look at situations and behaviors like that. Yeah, like, is it? Is it really affecting my life in any fucking way other than I'm annoyed by it?

2Speaker 2
00:23:06.32 – 00:23:11.90

Unfortunately, social media has kind of gotten out of control at this point.

1Speaker 1
00:23:12.08 – 00:23:14.30

Because people can say whatever the fuck they want to say.

2Speaker 2
00:23:14.30 – 00:23:23.10

And everybody, and I feel like it's just like it's ramped up too much now, and it's like, and it's not. And it's not just racism, it's all, you know, it's bullying, it's harassment.

00:23:23.10 – 00:23:30.20

But everybody's just allowed to have their fucking two cents on everybody's business.

1Speaker 1
00:23:30.56 – 00:23:43.46

And you can say something that you would never in a million years look at someone and say, and that's another thing. When you're sitting there typing out a fucking comment, ask yours, like a crazy ass comment, ask yourself, Would I say this to somebody's face?

2Speaker 2
00:23:43.76 – 00:24:05.68

Who was? who did I see say this? I think I'm going to have to figure out who the comedian was. It's a girl on TikTok, but she was saying that, like when somebody says a mean thing online to her. She was like, I picture them like having to stand in front of everyone they've ever respected or loved.

00:24:05.84 – 00:24:17.84

Like their mother, their sister, their best friends, their dad, their grandfather, their grandmother, all the people that they respect. And them saying that same comment to me while I stand there.

1Speaker 1
00:24:17.94 – 00:24:18.38

In front of all those people.

2Speaker 2
00:24:18.38 – 00:24:22.62

And then having to just look at all those people and be like, Yep, I said that.

1Speaker 1
00:24:22.62 – 00:24:24.70

I know exactly who you're talking about, I can't think of her name.

2Speaker 2
00:24:24.88 – 00:24:25.00

Erin.

1Speaker 1
00:24:25.84 – 00:24:27.64

Erin, You're right, Erin, hold on.

2Speaker 2
00:24:27.78 – 00:24:31.44

Yeah, because I want to give her credit because it was such a good. I think it begins with an H hat.

1Speaker 1
00:24:31.60 – 00:24:33.74

I know exactly I can literally see her face.

2Speaker 2
00:24:33.84 – 00:24:40.52

She's a wonderful girl, she's very, very, very funny and she has very, very good like insights onto these little things.

1Speaker 1
00:24:40.52 – 00:24:43.06

Erin, I'm sorry if I say your last name wrong, Hattemer.

2Speaker 2
00:24:43.32 – 00:24:58.66

Yes, Hattemer, I almost said, Hattemer, but I didn't want to botch it. But yeah, and I think that's such a great way to think about it. So, I mean, that goes the other way, too. If somebody's being mean to you, yeah. Because I think a lot of people have dealt with, like, you know, assholes strangers on the internet.

00:24:59.34 – 00:25:07.92

Just think about it that way, if it's bothering. You. Just picture them having to say it in front of everyone they've ever loved or respected, and it'll make you be like, that was a dumb thing for that person to say.

1Speaker 1
00:25:07.96 – 00:25:09.02

Yeah, it's so true.

2Speaker 2
00:25:10.52 – 00:25:19.40

Because, like at this point in this story, it's like, these people need to mind their business. They do, you know, let two people care, they're two consenting adults.

00:25:19.54 – 00:25:20.52

Let them care about each other.

1Speaker 1
00:25:20.64 – 00:25:24.72

And obviously, like this story, it's like it's so much bigger than people just being assholes.

2Speaker 2
00:25:25.08 – 00:25:25.48

Absolutely.

1Speaker 1
00:25:26.02 – 00:25:27.32

There's not even words for what these people are.

2Speaker 2
00:25:27.32 – 00:25:29.66

This gets taken into the stratosphere.

1Speaker 1
00:25:29.78 – 00:25:45.04

Like a nightmare, nightmare territory, but anyway, most weekend nights at the People's Club. Tim could be found, I'm sure you can guess, at the center of that dance floor, where his energy and charm just shone. But that night, Tim seemed very distracted.

00:25:45.38 – 00:26:07.38

Almost from the moment he arrived there, and later his sister Talissa, would remember making her way to the bathroom and hearing somebody else at the club say. And this is a quote. There were white men outside asking for Tim. Now, in and of itself, in this county, that was a terrifying thing to hear that there were white men looking for your black brother. Like, I can't imagine how she felt hearing that.

00:26:07.82 – 00:26:19.68

And then she caught a glimpse of Tim headed for the front door of the club. Oh boy. Not only did she hear that most terrifying thing that you could possibly hear in that moment, but then sees him. But then she's like, Oh, this is true.

00:26:19.88 – 00:26:32.68

Like, I think he's headed out there, oh boy. So she followed after him to make sure that he was okay, but by the time she reached the parking lot, he was gone. And she had no way of knowing that was the last time she was ever going to see her brother alive.

2Speaker 2
00:26:33.34 – 00:26:33.54

Oh.

1Speaker 1
00:26:33.98 – 00:26:48.26

The next day, no one in the Coggins house actually really thought much of the fact that Tim hadn't come home the night before, Lowery wrote. It was typical for him to disappear for a few days at a time. He knew everyone around town, so the safe assumption was that he was crashing on someone's couch.

00:26:48.46 – 00:26:53.00

Which you're in your early 20s, of course. Like you have a night out, you spend the night at your friend's house, you come home sometime later.

2Speaker 2
00:26:53.00 – 00:26:57.02

And if you know everybody around town, it's like, Yeah, you got a ton of places to stay.

1Speaker 1
00:26:57.16 – 00:27:34.48

Right? But Tim was not crashing on anybody's couch the next day, two days after Tim had gone out to meet Mickey at the club. Sheriff's deputies were trying to identify a man in his early 20s whose badly beaten body had been found in a field not very far away from the People's Choice Club. Operating, apparently, without any sensitivity for the potential friends and family of this victim. The photo that deputies were circulating was of a brutalized Black man in his early 20s. His face was beaten so badly that he was essentially unrecognizable. But they were going around saying, like, Do you know who this is?

00:27:34.60 – 00:27:35.76

Showing people that photo.

2Speaker 2
00:27:36.06 – 00:27:37.18

What the fuck?

1Speaker 1
00:27:37.72 – 00:27:40.10

Like, I don't understand.

00:27:41.70 – 00:28:02.76

It was a patron, though, at the People's Choice, who thought they recognized the man as Tim Coggins and suggested the officer, Oscar Jordan, check with the Coggins family. So when Jordan showed the photo to Viola, she broke down crying. But Talisa insisted she didn't recognize the man in that photo. She had no idea who it was. I think it was very much a trauma response.

2Speaker 2
00:28:02.82 – 00:28:06.06

I was just going to say, Why would you ever?

00:28:06.06 – 00:28:12.04

No part of you is going to click as like, this could be someone I love, no, and your brain is going to try to protect you from that.

1Speaker 1
00:28:12.22 – 00:28:22.20

Absolutely. It was only later that she told a reporter she didn't want to admit what she knew immediately. It was Tim, but her immediate trauma response is No, that's not my brother, no way.

00:28:22.38 – 00:28:22.50

No.

2Speaker 2
00:28:22.50 – 00:28:27.04

Yeah, I don't blame her, because that's absolutely your brain trying to protect yourself.

1Speaker 1
00:28:27.14 – 00:28:30.38

And that family never should have seen that photo.

2Speaker 2
00:28:30.62 – 00:28:30.86

No.

1Speaker 1
00:28:31.06 – 00:28:38.18

Like, that never should have been their last vision of their loved one.

2Speaker 2
00:28:38.20 – 00:28:39.04

No, of course not.

1Speaker 1
00:28:39.34 – 00:29:01.36

It's awful. But on the morning of October 8th, Tim's body was discovered by a father and son who were out squirrel hunting on the outer edge of an airfield in Griffin. The autopsy had yet to be performed, but from what the sheriff's department could tell. And I just want to let you know, this is a lot like, this is very graphic. Tim had dozens of knife wounds in the back, torso, wrist and neck.

00:29:01.68 – 00:29:18.36

When he was discovered, his shirt, socks and shoes were missing, his jeans were pulled down below his knees, and the police found his bloodstained sweater a few yards away. Based on the abrasions on his body and the drag marks and patterns in the dirt, they believed that he had been dragged behind a vehicle.

2Speaker 2
00:29:18.68 – 00:29:18.88

Oh.

1Speaker 1
00:29:18.88 – 00:29:21.48

Like this is.

2Speaker 2
00:29:21.48 – 00:29:22.36

That's.

00:29:22.36 – 00:29:23.58

That's animal behavior.

1Speaker 1
00:29:23.66 – 00:29:24.58

It's animal behavior.

2Speaker 2
00:29:24.60 – 00:29:27.94

That's worse than animal behavior, I don't know how animals don't do this.

1Speaker 1
00:29:28.02 – 00:29:41.82

I don't know how you can do anything like to hurt another person physically. I don't understand that headspace. Thankfully, I don't know how you do this. This is not just hurting a person, this is beyond....

00:29:41.82 – 00:29:43.32

I don't know how you would do this to an animal.

2Speaker 2
00:29:43.54 – 00:29:44.10

Doing this.

00:29:44.10 – 00:29:44.74

That's the thing.

00:29:48.88 – 00:29:54.88

Throw it away and throw away the key like you're beyond any kind of fixing.

1Speaker 1
00:29:55.94 – 00:29:59.26

Rehabilitation or anything, any kind of anything, if you're capable of this, I don't know.

2Speaker 2
00:29:59.38 – 00:30:00.14

That's the depth.

1Speaker 1
00:30:01.16 – 00:30:02.04

It's heinous.

2Speaker 2
00:30:02.16 – 00:30:02.90

The true depth.

1Speaker 1
00:30:03.34 – 00:30:16.10

Georgia Bureau of Investigation GBI agent Jared Coleman said it appeared he had been chained to the back of a truck. That truck then drug him. Feet first around in a square pattern, and there were sites of blood at each corner.

2Speaker 2
00:30:17.08 – 00:30:17.94

So this?

1Speaker 1
00:30:18.88 – 00:30:19.96

You dragged him around and around.

2Speaker 2
00:30:20.32 – 00:30:21.86

No i.

1Speaker 1
00:30:21.86 – 00:30:25.48

And this all comes down to him dating a white woman.

2Speaker 2
00:30:26.64 – 00:30:28.68

And we've heard stories like this before.

1Speaker 1
00:30:28.68 – 00:30:29.46

We absolutely have.

2Speaker 2
00:30:29.48 – 00:30:40.48

Which is like, this isn't a one-off by any stretch of the imagination. No, and that's something everybody should. That's just like....

1Speaker 1
00:30:40.48 – 00:30:46.88

It's unfathomable. It comes down to who he decided to date, who he liked and who liked him.

2Speaker 2
00:30:46.98 – 00:30:48.28

I was going to say, And who liked him back?

1Speaker 1
00:30:48.88 – 00:30:58.20

He was harassing this girl. She met up with him at the club, She was having a good time with him, They liked each other. That's not your fucking business.

00:30:58.68 – 00:31:13.28

And it doesn't concern you in any way to take it upon yourself to do anything to hurt someone. But then to do this because of their choice of who they want to be romantically involved in. What the fuck is wrong with you? Look inward.

2Speaker 2
00:31:13.78 – 00:31:15.06

Yeah, I mean, yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:31:15.36 – 00:31:15.92

Look inward.

2Speaker 2
00:31:18.88 – 00:31:21.94

Forever, forever, and don't join society ever again.

1Speaker 1
00:31:22.22 – 00:31:38.08

The sad part is, and I'll tell you right from the top, these people got to stay in society for a really long time. Before any justice was served in this story, awesome, before any justice whatsoever. But a few days later, and I told you from the top, this is a heavy one.

2Speaker 2
00:31:38.08 – 00:31:38.26

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:31:38.90 – 00:32:17.62

A few days later, the autopsy confirmed what the sheriff's officers already assumed, and, unfortunately, unveiled several other horrible details. It was very difficult to tell the order in which Tim's wounds had been inflicted, but the medical examiner believed that he had been knocked to the ground and stabbed seven times in the chest in what appeared to be a kind of star pattern, and there were two intersecting slashes on his chest and back. About 11 inches like it went 11 inches in what formed a large X, which I'm sure, you know why? In addition to the chest wounds, the tendon behind one of his knees was severed, and that was with an additional stab.

00:32:17.90 – 00:32:35.92

Oh, and then he was dragged behind a vehicle. For they don't know how long, an indeterminable amount of time. But evidence at the scene suggested there was a square pattern around the lot. So it was over and over, like it wasn't just for a short period of time, it was prolonged.

2Speaker 2
00:32:36.62 – 00:32:37.26

Holy shit.

1Speaker 1
00:32:37.56 – 00:33:05.44

Finally, his attackers dragged him further into the field and he was hit over the head with a large, heavy object that they believed could have been a wooden chair or a table leg. And then his body was dragged even further. And this is gross to the base of a tree that locals referred to as the hanging tree. And he was left there to die. What the fuck? The medical examiner determined that the cause of death had been from the stab wounds, but....

2Speaker 2
00:33:05.44 – 00:33:06.84

They don't know what order that all happened in.

1Speaker 1
00:33:06.84 – 00:33:11.30

They don't know what order. And this was not. He was tortured.

2Speaker 2
00:33:11.54 – 00:33:12.02

Absolutely.

1Speaker 1
00:33:15.40 – 00:33:27.96

These people could have stopped their actions at any point in time, and only continued and progressed to do worse and worse things to this human being.

2Speaker 2
00:33:28.12 – 00:33:37.92

The fact that you're telling me that these people, and obviously it's several people, that these people were walking around in society after this for a long time.

1Speaker 1
00:33:38.08 – 00:33:39.80

Years, years and years and years.

2Speaker 2
00:33:39.80 – 00:33:46.42

And interacting with other people, and probably being around children, and being around humans, and being alone with people.

1Speaker 1
00:33:46.66 – 00:33:53.72

Not only that, let me even up that telling people what they did, telling people about this. Are you boasting about it?

2Speaker 2
00:33:54.80 – 00:34:10.32

For years. Sometimes it's really base level to be a human being. Sometimes when you hear shit like this, you're like, this sucks. It sucks to be in the same kind of species as these people. It's like, damn.

1Speaker 1
00:34:10.32 – 00:34:13.10

Because we're the only species that will do this to each other.

2Speaker 2
00:34:13.10 – 00:34:17.60

That's the thing. Sometimes it's real gross to be the same species.

1Speaker 1
00:34:17.60 – 00:34:32.02

It's beyond words. I've had this one done for a little bit and have been getting into the headspace to actually do this case justice and present it well.

2Speaker 2
00:34:32.16 – 00:34:32.56

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:34:33.10 – 00:34:45.40

This is gnarly, I keep saying, there's just not words for what. This is the fact that this is true. This happened, and like you said earlier, this is not the first time it's happened.

2Speaker 2
00:34:45.62 – 00:34:45.84

No.

1Speaker 1
00:34:46.12 – 00:34:56.78

Not the last time it happened. No, absolutely not this shit, similar shit like this happens right now, right now, in the times that we live in.

00:34:58.44 – 00:34:59.40

It's beyond.

2Speaker 2
00:35:00.00 – 00:35:00.30

Yeah.

00:35:01.90 – 00:35:04.48

This is tough, it is.

1Speaker 1
00:35:04.54 – 00:35:10.96

It's tough. I think it's an important story to tell. Absolutely, it is Tim's story. People should know who he was.

00:35:11.22 – 00:35:11.66

Absolutely.

2Speaker 2
00:35:12.04 – 00:35:15.76

I mean, there's people that still walk around and are like, racism is fake.

00:35:17.84 – 00:35:22.66

I've heard people act that way. It needs to be like, no, no.

1Speaker 1
00:35:23.16 – 00:35:37.36

Sit down, let me tell you a story. Exactly now. Like I said, at the time of the murder, Griffin was a still somewhat, and I don't even know what. It's segregated, it's barely somewhat Black people living on one side and white residents living on the other.

00:35:38.10 – 00:36:00.82

HEATHER COGGINS And again, that's Tim's niece. We're called, you would see homes with the Confederate flag. But we live on our side of the tracks, they live on their side of the tracks. And you don't intermingle if you don't have to. So that being the case, Sheriff Butch Freeman knew the Black community most likely wasn't going to cooperate with a mostly white sheriff's department, especially with a clearly racially motivated crime. So he assigned one of the department's.

00:36:05.08 – 00:36:44.40

Chief Investigators Oscar Jordan who tries so hard in this case and in this investigation? And when you hear what happens when he starts actually gaining traction, you're going to want to toss your microphone across the room. I just want to warn you now. From the moment Tim's body was discovered, Jordan knew this was going to be a tough case to crack. Because, aside from the tire tracks and the drag marks found at the scene, the only other evidence investigators found was an empty bottle of Jack Daniels. And a large, broken table leg with black electrical tape wrapped around one end, Jordan assumed that the table leg obviously was the blunt object used to crush Tim's skull.

2Speaker 2
00:36:44.68 – 00:36:46.60

Yeah, it's almost like they formed it into a bat.

1Speaker 1
00:36:47.10 – 00:36:48.40

Exactly actually exactly.

2Speaker 2
00:36:48.68 – 00:36:49.74

With the electrical tape.

1Speaker 1
00:36:49.80 – 00:36:59.96

Yep, but with no other evidence, they believe that the killer must have taken the knife. That they used to do everything they did to tim with them when they left the scene. And in the absence of the additional.

00:37:03.98 – 00:37:25.84

Evidence investigators returned where Tim had last been seen dancing at the People's Choice with a white woman on the night he was murdered. And he found out that Talisa had seen Tim leave the club and meet two white men outside. But unfortunately, while several people knew that Tim had recently started dating a white girl and actually had even seen her at the club with him, no one knew her name, like nobody that he was talking to.

00:37:33.98 – 00:38:00.16

Was on the street from the club, but nobody got a good enough look at the men to identify them. So the Coggins family just didn't have the information to help guide Jordan's investigation, but they did have one piece of information that proved useful, according to Tim's aunt, there was a story going around that two local white guys had given Tim and his friend Danny $600 to buy marijuana, but Tim and Danny had taken the money and never returned with the drugs.

00:38:03.98 – 00:38:31.68

When Tim was murdered, Danny was killed, his friend and what everybody assumed was an accident. But in light of Tim's death, Jordan started to suspect that maybe both had been murdered. In this kind of drug deal gone bad scenario, which I guess to a degree you can understand, like how this was a drug deal gone wrong. But the way in which he was killed goes so far beyond that. There's hate involved here. It's clear that this is not simply.

2Speaker 2
00:38:34.04 – 00:38:38.32

Jordan following that lead. Because obviously, you can't just ignore that.

1Speaker 1
00:38:39.06 – 00:38:40.18

And you don't have anything else.

2Speaker 2
00:38:40.28 – 00:38:41.70

That's the thing, so I understand that.

1Speaker 1
00:38:41.82 – 00:38:43.88

But there's hate here.

2Speaker 2
00:38:44.26 – 00:38:45.48

There's hate and rage.

1Speaker 1
00:38:45.48 – 00:38:53.30

And animalistic behavior. I just want to make sure that it doesn't get lost in a drug deal gone bad kind of thing because spoiler alert.

2Speaker 2
00:38:53.36 – 00:38:54.74

That's not what it is, that's not what it is.

1Speaker 1
00:39:04.98 – 00:39:34.86

He didn't really get more information on the supposed $600 weed deal, but he did hear another rumor that piqued his interest. Someone told Jordan that Sandra Bunn, a local white woman living in Cary's Park, had been bragging to her neighbors about Tim's murder. What the fuck? And she's not the only person that was around town. Bragging about this murder, bragging about having information, about knowing who did it, the people who did it were bragging about having done it.

2Speaker 2
00:39:34.98 – 00:39:40.92

Imagine bragging about being like a fucking lizard person? no, who? just like, imagine being that. No, I actually won't.

00:39:41.88 – 00:39:42.36

Disgusting.

1Speaker 1
00:39:43.96 – 00:39:56.44

No return to the ooze where you belong, that's exactly where these people belong. This case, like, elicits so much anger, so much anger, and just like some of them, I can't.

00:39:56.96 – 00:40:13.18

But she says, yes, she's bragging about Tim's murder, so in question. She told Jordan that on the night of the murder, she'd seen Tim in the trailer park with her brother, Frank Gebhardt and his girlfriend. MicKEy Guy Okay, I don't know if you remember Mickey guy, that's who Tim was dating.

00:40:13.42 – 00:40:17.30

Yeah, she had a boyfriend, okay, a white boyfriend. Frank Gerhardt, Okay.

00:40:17.42 – 00:40:40.38

And another friend named Bill Moore. The group had been having an argument outside of Frank's house before Tim Frank and Bill Moore got into Frank's car and drove out of the park in the direction of the quote-unquote hanging tree. So she saw all of this and then heard about what happened later, and was spreading that rumor, or not even a rumor. She was spreading that story, yeah.

00:40:40.84 – 00:41:18.24

That true story. So finally, he found like he found a viable lead in the case, and he was like, Okay, we got we. Yeah, I think we're right here. So Jordan Oscar Jordan goes to his boss, Sheriff Butch Freeman, and tells him that. Tim was last seen with this guy, Frank and Bill, just hours before his death. Going in the direction of where his brutalized body is found. Jordan went to the sheriff in order to get an approval to interview both of these men and was absolutely stunned. When, rather than approve his strategy, Sheriff Freeman inexplicably pulled him off of the case and reassigned him to traffic duty.

00:41:18.98 – 00:41:32.50

What the fuck he gets a viable lead? Like, what would have closed the case then and there, that's the most transparent thing I've ever seen, would have closed the case then and there. And he said, Mmm, I don't sorry, you need to go back to traffic duty.

00:41:33.78 – 00:41:44.64

Can you imagine? And again, Officer Jordan is a Black man. Yeah, gets, gets to, finally, like, possibly chase down justice is cracking a case.

00:41:45.14 – 00:41:54.98

And then they're like, Hey, go stand in direct traffic again. Yeah, well, you know that these two men are most likely the men that did this to a Black man, and.

2Speaker 2
00:41:55.52 – 00:42:02.44

You another black man, just go direct traffic, we're good. We gonna just say this is coincidence, or what?

1Speaker 1
00:42:03.60 – 00:42:11.54

Can you imagine? I can't even begin to imagine how he would have felt in that moment. Yeah, because you're helpless, exactly.

00:42:11.76 – 00:42:16.88

Like, he must have felt so helpless, helpless and fucking angry, angry, yeah.

00:42:17.20 – 00:42:28.10

He later remembered I was told, Thank you, but we're not gonna need your assistance anymore. Fuck and you, honestly, you must feel fucking flabbergasted, flummoxed in that moment, yeah.

00:42:28.16 – 00:42:32.64

Just like, What like, you're really gonna do this, like, come again?

2Speaker 2
00:42:32.80 – 00:42:38.74

You're gonna do this with your whole chest, like you're just gonna throw me on traffic duty with your whole fucking chest. And this is my livelihood.

1Speaker 1
00:42:38.94 – 00:42:43.62

I can't just like, quit and get another job somewhere else. Well, that's the problem here, I have to stay here.

2Speaker 2
00:42:43.70 – 00:42:56.58

They know they have the power here because they know that this is somebody's livelihood. They're not just gonna throw it away. And it's like, but he's sitting here, struggling with probably so many emotions and so many different feelings. Yeah, yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:42:56.70 – 00:43:16.16

It's unbelievable the fact that this is a true story, and yeah, it's so similar to other stories, it's just fucked. But in his place, Freeman assigned a white officer who went out to Carey's Park and interviewed Frank Gebhardt. According to Frank, he was at his girlfriend's house all evening on the night of the murder. And she corroborated that at the time of the interview.

00:43:16.48 – 00:43:20.74

And as far as anybody knew, there was actually no attempt to even interview Bill Moore.

2Speaker 2
00:43:21.54 – 00:43:23.58

Interesting choice. Yeah, that's very interesting.

1Speaker 1
00:43:23.90 – 00:43:48.10

So not long after Oscar Jordan was taken off of the case, the Coggins family started getting anonymous threats at home and at work. Tim's stepfather, Robert, got to his job as a bus driver one morning and found that somebody had left a bloody t-shirt on the bus that he drove. Every single morning. What? A few days later, somebody threw a brick through one of their windows and it had a note tied to it that read You're next, what the fuck.

00:43:48.10 – 00:44:08.84

Like this family was terrorized, first, they lost one of their like children, brothers, like one of their most like loved ones, loved people. And then and then they had to see a picture of what happened to him. That's they got a knock on their door after he was missing, and that's what they saw and now this is what they're going through.

00:44:09.56 – 00:44:23.90

Wow, and it doesn't end there. And I just want to give a quick trigger. Warning for animal abuse and violence. Because they arrived home one afternoon and found a decapitated dog in the hallway of their home. What the fuck somebody went, broke into their home.

00:44:24.08 – 00:44:28.26

First of all, did that to an animal broke into their home and left that in their home.

00:44:30.26 – 00:44:34.12

There's no. It makes you, it makes you genuinely sick, like it makes you nauseated.

2Speaker 2
00:44:35.58 – 00:44:41.94

I don't even know what to say, like, this is just like and why this kind of behavior is just so funny.

00:44:41.96 – 00:44:52.14

It's fucking subterranean to me. It is like, it's just like, what the fuck? And these people are just walking around, living there. I'm bragging about it.

00:44:52.52 – 00:44:52.98

And it's.

1Speaker 1
00:44:53.92 – 00:44:58.88

There's no reason to do something like this to anyone.

2Speaker 2
00:44:59.22 – 00:45:08.56

No, no, for for people to be able to sit there and like to to justify this in their own mind, somehow, somehow.

1Speaker 1
00:45:08.56 – 00:45:10.06

And, like, lay their head on a pillow.

2Speaker 2
00:45:10.38 – 00:45:20.18

The mental gymnastics you have to be doing to justify this kind of like, oozy behavior is it's really unbelievable. It's beyond, yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:45:30.68 – 00:45:55.50

She struck him with her motor vehicle, she had been under the influence, and then she left him there. In January 2022, local woman Karen Reed was implicated in the mysterious death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O'Keefe. It was alleged that after an innocent night out for drinks with friends, Karen and John got into a lover's quarrel en route to the next location. What happens next depends on who you ask.

00:45:55.84 – 00:46:19.08

Was it a crime of passion? If you believe the prosecution, it's because the evidence was so compelling. This was clearly an intentional act. And his cause of death was blunt force trauma with hypothermia. Or a corrupt police coverup, if you believe the defense theory, however, this was all a coverup to prevent one of their own from going down. Everyone had an opinion.

00:46:19.88 – 00:46:40.48

And after the 10 week trial, the jury could not come to a unanimous decision to end in a mistrial. It's just a confirmation of just how complicated this case is. Law and Crime presents the most in-depth analysis to date of the sensational case. In Karen. You can listen to Karen exclusively with Wondery Plus.

00:46:50.28 – 00:47:19.68

Talisa later said We knew from the beginning that he had been killed because he was Black. But the harassment was so bad that after Tim's funeral, his family actually chose to bury him without a headstone for fear of further victimization. They knew where he was and like they could go visit him. But they couldn't commemorate his memory in any kind of way because they were worried that his grave would also be desecrated. And you can't blame them one fucking bit, no, but holy shit, no.

2Speaker 2
00:47:20.02 – 00:47:30.62

They can't even properly bury and memorialize their loved one, because people won't even let that lie. No, and they wouldn't have no like, I mean.

1Speaker 1
00:47:30.66 – 00:47:33.52

Look what they were doing to this family after after what they did to him.

2Speaker 2
00:47:33.54 – 00:47:41.16

They can't even think like he's not even safe and deaf. No, no, his niece, that's you, that's. It's disgusting.

00:47:41.16 – 00:47:46.24

That's a different level, it's just a different level that these poor people had to go through what they.

1Speaker 1
00:47:46.24 – 00:47:57.44

Went through continuously for so many years. That's awful, his niece, Heather, said. We never put a headstone on his grave. We didn't know if they were going to desecrate the grave, We didn't know what they were capable of.

00:47:57.80 – 00:48:05.32

And then they're probably living in fear, wondering, is that going to happen to me next? Are they just terrorizing me up to the point where then they're going to grab me?

2Speaker 2
00:48:05.32 – 00:48:08.52

And do that to me, absolutely, that's a real fear.

1Speaker 1
00:48:08.60 – 00:48:42.94

The fear that these people had to have been living in like terrifying. But with Oscar Jordan no longer leading the investigation, the case quickly went cold, almost as though no one at the sheriff's office had any interest in solving the murder. It's almost like crazy. By December, just two months after Tim's murder, the department shelved the case and cited a lack of leads and a need to allocate resources elsewhere. Leaving the Coggins family without answers and completely hopeless, Heather commented Who do you turn to for help when the number one people who are supposed to help you don't?

00:48:43.44 – 00:48:46.24

Yeah, like, who, who do you go to again?

2Speaker 2
00:48:46.34 – 00:48:54.96

The helpless feeling there and the absolute desperation that goes unanswered must be I can't even conceive of it.

1Speaker 1
00:48:55.10 – 00:49:01.90

Your whole life is here, That's the thing, your job, your house, your family. every. You can't just get up and leave. That's the thing it's not.

2Speaker 2
00:49:01.98 – 00:49:12.80

It's not that easy just to get the hell away from here and get to somewhere. And who? At this point, I'm like, and you don't even know where you could go, where do you go? That it's going to be better and where, and you can't.

1Speaker 1
00:49:13.00 – 00:49:16.54

Tim's here. Yeah, Tim's grave is there, you can't leave him.

2Speaker 2
00:49:17.32 – 00:49:25.52

And again, you can't. It's not that easy just to pick up and run to another state or run somewhere else. It's like, that's that, and they know that.

1Speaker 1
00:49:25.68 – 00:49:31.40

And unfortunately, by design, it wasn't. It was specifically not easy for the Black community to have the resources.

2Speaker 2
00:49:31.90 – 00:49:33.98

The power Dynamic knows that.

1Speaker 1
00:49:34.80 – 00:50:14.68

And eventually, the months turned into years, years turned into decades, leaving the family to face the likelihood that Tim's killer would absolutely never be brought to justice. So, due to limited resources, major crimes in rural parts of Georgia, especially murder, are actually typically handled by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, who are much better equipped to investigate the cases. Since the early 2000s, the GBI actually had a practice of cycling its cold cases for review. In the hope that new officers, fresh eyes, might pick something up that other previous investigators had missed. So in 2016, the Timothy Coggins murder case, then 33 years cold.

2Speaker 2
00:50:16.24 – 00:50:20.10

33 years, 33 years with nothing.

1Speaker 1
00:50:20.22 – 00:50:59.78

But it made its way to the desk of Jared Coleman, a young agent who had started with the GBI just two years earlier. After looking over the case file, what struck Coleman the most was not what the file actually contained, but what was noticeably absent from the file. Oscar Jordan's notes heavily indicated that he believed Frank Gebhart and Bill Moore to be the two white men seen with Tim outside of the club, and he strongly suspected that they were the two who were responsible for Tim's murder. But as far as Coleman could tell, aside from the one brief interview with Frank Gebhart, There was very little attempt to question either man or even verify their alibis on the night of the murder.

00:50:59.98 – 00:51:09.94

That's wild. Like his girlfriend was like, Yeah, he was here with me, and they were like, cool, cool. And then nobody. Even as far as anybody knows, there was never an interview with Bill Moore back and back when this actually.

2Speaker 2
00:51:09.94 – 00:51:22.00

Happened well. And the good thing is, like, as we know, like, uh, girlfriends and boyfriends never lie when it comes to alibis for their uh, for their, for their partner. So yeah, never. It's really good that they.

1Speaker 1
00:51:22.42 – 00:51:25.20

That they just let that go checked anywhere else. Yeah, exactly.

2Speaker 2
00:51:25.54 – 00:51:37.12

She would never lie about that. I'm sure all these people seem like they're really like, you know, tip top people. So yeah, I definitely don't double check those, those statements. I bet she's telling the truth, I bet it's fine.

00:51:37.20 – 00:51:37.76

A hundred percent.

1Speaker 1
00:51:38.42 – 00:51:47.70

Now, while there was very little evidence collected during the initial investigation, it appeared several key pieces of evidence collected in 1983 had just gone.

2Speaker 2
00:51:47.70 – 00:51:54.36

Missing. Oh, I, you know, that happens, it happens all the time, it always happens in very specific cases, but it happens. Yeah, totally.

00:51:54.72 – 00:51:54.84

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:51:55.10 – 00:52:01.56

Among the evidence that had gone missing Tim's pants and sweater, which actually had contained hair samples when they found them. Oh.

2Speaker 2
00:52:01.60 – 00:52:04.52

I bet that wasn't, that was just coincidence. Yeah, just crazy, yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:52:04.52 – 00:52:10.90

The wooden table leg, oh, uh, the Jack Daniels bottle and the tire impressions that were taken at the scene.

2Speaker 2
00:52:11.42 – 00:52:15.44

Uh, so the evidence, so literally almost every piece of evidence that they had.

1Speaker 1
00:52:15.48 – 00:52:19.96

Because, remember, they barely had any evidence at the scene other than most of those things.

2Speaker 2
00:52:20.12 – 00:52:35.72

When this shit happens, in cases where they're just like, we lost mountains of evidence for this massive murder case. You're just like, who fucking believes that? Like, who? Who's the person? That's like, Yeah, that happens like, I also want to know.

1Speaker 1
00:52:36.06 – 00:52:44.54

Who destroyed that? Yeah, who are you, who went out and did whatever the fuck they did with that to make it get lost? And then went home and ate dinner with their family? Yeah?

00:52:44.62 – 00:52:45.14

Show me them.

2Speaker 2
00:52:45.58 – 00:52:51.10

Who laid their head on a fluffy little pillow that night after getting rid of?

1Speaker 1
00:52:51.10 – 00:52:55.16

That evidence? And just went on to live their fucking privileged ass life.

2Speaker 2
00:52:55.28 – 00:52:59.76

Well, well, probably living in the area and seeing this family.

1Speaker 1
00:52:59.76 – 00:53:00.60

This family.

2Speaker 2
00:53:00.82 – 00:53:12.24

Seeing them going through 30 plus years of torment and not knowing what happened to their loved one. Yep, but every night just fluffy pillow.

1Speaker 1
00:53:12.40 – 00:53:17.92

Lay your head on it, I, I'm angry right now.

2Speaker 2
00:53:18.08 – 00:53:50.54

Like, I just, I. So many people had to be so fucking gross in this case, and that's what was really. This isn't just like, not that, it's like ever. Just, you know, like the one murderer, you know what I mean, that like, like in a murder case, you'll have, like, the bad person who did it, you know, and usually you can count on the investigators. To be the good guys and to be like, you get the good guys and you get the good people. That come out and fix this for the family, or like, at least try to come and put something together for the family.

00:53:50.82 – 00:53:59.18

Yeah, but in this one, there's just layers of nasty, nasty people that are just making this exponentially worse.

1Speaker 1
00:53:59.44 – 00:54:27.08

In 1983, there was one good guy, Oscar Jordan, who got reassigned to traffic. As far as we know, like, as far as key players in this story, I'm sure there were other, like good people on the police force. I'm not saying, I mean, I know for a fact, that there was a lot of absolutely deplorable, disgusting humans. That weren't even just investigators, like secretaries that worked at the at the police station were in on this. That's what I'm talking about, it's like it goes.

00:54:27.08 – 00:54:28.22

So it's so far reaching.

2Speaker 2
00:54:28.22 – 00:54:36.46

That's why this kind of thing is so, it's like, so beyond the scope of comprehension, because it's like so many people.

1Speaker 1
00:54:36.46 – 00:54:40.70

Have to be so shitty at one place and time all together, yep.

2Speaker 2
00:54:41.06 – 00:54:58.42

Like, they all have to join hands and be the shittiest, kind of like subterranean fucking filth scum together. Yeah, it's not again. Not just you can't just look at these bad guys and be like, Wow, bad guys, subterranean, shitty ooze.

00:54:58.68 – 00:55:04.40

Bye like, put them away, and like we all did that, it's like, there's too many, there's too many here.

1Speaker 1
00:55:04.64 – 00:55:31.02

To think of, there's a lot of victims in this case, Timothy Coggins, obviously, Timothy Coggins family, obviously. Then I couldn't stop thinking about Oscar Jordan while I was writing this. Having to go into this police station where he works every single day, knowing one that he was taken off the case. But you know, there was whispering going on about what they were doing with this evidence to get it lost, what they were doing to actively ignore this case.

2Speaker 2
00:55:31.02 – 00:55:32.68

You know, he was probably feeling all of that.

1Speaker 1
00:55:32.68 – 00:55:45.80

He was there the day it got shelved, and it's like, he's a Black man, and he was. He was so close to solving this. Or at least like, like trying breaking it open, breaking it open, like doing anything.

00:55:46.68 – 00:56:14.46

And he just had to walk into a police station where everyone was against him. Every single person was against him and against his, his community of people. But just the fact that he had to go through that is horrific. But the obviously limited effort invested in finding Tim's killer was surprising to Coleman. But things only got remember. It's surprising because it's 2016, and like, obviously, still, racism is very much alive during 2016 times.

00:56:14.66 – 00:56:44.28

And now, like I said, but you can. You can imagine that he would be fucking shocked to be like. This was 1983 and like, nothing was done and everything was lost, yeah. But things only got more disturbing as he combed through the surviving evidence as he dug deeper into the evidence. He started finding correspondence from an inmate named Christopher Vaughn, who actually reached out to investigators many times regarding the Coggins murder. He's disgusting, too, but for some reason, he wanted to help in this.

00:56:44.28 – 00:56:53.14

It's, it's very conflicting, people are weird. Uh, yeah. In 2016, he was serving a sentence for a trigger warning. This is gross.

00:56:53.66 – 00:57:06.74

Child molestation, Wow, yeah. But in October of 1983, when he was a 10 year old boy, he had gone out squirrel hunting with his father in Griffin. He and his father were the ones that discovered Tim Coggins dead body.

00:57:07.40 – 00:57:16.92

Wow, which is just really nuts to imagine that. Like a 10 year old with his dad, saw this and then still became a monster.

2Speaker 2
00:57:17.20 – 00:57:24.72

I was just going to say, saw the depths of depravity and then decided to reach there. Yeah, interesting.

1Speaker 1
00:57:25.16 – 00:57:33.04

Your brain can't really compute this. Because he wants to help, and he, he does help in this investigation, but he's fucking disgusting.

2Speaker 2
00:57:33.36 – 00:57:40.48

That's that's, it's heinous, but accordingly, there's no true good people in this, not in this at all.

1Speaker 1
00:57:40.48 – 00:58:07.06

Except, except Oscar, Jordan and Coleman here. But, according to Vaughn's letter, since the murder in 1983, Frank Gebhardt had admitted to him several times that he and Bill Moore had killed. Tim Coggins. After Frank learned that his girlfriend, Mickey Guy, had been cheating on him with Tim. A decision that she made, I was just going to say she made that decision as far as like, I don't know if Tim knew even that Mickey had a boyfriend.

00:58:07.26 – 00:58:12.88

Exactly, he just liked Mickey, that's the thing, and if she's and if they're together and he lives on the difference that he doesn't know.

2Speaker 2
00:58:12.88 – 00:58:18.56

He doesn't know, and and you can't prove that he did, like, that's the thing. It's like, that's she's the one who cheated.

00:58:18.70 – 00:58:19.94

And even if he did.

1Speaker 1
00:58:20.72 – 00:58:24.00

That's not an acceptable way to handle that, that's the other thing it's like.

2Speaker 2
00:58:24.04 – 00:58:29.42

That's that doesn't even touch the fact that there's literally no justification for what.

1Speaker 1
00:58:29.42 – 00:58:49.30

You did none, but he confessed. Frank confessed, uh, first to Vaughn at a house party when Vaughn was just a teenager. But Vaughn claimed he confessed several times after that, always in a proud and boastful manner, according to Vaughn. Gebhardt told him they killed Tim and taken all the evidence back to his house and dumped it in an old well on the property.

2Speaker 2
00:58:50.46 – 00:58:53.94

Fuck, where's that old? Well, I'll let you know, Oh good.

1Speaker 1
00:58:54.10 – 00:59:32.60

Coleman said the case really hadn't been fully dived into since 1983. But based on his cursory review, he could tell that. The sheriff's office in 1983 had made essentially zero effort to follow up on any leads after Oscar, Jordan was taken off the case. So, now, completely determined to fill in these gaps, Coleman paid a visit to Bill Moore, who was immediately uncooperative and wildly evasive. I'm shocked. Despite having lived in the small town for his entire fucking life, this is a small, rural community where, like everyone, knows everyone. Moore claimed to know nothing about this case.

00:59:33.06 – 00:59:38.78

Shut the fuck up, know nothing about this case. Told Coleman that he had actually never even heard of Tim Coggins. Wow.

2Speaker 2
00:59:38.98 – 00:59:42.90

What, what a what a choice to make, what a choice to go that route.

1Speaker 1
00:59:43.06 – 00:59:58.30

You live in the trailer park where multiple people are walking around talking about this, you live in the trailer park where he was last seen. Even if you do have nothing to do with this, you fucking heard of it, you've definitely heard of it, you've heard of this wild, wild, insane, disgusting story.

00:59:58.90 – 01:00:04.26

At least they're idiots, so there's that. At least they're idiots. They sure are, yeah.

01:00:04.36 – 01:00:18.34

I, he said, I've never heard of Tim Coggins. Yeah, no. Coleman immediately knew that Bill was lying. But the problem was that more than three decades had passed since the murder, and several of the original witnesses had died, including Mickey Guy. She was dead.

01:00:18.56 – 01:01:01.68

Oh shit, so like Oscar Jordan before him. Agent Coleman now strongly suspected Frank and Bill of involvement in Tim's murder. He was like, I think you had the right guys from the start. But given the limited investigation done in 1983 and the disappearance quote unquote of key evidence over the years. He was going to need a lot of help to prove that either of these two men were involved. So, as such, he approached the newly elected sheriff of Spalding County, Daryl Dix, to ask for the sheriff's cooperation in his investigation. Which, it's weird how, luckily, it doesn't repeat itself to the full extent. But how, like, like, somebody did this in 1983, however many years ago, and say, like, I want to, I want to do this.

01:01:01.82 – 01:01:20.64

I want to look into this more. And the sheriff then said, No, luckily this sheriff, Sheriff Dix was a man of integrity and recognized that. Local law enforcement had a lot of work to do in order to repair the rift and tensions caused by a very, very long history of racist policing in this area.

2Speaker 2
01:01:20.98 – 01:01:23.96

So thank goodness, someone is aware of that, yeah.
