00:00:12.08 – 00:00:12.52

What?

1Speaker 1
00:00:13.50 – 00:00:14.98

What's up champ? How are ya?

2Speaker 2
00:00:15.12 – 00:00:15.58

I'm good.

1Speaker 1
00:00:15.80 – 00:00:16.44

Good to see ya.

2Speaker 2
00:00:16.66 – 00:00:17.46

Good to see you again.

1Speaker 1
00:00:17.66 – 00:00:29.16

So you have been on a journey, my friend. A lot of things have happened. First of all, congratulations on securing this fight. That is a big deal. A lot of people doubted it was going to happen.

00:00:29.16 – 00:00:30.02

You were right.

2Speaker 2
00:00:30.78 – 00:00:41.30

Thank you, thank you. Yes, it was a big deal. It wasn't easy, but we finally got it. I got the help of a lot of people.

00:00:41.76 – 00:00:45.00

And the Saudis were very interested in this fight.

1Speaker 1
00:00:45.80 – 00:00:51.66

Yeah, it was one of those fights where you had to take a big gamble by relinquishing your UFC crown.

2Speaker 2
00:00:52.86 – 00:00:53.98

I didn't relinquish anything.

1Speaker 1
00:00:53.98 – 00:00:57.02

You didn't relinquish it. Well, fill me in on that, tell me what happened.

2Speaker 2
00:00:57.68 – 00:00:59.40

Well, we didn't come to an agreement.

1Speaker 1
00:00:59.76 – 00:01:04.52

You didn't come to an agreement, yeah, so you decided I'm not signing with the UFC, you're a free agent.

2Speaker 2
00:01:05.10 – 00:01:05.38

Yes.

1Speaker 1
00:01:06.20 – 00:01:12.30

And then did negotiations then start for the Tyson Fury fight? How did it start?

2Speaker 2
00:01:13.32 – 00:01:34.88

You know, it's been like four years since Tyson Fury and I have been going back and forth on social media. So there was a little bit of a warm-up somewhere there, and it kind of, like, took a couple months before we get to a conversation. You know, it wasn't just easy, those boxing promotions.

00:01:35.26 – 00:01:41.34

The boxing world is a little wild. Yeah, it's a little different, it's completely different, it's a different animal.

1Speaker 1
00:01:41.80 – 00:01:43.14

In what way, like, explain to us.

2Speaker 2
00:01:43.64 – 00:02:10.32

The way that they do things, you know. It's this guy from this promotion fighting against this guy from this promotion. Who has a better position, who has what to lose, who is getting what? And then how? They kind of, like, put things, I will not say manipulate, but a little bit like that. Everybody trying to adjust things on his own benefit, look, what is good for him, which is good.

00:02:10.68 – 00:02:12.36

But yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:02:12.56 – 00:02:24.30

A lot of boxing fights don't get made. Yeah, they get talked about for a long time, like Tyson Fury and Usyk, for a long time. Was Terrence Crawford and Earl Spence. They get talked about for a long time.

00:02:24.62 – 00:02:28.88

And they almost get made, and then they don't get made, and they almost get made, and then they don't get made.

2Speaker 2
00:02:29.28 – 00:02:30.74

A lot of politics behind.

1Speaker 1
00:02:31.28 – 00:02:31.46

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:02:31.56 – 00:02:50.02

A lot of promotion that would be behind the fight, just to, you know, push their position. Everybody is pushing his position. It's not mostly about the fight, it's about like, okay, what? We control the game? Do we have enough control here?

00:02:50.26 – 00:02:53.40

Do we control everything else? Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:02:53.50 – 00:02:59.20

So was it frustrating for you? Because I imagine there was a while where you weren't sure whether or not it was going to be made?

2Speaker 2
00:03:00.04 – 00:03:21.84

It wasn't frustrating, you know, before I made my decision when I separated with the UFC, and I knew, I mean, a long time before. I remember, even when I fought Syringan, even before that fight, I was telling myself, and I was even telling this on interview.

00:03:22.12 – 00:03:35.06

Like, okay, if this is the end, then he has to end my way, you know? So, not because I was sure that it's going to happen, I knew that it could have not happened, right?

00:03:35.46 – 00:03:52.02

But I was to be in peace with my decision. So that's the thing about it. And I'm very happy that it happened makes it even better. But I knew there was a risk that it didn't happen.

00:03:52.40 – 00:03:54.70

But I had to take a chance.

1Speaker 1
00:03:55.06 – 00:04:01.86

So what was the hold up with the UFC, like, what led you to not sign?

2Speaker 2
00:04:02.90 – 00:04:14.98

There was a lot of frustration over the years. I think since my fight against Stipe, my first fight against Stipe, my relation with the UFC never been the same.

1Speaker 1
00:04:15.54 – 00:04:15.80

Really.

2Speaker 2
00:04:15.92 – 00:04:16.80

Yeah, why?

1Speaker 1
00:04:17.14 – 00:04:17.74

In what way?

2Speaker 2
00:04:18.10 – 00:04:24.26

I don't know, I tried everything, I wasn't, I didn't, I wasn't.

00:04:25.16 – 00:04:37.12

I felt like I wasn't in the right place and after that then I get directly with fight. It was like the worst fight and that didn't help me at all, you know?

00:04:37.66 – 00:04:55.82

So I think from that moment I was already put in some position out there because I came back. I won multiple fights and they came with a new deal. This was after Junior dos Santos.

00:04:56.12 – 00:04:58.34

Back in June 2017.

00:04:59.16 – 00:05:18.40

And then he was Mick who called for a new deal. And then until my team was on the way to the negotiation. Who was in Anaheim when Stipe and D.C. was fighting the second time?

00:05:19.04 – 00:05:28.40

And then they were like, No, they didn't say no, no. New deal for Francis. He still has three fights on his contract. And to be honest, I was even happy.

00:05:28.54 – 00:05:41.74

Because I wanted to knock that deal out. By that time, I understood a little bit about the market. I just wanted to fight out my contract and renegotiate us free, you know?

00:05:42.50 – 00:05:44.88

But then?

00:05:46.48 – 00:06:03.06

A month after, we get a call from I think Hunter or somebody there, yeah. They said, Oh, let's talk about a new deal for Francis. And at that time there was no new deal. We just wanted to fight.

00:06:03.74 – 00:06:13.84

It was already September, Yeah, we were in September, and my last fight was in June, I wanted to fight.

00:06:14.88 – 00:06:20.48

So the new deal stuff was holding me back, they didn't give me a fight.

1Speaker 1
00:06:20.48 – 00:06:22.68

Because they wanted you to sign a new deal.

2Speaker 2
00:06:22.72 – 00:06:23.20

They wanted me to fight.

1Speaker 1
00:06:23.20 – 00:06:26.32

And you didn't want to sign a new deal, you wanted to fight your contract down and renegotiate.

2Speaker 2
00:06:26.32 – 00:06:28.34

I wanted to fight my contract down.

1Speaker 1
00:06:28.64 – 00:06:30.06

So they were slowing things down.

2Speaker 2
00:06:30.08 – 00:06:42.38

They were slowing things down. So if you see, the interval between my Junior Dos Santos fight and Junior Rosenstruck fight was almost a year. I mean, it's also Covid, right, yeah?

00:06:42.64 – 00:06:52.58

There was a Covid in between, but without Covid, it would still be like 10 months, right? And then from Rosenstruck to Stipe, same thing.

00:06:53.28 – 00:06:58.48

Then Stipe to Syringan, almost the same thing. It was mostly about the contract.

1Speaker 1
00:06:59.14 – 00:07:03.70

So then finally, you fight out the contract and then what happens?

2Speaker 2
00:07:04.98 – 00:07:17.20

We didn't come to an agreement at all because during this time there was still a negotiation, pushing and stuff. And I wanted to fight out that contract proposal of money.

00:07:17.44 – 00:07:31.86

Obviously they know my position because I was pressured financially. You know, when you have a fight, you expect to fight at least at that level. At that moment, I was expecting to fight at least two or three times a year, right?

00:07:32.42 – 00:07:43.18

Then I get to the point that I have one fight, I have nothing. So I was limited of income, stuff like that, then I started to borrow money.

00:07:45.14 – 00:07:59.70

Even before the Stipe fight, when they announced that fight, I needed to call to ask for advance of my purse. To finance my training camp, I had no money, but I was there training and getting ready for almost a year.

00:08:01.44 – 00:08:03.14

So I took some advance.

1Speaker 1
00:08:03.46 – 00:08:04.64

That's got to be very stressful.

2Speaker 2
00:08:05.92 – 00:08:19.36

Yeah, but one thing, and that's like one thing that I'm always grateful about in my life. I used to this situation and I told myself, like these people, they don't know me. I can live out of nothing.

00:08:20.04 – 00:08:32.94

I live in the street, bro, and then I'm here in Las Vegas. You think like, Okay, I don't fight, I just have to change everything. I'm able to live out of the bare minimum.

00:08:34.14 – 00:08:56.38

And I don't care if I walk around, you guys say, ho-ho, champ, UFC contender, whatever it is, man. I just live based of what is in my, based of my asset, I don't live beyond that. That's why I like, I don't really trust those credit card system or those loans and stuff. That's America shit, bro.

00:08:56.72 – 00:09:08.06

I don't trust that because when it lets you down, it lets you down. Yeah, for sure. I check my wallet, whatever is in my wallet, I live based on that.

00:09:08.06 – 00:09:22.48

I don't go loan and stuff unless, like, I'm forced at some point, or it's an investment. Like having taken the money, borrowing money for your training camp, you know, that's a different thing.

1Speaker 1
00:09:23.02 – 00:09:27.06

So you win the serial gun fight, then what happens?

2Speaker 2
00:09:28.08 – 00:09:45.42

Well, then, um, first thing I didn't come to the ring, to the octagon for the belt. Yeah. And then after that they get this dinner, invite us to this dinner, trying to smooth things out.

00:09:46.94 – 00:10:04.14

Again, the condition at that time, I think at that time for me, it was more than a contract. It was like a lot of frustration from the past almost three years. You know, I'm like, Okay, I have no guarantee that signing this contract, I will not get into what?

00:10:05.68 – 00:10:14.32

I was, I have been to in the past three years, so how about we change something that will make me feel secure?

1Speaker 1
00:10:14.72 – 00:10:15.64

And what did you want to change?

2Speaker 2
00:10:19.56 – 00:10:29.64

A lot of things I want in my contract. First of all, I want a contract without extension because I have seen how they can abuse of those extension.

1Speaker 1
00:10:29.96 – 00:10:31.50

Can you explain to me how the extension works?

2Speaker 2
00:10:31.50 – 00:11:01.90

Oh well, I mean, there's not a way that it works. The extension is that? Um, because they say, if you deny a fight, they can extend you for six months or something. If you're hurt and can't fight, they can extend you for six months or something. But the problem, the UFC is the judge and the party, they decide if they will extend you.

00:11:02.06 – 00:11:19.36

You have no say, so when they say, Oh, you fight tomorrow, you say, Uh, no, now I'm like, Okay, no problem. We were just checking. And then maybe a week after, you will receive a letter of extension like your contract has been extended for six months.

00:11:19.82 – 00:11:21.60

And that's what happened with me.

1Speaker 1
00:11:22.38 – 00:11:32.02

Even if you're injured, like, say, if they propose a fight for you, like here we are in September, if they propose a fight for you in Madison Square Garden in November. And you say, I can't because I'm injured.

2Speaker 2
00:11:32.62 – 00:11:33.66

Oh, no, that extension.

1Speaker 1
00:11:34.04 – 00:11:35.92

Then they put up a six month extension. Oh yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:11:36.80 – 00:11:37.60

That's extension.

1Speaker 1
00:11:37.90 – 00:11:39.44

Anytime you refuse a fight.

2Speaker 2
00:11:39.66 – 00:11:40.50

Is that what it is? yeah.

00:11:42.46 – 00:11:45.74

And refuse is subjective, right?

1Speaker 1
00:11:46.20 – 00:11:51.16

It could mean you can't fight because you're injured, like when you tore your knee ligaments.

2Speaker 2
00:11:51.74 – 00:11:56.26

Oh, no, that is an extension, extension. Yeah, that's clearly an extension.

00:11:56.66 – 00:12:20.32

For example, my extension, for example, the first one when I get when I first DP, right? And I have been fighting almost once a year in the past three years. I first DP on March 27th and then April 2nd. Mick is calling my team and I tell them like, Oh, I want to fight. Stay active.

00:12:20.42 – 00:12:35.46

I want to fight twice this year, again Summer, which is July or August and December, and then April 2nd. They are calling to ask me to fight. And I was getting ready. It was a big moment in my life.

00:12:35.54 – 00:12:39.10

I'm like, I'm bringing this trophy home, this trophy home.

1Speaker 1
00:12:39.26 – 00:12:39.34

Right?

2Speaker 2
00:12:40.12 – 00:12:55.74

Right, and they called to ask me if I can fight in June 12th. it was June 12th, June 6th, or something like that. I'm like, Bro, give me a time, I mean, they say, no.

00:12:55.80 – 00:13:17.44

We were just offering in case because Francis said he want to fight twice this year. I'm like, Yes, I do, and I said July the earliest, and August and December. And I know that I can take one, two weeks, two, three weeks out, maybe go home, do stuff and come back.

00:13:18.10 – 00:13:30.20

And I'm like, No, no, no, totally understandable. He was just to check in case it worked for you, it wasn't really.

00:13:31.62 – 00:13:55.22

A couple of months after, I received an extension about that. But you know why? Because my contract originally supposed to end in May 20th of that year, so if my contract end on May 20th of that year. That means the championship close kicks in, which is one year.

00:13:56.88 – 00:14:12.48

But if they extend me, I have to go all the way to the extension before the championship close kicks in. So it was more time. Yeah, so when they say no, it's OK, no problem.

00:14:12.58 – 00:14:29.42

We were just checking and I was in Cameroon on May 19th. So one day before my original contract, which was 14 months, expired and then the championship kicks in, I received an extension letter.

00:14:29.52 – 00:14:32.98

I was in Cameroon suffering of Covid at that time.

00:14:34.68 – 00:14:41.92

So I received an extension letter, so now I'm extended until November 20th.

1Speaker 1
00:14:42.44 – 00:14:44.52

Even though you told them you wanted to fight in July.

2Speaker 2
00:14:45.04 – 00:14:45.16

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:14:47.40 – 00:14:48.66

So they just tacked on.

2Speaker 2
00:14:48.88 – 00:14:54.30

No, they just tacked on and you have nothing to say. It's effective from the moment that they send that letter out.

1Speaker 1
00:14:54.32 – 00:14:58.22

OK, so your new contract, you wanted? No extensions, that's one thing.

2Speaker 2
00:14:58.34 – 00:14:59.68

Yeah, that's one thing, OK?

1Speaker 1
00:15:00.16 – 00:15:02.70

Was one of them the ability to box.

2Speaker 2
00:15:03.56 – 00:15:12.02

One of them was the ability to box. They said. That wasn't an option. Boxing is dead. It's not possible this and that.

1Speaker 1
00:15:13.20 – 00:15:24.02

Now, what does that feel like to you, knowing that Conor McGregor did it and fought Floyd Mayweather and made $100 million? What is that like for you to be sitting there, being told that you can't box?

2Speaker 2
00:15:26.22 – 00:15:41.02

Well, I don't used to take what people tell me for an answer, right? I used to do my own thing, right in my own way.

00:15:41.46 – 00:15:43.76

Right, and it seems to work pretty good.

00:15:45.36 – 00:16:01.56

But I wasn't going to force to change everything, I wasn't expecting to go there and demand this, demand that and just have everything. It's a big company, it's like an institution, so there is a way that they do things and that can change.

00:16:02.18 – 00:16:16.70

So I'm like, OK, if so, let's take boxing out. Why? Because give me three fights contract of three fights. I knew that I cannot get three fight contract in a year.

00:16:17.62 – 00:16:29.60

Then, from that moment, I was free. Because I want a middle ground like an alternative, a way to get out by giving something out, to get something at the end, got it.

00:16:31.16 – 00:16:59.52

Because it's really hard to get in a negotiation and just like, Oh, I want this, I want that, I want that. And stop there. At some point. You have to compromise to push back, give something in order to get something. So stuff like that was the thing that I was about it. And that seems to be attractive to them. So one three fight deal, no extension.

00:17:00.32 – 00:17:14.52

That seems to be attractive. Two Fight was supposed to be potentially Junjuns Fight and Rematch, and One Fight is the trilogy with Stipe. That was the request and work for both parties.

00:17:16.62 – 00:17:36.64

Then we get to another point sponsorship deal. Why? sponsorship deal? Because before that I had a deal. After the Stipe fight, I had a deal on the table for over a million dollars for a cryptocurrency wallet.

00:17:38.54 – 00:17:41.52

So I was going to have, like, I think, 1.

00:17:41.52 – 00:17:58.76

2 million, which is the money that I didn't, I never had in the fight. I was going to have that in a sponsorship. And the deal was this close to sign. And then they announced the Crypto.com deal, and then the party pulled off.

00:17:58.92 – 00:18:08.08

I'm like, Bro, we can do, you understand our position, you can carry this in the octagon while behind, we are trying to push.

1Speaker 1
00:18:10.36 – 00:18:12.60

Did you try to make a deal with crypto?

00:18:12.60 – 00:18:13.26

Com.

2Speaker 2
00:18:14.08 – 00:18:24.82

No, at that moment. Crypto.com. They don't care because they have to deal with the UFC. And you're going to wear it, whether you like it or not, you don't have a say.

00:18:25.70 – 00:18:34.86

And now I'm like, I think this is messed up. I need, we need to solve this. I need a sponsorship, I need a right to have my own sponsor.

00:18:37.30 – 00:18:48.82

Fighters should be able to have two, three sponsorships on their gears. I mean, I understand that we want to make this sport grow, make it nice.

00:18:50.56 – 00:19:00.98

But we can also, meanwhile, you can have a department who check all the sponsors. Like, Oh, no, this is not good because of this reason, it doesn't represent the sport well.

00:19:01.22 – 00:19:11.08

Right? But there are a lot of good staff out there that will also help fighters to, you know, to provide to get a little more money.

00:19:13.64 – 00:19:23.14

And that was another discussion. I'm like, Oh, you can't do that, that's not right, okay? So what is working exactly?

00:19:23.14 – 00:19:29.32

They make me some kind of like a proposal, which I don't know, it doesn't even make sense.

00:19:31.10 – 00:19:33.72

But and the other one was like?

00:19:36.86 – 00:20:21.32

Because of the fact that I was in this position for so long and I was just so powerless. The reason why I stay in this position, why I keep holding my ground was only because. In the contract, there is what they call the sunset clause. So, meaning like, after five years from the beginning, from the day you sign the contract, doesn't matter what is in the contract, the contract expire, they can extend you past that date. So my end goal from the beginning, from the moment that I know that, okay, I'm going to hold this ground. I knew that I have to face some obstacle.

00:20:22.06 – 00:20:27.90

So my end goal was the five years, the sunset I had the sunset date in my mind.

00:20:29.42 – 00:20:31.38

December 9th, 2022.

00:20:31.86 – 00:20:52.14

I had that day in my mind for like almost three years. So when I was receiving all this extension letter. I mean, I couldn't fight it either way, but in my mind, I was just like, It's okay. One thing that I know, just focus on December 9th, 2022 and then you will be fine.

00:20:53.96 – 00:21:05.12

So after that, then I'm like, okay, if I sign a new deal, I don't know. Even if there is not extension, there have been a proof of like.

00:21:06.98 – 00:21:31.18

How could I say, in a nice way, abuse of power, right? But why are we in this position? This is the position that every fighter get into, right? I mean, be feeling powerless. We might be many, hundreds of us, but it's every individual at time.

00:21:31.44 – 00:21:44.70

We are very separated, every case is separated. So which mean you're just weak. It's just you against the big monster, which is the company, the institution, so you can't fight.

00:21:45.20 – 00:21:50.88

How can we make it make sense? I mean, we are not going for Union.

00:21:52.66 – 00:22:28.96

But at least you guys sometime before make some decision. How about you have somebody in the room who can understand things from our perspective? Because I do believe that all the decision that you might make will hurt us is not mean to hurt. But maybe just because you don't understand our position. Maybe if somebody there is speaking for us, which again, I don't know who he could be. But just be mindful that, okay, this is fighter position, maybe that will help.

1Speaker 1
00:22:29.94 – 00:22:35.10

So you get through all this and then where did it break down to the point where you had to walk away?

2Speaker 2
00:22:36.28 – 00:22:44.10

It broke down December 6th, I think it was December 20th.

00:22:46.08 – 00:22:57.70

I don't remember 19th or 22nd, something like that. I had a dinner with Hunter after we'd been going through stuff. He said. No to this, no to that.

00:22:59.84 – 00:23:18.24

But I have a focus, I know that. Okay, if I give three fights here, since they are willing to take the three fights, it's going to make. I don't want to break this relationship like this, I don't want it to be a war. I can't stand.

00:23:20.92 – 00:23:42.54

I can't stand this so we can get trying to fix things up. But when we met again, that day was the first time. Over all this time that we have to talk about the financial aspect, I mean, he has to propose the financial aspect.

1Speaker 1
00:23:42.82 – 00:23:44.14

Right, so he proposed it at dinner.

2Speaker 2
00:23:44.54 – 00:23:51.16

Yeah, he proposed at dinner, and then I was just like, this guy is making fun of me.

1Speaker 1
00:23:51.58 – 00:23:52.20

Making fun of you.

2Speaker 2
00:23:52.34 – 00:23:52.58

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:23:53.00 – 00:23:57.36

So it was disrespectful, it was not valuable enough for you.

2Speaker 2
00:23:58.00 – 00:23:58.78

Not at all.

1Speaker 1
00:23:58.78 – 00:24:01.20

You were the champ at the time.

2Speaker 2
00:24:01.82 – 00:24:36.64

Yeah, I mean, not at all. Like, when you are talking about pay-per-view, then you are negotiating pay-per-view, and then you see number like 1.25, pay-bys and stuff like that. And the pay-per-view is going from 60 to 80 dollars in the past five years. And you realize that the 0.25 that is on top of it is just out of the 20 dollars that has been added on.

00:24:38.62 – 00:24:43.08

I'm like, come on, man, it's not my first pay-per-view contract.

1Speaker 1
00:24:46.44 – 00:24:47.70

Just wasn't enough money.

2Speaker 2
00:24:48.90 – 00:25:02.06

It wasn't even about the money, even how it was structured, even how it was. I'm like, this doesn't make sense, you know, I went home and I was so.

00:25:03.60 – 00:25:19.78

I don't know, frustrated or disappointed, I don't know how I can describe, but one thing I know I went online. I'm like, I'm missing Christmas with my family. I'm here training for a potential John Jones fight, which might not happen.

?Unknown Speaker
00:25:20.62 – 00:25:21.12

What for?

2Speaker 2
00:25:21.12 – 00:25:58.30

Seems like we're not getting anywhere close. I booked a flight that night to go to Cameroon, and I was in Cameroon in the Christmas. And then a couple of days after, I received a text from Mick, Mick Manor, who was, you know, Mick, usually sometimes just sends me a friendly text to check on me. And then we talked a little bit and then he talked about the contract, like he heard that we didn't come to a term. I said, Yes, he said, like, is it anything that I can do?

00:25:58.48 – 00:26:04.20

I'm like, I don't think so. We didn't just have an agreement.

00:26:06.18 – 00:26:28.36

And he said, How about I make it? We talk again, let's get in the meeting, we enter again and talk. And as I said, Mick, always be nice, and I couldn't say no, I'm like, Yes, let's try. In fact, I wish it could have worked.

00:26:29.10 – 00:26:42.96

You know, because, to be honest, I never like, really. Before all this, I never imagined a life out of the UFC. I thought it would be like my fighting platform until my retirement or something.

00:26:44.60 – 00:26:47.86

But clearly, things have changed along the way.

1Speaker 1
00:26:48.62 – 00:26:52.90

So even when they came back a second time, it still was not enough.

2Speaker 2
00:26:55.10 – 00:26:57.78

Yeah, because when they came back.

00:26:59.54 – 00:27:04.10

And all this time that we've been talking, they've been talking about.

00:27:06.66 – 00:27:10.90

What is the term back pay? Yeah, we're going to back pay you.

00:27:12.94 – 00:27:42.02

Because from all the fights that I've been refusing to renegotiate the pay that they were proposing, they said. They're going to back pay me that when they come out now and then make pay better. And now I'm like, OK, the back pay and this, and that? I'm like, No, no, everything is in this contract, this is it, this is it. And now I'm like, OK, well, then I don't know what to say.

00:27:42.28 – 00:27:51.16

If you say this is it because it's against your word, you say something, and now you say this is it. I still don't have the back pay, bro.

1Speaker 1
00:27:51.90 – 00:27:55.00

So they proposed the back pay and then they took it away.

2Speaker 2
00:27:55.66 – 00:28:01.96

Yeah, they've been proposing the back pay before after the Syria fight.

00:28:04.00 – 00:28:30.74

They invited us to a dinner and then keep reminding me how they're going to back pay me everything. Because I have a good proposal at the time, but I know that proposal and it was a good money. But I know it was just a pay to sign a contract. It was just to put the pen on the paper. It wasn't really like a good faith, like how they want to give me a good contract.

00:28:32.96 – 00:28:40.44

And they get to the point that I'm like, No, everything is in this. I'm like, OK, I don't see it.

00:28:42.76 – 00:28:52.38

And we were kind of like, silent for a couple of seconds, like, what does that mean? I'm like, I don't know. Then we hang up.

1Speaker 1
00:28:53.94 – 00:29:00.00

OK, so at that point do you start to talk to people like the PFL and the NFC?

2Speaker 2
00:29:00.86 – 00:29:21.16

No, no, at that point I stopped, I didn't do anything when we stopped that conversion. I didn't do anything until I started to see all these things on social media. And then I saw the dean of press conference like, Oh, we get rid of Francis.

00:29:22.06 – 00:29:35.74

Yes, he's not getting any younger, he's injured. I'm like, Yes, he's not getting any younger. But you were trying to have him, he's injured, but you were trying to have him now, you didn't come to an agreement.

00:29:36.06 – 00:30:02.74

You're batching him. That's when I started to respond, because I never really wanted this to be something on me. And I was expecting, like, maybe they go out there and just say, Oh, unfortunately, we didn't come to an agreement. And this and that, and thank you, good luck, right? And then we move away, but that's not how they do things over there.

1Speaker 1
00:30:03.04 – 00:30:06.76

So you decide to start talking to other people then.

2Speaker 2
00:30:07.82 – 00:30:08.02

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:30:08.22 – 00:30:09.76

And who do you talk to first?

2Speaker 2
00:30:12.16 – 00:30:28.12

People started to reach out. I wasn't even the one talking to people. And, you know, at that time, I just wanted to let this weight drop out of my shoulder for some reason. I feel relief, I feel relief.

00:30:28.12 – 00:30:41.02

There was so much pressure into that process and I was in Cameroon. I'm like, man, just live your life, you know, whatever is yours out there will come to you.

00:30:43.22 – 00:31:03.24

But I get the first person that reached out was Pete Mary from PFL. And then I was just like, Yes, let's hear him out, and he came out. We speak. He asked, like, what I'm looking for and stuff.

00:31:03.82 – 00:31:21.88

We speak and I'm like, Ah, looks good. A couple of days after he made a proposal, I look, I mean, I didn't even ask for, not anything. But when he make a proposal, I look at the structure of that proposal. I'm like, this is good, you know?

00:31:22.36 – 00:31:42.74

Everything was being taken into consideration. You know, obviously there is always going to be a way to negotiate in a contract, but the way that they structured it, I was already happy. I'm like, I think this guy is trying to make me happy.

1Speaker 1
00:31:43.18 – 00:31:48.00

Yeah, well, they need someone like you. PFL doesn't really have the big stars.

2Speaker 2
00:31:48.34 – 00:31:57.96

Yeah, but we keep that contract and at that time, I'm like, let's wait, I'm not rushing to anything, take some time and everything.

1Speaker 1
00:31:59.16 – 00:32:00.52

So you didn't sign that yet?

2Speaker 2
00:32:00.68 – 00:32:08.14

No, I didn't sign it. We also get to a chat room, we reach out, we talk same thing.

00:32:09.08 – 00:32:13.22

And then a couple of days, they send their own contract.

00:32:14.92 – 00:32:21.38

But when I was putting that contract next to the PFL one, it was day and night.

1Speaker 1
00:32:21.98 – 00:32:23.24

The PFL was much better.

2Speaker 2
00:32:23.64 – 00:32:23.90

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:32:25.14 – 00:32:29.30

And the PFL put a clause in to allow you to box.

2Speaker 2
00:32:29.98 – 00:32:33.08

Yeah, no, boxing was first for me.

1Speaker 1
00:32:33.40 – 00:32:35.94

Would the PFL be involved in the boxing promotion?

2Speaker 2
00:32:36.10 – 00:32:48.94

That was up to me, that was up to me, but they didn't really want to. It's not their expertise, but if they can help in some way or be involved in some way again, it's up to me.

00:32:49.77 – 00:32:53.76

So, a very independent contract.

00:32:56.24 – 00:33:07.00

But I was more looking at boxing, that's the first time that I started to have dialogue about boxing and stuff.

1Speaker 1
00:33:08.34 – 00:33:15.36

And I know there were some conversations with you fighting. There was Deontay Wilder, they talked about, I think they talked about Dillian White.

2Speaker 2
00:33:16.50 – 00:33:46.20

He was Deontay Wilder, we had a conversation with the Deontay Wilder team, even with him. I personally was in a meeting with him, conference with him. That we were talking about a potential to fight Dillian, and that was going well. And I think even to this day, we are kind of open about it.

00:33:46.20 – 00:34:19.20

It's just along the way, he has a potential opportunity right away. That they say, OK. We would like to pursue the conversation about what we have here. And for us, it was understandable. I'm like, OK, then let's explore, maybe after, and then right after that, I started a conversation for the fury fight.

00:34:21.60 – 00:34:45.68

Because I get a call, I was driving to the airport and I get a call to meet in New York for some conversation about the Fury fight. And then when I get in New York next week, we scheduled that on. Next week, I get in New York, we get to the room, I meet the people.

00:34:46.56 – 00:34:57.60

He was the right people we spoke. I hear them out and I'm like, I knew them right, and I'm like, OK, this is legit.

00:34:58.06 – 00:35:15.24

I think with these people behind, this fight is going to happen. And that's where I now put them in contact with my team to negotiate because they wanted me to do everything. Let's negotiate. I'm like, I don't do negotiation.

00:35:16.92 – 00:35:29.66

I listen, I talk about how I would like things to go, but I don't like to negotiate personally. I want this, I deserve this.

00:35:29.78 – 00:35:34.42

I'm that I'd rather have somebody do that on my behalf.

1Speaker 1
00:35:34.82 – 00:35:39.54

Somebody do that on your behalf and you want to respond to a good deal, you want a good deal brought to you.

2Speaker 2
00:35:39.60 – 00:35:51.50

Yeah, I want somebody, it's always good to have somebody in the mirror. That would take the temper of both parties, because a deal can fall off just because somebody is mad.

00:35:53.02 – 00:36:15.68

His ego takes over and the deal is off. But when there's somebody in between and you always come to like, OK, it's not him. And just to think about it. And that's what happened. Because sometimes with my team, there was frustrated and I'm like, Oh, no, this is not working.

00:36:16.20 – 00:36:22.82

And then they will come to you, then you would talk nice, be a nice cop, have no problem. I'm like, No.

00:36:23.18 – 00:36:29.34

But my team is saying this because they didn't mean to offend you, but I think, you know.

1Speaker 1
00:36:30.02 – 00:36:31.34

Got it frustrating, right?

2Speaker 2
00:36:31.68 – 00:36:40.08

Yeah, no, not frustrating. Complicated, yeah, but over the time you learn, you understand how it works and it's pretty easy.

00:36:40.32 – 00:36:41.50

OK, it's pretty easy.

1Speaker 1
00:36:42.02 – 00:36:57.94

So you're in the driver's seat now because you've left the UFC, you have all these opportunities on the table. Possibly Deontay Wilder, then it becomes Tyson Fury. So when do you know that that fight is actually going to take place? Because I know there was a lot....

00:36:57.94 – 00:36:58.28

June.

2Speaker 2
00:36:58.86 – 00:37:03.40

June, that was in June, that was in June, we locked that fight, it was concluded.

00:37:03.62 – 00:37:04.56

Everything was set.

1Speaker 1
00:37:05.72 – 00:37:11.06

So for all those months from December to June, you're essentially just trying to find where you're going to land.

2Speaker 2
00:37:11.32 – 00:37:23.58

Yeah, but before that I have I agreed the deal with the PFA, I think it was in March, but I made the request.

00:37:23.68 – 00:37:31.22

I said, let's just figure out what would be my next boxing fight before we sign the deal.

1Speaker 1
00:37:31.38 – 00:37:32.54

So you haven't signed the deal with the PFA?

2Speaker 2
00:37:32.56 – 00:37:33.50

I haven't signed the deal.

1Speaker 1
00:37:33.64 – 00:37:44.60

Is it possible? let me ask you this, OK? Is it possible that you go and fight Tyson Fury and then the UFC comes back to you and says, Listen, let's make this right and let's fight Jon Jones?

00:37:45.14 – 00:37:46.14

Is that possible?

2Speaker 2
00:37:46.94 – 00:37:48.20

It's possible, but.

00:37:48.20 – 00:37:54.98

That's where I'm at. No, it's possible, that's where I'm at, it's possible, but they have to go to the PFA now.

1Speaker 1
00:37:55.24 – 00:37:57.68

Oh, because did the PFL have a contract signed?

2Speaker 2
00:37:57.94 – 00:37:58.20

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:37:58.38 – 00:37:59.46

You did sign a contract.

2Speaker 2
00:37:59.50 – 00:38:04.58

I did sign, I said in March, it wasn't signed, right, I signed in May.

1Speaker 1
00:38:05.08 – 00:38:07.50

Do you think the PFL would allow that?

2Speaker 2
00:38:07.76 – 00:38:11.50

Oh, the PFL is down for that, really, it's down for that.

1Speaker 1
00:38:11.78 – 00:38:12.26

Wow.

2Speaker 2
00:38:13.60 – 00:38:15.34

The PFL is down for that.

1Speaker 1
00:38:15.36 – 00:38:21.30

So the PFL would let you fight in the UFC, but what happens if you beat Jon Jones and you become the UFC heavyweight champion again?

2Speaker 2
00:38:23.24 – 00:38:23.72

Uh.

1Speaker 1
00:38:25.32 – 00:38:26.18

That's a problem.

2Speaker 2
00:38:26.88 – 00:38:28.32

I don't know, ha ha ha.

00:38:29.98 – 00:38:36.78

Maybe he'll be a special fight, a special belt or something. Yeah, maybe not like a UFC belt, I don't know.

1Speaker 1
00:38:36.86 – 00:38:41.30

Yeah, the UFC probably would not be down for that. Yeah, win the title and then go fight in the PFL.

2Speaker 2
00:38:41.58 – 00:38:49.42

That would be a problem. No, not the title, but you know, to be honest, I don't worry about the title. The title is not what I worry about.

00:38:49.54 – 00:38:59.10

I worry about that fight, that challenge, yes, and I wouldn't care if it was a fight without a title, you know, so right.

00:38:59.60 – 00:39:00.30

In my.

00:39:00.30 – 00:39:03.02

I don't need a UFC title.

1Speaker 1
00:39:03.24 – 00:39:06.94

Especially with that fight, right? What difference does it make? It's Jon Jones and you.

2Speaker 2
00:39:06.94 – 00:39:11.16

No, that fight is bigger than the title. yes, bigger than the title. the fight is bigger than the title.

1Speaker 1
00:39:11.56 – 00:39:11.96

No doubt.

2Speaker 2
00:39:12.08 – 00:39:22.28

So deep inside me, I still have a little bit of hope, even though I know it's going to be hard. But you never know.

1Speaker 1
00:39:22.80 – 00:39:27.92

Boy, that would be a big gamble for them, because if you win, then you're the champ, but you're signed with the PFL.

2Speaker 2
00:39:28.34 – 00:39:30.66

Yeah, oh ha ha ha oh.

1Speaker 1
00:39:31.00 – 00:39:37.60

Okay, so June, you get the Tyson Fury bout negotiated. Did you get everything you want? Was it easy?

2Speaker 2
00:39:39.52 – 00:39:56.84

Again, you don't walk in a room for a contract to get everything that you want right? And at that moment, I was just so happy to get that fight happen, because from that fight a lot of things would be open, that fight would open a lot of doors.

00:39:57.46 – 00:40:14.20

You know, sometimes, even in the negotiations, sometimes you have to see long term, like, what it comes with. Mm-hmm. Now I get this fight. I think it should have been the focus, right?

00:40:14.62 – 00:40:24.36

Mm-hmm. After this fight, imagine, hypothetically, I go out there and knock Tyson Fury out. What do you think will happen for me? Where does that leave me?

1Speaker 1
00:40:24.54 – 00:40:29.22

If you knock Tyson Fury out, you're the biggest combat sports star in the world.

2Speaker 2
00:40:29.36 – 00:40:29.68

Okay.

1Speaker 1
00:40:30.16 – 00:40:31.14

That's what I think.

2Speaker 2
00:40:31.40 – 00:40:33.36

So is that everything that you want?

1Speaker 1
00:40:33.36 – 00:40:34.68

You want the cash.

2Speaker 2
00:40:35.62 – 00:40:39.34

Of course, you got to get the cash, then you will get everything. Yeah, then you get the cash.

1Speaker 1
00:40:39.64 – 00:40:42.28

Well, if you knock Tyson Fury out, the real money is in a rematch.

2Speaker 2
00:40:43.02 – 00:40:43.42

Exactly.

1Speaker 1
00:40:43.64 – 00:40:44.58

That's the real money.

2Speaker 2
00:40:44.78 – 00:40:47.90

That's crazy money. Hey, that's what I'm—.

1Speaker 1
00:40:47.90 – 00:40:49.76

Are they giving you crazy money for the Tyson Fury fight?

2Speaker 2
00:40:49.92 – 00:40:50.08

Huh.

1Speaker 1
00:40:50.66 – 00:40:52.62

Are they giving you crazy money for the Tyson Fury fight?

2Speaker 2
00:40:53.06 – 00:41:15.40

Yeah, they're giving me a good money, yeah, and very great condition. I like a lot of component, and again, I like a lot of component of this contract. Who was like, the thing, the treatment that they were giving me, the access, how easy they make stuff for me.

00:41:16.34 – 00:41:29.22

It's going to be the first time that my family is going to attend to my fight and I don't even have to think about that. They're going to work on it, they're going to figure out how to bring my mom, my sister, my brother out to Saudi to watch that fight.

1Speaker 1
00:41:29.34 – 00:41:31.20

Oh, okay, so they're going to take care of everything.

2Speaker 2
00:41:31.30 – 00:41:32.86

They're going to take care and I think,—.

1Speaker 1
00:41:32.86 – 00:41:34.48

The Saudis know how to throw that money around, boy.

2Speaker 2
00:41:34.50 – 00:42:08.34

And I think that's something that for me was very, very important. I think, you know, I could have had more money, but it wouldn't make me more happier than stuff like that. And you know, you kind of like work with people that you feel like, okay, they are trying their best, their very best, to make you feel comfortable, feel happy. I think that is also a partnership, you know, it's not like one shot. Okay, take everything that I can take and go.

00:42:08.74 – 00:42:19.66

How can we build something like, is it like somebody that I can trust? can we build something for the future? And then when you feel like, yes, you invest into that relationship.

1Speaker 1
00:42:20.42 – 00:42:26.06

Okay, okay, so June they negotiate the fight, is it 12 rounds?

2Speaker 2
00:42:26.84 – 00:42:27.34

Ten rounds.

1Speaker 1
00:42:27.44 – 00:42:35.72

Ten rounds, yeah, ten rounds, and they've created a new belt, right? And you're happy with the money, you're happy with the conditions.

00:42:35.94 – 00:42:43.94

You're happy with everything. So then in June is when you go hardcore boxing training, when did you start like hardcore boxing training?

2Speaker 2
00:42:44.34 – 00:42:46.90

I was training boxing already.

00:42:48.92 – 00:42:50.74

No, like I was in a camp.

1Speaker 1
00:42:50.86 – 00:42:53.20

But you're recovering from your knee surgery first of all, right?

2Speaker 2
00:42:53.22 – 00:42:53.48

Yes.

1Speaker 1
00:42:53.58 – 00:42:55.70

So you can't kick and you can't wrestle.

2Speaker 2
00:42:56.20 – 00:43:00.90

I can kick, I can wrestle, I mean, obviously, but you have to be careful, I have to be careful.

1Speaker 1
00:43:02.02 – 00:43:03.08

How is the knee now?

2Speaker 2
00:43:03.14 – 00:43:07.26

I don't have to worry about, like, kick wrestling.

1Speaker 1
00:43:07.58 – 00:43:07.84

Right?

2Speaker 2
00:43:08.12 – 00:43:15.14

Just knee, my knee is probably 90, I mean, when you get a knee surgery.

1Speaker 1
00:43:15.14 – 00:43:16.90

Did you get any stem cells or anything?

2Speaker 2
00:43:18.16 – 00:43:18.90

Not yet.

1Speaker 1
00:43:19.02 – 00:43:20.12

How long are you in town for?

2Speaker 2
00:43:20.26 – 00:43:24.80

I had a PRP, I'm leaving tonight.

1Speaker 1
00:43:25.14 – 00:43:25.72

You're leaving tonight.

2Speaker 2
00:43:25.84 – 00:43:26.00

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:43:26.46 – 00:43:30.22

There's a company in Austin ways to well that I wanted to hook you up with.

2Speaker 2
00:43:30.22 – 00:43:35.40

Ways to? Well, Yes, I get in contact with them, I even get them to do my exam.

00:43:36.04 – 00:43:42.68

And I think Eric Nixon put me in contact with them, with Brigham, he sent me a contact.

1Speaker 1
00:43:43.34 – 00:43:44.32

I can take care of that, too.

2Speaker 2
00:43:44.32 – 00:43:44.96

With Brigham.

1Speaker 1
00:43:45.04 – 00:43:46.14

Yeah, I can take care of that, too.

2Speaker 2
00:43:46.44 – 00:43:52.10

About a stem cell, if we have the time, you should do that. Yeah, I think I'm going to give it a shot.

1Speaker 1
00:43:52.76 – 00:43:53.24

For sure.

2Speaker 2
00:43:53.50 – 00:43:53.86

You know?

1Speaker 1
00:43:54.50 – 00:43:56.62

It'll help you, it definitely will.

2Speaker 2
00:43:56.82 – 00:44:04.66

It's very important to take care of, to maintain the vehicle. Yes, obviously, yeah, yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:44:04.74 – 00:44:06.22

And what a vehicle it is, yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:44:07.02 – 00:44:10.22

Basically, when you're going to put it in a big crash like this.

1Speaker 1
00:44:10.50 – 00:44:11.54

So yeah, right.

2Speaker 2
00:44:13.46 – 00:44:20.90

That's a good way to put it. Yeah, because Tyson Fury is a monster, he's a monster. I stand next to him, I'm like, Damn, this guy is big.

00:44:21.32 – 00:44:24.74

Right, he's big. I'm like, you really need to go full force.

1Speaker 1
00:44:25.30 – 00:44:28.62

Yeah, he's a big fellow and he's very good, very skillful.

2Speaker 2
00:44:28.92 – 00:44:29.42

Oh man.

1Speaker 1
00:44:29.48 – 00:44:31.36

You jump into the top of the heap, maybe ever.

2Speaker 2
00:44:31.64 – 00:44:40.90

And then I was there at the press conference next to him. I'm like, Yes, look at my fat belly, I'm a fat pig, I'm this. I'm like, Don't you fool me?

00:44:40.90 – 00:44:42.08

I have seen you.

1Speaker 1
00:44:43.08 – 00:44:44.76

He tricks people with that belly.

2Speaker 2
00:44:44.82 – 00:44:53.24

I'm like, Don't you fool me? don't you trick me, Tyson? I have seen you box, and you doesn't box as a fat anything at all, no.

1Speaker 1
00:44:54.14 – 00:44:56.84

He doesn't, No, he doesn't, he's an animal.

2Speaker 2
00:44:56.90 – 00:45:10.06

Because if you just focus on his body, then you'll be like, Oh, easy job, no man. When the guy is in the ring moving you, I'm like, Okay, is it like something that they are remoting or something? I'm like, No, don't you fool me.

00:45:10.06 – 00:45:11.04

I have seen you.

1Speaker 1
00:45:11.04 – 00:45:12.16

He's very, very skillful.

2Speaker 2
00:45:12.24 – 00:45:12.56

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:45:12.78 – 00:45:21.26

Very skillful, but, you know, you have probably the most sensational punching power I've ever seen in the heavyweight division in the UFC.

00:45:22.84 – 00:45:26.50

It's you and Derek Lewis, you're the two biggest knockout artists ever.

2Speaker 2
00:45:26.64 – 00:45:41.88

Maybe, but again, I think in the heavyweight division everybody can knock everybody out. The problem is to connect, That's the most problem, everybody hits somebody in the shin.

00:45:42.12 – 00:45:43.02

It's going down.

1Speaker 1
00:45:43.36 – 00:45:44.04

But can you connect?

2Speaker 2
00:45:44.06 – 00:46:04.92

How to connect the delivery system It's something that I heard once from Teddy Atlas, and it's taken my mind, like the delivery system. You can have the biggest missile, but if you can't hit your target, it's useless.

1Speaker 1
00:46:04.92 – 00:46:09.52

So when do you get involved with Mike Tyson? When did that start happening?

2Speaker 2
00:46:10.92 – 00:46:12.56

In training, yes.

1Speaker 1
00:46:13.46 – 00:46:16.44

Because I've seen videos of you training with Tyson, how much have you trained with him?

2Speaker 2
00:46:17.02 – 00:46:31.54

Not too much. It comes time to time, not always. He's not always with me. But if you look like four years ago, exactly four years ago, and that's when Tyson and I, we started hitting each other on social media.

00:46:31.54 – 00:46:51.74

And four years ago was the first time that I met Mike Tyson. I was on his podcast, The Hard Boxing. And one request that I initiated at that time was like, Whenever I fight Tyson Fury, would you be in my corner? And he said, Yes, that's even on my Instagram.

00:46:51.90 – 00:47:05.30

It's still on my Instagram. The next day I put that as a caption. I asked him if he would be in my corner whenever I fight Tyson Fury. And nobody believed that this could have happened. Like, Okay, cool.

00:47:05.72 – 00:47:15.08

Then what? And when I get to fight, I'm like, Bro, that thing is happening, that thing is manifesting itself. Wow.

1Speaker 1
00:47:15.76 – 00:47:22.54

And so Tyson agrees to be in your corner. And who are you training with? Mostly for boxing?

2Speaker 2
00:47:23.04 – 00:47:41.96

I'm training with Dewey, Dewey Cooper, Dewey Cooper. Yeah, I also get this guy from France named John Bumba, that I used to work with him, train my boxing with him. He's a young, very young guy, you know?

00:47:42.50 – 00:48:02.34

But I like his style, the way that his approach and stuff, and I really have a good connection with him. So what's up, I reach out. I mean, even before the fight, I was working with him, taking him in Cameroon. Get some training already.

00:48:02.54 – 00:48:07.92

Then when the fight get announced, I talk with him, then I brought him out, so he's in Vegas with me.

1Speaker 1
00:48:08.76 – 00:48:18.14

And so you started your journey in martial arts. You initially wanted to be a boxer? Yes, and then when you went to an MMA gym, they convinced you.

2Speaker 2
00:48:18.28 – 00:48:24.98

When I went to France, right? Yeah, no, he was even in a boxing gym that they convinced me to be a MMA fighter, really.

00:48:25.08 – 00:48:51.34

A guy from a boxing gym named Didier Camo, the first boxing gym that I get into, but he was also a martial artist himself. And he said, Bro, I think you have a very good potential. I think your best outcome now regarding your situation, because I was still homeless at the time, I think your best outcome would be MMA.

00:48:51.72 – 00:48:52.50

If you.

00:48:52.50 – 00:49:01.88

I'm like, What's MMA? He started to explain to me, like, you know, I'm like, Ah, OK, that sport that they do in the cage. He said, Yes.

00:49:01.94 – 00:49:17.50

I'm like, Ah, I have seen it, he said. If you train some takedown, defense and jujitsu, what is jujitsu? He started to explain. I think you're going to be a UFC champion one day. What is UFC?

1Speaker 1
00:49:17.92 – 00:49:19.30

And how old were you when this was happening?

2Speaker 2
00:49:19.68 – 00:49:20.14

27.

00:49:20.42 – 00:49:21.56

That was in 2013..

1Speaker 1
00:49:22.22 – 00:49:23.78

It's so crazy that you.

2Speaker 2
00:49:23.78 – 00:49:24.34

June 2013.

1Speaker 1
00:49:24.74 – 00:49:38.46

People don't understand that you started this journey as an MMA fighter so late in your life compared to most. Like a lot of these guys, they're training when they're 14 15 years old, they're in MMA gyms and have an amateur fight.

2Speaker 2
00:49:39.02 – 00:49:53.66

Yeah, and I forced my way into MMA and that's why, like, there was a lot of things that I didn't understand properly. I didn't learn as an athlete growing up. And until I get to a Stipe fight, the first Stipe fight.

00:49:53.78 – 00:50:16.52

Man, that Stipe fight taught me a lot about combat sports. After that fight, I was at the press conference and telling people like, I think I have learned more in this fight. Because here I've been. What? Almost just four years, four years and a half since I've been doing, not even four years and a half since I've been doing MMA. When I forced Stipe the first time.

00:50:16.94 – 00:50:29.86

Yeah, and I said, I learned this night tonight. I learned more than I have learned in the past four years in this game. And I think people didn't understand, but I meant it.

1Speaker 1
00:50:30.86 – 00:50:41.44

Well, you certainly showed it in the rematch, you certainly showed it in the rematch, and Daniel Cormier pointed it out. He said Patient, Francis, you were patient in the second fight.

00:50:41.44 – 00:50:46.24

You didn't just rush out and try to take him out in the first round. Much more dangerous.

2Speaker 2
00:50:46.46 – 00:50:53.08

Yeah, because on my previous fight before Stipe, I wasn't rushing on anybody.

1Speaker 1
00:50:53.38 – 00:50:55.12

What about Rosenstreich? You kind of rushed him.

2Speaker 2
00:50:55.50 – 00:51:03.88

That was after, Yeah, I mean, before the first fight, I wasn't rushing on anybody, I was knocking people out without rushing.

00:51:04.30 – 00:51:13.06

The mistake? The thing that I did is like, I get to the point that I really start to think about the knockout, which is something that I never thought about it. It just happened.

1Speaker 1
00:51:13.44 – 00:51:13.66

Right?

2Speaker 2
00:51:13.88 – 00:51:24.06

Then I started to think about it, so that's where I rushed. You were trying to make it happen? Yeah, I was trying to make it happen and obviously at that time there was a lot of pressure on me and everything.

00:51:24.40 – 00:51:35.58

Yeah, so I was. I feel like I have to give a result, so that's why I was rushing. So I understand that night I went back and watched that fight.

00:51:35.68 – 00:51:42.14

And I saw me fight, I'm like, Who is that guy? He just looked like me, but I don't recognize why he's rushing.

00:51:42.30 – 00:51:43.12

Why he's doing this?

00:51:44.86 – 00:51:55.38

So then I understand, I'm like, okay, maybe you just have to go back to your previous, the previous way, the previous you, and then things will be fine.

00:51:55.60 – 00:51:56.66

Then I went back to my.

1Speaker 1
00:51:56.80 – 00:52:03.96

In the rematch, not only were you the previous you, but you were a way better version of you. you were very calculated, very technical.

2Speaker 2
00:52:04.60 – 00:52:11.90

It was, it was four years, what? three years after? Yeah, so of course, I have learned.

00:52:12.14 – 00:52:27.84

I'm in the sport to learn, I know that I have a deficiency, so I pay a lot of attention. Than those people that grew up as a athlete, you know, doing different sport. I always take that very seriously, the fact that.

00:52:28.54 – 00:52:42.70

I mean, maybe sometime my power hurt me to get away with stuff. But I know that I have a deficiency, you know, as far as experience and everything, even techniques.

00:52:44.22 – 00:53:03.52

Because sometimes I hear people say, Oh yeah, he didn't train wrestling in the training camp. I'm like, bro, come on, you think two, three months training wrestling in the training camp will out wrestle somebody that's been wrestling his entire life? No, you can't, you can't just find a way to go around.

00:53:03.52 – 00:53:14.40

But, you know, so that's how that's how I process things, I think about the advantage. I always think of myself as an underdog.

1Speaker 1
00:53:14.86 – 00:53:19.20

So what did you change in your training after the first debate fight? Did you change anything?

2Speaker 2
00:53:20.88 – 00:53:36.68

First of all, I understand how to train properly, I understand how to train properly, and again, I just think about everything as a deficiency. I used to think that sometimes I'm like, Oh, yes, he has a good striking, he's a boxer.

00:53:36.88 – 00:53:51.76

He knock people out. I'm like, No, I have no good strike. Everything has to involve, you know, whether it's my striking, my wrestling, my jiu-jitsu. That's why people keep training the day that you think, like, Oh, I'm good at this.

00:53:52.30 – 00:54:17.48

That's the day that you start to go down because you can't stay in the same place like this. You're going to permanently try to go up, and even if you are not going up, that's how you can maintain your position. But if you stay comfortable with something, that's the day that you start to lose it. So I changed everything.

00:54:17.84 – 00:54:40.14

I focus on everything, like all the assets. You know, that fight really helped me a lot. I think about my diet, I think about like, discipline stuff, I mean, usually I'm good with discipline, but I still think about everything. Put everything in prospect.

00:54:40.60 – 00:54:51.98

Like, okay, is my diet okay? By the way, after the Stipe fight, I decided to cut soda out for a couple of weeks before, and since then I never drink soda.

1Speaker 1
00:54:52.60 – 00:54:53.70

You were drinking a lot before.

2Speaker 2
00:54:54.26 – 00:54:57.22

Oh, a ton, a ton.

1Speaker 1
00:54:57.34 – 00:54:58.22

Even in training camp.

2Speaker 2
00:54:58.80 – 00:55:13.62

A ton. In training camp, I was eating croissant, everything. I was like, No, I'm heavyweight. I was just focusing about my weight and not about my condition and all those aspects I didn't know.

00:55:13.98 – 00:55:20.20

You know, the night before the Stipe fight, I was in the Foko de Chao eating outdoor steak.

1Speaker 1
00:55:21.22 – 00:55:21.74

That's good.

2Speaker 2
00:55:22.60 – 00:55:22.92

Really.

1Speaker 1
00:55:22.92 – 00:55:23.98

Yeah, that's good for you.

2Speaker 2
00:55:24.18 – 00:55:27.62

Before the fight, meat Oh, no, it's not good at all.

1Speaker 1
00:55:27.66 – 00:55:28.04

Not good.

2Speaker 2
00:55:28.24 – 00:55:30.68

Not at all, I was heavy as shit.

1Speaker 1
00:55:30.98 – 00:55:36.00

Oh, you ate too much. did you eat stuff with the meat, like potatoes and rice?

2Speaker 2
00:55:36.42 – 00:55:36.94

Of course.

1Speaker 1
00:55:37.16 – 00:55:39.98

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about, that's where it is.

2Speaker 2
00:55:40.84 – 00:55:49.32

The night before, like maybe two hours or maybe one hour before I walked in the arena, I was at Foko de Chao.

1Speaker 1
00:55:49.74 – 00:55:52.18

An hour before you went to the arena, Yeah, wow.

2Speaker 2
00:55:52.18 – 00:56:04.62

No, in the arena, yeah, because I went to the arena like maybe two hours before the fight. But three hours is not enough to digest all that food, to digest all those meats and stuff.

00:56:04.86 – 00:56:05.10

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:56:05.70 – 00:56:16.24

And so in that fight, you learn all the lessons, and then you change your diet, you enhance your discipline, and you keep working on all your skills.

2Speaker 2
00:56:16.50 – 00:56:30.86

Yeah, then you know how we were talking about patience. That's how I walked into the Stipe fight, the Dirk Lewis fight with, like, constantly telling myself be patient, and I was there, just like telling myself.

00:56:31.12 – 00:56:39.76

I think I wasn't even in that fight, I was there, but I was still fighting Stipe. I was like, No, be patient, be patient, be patient.

1Speaker 1
00:56:39.78 – 00:56:45.10

You were still thinking about getting tired in that first fight, getting taken down, getting controlled.

2Speaker 2
00:56:45.24 – 00:56:47.80

Not really, I was just thinking about, like, patience.

1Speaker 1
00:56:48.52 – 00:56:49.00

Patience.

2Speaker 2
00:56:49.18 – 00:56:51.76

Just patience, but I overdid it.

1Speaker 1
00:56:51.76 – 00:56:52.28

You overdid it.

2Speaker 2
00:56:52.28 – 00:56:59.06

I overdid it and it was too much, that's how it turned out. But I was like, be patient, you get this.

1Speaker 1
00:56:59.22 – 00:56:59.66

You get this?

2Speaker 2
00:56:59.98 – 00:57:09.30

That's why, at the end of the fight, I'm like, Is it over? I was confused, I didn't know that it was even the third round.

1Speaker 1
00:57:09.88 – 00:57:10.30

Really.

2Speaker 2
00:57:10.56 – 00:57:17.44

Oh yeah, I was really messed up mentally, I didn't know. I thought I still have a round.

1Speaker 1
00:57:18.26 – 00:57:19.96

So what was that feeling like?

2Speaker 2
00:57:20.02 – 00:57:33.14

And my corner was telling me, I mean, they were telling me everything is good. Like, Okay, I think you get one round, the second round, maybe you get this, I don't know. And so I feel like everything was right.

00:57:33.60 – 00:57:37.28

So my mind was playing me really bad in that fight.

1Speaker 1
00:57:38.10 – 00:57:40.62

So what was it like when you went back and watched that fight?

2Speaker 2
00:57:42.80 – 00:57:43.78

I didn't watch.

1Speaker 1
00:57:43.78 – 00:57:45.02

You didn't watch that, yeah?

2Speaker 2
00:57:45.16 – 00:57:52.38

I feel bad, I feel like I waste a bullet, an important bullet, yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:57:52.74 – 00:57:54.40

And it sets you back.

2Speaker 2
00:57:54.76 – 00:58:10.68

Yeah, I feel very bad. And then the reaction about it, the way people react about it. You get to the point that I kind of tell myself, Okay, screw this, fuck everything, man.

00:58:13.12 – 00:58:25.56

The reason why I get into combat sport, basically MMA was because it was fun. I was never going to do MMA. I just kept training, like, Oh, it's fun, I like it, let's keep going.

00:58:26.44 – 00:58:48.64

Then I realized that that fun wasn't there anymore and that's why I was falling down. Because I start focus on about what people think, people reaction, people feelings, and then I forget the reason why I started this sport. So now I get the second fight against Curtis Blade in China, I'm like, Okay, this might be the end.

00:58:48.84 – 00:59:08.62

I don't think if I lost this fight, it's going to be good for me, but at least I earned it. How I started just by fun, just go there, enjoy yourself, have fun and don't worry about what's next. And then 45 seconds, the guy was down.

00:59:09.64 – 00:59:13.84

And then Ken Velasquez 25 seconds. The guy was down. I was just there to have fun.

00:59:15.44 – 00:59:20.00

Junior dos Santos The guy was down. I'm like, seems like having fun.

1Speaker 1
00:59:20.26 – 00:59:21.10

You found your groove again.

2Speaker 2
00:59:21.10 – 00:59:43.80

Yeah, having fun is exactly why I'm doing this, and it's why I'm good at it. Let's just do it. So I try not to put pressure on me. Every fight. I'm like, I'm going to go there. Do my best, make sure that everything that should have been done is done on my end.

00:59:44.32 – 00:59:45.84

And the rest? I don't control it.

1Speaker 1
00:59:45.90 – 00:59:47.98

Have you ever worked with a sports psychologist?

2Speaker 2
00:59:49.32 – 00:59:51.70

Man, I don't believe in that I try.

1Speaker 1
00:59:51.90 – 00:59:52.28

No.

2Speaker 2
00:59:52.88 – 01:00:05.50

No, I don't believe. I think everything is in our mind. You can go out there trying to find all those stuff, but you have it in your mind, you can speak to yourself, right?

01:00:05.62 – 01:00:17.20

You can question to yourself, I mean, I don't need a sports psychologist to tell me why I'm doing this. It's out of passion. I do this because I love it, it's not a job.

01:00:17.60 – 01:00:18.14

You understand?

1Speaker 1
01:00:18.58 – 01:00:18.82

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
01:00:18.96 – 01:00:37.16

I question myself, like, why did I get here? how come did I come from, where I came from and get here? Then I find all those reasons and then therefore I put my stuff together, right? Maybe some people do.

01:00:37.32 – 01:00:39.84

Some people clearly need people to like.

01:00:41.54 – 01:00:55.56

Help them to control their self. I see that in a lot of fighters. Basically, they need like a coach or something. Somebody to tell them what to do, like they don't know like, to tell them what time to train.

01:00:55.96 – 01:01:09.78

Like, you know, you have a fight. You schedule your training at this time, you have this and this to work on. You can schedule that and get there every day at the same time. Do your thing.

01:01:09.96 – 01:01:16.34

Go home, get ready for another day. But some people do need somebody to get them that.

1Speaker 1
01:01:16.62 – 01:01:19.50

So do you schedule all your training? Yeah, everything.

2Speaker 2
01:01:19.94 – 01:01:29.78

I schedule everything really and my team, I organize all my team, you know, mostly about people that I feel the good energy about.

01:01:30.18 – 01:01:39.40

Because, again, I don't believe in so many things I don't believe in. Like, Oh, this guy is the great, he's a great trainer, he can do this, No.

01:01:39.50 – 01:02:01.02

I believe that everything comes from a fighter and the energy that people around him can bring can help him win. So in my team, I favor people's energy, people like the energy that they bring around. You know, I favor them, and that's how I judge if somebody is best or not.

01:02:01.12 – 01:02:20.50

It's by his energy and that's how I get along with pretty much everybody of my team. I judge everybody based on his energy. If I feel like this, I'd rather have a good person next to me and then not to say my team.

01:02:20.66 – 01:02:45.12

My team is great, they are all great, everybody is very professional, committed. But if I feel like somebody has this energy and not even great as great, I prefer that person than somebody that is a great trainer. And don't bring that energy in because the energy is very important.

01:02:45.66 – 01:03:01.84

You know when you start to get tired, when you're in the tough situation. The voice that you can listen and still trust is more important than the technique that you can learn. You can't know all the techniques in the world, and if you get there, your mind is not right, you are not doing shit, yeah.

01:03:02.32 – 01:03:03.38

Yeah, yeah.

1Speaker 1
01:03:03.48 – 01:03:08.62

So the energy of the people you got, that's all down. You got a great trainer, Dewey Cooper, he's fantastic.

2Speaker 2
01:03:09.10 – 01:03:13.34

I still get Dewey Cooper, even Eric.

1Speaker 1
01:03:13.54 – 01:03:14.40

Eric Nixick.

2Speaker 2
01:03:14.44 – 01:03:17.14

Eric NiXICk Amazing, we're still here.

01:03:18.90 – 01:03:37.36

Because I remember even how we get together, he wasn't much like a coach. I was in fighting junior Docentos and I have only Dewey Cooper with Markel on my team. And I reached out, I asked Markel, like, we should bring somebody in the corner or something?

01:03:37.62 – 01:03:50.30

And he talked about Eric, and I'm like, I always meet Eric around and he's nice, and I'm like, Yes, let's try him. And then we get to the locker. Suddenly, I feel the energy was great.

01:03:50.52 – 01:03:57.72

You know, I'm like, man, this is good, I like this vibe. Yeah, in my team, that for me is enough.

01:03:58.24 – 01:04:10.74

You know, that's why, like, sometimes I understand. Once I saw Mike Perry, he went to a fight with only his wife in his corner, and then people was criticizing him. I'm like, I understand him.

01:04:11.20 – 01:04:19.60

He's doing the right thing, he understand how the games work. He just want a voice that can speak to him when he's tired, somebody that he trusts, right?

01:04:19.66 – 01:04:21.48

And all the stuff and everything.

1Speaker 1
01:04:21.60 – 01:04:22.54

He already knows how to fight.

2Speaker 2
01:04:22.64 – 01:04:31.60

Yeah, he knows how to fight. Yeah, because nobody is going to raise your hand and punch on somebody's head, or like, nobody is going to dodge a punch for you.

01:04:32.02 – 01:04:41.30

Nobody going to say, Oh, knock him out now, you know, right? It's just it's fighting game, is mental, more mental, and improvisation.

01:04:41.54 – 01:04:41.82

M.M.

1Speaker 1
01:04:42.64 – 01:04:51.90

So you schedule everything, you schedule your strength and conditioning, you schedule your sparring, you schedule everything. You just do it all based on how you feel and what you need to get done.

2Speaker 2
01:04:53.58 – 01:05:03.20

Um, no, like I schedule, I mean, I get strength and conditioning, for example, for this camp, I get Tripp Hall, he's out here with me.

01:05:03.68 – 01:05:12.26

So we talk about the goal, what is the goal, what is the deficiency, what do we want, where do we want to get by the fight?

01:05:12.92 – 01:05:26.26

We are 12 weeks out, okay, what is what we want to work on and what would be the good space? Then we get that schedule then with the boxing team we speak around.

01:05:26.52 – 01:05:42.50

But I always try to get my team together, so sometimes they can just work together. They don't always need to come to me on staff, you know, my team can communicate together, also on my schedule. But yes.

1Speaker 1
01:05:43.46 – 01:05:56.38

So when you train, you do strength and conditioning. Are you using a heart rate monitor? are you paying attention to your resting heart rate? what it's like when you wake up, your heart rate variability? Do you get involved in any of those things?

2Speaker 2
01:05:57.34 – 01:06:03.36

Sometimes, not always. Sometimes I even do the test to see where I am at.

1Speaker 1
01:06:03.76 – 01:06:04.18

VO2 Max.

2Speaker 2
01:06:04.32 – 01:06:21.08

Yeah, yeah, even the VO2 Max. But we focus on, I think, the most important thing for me right now, my injuries. it's all about my injuries.

1Speaker 1
01:06:22.12 – 01:06:24.02

Do you have other injuries other than your knee?

2Speaker 2
01:06:25.48 – 01:06:36.26

Injury No, I mean, you get sore, you get. If you get to a training camp to the end without pain somewhere, then you better worry.

1Speaker 1
01:06:37.26 – 01:06:38.66

You probably didn't do enough.

2Speaker 2
01:06:38.80 – 01:06:45.58

Yeah, you probably didn't do it right. Yeah, so that's the thing. That's the reality of the sport, that's the reality of the sport.

01:06:45.84 – 01:06:56.46

You can train hard for three months and feel great every day and don't feel like something's wrong, right? No, that means you're not doing something right.

1Speaker 1
01:06:57.12 – 01:07:04.86

Is it easier to train for boxing because you don't have to do the wrestling, you don't have to do the kicking? Is it less likely that you get injured?

2Speaker 2
01:07:06.00 – 01:07:30.42

Sometimes you think so, but when you get there, it's different, you know? In the first two weeks, it wasn't even a training camp, it was a pre-camp. My first two weeks in boxing, straight boxing, I felt different. Of course, you get excited because, oh, you're not going to kick or take down or this.

01:07:30.52 – 01:07:55.88

It's just boxing. Oh, you're not going to. You don't risk injury for your knee, and that because now I always think about my knee. Then you get there, you start to hit mid-hit parts, do all those stuff, always your hands up, and then your shoulders start to hurt. Then you throw more punches in two weeks than you have ever thrown in a training camp in the two-month, two, three-month training camp.

01:07:56.28 – 01:08:15.96

Then I'm like, Ah, there is a difference, you know, your shoulder feels different. It's not the same thing in MMA. You throw one, two kick, one, two, three kick one. Take down daily boxing, wrestling, cage wrestling, all those stuff. Now in boxing, your hands have to go all the time.

01:08:16.12 – 01:08:24.10

When he's not going, he has to be on your face, protecting your face, otherwise you're going to eat that punch, clearly.

1Speaker 1
01:08:24.10 – 01:08:38.34

Yeah, so when you prepare for a fight like this, you've never had a big professional boxing fight before. And this is the biggest of all time. I mean, you're literally fighting the greatest heavyweight of all time.

2Speaker 2
01:08:38.54 – 01:08:38.72

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
01:08:39.64 – 01:08:46.06

How do you know when to peak? How do you know when you're ready because you haven't done this kind of training before?

2Speaker 2
01:08:48.44 – 01:09:07.34

You will never be ready, even at a fight night. You will always think like, Oh, if I have this, maybe I should have done this instead, maybe this would have hurt me. You know, when is the good time you have to go? So you just have to make sure to get there in your best, you know?

1Speaker 1
01:09:07.42 – 01:09:08.10

The best you can do.

2Speaker 2
01:09:08.14 – 01:09:16.94

The best you can do without burnout, because there's also a balance in between, because if you overdo, then you burn out by the time you get to a fight.

1Speaker 1
01:09:16.94 – 01:09:44.50

That's why I was asking about heart rate monitors and checking your resting heart rate and heart rate variability. Because one of the best ways to find out if you are overtrained is to check your resting heart rate. When you wake up first thing in the morning, and if it's up 8 beats a minute, 10 beats a minute, most likely you went too hard. And then they'd suggest, like an active recovery day, a lighter training day. Where you're still moving, you're still working on technique, but you're not pushing, you're not really pushing.

2Speaker 2
01:09:44.50 – 01:10:09.16

And even when your heart rate monitor indicates that, I used to use the Aurawatch, and it almost indicates how you feel, you feel it right. And then when you have a good team, they can also measure the mass of your training and they can also work around it.

01:10:09.50 – 01:10:30.28

They know, okay, Monday and Tuesday we went hard on this, Wednesday has to be slow on this. You know, maybe work on technique or like, on the strength on this and that, all those aspects. And that's why a team is very good about, because you can, like by yourself, think about everything.

1Speaker 1
01:10:31.30 – 01:10:32.36

Now you need other people.

2Speaker 2
01:10:32.42 – 01:10:44.96

Yeah, you need other people to help you because things get so big, you need other people to help you. And everybody is kind of like, he has his own department to worry about.

1Speaker 1
01:10:47.04 – 01:10:51.66

And so when you're training, how much sparring are you doing? how many days a week?

2Speaker 2
01:10:54.30 – 01:11:20.58

Three or two. Sometimes it depends again how you feel and how the recovery been. How was the sparring? You know, sometimes you get sparring and you feel like, yeah, even though you did the amount of rounds that you're supposed to do. But it wasn't that intense. And this then the next day, no, maybe you keep you push again, you know?

01:11:21.02 – 01:11:44.36

And sometimes you just go to a sparring and that one is hard, the guy gives you a hard time. You push, the pace is high and then next day maybe you need to recovery, not like recovery, but slow it down. Give your shoulder some rest because you always end up on maybe heavy bags. Like, it's all about that balance.

01:11:44.88 – 01:11:47.10

But it's like, two, three, two, three a week.

1Speaker 1
01:11:47.36 – 01:11:50.10

And are you sparring with any world-class heavyweights?

2Speaker 2
01:11:53.42 – 01:12:21.74

World-class So far? No, the only guy that I used to spar with, which is a world-class heavyweight, is Carlos Takam. And he's now just coming in the training camp because he's also going to fight on the court. Yeah, which is a world-class and we're going to get. We were talking about some guy that will bring in, like experienced fighters, boxers to spar.
