Each week, we will break down an episode of The Office and give exclusive behind the scenes stories that only two people who were there can tell you.

1Speaker 1
00:01:24.28 – 00:01:25.16

We're the office ladies.

2Speaker 2
00:01:28.84 – 00:01:30.72

Hello, hi there.

1Speaker 1
00:01:31.30 – 00:01:32.96

Dun dun da dun.

2Speaker 2
00:01:33.36 – 00:01:35.26

Dun dun da dun.

1Speaker 1
00:01:35.82 – 00:01:38.46

It is Roy's wedding.

2Speaker 2
00:01:39.00 – 00:01:42.82

I mean, it's a beautiful wedding, so beautiful.

1Speaker 1
00:01:43.76 – 00:01:48.36

Roy and Laura are getting married in a beautiful backyard garden, I know.

2Speaker 2
00:01:48.54 – 00:01:52.22

There's piano playing, we'll get champagne, champagne.

1Speaker 1
00:01:52.38 – 00:02:07.12

It is season nine, episode two, Roy's Wedding, written by Alison Silverman and directed by Matt Sohn. Here's your summary. Pam and Jim attend Roy's wedding. Yeah, and there are so many surprises.

00:02:07.60 – 00:02:20.98

Yeah, so many things they didn't know about Roy and his growth. And it gets them to wonder, Do we know everything about one another? Or is maybe Jim keeping a giant secret from Pam?

2Speaker 2
00:02:21.16 – 00:02:21.68

Uh-oh.

1Speaker 1
00:02:22.22 – 00:02:27.48

Meanwhile, in this episode, Clark schemes to get Aaron alone in his apartment.

2Speaker 2
00:02:27.90 – 00:02:30.44

Clark's gonna be a creeper y'all, he sure is.

1Speaker 1
00:02:30.60 – 00:02:43.92

And Nellie is gonna use an unusual tactic to get Dwight to cooperate in her charity special project. But before we get to all of that, we have a very special treat today.

2Speaker 2
00:02:44.10 – 00:02:47.84

Yeah, Jenna is super excited because it means no fast facts.

1Speaker 1
00:02:47.96 – 00:02:57.86

Yes, Angela, you know me very well, that's right. Today, there are no fast facts. Today, our top of show is an interview with Tim Meadows.

2Speaker 2
00:02:58.88 – 00:03:13.32

We were so excited to have Tim, our regular office ladies. Listeners, you might remember a while back, Tim shared some tidbits with us when we broke down the episode. The client, but we were thrilled to have him on the podcast in person. We did a Zoom.

00:03:13.90 – 00:03:17.40

He talked about his time on the show and we get to catch up with him.

1Speaker 1
00:03:17.62 – 00:03:30.02

Yes, Tim and I are also both in the new Mean Girls movie, which comes out this Friday, January 12th. We talk all about it, we talk about his time in the office and lots of other stuff. We had so much fun.

2Speaker 2
00:03:30.24 – 00:03:33.56

We did, we got so tickled, we laughed so hard, we were all crying.

1Speaker 1
00:03:33.96 – 00:03:41.12

I think there might be some pauses in this interview, where you just hear three people silent laughing. Get ready for it.

2Speaker 2
00:03:41.24 – 00:03:42.10

Here it is.

00:03:44.82 – 00:03:46.44

Oh my gosh, look, who's here?

?Unknown Speaker
00:03:46.52 – 00:03:48.02

It's Tim Hi.

3Speaker 3
00:03:48.32 – 00:03:50.68

Hi, hello, everyone, hello.

2Speaker 2
00:03:51.72 – 00:03:57.46

We are so excited to have you here with us and you're gonna talk a little bit about your time on the office.

1Speaker 1
00:03:57.46 – 00:04:12.02

And your new movie with Jenna mean girls? Let's start with the office, Tim. We always ask people how they got their job on the office. And you originally, you were offered the role and you turned it down, right?

3Speaker 3
00:04:12.34 – 00:04:22.80

Yes, that is true. I wouldn't say turned it down. I didn't turn it down to Greg and Michael Schur, I turned it down to my manager, like.

00:04:22.80 – 00:04:33.08

He called and said, like, Oh, we got this offer for this episode, and I was like, No, I don't know. I don't know if I should do it or not, cause I actually was, you know, honestly, I was hoping to get paid more.

1Speaker 1
00:04:35.04 – 00:04:36.38

We had no money.

2Speaker 2
00:04:36.62 – 00:04:37.68

It was in the very beginning, there was no money.

3Speaker 3
00:04:38.04 – 00:05:00.02

It was the second season, I think, early in the second season, and NBC was not, you know, they were like, not into paying me more money. And so I passed. And I just told my agent, right? And then my manager's assistant called me back on his personal phone and said, I really think you should do this.

00:05:00.16 – 00:05:17.36

And I don't make these kinds of calls all the time. But I think that this is like one of those comedies that everybody in the industry watches. And I think you should do it. And I knew Steven and I knew some of the other people involved in the show too. So I was just like, Okay, yeah, I'll do it. But it would have been nice if they came back and begged me.

00:05:17.36 – 00:05:23.76

To have Michael Schur come back and go, Hey Tim, come on, please do the show. But that never happened.

1Speaker 1
00:05:25.72 – 00:05:34.76

Well, you know, Tim, you were our very first quote unquote stunt casting. you were our first name actor to come on the show. It was a big thing.

2Speaker 2
00:05:35.10 – 00:05:36.60

It was a big buzz.

1Speaker 1
00:05:37.50 – 00:05:37.98

Yes.

3Speaker 3
00:05:39.20 – 00:06:01.10

I do remember I was very flattered, actually, because I'd say almost everybody in the cast came by. Because we weren't on the regular office set, we were at the Chili set. And I think I kind of remember a lot of people coming by to say hello, because I was there and I was pretty impressed by that. God, I wish I'd have taken pictures and stuff like we do now, you know?

1Speaker 1
00:06:01.38 – 00:06:01.60

Right?

2Speaker 2
00:06:01.82 – 00:06:02.68

I know, I know.

3Speaker 3
00:06:02.80 – 00:06:04.14

I didn't do any of that.

2Speaker 2
00:06:04.44 – 00:06:19.80

There's fantastic bloopers from that day, too, for folks that get the DVDs. I mean, when you come in and sing, I know you're scripted to come in at the end of the line, you know? But when you start singing that, I want my baby back, baby back, baby back. And then Steve comes in.

1Speaker 1
00:06:20.66 – 00:06:22.54

Chili's it's so great.

2Speaker 2
00:06:22.74 – 00:06:32.06

And we had Melora on the podcast, and there she is seated between the two of you. And she said it was like, one of the hardest things she's ever had to do is not laugh.

3Speaker 3
00:06:32.60 – 00:06:48.66

Yeah, in the very beginning, I remember we were trying to do it and Steven was going like, he would start going, I want my baby back, baby back. And then I would join in with him. And then he would start singing it, but I would lose the beat and he would go, No, no, no, do it again.

00:06:48.72 – 00:07:05.02

Do it again. And I was like, I don't, it's a commercial, I can't, I don't know how to sing a commercial, you know? It was really fun, cause we started laughing at the absurdity of two grown men singing that song at the Chili's.

00:07:05.04 – 00:07:24.04

Like, I was laughing at that alone, I thought it was so funny. And then these two guys are somewhat like each other. You know, like you expected Christian to be this kind of like, you know, city worker dude. But then, you know, he had all of these like private issues that came out during lunch, you know, like his mother being ill and stuff like that.

2Speaker 2
00:07:25.58 – 00:07:28.68

Yeah, he overshared, just the way Michael overshares.

3Speaker 3
00:07:29.32 – 00:07:31.00

Yes, yes, yes, yes.

1Speaker 1
00:07:32.10 – 00:07:36.20

Was it just one day of work? Did you guys get it all in one day?

3Speaker 3
00:07:36.62 – 00:07:37.92

I think it was actually.

1Speaker 1
00:07:38.30 – 00:07:39.26

What an epic day.

3Speaker 3
00:07:39.92 – 00:07:49.38

Yeah, we worked all day and we ended up shooting that night thing where we're getting in the car saying goodbye, so we were there all day, I remember.

00:07:49.38 – 00:08:08.50

At the end, Correll improvised. I don't think they use it on the show, but he went, Thanks a lot, Christian. And tell your mother good luck with her leg or something like that. Cause I said my mother, like, I was doing one of the improv things. I said my mother lost her leg from diabetes or something like that.

00:08:08.50 – 00:08:17.44

But I managed to push on through. And so during one of the improvs, when he was leaving, he goes, Tell your mother good luck with her leg.

2Speaker 2
00:08:18.24 – 00:08:30.94

You know what? We should remind folks that you and Steve had done Second City together right in Chicago. And so you had definitely a shorthand with one another when it came to improv. And it was so fun to watch.

3Speaker 3
00:08:31.84 – 00:08:52.84

Yeah, he's really fun to improvise with, and I had known him for a long time, but like our improv paths, we all started at the same time there. But then I sort of, like, jumped ahead of people a little bit. Cause I got hired for the main stage cast at Second City and then he came in after I got hired.

00:08:53.06 – 00:09:18.54

He was hired at the main stage after I went on to Saturday Night Live, but Nancy, his wife, also was hired at SNL. So we all, you know, still sort of kept in touch during those years. But the most fun, though. I don't know if he's mentioned this. But we did this gig in D.C. a long time ago with Second City. And it was Carell, his wife, Nancy, myself. John Glazer, Teresa Rosenthal.

2Speaker 2
00:09:18.98 – 00:09:19.82

Oh yeah.

3Speaker 3
00:09:20.62 – 00:09:33.82

And Adam McKay, David Koechner. We did a second City show that those guys had written in Chicago. But then we did this improv set. And it was at the Kennedy Center during the summer for like, six weeks.

1Speaker 1
00:09:33.94 – 00:09:34.44

Wow.

3Speaker 3
00:09:34.44 – 00:09:56.08

And we did this thing where we had an improv set after every show. And I tell everybody they ask, who's best improv group you were? It was that group of people. We were the best improv group that I had worked with. Like, you know, doing long form improv and stuff. And the audience they had not seen it before.

00:09:56.38 – 00:10:05.90

So their minds were blown, they couldn't believe they were like, you made that up, you just made that up. We're like, Yeah, we've been doing this for a long time.

2Speaker 2
00:10:06.32 – 00:10:06.90

That's right.

3Speaker 3
00:10:07.64 – 00:10:10.54

Yeah, it was cool, those guys are great, it was really great.

2Speaker 2
00:10:10.92 – 00:10:15.36

Oh man, I wish I could go back and watch that. I'm such a geek for improv.

1Speaker 1
00:10:16.50 – 00:10:33.50

Yeah, this kind of leads me into my next question, which was that we were kind of part of the same NBC family at the same time. The cast of the office, the cast of SNL. We would hang out a lot together, we would have to do these NBC Press events. Our lives are all completely different now.

00:10:33.50 – 00:10:44.70

We're not on TV every week anymore. And I was just going to say, if there was a moment that you could go back and relive, what would it be? Would it be the Kennedy Center improv show?

3Speaker 3
00:10:45.60 – 00:10:52.26

Wow, moment to go back and relive. I think the moment that I love it has a bunch.

2Speaker 2
00:10:53.04 – 00:10:54.74

Yeah, that's a tough question, Jenna.

3Speaker 3
00:10:54.88 – 00:11:31.52

That's a tough one, but I got to say, maybe. When Lauren flew me out to New York and I was just a guest, Tom Hanks was the host. And they did the Five Timers club for the first time. And I was in the office with Lauren during my meeting. And then he asked me to read one of the parts in the Five Timers sketch in his office. With Paul Simon, Conan O'Brien, John Lovitz, Ralph Nader. And I was this nerd from Chicago who would? It was insane to me.

00:11:31.52 – 00:12:02.48

And then Steve Martin was there too, and I was a huge Steve and still am a huge Steve Martin fan. And I think, in hindsight, I think Lauren was sort of testing me to see if I could handle being around famous people and stuff. But I just remember that whole week that I was there as just being like this magical thing. Where I was still in my old life, but my new life was taking me into this new place.

2Speaker 2
00:12:04.04 – 00:12:05.48

Oh, I love that.

3Speaker 3
00:12:05.76 – 00:12:27.72

It was really great, it was that moment of just like Holy Cow. And I used to always think, I don't know about you guys. But when I was on the show, there would be weeks in the first three or four weeks that I was there. I thought somebody from security was gonna come up during the rewrite meetings and say that dude shouldn't be here. He was a manager of a record store about two years ago.

00:12:28.52 – 00:12:31.74

He shouldn't be at the writing table at SNL. Arrest him.

2Speaker 2
00:12:32.30 – 00:12:49.28

Yeah, you know, me and Brian and Oscar over there. In the accounting department, we had a running joke for years where we're like any one of us could go at any time. Like they don't need three accountants. It's even a joke in the show we could be replaced.

3Speaker 3
00:12:50.02 – 00:12:52.12

But I love that is a big accounting department.

1Speaker 1
00:12:52.38 – 00:12:53.14

Yeah, it is.

2Speaker 2
00:12:54.00 – 00:13:09.38

I love so much just what you said about the moment where your old life and new life are kind of intersecting. It's so true, it's kind of a surreal moment where you feel this passage of, like, Oh, my God. But then you go back to your job, it's just, yeah.

3Speaker 3
00:13:09.60 – 00:13:20.46

Well, it was funny because I was like, in the process of making the most money I'd ever made in my life up to that point. And I was also broke and in debt.

2Speaker 2
00:13:21.00 – 00:13:22.82

Yeah, you know what I mean?

3Speaker 3
00:13:22.82 – 00:13:35.36

Within a week, I would have cleared out my debt, I would have been out of. You know what? I mean, my first check from SNL would have made everything cool, and then the next check would have put me over. You know what I'm saying, yeah.

00:13:35.52 – 00:13:38.72

But yeah, I was broke and had money at the same time.

2Speaker 2
00:13:39.32 – 00:13:48.92

Well, I would love to talk to you guys a little bit about your new movie, Mean Girls. And I got to see the long, extended trailer, it looks so fun.

1Speaker 1
00:13:49.56 – 00:13:59.54

Yeah, Tim, you are reprising your role of Principal Duvall. I play Katie's mom, Ms. Heron. By the way. Does Principal Duvall have a first name?

3Speaker 3
00:14:00.26 – 00:14:05.54

Ooh, that's a good question, I don't think he does, I don't know.

1Speaker 1
00:14:06.20 – 00:14:20.18

I noticed and busy. Phillips is in the movie as well and I was talking to her about it. All of the adults are just like Ms or Mr. And then a last name. They did not bother to give the adults first names.

00:14:20.34 – 00:14:31.26

So in my dorky actor Prep, I did name Ms. Heron Laura, so that's just my own personal backstory. I didn't know.

2Speaker 2
00:14:31.60 – 00:14:33.90

Does Tina Fey know that you named your character Laura?

1Speaker 1
00:14:34.64 – 00:14:44.68

Yes, I told her on set, Yes, so I didn't know if Principal Duvall had a first name or if you had considered one for him.

3Speaker 3
00:14:45.30 – 00:15:05.48

I had not considered one, but you know what I should look at, maybe the old movie or the commercial? Because I know that there was like, there were diplomas on my wall behind me. Oh yeah, so I could probably see. My guess is it was probably Anthony because there was a play on Anthony in the first movie.

00:15:05.64 – 00:15:07.10

I hated my nephew's name.

2Speaker 2
00:15:07.36 – 00:15:08.42

Yeah, I remember.

3Speaker 3
00:15:09.64 – 00:15:11.66

Yeah, he hated that his name was Anthony.

2Speaker 2
00:15:12.20 – 00:15:16.92

Oh, that's a good background catch, though. We'll have to go look and see if we can zoom in on your diploma.

3Speaker 3
00:15:17.54 – 00:15:49.86

Yeah, and I will say too, this is my maybe fourth time playing a teacher or educator with the same type of costuming tie and sweater vest. Goldberg's I did it for 10 years, Mean Girls, the first movie, the new Mean Girls, and then School, the spinoff from Goldberg's. I played the principal, and now I'm in a new movie called Dream Scenario with Nicolas Cage, and I play a dean of the college.

2Speaker 2
00:15:50.10 – 00:15:52.52

You were meant to be an education.

3Speaker 3
00:15:54.16 – 00:16:00.72

Creative people only see me as their teacher or something, it's crazy.

2Speaker 2
00:16:01.20 – 00:16:07.12

Do you remember your character's occupation on the pilot? We did the Gabriels. Oh, were you a teacher?

3Speaker 3
00:16:08.04 – 00:16:10.04

He may have been a teacher, I think you were.

?Unknown Speaker
00:16:10.18 – 00:16:11.68

As you were saying that, I was like.

3Speaker 3
00:16:11.68 – 00:16:43.66

What? I think he was a teacher, I think he was a teacher, oh my God. And I even told my agent and manager at one point I was like, I can't do any more teaching. Because I kept getting other requests for roles. Even just in episodic things, where it was like, yeah, he's the principal of the and it's a meeting with him in the PTA. And I'm like, I can't keep doing this because people are going to think. It's kind of like, connection between the things that I've, other shows that I've done, or that I'm not very versatile, you know?

00:16:44.78 – 00:16:48.30

So, either way, no more funny principals after dream scenario.

1Speaker 1
00:16:48.38 – 00:16:50.12

It ends here, this is it.

3Speaker 3
00:16:50.20 – 00:16:53.66

That's it. 2024 is the end of the principal roles.

2Speaker 2
00:16:54.56 – 00:16:58.38

Don't call Tim Meadows you heard it here anymore.

3Speaker 3
00:16:58.82 – 00:17:07.18

For teacher roles, I don't play tutors, I don't play teachers, I don't play instructors. Nothing where I'm giving information to people.

1Speaker 1
00:17:09.76 – 00:17:18.32

So we should share with people that this version of Mean girls has some musical numbers. Do you sing or dance in the movie? Because I don't.

3Speaker 3
00:17:18.70 – 00:17:22.42

Ah, I was hoping you did, because I would love to see that.

2Speaker 2
00:17:22.70 – 00:17:28.64

She would have loved to dance. She tap dances. I can't believe you don't tap dance in this movie, Jenna.

1Speaker 1
00:17:28.92 – 00:17:37.82

I tried when I was on set, I pulled the choreographer aside, we did some tap dancing. I thought, maybe I could, I know, maybe Ms.

00:17:37.92 – 00:17:40.94

Heron has a tap number. It didn't happen.

3Speaker 3
00:17:41.36 – 00:17:43.52

The sound guy hated that moment, too.

00:17:45.36 – 00:17:47.68

He's like, What's all that noise over there?

2Speaker 2
00:17:48.04 – 00:17:50.80

Jenna Fisher Tap Dancing by Crab Services.

3Speaker 3
00:17:51.54 – 00:17:58.68

Again, here she goes, Actually, I do sing you do. I do yes. Oh, that's so exciting.

00:17:59.38 – 00:18:01.04

You know, we only had one day.

1Speaker 1
00:18:01.04 – 00:18:03.20

Where we overlapped filming on this movie.

3Speaker 3
00:18:03.72 – 00:18:04.10

Yes.

1Speaker 1
00:18:04.10 – 00:18:08.92

And I didn't see you sing that day, but oh, I'm very excited to see this now.

3Speaker 3
00:18:09.70 – 00:18:22.08

Yeah, I actually, they had me come in and redo it recently. Because obviously when I did it live, I was flat or something. I don't know what they call it, flat or sharp. I was one of those things.

00:18:23.68 – 00:18:30.22

So I came in and they were like, doing that thing of, like, hit it with this note here, here is your note, I'm up here.

2Speaker 2
00:18:30.74 – 00:18:32.28

Yes, you're down here.

3Speaker 3
00:18:32.28 – 00:18:33.60

You're down here.

1Speaker 1
00:18:34.22 – 00:18:37.90

Well, Tim, you know, we were in Walk Hard together, too.

3Speaker 3
00:18:38.44 – 00:18:43.40

Yes, my favorite, Let me tell you something. Yes, that is the most quoted movie to me.

1Speaker 1
00:18:43.70 – 00:18:56.76

It's an amazing movie, it is one of my, maybe my favorite movie I've ever been in. I haven't seen Mean girls yet, okay so, but I absolutely loved making Walk hard and I love the movie.

3Speaker 3
00:18:57.00 – 00:18:58.18

We had so much fun.

1Speaker 1
00:18:58.50 – 00:18:59.68

We had so much fun.

2Speaker 2
00:18:59.68 – 00:19:01.36

What's the quote you get from that movie?

3Speaker 3
00:19:01.92 – 00:19:14.60

For me, it's you don't want no part of this, the drugs, Dewey, you want no part of this, yeah, and then the weed, whole weed run of all the drug runs. People will say to me, you know, it's not habit forming.

00:19:15.14 – 00:19:25.68

I think I want to try it. You don't want no part of this, Dewey. It takes all of your bad feelings and make them good. No, I do really want to try. You don't want no part of this, Dewey.

00:19:26.72 – 00:19:33.40

But I get that a lot people love, and the thing is that musicians also are big fans of that movie.

1Speaker 1
00:19:34.00 – 00:19:39.94

I've had numerous musicians tell me that they just keep it on a loop on their tour buses and they quote it.

3Speaker 3
00:19:40.40 – 00:19:50.00

That movie, I always tell people, was the most fun of all the things I've done. That movie was 30 days, whatever of, just like we had fun.

1Speaker 1
00:19:50.38 – 00:19:51.28

Laughed so hard.

3Speaker 3
00:19:51.90 – 00:19:53.28

Chris Parnell and Matt Besser.

2Speaker 2
00:19:53.30 – 00:19:54.40

Oh my gosh, Chris Parnell.

3Speaker 3
00:19:54.40 – 00:20:08.44

With those guys, too. And I had known Matt Besser forever and had never really hung out with him that much. And then we became really good friends. Even now, we're, like, way closer than we've ever been, and Chris Parnell, we're less friends.

2Speaker 2
00:20:10.08 – 00:20:11.00

Screw that guy.

3Speaker 3
00:20:11.22 – 00:20:12.26

We're less friends than we were.

1Speaker 1
00:20:12.26 – 00:20:13.58

Chris, reach out to Tim.

3Speaker 3
00:20:14.32 – 00:20:21.00

I don't know. Our birthdays are on the same day, so every year we text each other, we call each other Mr. like Mr. Parnell.

2Speaker 2
00:20:21.64 – 00:20:27.04

Busy Phillips and I have the same birthday. we do a similar thing. Oh wow, we always text each other on our birthdays.

1Speaker 1
00:20:27.58 – 00:20:29.64

That's sweet. Bryan Cranston and I have the same birthday.

2Speaker 2
00:20:29.64 – 00:20:30.74

Do you text each other?

1Speaker 1
00:20:30.88 – 00:20:31.96

No, we don't communicate.

3Speaker 3
00:20:32.44 – 00:20:34.12

Come on, Bryan, step up.

2Speaker 2
00:20:34.62 – 00:20:42.32

BrYan This is the year, no more educational roles for Tim, and this year you're texting Bryan. JEnna. Okay, that sounds good.

1Speaker 1
00:20:43.32 – 00:20:57.02

Well, you know, Tim, on Walk Hard. They had me take singing lessons and they had me record my voice. And then the director, Jake Kasdan, came up to me a few weeks later and he was like, You know what, Jenna, you're a fantastic actress.

2Speaker 2
00:20:57.40 – 00:20:57.82

Uh-oh.

1Speaker 1
00:20:57.82 – 00:21:06.54

And you're so funny in the film, but we're gonna go ahead and just replace your voice with the woman who did the practice track.

00:21:10.08 – 00:21:12.00

But great, great effort.

3Speaker 3
00:21:13.68 – 00:21:16.96

We're still gonna use your face. Yeah, don't get me wrong now.

1Speaker 1
00:21:17.04 – 00:21:20.02

Your lip syncing is really strong.

00:21:21.70 – 00:21:28.38

But so maybe the mean girls people heard, and that's why I'm just hearing the whole thing.

3Speaker 3
00:21:28.50 – 00:21:35.42

I don't know, it was the most awkward conversation. Oh, that's so funny.

00:21:36.96 – 00:21:43.66

Jake was sleeping in his bed one day and it was like, Hello, hi, mean girls people, why didn't you tell us?

00:21:45.50 – 00:21:50.28

She's terrible, she's horrible. I am in a couple of musical numbers in Mean Girls.

1Speaker 1
00:21:50.80 – 00:21:59.92

Which was in the real one. Yeah, I'm very excited about it because they're all dancing or singing around me, so I got to observe it.

3Speaker 3
00:22:00.60 – 00:22:02.02

And they're like, stay out of this.

1Speaker 1
00:22:02.36 – 00:22:04.66

They're like, just stand there.

2Speaker 2
00:22:05.06 – 00:22:07.60

Please, just stand on your mark, please.

3Speaker 3
00:22:08.44 – 00:22:11.98

Will you please stand there and watch us be talented? Yes.

1Speaker 1
00:22:14.30 – 00:22:16.04

I mean, amazing.

2Speaker 2
00:22:16.70 – 00:22:32.22

Here's my moment. I had to sing Little Drummer Boy in front of the whole bullpen of the office. I remember that Harold Ramis was directing and I kept losing the tune. He came up and he was like, It's little drummer boy.

?Unknown Speaker
00:22:36.52 – 00:22:38.60

He didn't say it, he was so kind.

2Speaker 2
00:22:38.70 – 00:22:42.64

But he implied, like, how can you lose the beat on little drummer boy?

3Speaker 3
00:22:43.60 – 00:22:46.24

Ba-rum-ba-bum-bum, that's it, I don't know what else you-.

2Speaker 2
00:22:46.34 – 00:22:51.56

That's it. But I told him I was like, Harold, I can't do this, I can't sing, and he's like, But you will.

3Speaker 3
00:22:52.14 – 00:22:59.16

And I was like, Oh Lord, the syncopation is in the lyrics. Okay, do you understand? the syncopation is in the lyrics?

2Speaker 2
00:23:00.06 – 00:23:02.38

I know it was like, so embarrassing.

1Speaker 1
00:23:03.32 – 00:23:06.26

You guys, should the three of us do a musical? a musical?

3Speaker 3
00:23:07.02 – 00:23:08.26

It would be the three of us.

1Speaker 1
00:23:08.80 – 00:23:10.52

Like Tim, you will shine.

2Speaker 2
00:23:10.92 – 00:23:11.72

You will shine.

1Speaker 1
00:23:12.10 – 00:23:14.36

In our three-person musical, You Will Be the Star.

3Speaker 3
00:23:14.36 – 00:23:15.18

I would stand out.

1Speaker 1
00:23:15.34 – 00:23:15.72

You will.

3Speaker 3
00:23:15.76 – 00:23:17.20

I would stand out, finally.

2Speaker 2
00:23:17.58 – 00:23:19.00

It will be fantastic.

1Speaker 1
00:23:19.00 – 00:23:25.88

Unfortunately, though, I started kind of pitching on it. And you will need to play a teacher.

3Speaker 3
00:23:25.98 – 00:23:26.54

A teacher?

1Speaker 1
00:23:28.22 – 00:23:29.92

It's an eighth grade teacher.

3Speaker 3
00:23:30.28 – 00:23:33.50

If I can sing and play a teacher, forget it.

2Speaker 2
00:23:33.80 – 00:23:37.42

I'm in okay. Did we mention there's not a lot of money, but-.

3Speaker 3
00:23:39.20 – 00:23:40.22

It doesn't matter.

2Speaker 2
00:23:40.46 – 00:23:41.62

It doesn't matter for the art.

3Speaker 3
00:23:41.64 – 00:23:43.26

It doesn't matter, yeah, for the art.

2Speaker 2
00:23:43.96 – 00:23:47.04

Tim, This was so fun. thank you so much. You guys killed me.

1Speaker 1
00:23:48.02 – 00:23:50.66

Thanks for coming on office ladies, yeah.

3Speaker 3
00:23:50.90 – 00:24:09.30

Oh, it's my pleasure. Well, you know, I listened to the show, obviously, but when you were on the set, you told me to listen. Because Stephen, he said something nice about me and it was very nice. And I played it for my kids. Just to, Did you really? Yeah? He said. I was a great improviser.

00:24:10.04 – 00:24:15.64

It's like one of the things I'm very proud of being, you know, good at, so it was nice.

2Speaker 2
00:24:16.20 – 00:24:18.12

Oh, I love that. Oh, that makes us so happy.

3Speaker 3
00:24:18.74 – 00:24:27.36

I would also say about him that he is also quite average at improv, quite average.

1Speaker 1
00:24:27.68 – 00:24:29.34

Can he play that for his kids?

3Speaker 3
00:24:29.86 – 00:24:31.88

Yeah, can he play? yeah, play that for his kids.

1Speaker 1
00:24:35.30 – 00:24:39.38

Steve Tim was on office, ladies, and we have a clip you might want for your kids.

2Speaker 2
00:24:40.44 – 00:24:41.20

He says, You're-.

3Speaker 3
00:24:43.28 – 00:24:44.74

You're quite average.

2Speaker 2
00:24:44.74 – 00:24:48.16

You're quite average. Keep at it, buddy, keep at it.

3Speaker 3
00:24:48.46 – 00:24:48.90

He's great.

1Speaker 1
00:24:49.14 – 00:24:51.22

Tim, Before we let you go, what are you up to now?

3Speaker 3
00:24:51.72 – 00:25:01.76

Well, actually, I am about to head out to London in Barcelona to do some long-form improv with some friends of mine. Matt Walsh from the Upright Citizens Brigade.

2Speaker 2
00:25:01.86 – 00:25:02.18

Love Matt.

3Speaker 3
00:25:02.44 – 00:25:17.34

He and I, and Joe Canale and Brad Morris, two friends of ours from Chicago. We got invited to come to London. We got a couple of more European invitations, so we're gonna do this other trip again. Yeah, in January, we're gonna be out there, it's gonna be great.

2Speaker 2
00:25:17.62 – 00:25:23.58

Oh, that's great. Give us all the details, we'll put it in our office ladies pod stories so folks can come find y'all.

3Speaker 3
00:25:23.62 – 00:25:24.72

Okay, I will.

1Speaker 1
00:25:25.30 – 00:25:39.84

Oh well, everybody, please go watch our movie Mean Girls. It comes out this Friday, January 12th. It's your last chance to see Tim Meadows in an educator role, so take advantage of that and it's a chance to see me standing-.

2Speaker 2
00:25:39.84 – 00:25:40.20

Not move.

1Speaker 1
00:25:40.20 – 00:25:42.34

While others sing and dance around me.

3Speaker 3
00:25:44.86 – 00:25:45.92

See Jenna.

2Speaker 2
00:25:46.36 – 00:25:48.10

Stand in one spot.

00:25:51.74 – 00:25:53.80

I can't wait, I can't wait.

3Speaker 3
00:25:53.80 – 00:25:56.04

You got me crying, I'm crying over here.

00:25:58.04 – 00:25:59.48

Thank you for having me.

2Speaker 2
00:25:59.78 – 00:26:01.04

Yes, absolutely.

1Speaker 1
00:26:11.98 – 00:26:14.28

We are back, my heart is full.

2Speaker 2
00:26:14.78 – 00:26:15.82

Tim is so wonderful.

1Speaker 1
00:26:16.18 – 00:26:17.58

I love him, what a treat.

2Speaker 2
00:26:18.56 – 00:26:23.30

All right, before we get into this episode, I feel like we need a little call sheet tidbit.

1Speaker 1
00:26:23.86 – 00:26:24.30

Already.

2Speaker 2
00:26:24.56 – 00:26:38.78

Already from Steve Burgess, I got all the call sheets and I have to share this just right away. Y'all, I love you. It was the week of August 6th when we shot this episode. Monday, the first day of filming, was the coolest day of the week.

00:26:38.88 – 00:26:40.42

It was 98 degrees.

1Speaker 1
00:26:41.08 – 00:26:41.36

Wow.

2Speaker 2
00:26:41.84 – 00:26:43.84

We're getting to triple digits real fast.

1Speaker 1
00:26:44.22 – 00:26:52.82

Yeah, this was a hot week and this is gonna come up later when I discuss some location challenges based on this heat.

2Speaker 2
00:26:53.30 – 00:26:55.26

Well, let's get into this cold open.

1Speaker 1
00:26:55.72 – 00:26:58.98

It's a personal favorite of mine, it's the chore wheel.

2Speaker 2
00:26:58.98 – 00:27:01.90

Jenna, have you made a chore wheel in your real life?

1Speaker 1
00:27:02.38 – 00:27:04.04

No, you would think I had.

2Speaker 2
00:27:04.30 – 00:27:07.86

Chore chart, chore anything, chore lists. I bet there's chore lists.

1Speaker 1
00:27:08.26 – 00:27:09.50

Yeah, we have a whiteboard.

2Speaker 2
00:27:09.98 – 00:27:10.34

Okay.

1Speaker 1
00:27:10.74 – 00:27:11.92

Right, that counts.

2Speaker 2
00:27:12.14 – 00:27:14.52

That's a chore board, chore board, okay?

1Speaker 1
00:27:14.96 – 00:27:21.44

I really regret not keeping the chore wheel. Oh, that would've been a fun one. Any of the chore wheels? I wanted the mini wheel, I wanted the bigger wheels.

00:27:21.88 – 00:27:39.16

I begged Phil Shea for them. But there were not multiples of these chore wheels, there was one of each, and he had to put them in storage. In case we ever used them again. On the show, you know, there's a possibility the chore wheel could come back, it could.

2Speaker 2
00:27:39.20 – 00:27:40.06

It could've been a thing.

1Speaker 1
00:27:40.20 – 00:27:45.76

Yeah, so I couldn't take it, and I just wish I would've remembered when the show was over. That's what I'm kicking myself about.

2Speaker 2
00:27:45.92 – 00:27:55.06

Yeah, the mini chore wheel, like sitting on a bookshelf, would be amazing, right? I did see online this young gal at college made herself a mini chore wheel. Aw.

00:27:55.16 – 00:27:58.30

Like Pam's for her dorm room, people are so crafty.

1Speaker 1
00:27:58.64 – 00:28:15.46

Well, I guess we should describe what happened. Yes, Pam gets to work and there's like, trash everywhere. Oh, it's disgusting, I guess. The janitor of the building is on vacation and Dwight isn't gonna hire a temporary replacement, so everybody has to do their own cleaning up.

2Speaker 2
00:28:15.70 – 00:28:16.96

And no one is doing it.

1Speaker 1
00:28:17.14 – 00:28:22.30

So Pam makes her chore wheel, yes, but nobody likes it because it doesn't spin.

2Speaker 2
00:28:22.84 – 00:28:25.82

I would like to point out that Pam has fancy nail polish again.

1Speaker 1
00:28:26.30 – 00:28:26.80

Yes.

2Speaker 2
00:28:26.94 – 00:28:28.60

This time, it's a burgundy color.

1Speaker 1
00:28:28.74 – 00:28:36.72

Mm-hmm. Also at 16 seconds. I really enjoyed the detail that Dwight is sitting at his desk and not participating in the conference room meeting.

2Speaker 2
00:28:36.72 – 00:29:00.36

Yes, he's watching from afar. Would you like a breakdown of Pam's original chore wheel? Sure, here are the chores. Clean restrooms, water plants, replace lights, wash windows, mug duty, vacuum, clean kitchenette, sweep entrance, empty trash, dust off machines and clean break room.

00:29:00.62 – 00:29:04.36

The second chore wheel has the exact same categories, but it just spins.

1Speaker 1
00:29:04.52 – 00:29:05.16

Yes.

2Speaker 2
00:29:05.40 – 00:29:12.88

No one was impressed. And the final chore wheel spins and has all new categories which are bankrupt.

1Speaker 1
00:29:13.38 – 00:29:14.44

Go home now.

2Speaker 2
00:29:14.72 – 00:29:19.90

Exclamation point manager for an hour, candy bar punch in the gut.

1Speaker 1
00:29:20.42 – 00:29:22.26

10 bucks, Creed's choice.

2Speaker 2
00:29:22.86 – 00:29:29.64

Warehouse vacation, no internet, tiny wheel, Stanley gets your lunch and spin again.

1Speaker 1
00:29:29.86 – 00:29:36.04

Well, that is certainly a much more fun wheel. Yeah, it is. There's ups and downs on that one. 10 bucks.

2Speaker 2
00:29:36.16 – 00:29:37.22

I wanna get that one.

1Speaker 1
00:29:37.46 – 00:30:03.46

But the original one is all chores. And when Kevin spins and gets mug duty, everyone's like, This thing sucks. We got a fan question from Maddy R in Dallas, Texas, who said In the cold Open when Kevin's spin lands on mug duty? Pam explains that this means he has to clean all the mugs in the sink. I have never worked in an office, so maybe I'm wrong, but isn't it weird that people don't clean their own mugs?

00:30:03.98 – 00:30:15.98

Is this something that the custodial staff would do? Why can't everyone just wash their own mug for the time being? Well, lady, this took me down a rabbit hole. I googled mug cleaning culture in offices.

2Speaker 2
00:30:16.28 – 00:30:21.84

You did, I did, I googled. What are the top 10 chores people hate doing the most?

1Speaker 1
00:30:22.34 – 00:30:24.24

In offices or in life?

2Speaker 2
00:30:24.28 – 00:30:31.50

In life, why don't we start with your mug cleaning? And then I'll tell you the top 10 most hated chores, according to the Internet Great.

1Speaker 1
00:30:31.94 – 00:31:10.76

All right, well, I thought about this because when we worked at the Earwolf offices. I would always have the instinct to clean my own mug. But I noticed that it was the culture of the office to just leave your mugs and glasses in the sink. And it was part of the front desk, the person who worked the front desk would always clean all the mugs. We just had community mugs, I don't know if people brought their own in, but I just always used the community mug, which never really bothered me. Until I was digging deeper into this basic office coffee mug etiquette, and I found out a really disturbing fact that I can't unthink now.

2Speaker 2
00:31:10.96 – 00:31:13.48

About coffee mugs, uh-huh at work.

1Speaker 1
00:31:13.60 – 00:31:29.28

Uh-huh. I found a study that was done by Total Jobs that found that one in five communal office mugs contain fecal matter. What because 25 of people don't wash their hands after they go to the bathroom? Ah?

00:31:30.00 – 00:31:30.28

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:31:30.74 – 00:31:33.20

Oh my God, we have to bring our own mugs everywhere.

1Speaker 1
00:31:33.34 – 00:31:37.92

That's what it said. It said you really need to bring your own mug and wash your own mug.

2Speaker 2
00:31:37.92 – 00:31:38.98

And then take it home.

1Speaker 1
00:31:39.62 – 00:31:41.26

And then bring it back or hide it in your desk.

2Speaker 2
00:31:41.36 – 00:31:42.10

Put it in your drawer.

1Speaker 1
00:31:42.40 – 00:31:52.50

Yeah, that's disgusting, I know. And this feels like a time when I have to remind everybody that I always wash my hands after number two and I always wash my hands.

2Speaker 2
00:31:52.56 – 00:31:53.74

Oh, because of that one time.

1Speaker 1
00:31:53.90 – 00:32:09.36

In a public space, I just sometimes don't wash my hands every time I tinkle in my own house. Okay, that's all, but I'm not putting any fecal matter on any mugs. I just wanna get that out there and clear that up for anybody who's gonna come for me in the comments.

00:32:10.36 – 00:32:38.34

This study also found that the average office desk has 400 times more bacteria than a toilet seat. So if you're gonna eat lunch at work, you're gonna wanna wipe that space down before you eat. And you should also wash your reusable water bottle every single day, so don't leave it on your desk overnight. And then come into work and just start drinking out of it again. Because it's not sanitary and the water will breed bacteria and you could get sick.

2Speaker 2
00:32:38.66 – 00:32:39.82

Oh, I do that all the time.

1Speaker 1
00:32:39.88 – 00:32:40.24

I know.

2Speaker 2
00:32:40.36 – 00:32:43.92

I just leave a water bottle on my desk and I just pick right back up with it.

1Speaker 1
00:32:44.00 – 00:32:46.34

I know you're drinking some bacteria.

2Speaker 2
00:32:46.78 – 00:32:47.12

Okay.

1Speaker 1
00:32:47.36 – 00:32:49.08

But you're not drinking fecal matter.

2Speaker 2
00:32:49.24 – 00:32:49.64

I am not.

1Speaker 1
00:32:49.72 – 00:32:50.36

You are not.

2Speaker 2
00:32:50.84 – 00:32:56.32

Wow, okay, gonna look at the communal coffee mugs differently, anywhere I go now.

1Speaker 1
00:32:56.82 – 00:32:58.64

Yep, I'm using one right now.

2Speaker 2
00:32:58.98 – 00:33:14.64

Well, before we get to my top 10 chores people hate, I wanna share Pam's talking head and the chore that Meredith gets. Pam says she's been through several stages of development of the chore wheel with her team. Who's her team? There's no team, I think it's herself.

00:33:14.82 – 00:33:21.80

I'm like, Pam, there's no team you're trying to sound fancy. And she's added incentives. We've talked about it. $10 candy bar.

00:33:22.28 – 00:33:35.00

And then Meredith gets tiny wheel and everyone starts cheering. Pam spins it and it lands on toilets, and they're like, woo-hoo, and Meredith was like, Yay, toilets, she seems so happy to clean toilets.

00:33:35.16 – 00:33:42.50

But let me tell you. According to the internet, cleaning the bathroom slash toilets is number one on the chores people hate.

1Speaker 1
00:33:42.82 – 00:33:43.92

It's one of my favorite chores.

2Speaker 2
00:33:44.38 – 00:33:44.80

Really.

1Speaker 1
00:33:45.08 – 00:33:50.50

I love all water-based cleaning bathrooms, kitchen sink, dishes.

2Speaker 2
00:33:51.14 – 00:33:54.58

I like that you've given it a category, yeah, water-based cleaning.

1Speaker 1
00:33:54.68 – 00:33:57.76

If I'm using like water, you like it, I like it.

2Speaker 2
00:33:57.88 – 00:34:00.62

Number two is washing the dishes. You probably like it, it's water-based.

1Speaker 1
00:34:00.68 – 00:34:01.36

I don't mind it.

2Speaker 2
00:34:01.36 – 00:34:04.20

Number three, cleaning the stovetop and oven.

1Speaker 1
00:34:04.74 – 00:34:06.20

Okay, I don't care for that.

2Speaker 2
00:34:06.36 – 00:34:08.54

Yeah, it's very greasy business.

1Speaker 1
00:34:08.74 – 00:34:11.90

And also it's like a lot of little corners, little nooks, yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:34:12.46 – 00:34:18.98

Number four doing laundry and ironing. Oh, that's a big sigh, you don't like doing laundry.

1Speaker 1
00:34:19.52 – 00:34:20.82

Depends on the day, okay?

2Speaker 2
00:34:21.82 – 00:34:22.26

Dusting.

1Speaker 1
00:34:22.72 – 00:34:23.16

Hate.

2Speaker 2
00:34:23.34 – 00:34:23.82

Hate dusting?

1Speaker 1
00:34:23.82 – 00:34:25.86

Move it up to number one, okay for me.

2Speaker 2
00:34:26.16 – 00:34:28.00

Number six sweeping and vacuuming.

1Speaker 1
00:34:28.28 – 00:34:28.96

Number two.

2Speaker 2
00:34:29.04 – 00:34:35.20

I don't mind it at all. I love to vacuum really, like, Yeah, I like to see the grooves in the carpet.

00:34:35.74 – 00:34:36.56

I don't know.

1Speaker 1
00:34:36.66 – 00:34:39.82

I hate dry cleaning, dusting, vacuuming, don't care for it.

2Speaker 2
00:34:39.88 – 00:34:44.16

Okay, this is your category. Water-based or dry cleaning? Next up is mopping.

1Speaker 1
00:34:44.70 – 00:34:46.62

It's the one wet activity I don't like.

2Speaker 2
00:34:46.76 – 00:34:54.76

Okay, you've got one, oh, next one. Grocery shopping and cooking. yeah, these are things people don't like doing.

00:34:54.76 – 00:34:58.16

Guys number nine, cleaning the windows, I love cleaning windows.

1Speaker 1
00:34:58.24 – 00:34:58.78

I don't mind it.

2Speaker 2
00:34:59.00 – 00:35:06.40

You know why? It's like an immediate result. I think that's what I like. And lastly, cleaning the gutters, I don't want to clean the gutters.

00:35:06.54 – 00:35:11.52

Josh cleans the gutters, I don't want to clean the gutters. I also can't reach even on our tallest ladder.

1Speaker 1
00:35:12.26 – 00:35:22.76

Sure, it's so interesting that that one was included, you know what they didn't include on that list? Maybe this just falls under laundry, but this would be real high on my list of things I hate doing.

00:35:23.24 – 00:35:23.68

Sheets.

2Speaker 2
00:35:23.96 – 00:35:24.32

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:35:24.44 – 00:35:29.90

Putting sheets on a bed, Making a bed from scratch I don't mind making a bed that already has covers on it.

2Speaker 2
00:35:30.02 – 00:35:35.04

Yeah, I don't mind that, I don't mind like the fitted sheet doesn't bother me.

1Speaker 1
00:35:35.68 – 00:35:48.28

I'm very lucky because I feel like Lee and I. we balance each other like the things I hate. He doesn't mind, yeah, if we're going to clean up the house, he does all the vacuuming, he just like, gets on it.

00:35:48.50 – 00:35:51.82

And I'm happy to do the bathrooms, it's interesting.

2Speaker 2
00:35:52.16 – 00:35:52.28

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:35:52.28 – 00:35:54.16

We never talked about it, it just sort of happened.

2Speaker 2
00:35:54.22 – 00:35:58.70

Same with Josh and I. We just sort of found our strengths or something, yeah, and just leaned into them.

1Speaker 1
00:35:58.88 – 00:36:10.76

Exactly, well, this cold open is going to end with Meredith trotting away very excited to clean some toilets. Then we're going to zoom in on a little rat. Yeah, that's walking around Dwight and Jim's desks.

00:36:11.24 – 00:36:19.64

This rat was, of course, from Bob Dunn's. Where do they keep all these animals? They have dogs, cats, porcupines, rats, squirrels. Where are they?

2Speaker 2
00:36:20.08 – 00:36:24.48

I'd like to think, Do they live together? Bob Dunn has a farm, That's what I'd like to think. I don't know.

1Speaker 1
00:36:24.54 – 00:36:39.28

It's so interesting to me, anyway. Steve Burgess said he thinks that the rat cost about $200 a day. We had to hire it for two days, it needed its training day and a shooting day, and we also had to pay for the trainer, plus transportation.

00:36:39.52 – 00:36:44.40

So in the end, it was about $1,500 to get that shot of the rat.

2Speaker 2
00:36:44.44 – 00:36:45.10

That rat shot.

1Speaker 1
00:36:45.10 – 00:36:45.70

In the trash.

2Speaker 2
00:36:46.08 – 00:36:55.30

Well, you know, there was part of me when we saw that little rat that really wanted Erin or Daryl to have a name for it. Because we know they've been feeding mice for years, maybe they know this dude.

1Speaker 1
00:36:55.30 – 00:36:59.68

Yes, maybe Daryl has a little top hat for it. Yeah, oh, that would have been cute.

2Speaker 2
00:37:00.00 – 00:37:01.02

Well, the show is gonna open.

1Speaker 1
00:37:01.18 – 00:37:02.24

We're at Jim and Pam's house.

2Speaker 2
00:37:02.42 – 00:37:07.88

They're loading up the car. Cece's playing in the front yard, looks like she has her little like snuggle blanket on her head.

1Speaker 1
00:37:07.98 – 00:37:10.94

She has the same little lovey that my kids used.

2Speaker 2
00:37:11.20 – 00:37:12.94

Oh yeah, yeah, so cute.

1Speaker 1
00:37:13.50 – 00:37:15.54

Well, per the call sheet.

2Speaker 2
00:37:15.72 – 00:37:29.20

This day, the high was 101 degrees. It was Tuesday. We also had a table read this day for Andy's ancestry. And I thought you might like to have a little get to know your cast and crew. Moment. Oh, all right.

1Speaker 1
00:37:29.24 – 00:37:29.88

Sounds good.

2Speaker 2
00:37:30.08 – 00:37:46.62

I have two for this episode. First one up was Edward Nielsen III from our camera and electrical department. Here are things you didn't know about Ed Nielsen, it says. Oh, where to begin? Dot dot, dot, dot, four dots.

00:37:47.22 – 00:37:58.32

Ed speaks. Orcish misses having no responsibility in his childhood and looks forward to doing nothing on the weekends. When asked about time travel, he said It is BS and for trekkies.

00:38:00.44 – 00:38:05.56

And, of course, my folks that love Lord of the Rings, you know, Orcish is the primary language of the orcs.

1Speaker 1
00:38:06.00 – 00:38:06.84

Oh, I didn't know that.

2Speaker 2
00:38:06.86 – 00:38:08.50

It is the main language of the horde.

1Speaker 1
00:38:08.82 – 00:38:10.26

So it's made up.

2Speaker 2
00:38:10.26 – 00:38:11.26

It's a made up language.

1Speaker 1
00:38:12.76 – 00:38:15.96

Oh, I didn't know it when you said it.

2Speaker 2
00:38:16.06 – 00:38:18.48

Okay, you had a blank look on your face.

3Speaker 3
00:38:18.76 – 00:38:19.94

I was like, Oh.

1Speaker 1
00:38:19.94 – 00:38:31.54

This must be some sort of Nordic language. I didn't know what it was. I was like, so impressive. I didn't know he spoke that. I would have read that and then gone up to him and be like, Oh my God, you speak this.

2Speaker 2
00:38:31.62 – 00:38:33.54

Where is it from? What is Orcish?

1Speaker 1
00:38:33.82 – 00:38:42.36

Yes, I'll have, you know, Angela. We shot this scene first up in the day. It was very, very early to avoid the heat. We're gonna see Jim in a talking head.

00:38:42.44 – 00:38:49.24

He's all dressed up, so is Pam? He explains. They are going to Roy's wedding at 8 a..m.

2Speaker 2
00:38:49.24 – 00:38:49.78

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:38:50.10 – 00:38:52.54

We got a fan mail flurry about this, Ange.

2Speaker 2
00:38:52.70 – 00:38:53.18

Oh yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:38:53.70 – 00:38:59.86

People wanna know why would Pam and Jim go to Roy's wedding? why would they even be invited?

2Speaker 2
00:39:00.50 – 00:39:14.70

Okay, well, there was a deleted storyline in last week's episode, New Guys, Right? and it sets up this Roy's wedding storyline. I really debated about sharing it last week, but then I thought, I don't wanna give away any spoilers, so I'm gonna share it this week.

1Speaker 1
00:39:14.82 – 00:39:15.10

Okay.

2Speaker 2
00:39:15.78 – 00:39:25.44

Jim and Pam have a scene where they discuss what they're buying Roy for his upcoming wedding. Oh yeah, and they're at their desk, they're looking at the wedding registry website.

00:39:26.04 – 00:39:29.42

And then there was a PAM talking head about it. Let's hear it.

1Speaker 1
00:39:30.30 – 00:39:40.72

ROY ANDERSON My former fiance is getting married unless his bride pulls what I'm sure they call a Pam or a that bitch pam.

2Speaker 2
00:39:44.54 – 00:39:57.52

And wait, there was a candy bag. Alt that was a must shoot, so you did say this to the camera. Here was an alt talking head, Pam would have said. ROY Anderson My former fiance is getting married.

00:39:58.04 – 00:40:12.58

What do you get for a man whose butt you've seen thousands of times? Okay? And I zoomed in on the wedding registry website. They decide to get Roy a ladle, right, like a fancy ladle.

00:40:12.80 – 00:40:21.62

And Pam's like, that doesn't seem like a lot. Jim's like, I don't know, get him the spoon, too, I looked. The ladle cost $174..

1Speaker 1
00:40:22.76 – 00:40:23.20

Whoa?

2Speaker 2
00:40:23.48 – 00:40:23.92

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:40:24.30 – 00:40:31.80

Well, my question is, how big is this ladle? Because that gift that they're carrying out of Jim and Pam's house, that box, is very large.

2Speaker 2
00:40:31.82 – 00:40:34.96

I know I thought that, too. I'm like, is that the ladle, the spoon, a platter?

1Speaker 1
00:40:34.98 – 00:40:46.74

Clearly they went another way. Well, we got another fan question from Kyle C in Stockton, California, from you who said A wedding on a morning of a workday at 8 a.m, huh?

2Speaker 2
00:40:47.14 – 00:40:47.44

Huh.

00:40:49.30 – 00:41:09.74

Well, Kyle, I want you to know that. Jenna and I have a mutual friend who got married very early on a Saturday morning and did a breakfast reception. And I went up to our friend at the reception and I was like, This is so pretty. I've never been to a wedding this early. And our friend leaned into me and said, Eggs are cheap.

1Speaker 1
00:41:10.90 – 00:41:11.82

I remember.

2Speaker 2
00:41:13.26 – 00:41:17.76

I won't give any names, but you know what, it can be a very cost-effective wedding.

1Speaker 1
00:41:18.08 – 00:41:37.72

Which we're gonna find out soon. That Roy didn't need a cost-effective wedding, so it does beg the question, Why is Roy's wedding at 8 a..m on a weekday? We never get an answer. But on her way to the car, Pam has grabbed a banana because she's pretty sure that Roy is not gonna have great food.

00:41:37.82 – 00:41:45.14

He's probably gonna serve hot dogs. They're being snarky about the wedding. What is this thing gonna be? It's Roy.

2Speaker 2
00:41:45.40 – 00:41:57.56

I know, but Pam's like, I planned a wedding with Roy, he wanted hot dogs. Jim's look to camera is like, again, how weird is this? I'm going to my wife's ex-fiance's wedding. Pam planned a whole wedding with this person.

1Speaker 1
00:41:58.06 – 00:42:09.96

Now we're gonna head over to Dunder. Mifflin and Pete and Clark have arrived to the office. They tend to do things in unison all the time. Have you noticed they arrive at exactly the same time?

00:42:10.08 – 00:42:14.40

They take a break at the same time, these guys are joined at the hip, it's interesting.

2Speaker 2
00:42:14.98 – 00:42:19.30

But it doesn't seem like by choice, like it doesn't seem like Pete wants to be joined.

1Speaker 1
00:42:19.82 – 00:42:34.78

With Clark, No. Erin has one piece of mail for the customer service department and she's gonna give it to Pete. This time, she's dividing it up. There's a little banter between Pete and Erin and Gosh, the way he looks at her.

00:42:34.92 – 00:42:42.22

He's so charmed by the fact that sometimes she writes nice letters to customer service departments. He's like, that's the sweetest thing.

2Speaker 2
00:42:42.48 – 00:42:46.46

I know it's cute, I like it's a little bit of a meet cute.

1Speaker 1
00:42:46.58 – 00:42:52.76

It's a little bit of a meet cute, and I'm just gonna say, right now, I like how Pete looks at her. Yeah, I do.

2Speaker 2
00:42:53.10 – 00:42:53.34

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:42:53.70 – 00:42:57.32

I think they want me to root for this romance and I already am.

2Speaker 2
00:42:57.38 – 00:43:12.36

I'm already on board. We just don't want Erin and Andy to end up together. I think they could bring anyone in. We're like, Okay, well, you guys will remember that. Nellie says her real specialty is special projects, and she's got a new special project.

00:43:12.50 – 00:43:27.72

Her new special project is the launch of Operation Gift Back. She's passing out flyers to everyone. It's her new charity initiative. Andy has rejected all of her special project proposals, but this one is for charity. So she'd like to see him piss on this one.

00:43:28.62 – 00:43:39.70

She's going to address the bullpen and say there's $4,000 to give to charity and they get to pick the charities. So she wants everyone to sort of make suggestions, yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:43:40.06 – 00:43:45.88

Stanley is gonna suggest the American Diabetes Foundation. Angela finds this to be a selfish choice.

2Speaker 2
00:43:46.06 – 00:43:54.56

Yes, he has diabetes. Creed wants to help Jimmy Carter build Gnomes. Does that just get tossed out there and no one reacts to it?

1Speaker 1
00:43:54.56 – 00:44:03.84

No one reacted. Toby has an idea, but he gets interrupted, and finally, Dwight announces he's not gonna participate due to the lack of evidence that charity works.

2Speaker 2
00:44:04.62 – 00:44:05.46

Hmm, yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:44:06.30 – 00:44:16.80

Nellie tells Dwight the participation is mandatory, so he says, Fine. I pick the Global Relief Foundation, by the way. It was recently discovered to be a front for the Taliban.

2Speaker 2
00:44:17.44 – 00:44:19.44

And everyone's like, Ah, Dwight.

1Speaker 1
00:44:19.62 – 00:44:25.94

I know I'd like to point out that Nellie has a beautiful bouquet of roses on her desk. Oh, I don't know why.

2Speaker 2
00:44:26.06 – 00:44:27.56

Do they compliment her fancy chair?

1Speaker 1
00:44:27.90 – 00:44:34.56

She doesn't have her fancy chair anymore. Oh no, I guess she had to take it home because Andy doesn't have it either, I know.

2Speaker 2
00:44:35.22 – 00:44:40.32

Well, now we are gonna go to Roy's wedding, it looks lovely, it's like a garden wedding outside.

1Speaker 1
00:44:40.96 – 00:44:46.34

Yes, I guess it's in his backyard. Bob, Vance and Phyllis are there, Daryl and Val are there.

2Speaker 2
00:44:46.74 – 00:44:47.06

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:44:47.30 – 00:44:52.86

Roy's gonna greet Daryl, He's happy, he looks great. Yeah, super handsome. David Denman.

2Speaker 2
00:44:53.18 – 00:45:06.44

Yeah, there's a tray of mimosas going by, and Jim and Pam are gonna arrive. Pam's still eating her banana. They're walking up the driveway and they're greeted by a waiter. He's got mimosas on a silver tray.

00:45:06.90 – 00:45:16.62

This waiter has maybe my favorite line of the entire episode. It's some real good, like side-eye snark, he says. Would you like me to take your peel?

1Speaker 1
00:45:17.70 – 00:45:33.74

I just thought it was really funny. We got a lot of mail about this opening scene. Fan question from Allison W. in Winnipeg, who said Do Jim and Pam live really close to Roy? Why was Pam still eating her banana when they arrived to his house?

00:45:34.42 – 00:45:36.86

Or maybe Pam just savors eating a banana?

2Speaker 2
00:45:37.40 – 00:45:43.10

Oh, this is like some deep, deep leaning into banana time, like, what is your banana clock?

1Speaker 1
00:45:43.44 – 00:46:11.90

Well, Allison, I'll tell you, in real life, Pam and Jim's house is an entire day away from Roy's house because we shot these on different days. And also, you know, when Pam is leaving her house, she hasn't started eating her banana yet. That was a choice I made because I knew I was gonna have to still be eating it when I arrived. So I think we were thinking that she just waited to eat it in the car. By the way, that's also why I gave myself the business of, like, futzing with my earring as I walked out of the house.

00:46:12.22 – 00:46:18.30

I wanted you to believe, like, maybe I got in the car and still futzing with myself, I believed it.

2Speaker 2
00:46:18.38 – 00:46:19.34

You sold it.

1Speaker 1
00:46:19.50 – 00:46:19.84

Thank you.

2Speaker 2
00:46:19.96 – 00:46:22.66

I ate a banana on my drive in this morning.

1Speaker 1
00:46:22.66 – 00:46:23.30

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:46:23.70 – 00:46:26.84

I have about a half hour drive and I only ate half my banana.

1Speaker 1
00:46:27.14 – 00:46:29.18

But you always only eat half your food.

2Speaker 2
00:46:29.32 – 00:46:29.78

That's true.

1Speaker 1
00:46:30.00 – 00:46:31.26

Yeah, you fill up fast.

2Speaker 2
00:46:31.48 – 00:46:31.72

I can't.

1Speaker 1
00:46:31.74 – 00:46:32.76

You have a tiny stomach.

2Speaker 2
00:46:32.94 – 00:46:35.74

I can't really be part of this banana time conversation.

1Speaker 1
00:46:36.50 – 00:46:53.48

Well, speaking of locations, Roy's house was filmed at a house on Ventura Canyon in Sherman Oaks. And Steve Burgess reminded me that we ran into a number of logistical problems at this location, many based on the extreme heat. Angela, do you have a temperature for me?

2Speaker 2
00:46:53.82 – 00:47:01.04

I do, per the call sheet, the day you filmed these scenes was Thursday, August 9th, and the high was 103 degrees.

1Speaker 1
00:47:01.56 – 00:47:07.80

Yeah, it was hot and it was sunny, so we had to bring in a condor, not the bird.

2Speaker 2
00:47:08.06 – 00:47:11.24

Oh, the crane to try to shade it.

1Speaker 1
00:47:11.56 – 00:47:23.86

Yeah, we had to put up this huge. It's called a fly swatter in the biz. yeah, a little biz lingo for you, and it's just like a huge piece of sheery silk material.

00:47:24.12 – 00:47:36.18

They hang it really high over the location so that it lets in light and it's not like too low on us, I guess. But every time the sun would move, we would have to move the fly swatter.

2Speaker 2
00:47:36.82 – 00:47:41.00

So it would have to be like, Oh my gosh, it's like a big thing to move, it's an enormous crane.

1Speaker 1
00:47:41.28 – 00:47:51.82

Yeah, we also had to move it from the front of the house to the back of the house and it was really time consuming. And Steve Burgess sent me pictures of it so you can put them in our Instagram stories. Angela.

2Speaker 2
00:47:51.82 – 00:47:52.14

Oh, I will.

1Speaker 1
00:47:52.52 – 00:48:02.00

We also got a fan question from Marissa D. in San Jose, California, who said, Jenna, how many times did you have to eat that banana? I hope only once, Marissa, it wasn't only once.

2Speaker 2
00:48:02.72 – 00:48:03.48

How many times?

1Speaker 1
00:48:03.58 – 00:48:16.70

It was a lot of times, that's all I remember. When I watched the scene, I was like, I ate so much banana, but I was really committed to it. But I also had a spit bucket, so any banana that was left when the scene was over, I got to spit it out, you know?

2Speaker 2
00:48:16.70 – 00:48:17.08

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:48:17.46 – 00:48:20.74

So I probably ate half as much banana as it seems like I ate.

2Speaker 2
00:48:20.88 – 00:48:24.14

You're always thankful for a spit bucket when you're doing scenes like this.

1Speaker 1
00:48:24.36 – 00:48:28.88

I mean, remember how sick Rain got when he had to eat all the bananas because he didn't spit them out.

2Speaker 2
00:48:28.94 – 00:48:29.40

I know.

1Speaker 1
00:48:29.54 – 00:48:33.72

You know, bananas are a binding food, they constipate you.

2Speaker 2
00:48:33.72 – 00:48:36.38

They will mess you up if you go too hard.

1Speaker 1
00:48:36.62 – 00:48:54.12

Yeah, you shouldn't eat that much banana, you know, in one sitting, all right? Next up fan question from Caden M. in Warrenville, Illinois, Jenna, was it scripted that you put the other half of the banana on the plate, or was that an ad lib? It's one of the funniest moments in the whole show.

2Speaker 2
00:48:54.30 – 00:49:03.72

I agree, I agree. When the waiter says, Can I take your peel? and she flops it on the tray and grabbed a mimosa, I was like, Oh, I like this Pam.

00:49:04.14 – 00:49:07.04

This Pam is ready to like, take on this wedding.

1Speaker 1
00:49:07.44 – 00:49:22.78

Well, this was a scripted moment, and here's what it said It was scripted. That Pam quote awkwardly stuffs the rest of the banana in her mouth and gives the peel to the caterer. The caterer, by the way, was played by David Britz. And we had a good time.

2Speaker 2
00:49:23.04 – 00:49:43.22

He was great. Well, during this banana business, Jim is gonna get a phone call, he's been getting lots of phone calls, he's been shady about him, too. He jokes to Pam that it's his ex-fiance. And then he has a talking head where he shares that he has started a new business with his college friend, and Pam doesn't know.

00:49:43.70 – 00:49:55.38

Well, actually, he told Pam. But then they decided no, but then he decided yes anyway, so he thinks there's gonna be another conversation coming. Oh, big sigh.

?Unknown Speaker
00:49:56.22 – 00:49:56.58

Yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:49:57.00 – 00:50:11.18

So he's now just shared with the camera crew of this documentary. Pam's gonna have to watch this someday. That he has gone behind her back and is keeping the secret. And now a lot of people know, but Pam?

1Speaker 1
00:50:11.92 – 00:50:18.80

Yeah, well, now we're gonna see a scene where Jim approaches Roy. Yeah, I'm calling the scene snark alert.

2Speaker 2
00:50:19.06 – 00:50:38.08

Well, it's good that you did, lady, because I thought there was some snark and I went to the shooting draft. And it says, as Jim approaches Roy in parentheses, a little snarky, Oh aha, look snarky in the shooting draft. When Jim says, Is it almost time to cut the pancake? or what?

1Speaker 1
00:50:38.74 – 00:50:39.46

What a dick.

3Speaker 3
00:50:39.80 – 00:50:41.24

What a snarky thing to say.

2Speaker 2
00:50:41.86 – 00:50:44.70

Who is Jim Season nine? Who is this guy?

1Speaker 1
00:50:45.20 – 00:50:48.90

Ah, Roy couldn't be lovelier, he's so gracious.

2Speaker 2
00:50:49.06 – 00:50:53.90

He said You know what, we appreciate everyone coming out so early, it's just been so nice. Mm-hmm.

1Speaker 1
00:50:54.22 – 00:51:03.28

And also, listen, he wouldn't have met Laura if it hadn't been for Jim, right? Yeah, and then Roy does get a dig in, he says. Really dodged a bullet on that one. Am I right?

00:51:03.28 – 00:51:04.68

Ha ha ha, yeah.

2Speaker 2
00:51:05.06 – 00:51:07.60

But then, all of a sudden.

1Speaker 1
00:51:07.78 – 00:51:11.56

We're gonna find out that Roy has a $50,000 car.

2Speaker 2
00:51:11.80 – 00:51:28.34

Well, wait, he started a gravel company and it just took off. And then Roy's brother Kenny walks up and says to Roy, Hey bro, stop wasting time with this haircut, and points to Jim. And that's when he shares that he has a $50,000 sports car.

1Speaker 1
00:51:28.44 – 00:51:28.92

I know.

2Speaker 2
00:51:29.28 – 00:51:33.70

I want you to know, Kenny's scripted line was Stop wasting time with this limp dick.

?Unknown Speaker
00:51:34.34 – 00:51:37.08

Ha ha ha, boy, that's making me laugh.

1Speaker 1
00:51:37.62 – 00:51:53.20

That's really funny. We had a fan question, Angela, from Shelby A in Huntsville, Alabama, who said We see Roy and Jim interact at Roy's wedding. Was there anything scripted between Pam and Roy? I'm so curious what they would have said to each other after all those years.

2Speaker 2
00:51:53.58 – 00:52:04.72

Well, Shelby, I was really curious about this, too. I went to the shooting draft. There are no scenes with Roy and Pam, but there might be a reason why she never makes it to Roy. Because she gets some serious shade from his parents.

1Speaker 1
00:52:05.42 – 00:52:05.48

M.M.

2Speaker 2
00:52:05.90 – 00:52:17.42

So in the shooting draft, it said Pam stands awkwardly with two drinks. She is clearly heading back to Jim when Roy's parents stop her. And I think you got to hear it. It's in deleted scenes.

00:52:17.54 – 00:52:24.30

She gets some serious shade. We just love Laura. I couldn't imagine a better daughter-in-law.

3Speaker 3
00:52:24.66 – 00:52:26.40

It's great to see Roy so happy.

2Speaker 2
00:52:26.76 – 00:52:28.64

Oh, he's the happiest he's ever been.

3Speaker 3
00:52:29.20 – 00:52:29.66

How wonderful.

2Speaker 2
00:52:30.50 – 00:52:38.92

Laura's really easy to get along with and she's loyal, which is what I think Roy needs. Nice to see you again, Pam.

?Unknown Speaker
00:52:40.34 – 00:52:41.16

Be well.

2Speaker 2
00:52:42.64 – 00:52:54.02

And so Pam has just left there, standing awkwardly with two drinks, and she never makes it over to Jim and Roy. So maybe that's why there's no scene between Pam and Roy.

1Speaker 1
00:52:54.02 – 00:52:58.30

Oh, I remember shooting that scene, that was so fun.

2Speaker 2
00:52:58.50 – 00:53:01.14

I love the dad as he walks away, he just goes be well.

1Speaker 1
00:53:01.52 – 00:53:07.74

Yeah, so now you thought the biggest creeper, Dunder Mifflin, had left?

2Speaker 2
00:53:08.16 – 00:53:08.78

Yeah, no.

1Speaker 1
00:53:08.78 – 00:53:16.98

When we said goodbye to Robert California, we thought all of the perversion left with him, but we were wrong, and oh, were we wrong?

2Speaker 2
00:53:17.62 – 00:53:20.02

Clark is just as bad as Robert, California.

1Speaker 1
00:53:20.62 – 00:53:24.18

Yeah, I mean, dare I say he's worse?

2Speaker 2
00:53:24.60 – 00:53:24.76

Yeah.

1Speaker 1
00:53:25.46 – 00:53:45.54

He's in the break room, he and Pete are side by side per usual, and they're having a snack. Erin is seated at a different table. Clark is gonna take a phone call. Clearly, the person on the other line is asking if he knows anyone who could be a newscaster, because that's how you become a newscaster, everybody.
