This winter, L.L. Bean wants to help you feel great out there, with gear tips and advice

00:08.24 – 00:12.12

for heading outdoors and exploring all the possibilities of the season.

00:12.88 – 00:17.10

Now that it's getting cold out, layering up for warmth is more important than ever.

00:17.50 – 00:22.20

If you're doing something active like snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, or hiking, a good rule

00:22.20 – 00:26.86

of thumb is to start out dressed like it's 10 degrees warmer than it is, so once you

00:26.86 – 00:30.00

start generating body heat, you won't get overly hot.

00:30.36 – 00:33.00

Then layer up or down as conditions require.

I'm Jason Epperson, this is the America's National Park Podcast, and welcome to our

00:50.42 – 00:53.10

monthly National Park News Roundup.

00:53.62 – 00:58.46

On Thursday, November 9th, the National Park Service announced that Arches, Glacier, and

00:58.46 – 01:03.42

Rocky Mountain National Parks will bring back their pilot entry reservation systems for

01:03.42 – 01:09.66

2024, rather than implementing a more permanent timed entry plan that is coming in the future

01:09.66 – 01:10.18

for sure.

01:10.54 – 01:14.52

So, you will have to make reservations at these popular parks in order to visit for

01:14.52 – 01:18.32

the most part, but the way it all works is different depending on the park and it could

01:18.32 – 01:19.92

change over the course of the year.

01:19.92 – 01:25.02

But beginning on April 1st, Arches National Park will require visitors to have a timed

01:25.02 – 01:30.40

entry permit, and you can begin booking those reservations as soon as January 2nd.

01:30.88 – 01:36.54

Glacier National Park will require reservations beginning on May 24th for the western side

01:36.54 – 01:42.58

of Going-to-the-Sun Road and North Fork, and another on July 1st for Many Glacier.

01:43.02 – 01:48.90

At Glacier, unlike last year, 2024 reservations will only be good for one day due to data

01:48.90 – 01:54.38

that showed that only 2% of participants entered the park during all three days their

01:54.38 – 01:56.42

permit was good for 2023.

01:56.86 – 02:01.20

Rocky Mountain National Park will bring back its timed entry system beginning on May 24th

02:01.20 – 02:06.18

as well, and the same as in 2023, visitors will be able to get a permit for either the

02:06.18 – 02:12.30

entire park or everything excluding the popular Bear Lake Corridor, so that second permit

02:12.30 – 02:13.92

is going to be a bit more available.

02:13.92 – 02:18.98

If you don't land a permit or want some more spontaneity in your travels, in most

02:18.98 – 02:24.86

cases you can enter these parks early, like before 7am or late in the afternoon, usually

02:24.86 – 02:25.78

after 4pm.

02:26.06 – 02:30.90

They usually hold some reservations back until a few days beforehand, so if you aren't

02:30.90 – 02:35.08

able to snag one when those reservations open, you might have another chance.

02:35.62 – 02:40.44

Reservations for all parks that have reservations, and there are a few more, for the 2024 season

02:40.44 – 02:43.36

can be made on recreation.gov.

02:45.16 – 02:49.36

The National Park Service has announced a seven-year initiative to focus efforts on

02:49.36 – 02:54.26

hiring more women in law enforcement positions across the country, joining hundreds of other

02:54.26 – 02:58.76

law enforcement agencies and committing to increase female representation in our law

02:58.76 – 03:04.06

enforcement workforce by signing on to the 30 by 30 pledge, an initiative to advance

03:04.06 – 03:09.20

the representation and experiences of women in police agencies across the U.S., bringing

03:09.20 – 03:11.72

their levels up to 30% by 2023.

03:12.32 – 03:16.26

The Department of the Interior released a report from the Law Enforcement Task Force

03:16.26 – 03:21.54

recommending improvements to bureau law enforcement organizations, and in that report the task

03:21.54 – 03:26.66

force recommends agencies implement programs and initiatives to recruit and retain a diverse

03:26.66 – 03:27.18

workforce.

03:27.66 – 03:33.04

Women currently only represent 16% of the entire NPS law enforcement workforce.

03:33.64 – 03:37.86

With the pledge, the NPS is committing to almost doubling the number of female law enforcement

03:37.86 – 03:38.66

officers.

03:38.66 – 03:44.86

Back in 2021, the Park Service piloted a centralized hiring program designed to reduce those barriers

03:44.86 – 03:45.44

to entry.

03:45.92 – 03:50.66

After two years of centralized hiring, the Park Service is adapting its recruitment processes

03:50.66 – 03:52.94

to permanently implement the strategy.

03:53.30 – 03:59.52

Of the 100 new law enforcement rangers hired in fiscal year 2023, about 20% were women

03:59.52 – 04:01.90

and 25% were non-white.

04:02.74 – 04:07.34

Yellowstone National Park has announced that a mule deer buck inside the park's borders

04:07.34 – 04:10.36

has tested positive for chronic wasting disease.

04:10.84 – 04:15.44

It's the first positive for the park even though the disease is prevailing in the surrounding

04:15.44 – 04:16.12

areas.

04:16.28 – 04:21.24

The Wyoming Game and Fish Department tested the carcass of a radio-collared mule deer

04:21.24 – 04:25.30

that died in the southeastern section of the park near Yellowstone Lake.

04:25.68 – 04:31.24

CWD causes physiological and behavioral changes in infected animals that ultimately leads

04:31.24 – 04:33.18

to their emaciation and death.

04:33.60 – 04:37.04

It's a transmissible neurological disease similar to mad cow.

04:37.04 – 04:41.98

There's no effective way to eradicate chronic wasting disease once it's been established.

04:42.50 – 04:47.56

CWD is most common in white tail and mule deer, but it's also been detected in elk

04:47.56 – 04:49.62

and moose elsewhere in the country.

04:54.98 – 04:56.70

Ah, you hear that?

04:57.00 – 04:58.94

The sound of a crackling fire.

04:59.50 – 05:01.80

But this isn't just any old campfire.

05:02.30 – 05:05.66

This is a smokeless, solo-stove fire pit.

05:06.42 – 05:07.08

How can you tell?

05:07.30 – 05:12.28

Well, you don't hear any coughing, hand wafting, or people complaining about smoke

05:12.28 – 05:12.92

in their eyes.

05:13.10 – 05:18.96

All you can hear are logs turning to coals as the night sky becomes a cosmic canvas.

05:19.70 – 05:25.46

With Bonfire by Solo Stove, you get a fire pit that's portable, burns smoke off before

05:25.46 – 05:28.86

it ever leaves the pit, and is backed by a lifetime warranty.

05:42.40 – 05:47.16

Humpback whale season was winding down in icy strait at Glacier Bay National Park back

05:47.16 – 05:53.12

in October when a whale was found anchored to the seafloor entangled by a 300-pound crab

05:53.12 – 05:56.38

net with 450 feet of heavy-duty line.

05:56.90 – 05:59.82

It turned out the whale had been entangled for at least three days.

06:00.32 – 06:06.04

A rescue effort was authorized by NOAA's Alaska Large Whale Entanglement Response Team, but

06:06.04 – 06:10.42

gale-force winds were forecast for later in the week and daylight hours were short, and

06:10.42 – 06:14.80

then a perfect brief weather opening came with flat, calm seas and sunny skies.

06:15.18 – 06:19.92

The whale was making 7- to 9-minute dives and was at the surface for only about 30 seconds.

06:20.38 – 06:22.46

The footage from a drone soon revealed why.

06:22.46 – 06:26.36

The whale had a loop of line through its mouth that led to a large, heavy glob of tangled

06:26.36 – 06:27.90

lines at its tail.

06:28.32 – 06:34.24

In effect, the whale was hogtied, its body bent sharply to the side as it swam in a predictable

06:34.24 – 06:36.46

clockwise circle each time it came up.

06:36.70 – 06:41.32

The team worked with the whale all day until daylight was disappearing using specialized

06:41.32 – 06:45.52

tools to remove some of the gear while remaining at a distance from the whale.

06:45.70 – 06:50.62

The whale was freed, and after the team made the last cut, it disappeared, which the team

06:50.62 – 06:55.44

took as a good sign that it was no longer hampered by the lines and could rapidly swim away.

06:55.78 – 07:00.32

It was a tremendous effort that involved lots of coordination quickly, including flying

07:00.32 – 07:03.54

in multiple experts to help disentangle the stuck whale.

07:05.46 – 07:09.98

On November 1st, Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park welcomed National Park Service

07:09.98 – 07:14.60

leaders and the Johnson family to celebrate the groundbreaking for the Texas White House

07:14.60 – 07:18.38

Rehabilitation Project, funded by the Great American Outdoors Act.

07:18.94 – 07:24.46

After being closed to the public since 2018 due to structural and mold issues, rehabilitation

07:24.46 – 07:27.90

work at the Texas White House will now begin this January.

07:28.32 – 07:32.94

In the five years since its closure, Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park has coordinated

07:32.94 – 07:38.84

numerous environmental and structural investigations, mold remediation, conservation of historical

07:38.84 – 07:44.00

artifacts, a year-and-a-half-long design process, and then a value analysis that confirmed the

07:44.00 – 07:45.80

optimal solutions for rehabilitation.

07:46.72 – 07:50.48

The complex is anticipated to reopen to the public in late 2025.

07:50.80 – 07:54.06

You can still go there and tour, you just can't go in the house.

07:54.16 – 07:56.64

They have a lot going on there, it's still worth a visit.

07:56.98 – 08:01.18

The construction will complete in 2025, and the buildings can then be restaged.

08:01.44 – 08:06.12

They're also updating the interpretive experience in the hangar, and a lot of other stuff that's

08:06.12 – 08:07.98

going to be incorporated well into the future.

08:09.10 – 08:13.96

After a year full of challenges, Olympic National Park has announced that the Hurricane Ridge

08:13.96 – 08:19.02

Road and Recreation Area will open for the winter season on the day after Thanksgiving.

08:19.66 – 08:22.80

During the closure, work crews have tackled multiple construction projects.

08:22.92 – 08:27.68

A restroom trailer and visitor contact station have been installed and connected to utilities.

08:27.92 – 08:32.26

By the end of the closure, crews will have completed utility trenching and the demolition

08:32.26 – 08:35.26

and removal of the Hurricane Ridge Day Lodge debris.

08:35.74 – 08:42.34

Back on May 7th at 4.30 p.m., a law enforcement ranger on patrol reported that the 1,200-square-foot

08:42.34 – 08:45.38

Hurricane Ridge Day Lodge was fully engulfed in flames.

08:45.96 – 08:49.56

It was completely gone by the time fire crews even arrived.

08:50.18 – 08:52.86

In the wintertime, the lodge had rented out snowshoes and skis.

08:53.24 – 08:57.08

That stuff's not going to be available, but weather permitting, Hurricane Ridge Road is

08:57.08 – 09:02.16

scheduled to be open on Friday, Saturdays, and Sundays through March 31st, 2024.

09:02.86 – 09:07.82

Visitors should be prepared to use their vehicles as a warming area and pack extra food, water,

09:08.22 – 09:10.22

dry clothing, and blankets or sleeping bags.

09:10.22 – 09:14.82

There will be no indoor warming area, there's no food service, no potable water, or gear

09:14.82 – 09:15.52

rentals at all.

09:15.78 – 09:18.90

On the days that it's open, Hurricane Ridge Road will open at 9 a.m.

09:18.96 – 09:23.74

Weather permitting, the road will be closed to uphill traffic at 4 o'clock and vehicles

09:23.74 – 09:27.50

must exit the heart of the hills entrance station by 5 p.m.

09:27.54 – 09:32.56

All vehicles, including those with four-wheel drive, will be required to carry tire chains.

09:33.82 – 09:39.24

Three-year-old Journey Castillo has achieved the feat of visiting all 63 U.S. national

09:39.24 – 09:42.72

parks, likely becoming the youngest person in history to do so.

09:43.26 – 09:46.42

Okay, well, she didn't actually do much, but her parents did.

09:46.86 – 09:52.02

Journey was born in late 2020 during the heart of the COVID-19 pandemic to parents Eric and

09:52.02 – 09:56.92

Valerie Castillo, who are avid hikers, and the family's adventure began as a pandemic

09:56.92 – 10:00.86

getaway but soon turned into a passion for visiting all the national parks.

10:00.96 – 10:05.98

The Castillos hailed from San Antonio, Texas, starting Journey's travels shortly after her

10:05.98 – 10:07.00

birth in 2020.

10:07.00 – 10:11.02

Their first trip was to Pikes Peak and Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado.

10:11.58 – 10:14.98

That marked the beginning of what would become a three-year adventure spanning the entirety

10:14.98 – 10:15.68

of the U.S.

10:16.08 – 10:20.10

The Castillos are well aware that Journey probably won't remember much of anything

10:20.10 – 10:24.54

of her trips, but wanted to instill in their young child a love for the outdoors and for

10:24.54 – 10:28.76

adventure and plan to revisit all the parks with her when she's older.

10:29.82 – 10:31.94

That's it for this month's National Park News Roundup.

10:32.00 – 10:35.46

If you aren't subscribed to the podcast yet, please take a moment to do so and we'll

10:35.46 – 10:36.82

see you on the next episode.

10:37.02 – 10:37.52

Thanks, everybody.

10:37.74 – 10:37.96

Bye-bye.
