00:19.86 – 00:23.38

Welcome to Pod Save America. I'm Jon Favreau. I'm Jon Lovett. I'm Tommy Vittor. I'm Dan

00:23.38 – 00:23.62

Pfeiffer.

00:23.76 – 00:25.12

Gang's all here. Here we are.

00:25.34 – 00:26.28

Well, Dan's on Zoom.

00:26.38 – 00:26.70

Sort of.

00:26.88 – 00:27.12

Sort of.

00:27.28 – 00:27.60

Tough.

00:28.28 – 00:32.88

On today's show, Nikki Haley concedes to Trump but doesn't endorse. Dean Phillips concedes

00:32.88 – 00:37.30

to Joe Biden and does endorse. Adam Schiff is headed to the Senate. North Carolina Republicans

00:37.30 – 00:41.48

nominate a Holocaust denier for governor. And Joe Biden prepares for his biggest speech

00:41.48 – 00:46.90

of the year. But first, Super Tuesday told us what's been obvious for a very long time.

00:47.24 – 00:52.18

President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are headed for a November rematch that

00:52.18 – 00:53.26

no one asked for.

00:54.82 – 00:56.14

It's happening, guys.

00:56.32 – 00:56.82

It's happening.

00:58.50 – 01:03.50

We started a podcast eight years ago talking about Donald Trump. Eight years later, here

01:03.50 – 01:03.88

we are.

01:04.12 – 01:05.14

You know, still running for president.

01:05.24 – 01:06.02

I think we've slowed him down.

01:06.16 – 01:07.12

I think we've slowed him down, though.

01:08.56 – 01:10.96

I think there's not as much air in those tires.

01:11.18 – 01:15.34

All right. So on Super Tuesday, Biden won every contest but the caucuses in American

01:15.34 – 01:21.84

Samoa. Talk about that soon. And has won every state and every delegate but 10. He's now

01:21.84 – 01:26.20

just a few hundred delegates away from officially clinching the nomination. Trump won every

01:26.20 – 01:30.22

Super Tuesday contest but Vermont and is also just a few hundred delegates away from

01:30.22 – 01:34.92

clinching, which he will because he's now the only Republican candidate left in the

01:34.92 – 01:39.88

race. Nikki Haley suspended her campaign this morning but declined to endorse Trump in

01:39.88 – 01:41.70

her concession speech. Let's listen.

01:42.70 – 01:47.10

I am filled with the gratitude for the outpouring of support we've received from all

01:47.10 – 01:48.60

across our great country.

01:49.20 – 01:52.94

But the time has now come to suspend my campaign.

01:53.94 – 01:56.70

I said I wanted Americans to have their voices heard.

01:57.24 – 01:58.38

I have done that.

01:58.96 – 02:00.56

I have no regrets.

02:01.62 – 02:06.32

In all likelihood, Donald Trump will be the Republican nominee when our party convention

02:06.32 – 02:07.24

meets in July.

02:07.84 – 02:10.56

I congratulate him and wish him well.

02:11.38 – 02:14.30

I wish anyone well who would be America's president.

02:14.80 – 02:20.30

I have always been a conservative Republican and always supported the Republican nominee.

02:20.98 – 02:27.72

But on this question, as she did on so many others, Margaret Thatcher provided some good

02:27.72 – 02:32.58

advice when she said, quote, Never just follow the crowd.

02:33.26 – 02:35.50

Always make up your own mind.

02:36.30 – 02:41.64

It is now up to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and beyond it who did

02:41.64 – 02:44.60

not support him. And I hope he does that.

02:44.94 – 02:47.70

This is now his time for choosing.

02:47.70 – 02:50.90

So do we do we consider the boats burned?

02:50.96 – 02:53.02

Is that the non endorsement we were hoping for?

02:53.50 – 02:54.78

What do we think? Love it.

02:55.38 – 03:01.42

Here. If you say it is now to Donald Trump to earn the votes of those in our party and

03:01.42 – 03:03.02

beyond it who did not support him.

03:03.10 – 03:04.26

And I hope he does that.

03:04.58 – 03:07.96

If you're saying, I hope Donald Trump earns everyone's vote.

03:09.48 – 03:11.16

What exactly is she hoping for?

03:11.22 – 03:13.26

Because it sounds like she's hoping that he wins the president.

03:13.74 – 03:16.52

Hoping that I guess he has a personality transplant to them.

03:16.52 – 03:19.98

Yeah. He suddenly changes his his ways to build that big tent.

03:20.14 – 03:22.20

Yeah. Finally going to change.

03:22.36 – 03:24.92

Yeah. Seventy seven years old.

03:25.08 – 03:26.60

She hopes she turns over a new leaf.

03:26.96 – 03:31.44

The thing that I feel like just I've seen a bunch of people talking about this speech and, you

03:31.44 – 03:32.70

know, has she burned the ships or not?

03:32.76 – 03:33.98

Will she endorse it? Will she won't?

03:34.26 – 03:40.08

It is truly amazing that she has been running against Donald Trump for a year, running hard

03:40.08 – 03:42.60

for three months. We have absolutely no idea what she thinks.

03:43.40 – 03:45.44

We don't know what she thinks. We don't know what she actually thinks.

03:45.44 – 03:47.56

Sort of been the case for her entire political career.

03:47.70 – 03:51.28

Dan, it's I don't I'm not going to make a prediction whether she's going to endorse or not

03:51.28 – 03:53.26

endorse. Coward.

03:53.34 – 03:56.66

Oh, on the eight year anniversary, we're going to bring predictions back into the podcast.

03:58.58 – 03:59.70

Exactly. Hillary's going to win.

04:00.32 – 04:03.08

She's leaving herself the option to do it.

04:03.56 – 04:05.00

But he's obviously not going to earn the votes of anyone.

04:05.12 – 04:09.32

I think in his statement, his truth about this, he called her bird brain and said she did

04:09.32 – 04:11.82

really poorly and then asked her supporters to vote for him.

04:11.92 – 04:14.64

So I'm not sure it's a low bar she's setting.

04:15.58 – 04:18.40

Yeah, like I thought it was better than an endorsement.

04:18.52 – 04:23.06

Sure. But not as good as a non endorsement where she took a few more shots at Trump.

04:23.26 – 04:24.46

That's what I would say. Tommy, what did you think?

04:24.80 – 04:28.16

Yeah, listen, first of all, Maggie Thatcher, shout out right here.

04:28.24 – 04:32.88

Good for her. You know, look to me, she's a world of through and through at her core.

04:33.04 – 04:34.76

She knows really how to appeal to the core.

04:34.98 – 04:35.94

She knows the Republican Party.

04:36.26 – 04:42.06

Yeah, it sounded to me like she was setting up a process for her to come back to the fold

04:42.06 – 04:44.70

and endorse. She wants to make it bigger.

04:44.70 – 04:48.22

About her supporters and not herself, because she, of course, not about her.

04:48.34 – 04:49.14

It's about the country, John.

04:49.72 – 04:53.54

So I think she'll probably at some point pretend that Trump has changed or improved.

04:54.18 – 04:58.04

She will. Joe Biden will do something that a bunch of establishment Republicans will

04:58.98 – 05:01.44

arbitrarily decide is unforgivable.

05:01.74 – 05:02.94

And they'll all give more people health care.

05:03.14 – 05:08.00

So almost certainly people calling for a ceasefire in Gaza, the thing that says it right

05:08.00 – 05:14.14

in Trump's camp. It's also telling that, as she was saying, like, I hope Donald Trump

05:14.14 – 05:16.40

does whatever he can to earn the votes of my supporters.

05:16.56 – 05:20.82

He was putting out the statement he wanted to put out, dinging her, that he wrote before

05:20.82 – 05:24.34

she spoke, but didn't get it out in time so that he could get a statement out saying, I

05:24.34 – 05:25.44

hope she never fucking quits.

05:25.52 – 05:29.74

I hate this woman. And then the campaign puts it out and just puts a little note that

05:29.74 – 05:31.98

says, just so you guys know, it was from before she started speaking.

05:32.06 – 05:34.74

That's when he wrote it. But we didn't get it out in time, but we wanted to put it out

05:34.74 – 05:39.90

anyway. I'm looking forward to the unity event in Unity, New Hampshire, her convention

05:39.90 – 05:43.84

speech. Or maybe she'll do the Ted Cruz vote your conscience at the convention.

05:43.84 – 05:48.94

And then go ahead and vote for her. Who knows? Dan, can you talk about your message box

05:48.94 – 05:52.38

takeaway from last night that Haley's candidacy helps Biden in the general?

05:52.70 – 05:56.26

Yeah, I think when you look back on this, Nikki Haley never had a shot to beat Donald

05:56.26 – 05:59.90

Trump. But what happened is the Koch brothers spent almost one hundred million dollars to

05:59.90 – 06:05.02

fund a sophisticated, persuadable voter I.D. program for Joe Biden, right?

06:05.14 – 06:08.96

All across Koch brothers, that's like we all of them.

06:08.96 – 06:11.16

We always say here, there's only one left.

06:11.36 – 06:16.24

There's one that the Koch brother and the Koch Koch organization, the Koch Kochs.

06:16.34 – 06:17.78

Well, I do think the dead one is happy.

06:17.84 – 06:19.20

And I was happy to be part of it.

06:19.32 – 06:20.86

I mean, yeah, I can thank him.

06:20.90 – 06:23.00

It's still his money. That's the one who bought all the fake wine.

06:23.14 – 06:24.70

It's a great documentary. Anyway, continue.

06:25.00 – 06:25.34

Sorry.

06:26.18 – 06:29.86

What I mean, basically, when you look at this, there's been this little pushback over the

06:29.86 – 06:35.54

last few days or so about this idea that Haley voters are potential or a demonstration of

06:35.54 – 06:40.50

weakness for Trump, because in the New York Times Siena poll, a near majority of her

06:40.50 – 06:42.70

supporters voted for Biden in 2020.

06:43.74 – 06:46.60

And so it's like so people are like, so see, Trump is never going to get those voters

06:46.60 – 06:49.50

anyway if they're telling exit pollsters they're not going to vote for Trump because they

06:49.50 – 06:52.14

never were. That's because a bunch of Democrats came into the primary.

06:52.76 – 06:55.26

I think that's idiocy for two reasons.

06:55.40 – 07:00.84

One, it's only half of her voters, but also the people that Biden needs are the people

07:00.84 – 07:04.92

who voted for Trump in 2016, Biden in 2020 and now don't know what they're going to do.

07:04.92 – 07:08.32

These exact kind of Republican leading independents who vote in Republican primaries.

07:08.42 – 07:09.94

It's just a pure numbers game.

07:09.94 – 07:11.60

Right. Take Michigan. Right.

07:11.68 – 07:16.64

There were 300,000, almost 300,000 people who voted for Nikki Haley in that primary.

07:17.40 – 07:21.18

And so let's say just let's just pretend that half of them were always going to vote for

07:21.18 – 07:24.68

Biden. They were just they just wanted to play in an open primary because they wanted to

07:24.68 – 07:26.96

just pull one over on Trump.

07:27.40 – 07:32.44

But then you still have 150,000 voters, some portion of whom are open to Biden.

07:32.44 – 07:38.22

And in the exit polling we've seen upwards of 60 percent to three quarters of Nikki Haley

07:38.22 – 07:40.66

voters who say they will not commit to voting for the nominee.

07:40.78 – 07:45.38

So that is 150,000 voters in Michigan that Joe Biden can target.

07:45.92 – 07:47.58

And you know what Joe Biden won Michigan by in 2020?

07:48.04 – 07:49.02

150,000 votes.

07:49.26 – 07:53.18

So it's just these are voters that the Biden folks can go get in his camp.

07:53.46 – 07:54.64

They can track them down.

07:54.70 – 07:56.40

They now have eight months to persuade them.

07:56.74 – 08:00.46

And Donald Trump is helping them by saying things like non-MAGA people are not welcome

08:00.46 – 08:02.06

in this party. So I just think.

08:02.06 – 08:05.56

This is she is given a little bit of a road map and I need a whole bunch of voters that

08:05.56 – 08:06.56

the Biden votes can go get.

08:06.66 – 08:09.26

And I think that's been very helpful to him, even though I'm sure that was not her

08:09.26 – 08:10.68

intent. Dan, can I do a question about this?

08:10.72 – 08:13.28

Because I was thinking about this when I was reading your message box, as I do every

08:13.28 – 08:15.22

morning, as like almost like a prayer ritual.

08:17.36 – 08:21.56

So you see, like in the exit polls, you see this sort of weakness that there are a ton

08:21.56 – 08:25.14

of Haley voters, including Republican Haley voters, that just say they won't vote for

08:25.14 – 08:28.66

Trump or their open divide and just shows like a real weakness that Donald Trump has.

08:28.66 – 08:30.58

And then you look at like the polls that just came in.

08:30.94 – 08:35.14

And if you if you were wondering who has done a better job of consolidating their own

08:35.14 – 08:36.32

party, it's actually Trump. Right.

08:36.36 – 08:40.92

Like Biden's in the 80s and Trump has in the 90s among Republicans.

08:42.04 – 08:46.28

Is that like is that just the difference between these two electorates?

08:46.30 – 08:50.58

Is that the difference between people that like how do you explain that difference?

08:50.84 – 08:56.06

Yeah. How do you how do you square in The New York Times poll like 48 percent of Haley

08:56.06 – 09:02.84

voters saying they were Biden 2020 voters, but then Trump winning 96 percent of his

09:02.84 – 09:04.22

2020 vote, which is the high one.

09:04.28 – 09:06.22

Right. Like 90, 90, 94 or 96.

09:06.38 – 09:07.56

I think I'm talking to your time.

09:07.58 – 09:11.68

Yeah. So of so it's 48 percent of Haley supporters say they voted for Biden.

09:12.02 – 09:14.80

Thirty one percent who say they voted for Trump and the rest are people who either

09:14.80 – 09:17.60

declined to answer or most likely did not vote in 2020.

09:18.06 – 09:21.82

So when you're dealing with a margin of error, that math actually works out OK, that

09:21.82 – 09:26.46

you have a couple percent of Trump's voters who have voted for Haley in the primary or

09:26.46 – 09:29.34

who may be unwilling to vote for him in the general.

09:29.62 – 09:30.52

And so those are the people you'll get.

09:30.62 – 09:32.82

We're talking everything's happening on the margins here.

09:32.90 – 09:38.46

Right. Trump has obviously done a better job of consolidating his overall base.

09:38.88 – 09:43.00

Biden has done a better job of consolidating primary voters than Trump has.

09:43.14 – 09:46.44

And you see that in the poll where they ask people if you voted in the New York Times

09:46.44 – 09:50.84

or you voted in a primary in a midterm, then Biden actually was was up by one point

09:50.84 – 09:52.10

among that group of people.

09:52.36 – 09:56.14

It's when you the further you get out among Trump voters, the better he does.

09:56.28 – 10:00.40

But the hardest core people are some or most the most regular Republicans are ones he's

10:00.40 – 10:02.92

struggling with and those people that Joe Biden can go get.

10:03.08 – 10:09.36

Look, in an election like this, you're trying to go get if you could find 15000 votes in

10:09.36 – 10:13.16

Michigan, the people who voted for Haley, who either didn't vote in 2020 or voted for

10:13.16 – 10:16.66

Trump in 2020, that that could be enough to win this race.

10:16.68 – 10:18.26

Right. Like so that's why I think it helps.

10:18.98 – 10:24.54

Yeah, I think it we we don't know how many Haley voters supported Biden in 2020.

10:24.72 – 10:25.76

We just like no polling.

10:26.02 – 10:30.06

But one thing that keeps coming up and that has for like a year, a couple of years now

10:30.06 – 10:34.74

is there is about 30 percent of Republicans who say they don't like Donald Trump, believe

10:34.74 – 10:39.84

that Joe Biden won the 2020 election, tell pollsters that he shouldn't be president if

10:39.84 – 10:44.40

he's convicted. So there's like there's like 30 percent of Republicans out there who

10:44.40 – 10:46.72

are at least potentially persuadable.

10:46.72 – 10:51.02

Right. I think that's what we've learned from both Haley's candidacy and everything that

10:51.02 – 10:53.00

people have told pollsters for the last several years now.

10:53.08 – 10:56.86

Right. And right now, if you look at the other polls about the general, two thirds of

10:56.86 – 10:58.74

those voters are saying they're coming home.

10:58.86 – 11:00.82

But a big chunk of those people are gettable.

11:01.04 – 11:04.84

One thing before we move on from Haley, I just I have to point out that in that fun

11:04.84 – 11:08.08

little period between results coming in and her dropping out where there's a bunch of

11:08.08 – 11:14.52

reporting, her spokeswoman sent a statement to Politico saying that Haley was watching

11:14.52 – 11:17.32

the results with staff and quote, the mood is jubilant.

11:18.46 – 11:23.34

And I just love that because rarely do you see bullshit printed quite that directly

11:23.34 – 11:26.02

because, you know, clearly it was not jubilant when you're only winning Vermont.

11:26.20 – 11:27.70

Tommy, I don't know what the fuck you're talking about.

11:28.24 – 11:31.84

They could have been jubilant that the campaign's over and they don't have to work hard

11:31.84 – 11:32.90

anymore. That's a very good.

11:32.96 – 11:33.88

Also, I take it back.

11:33.96 – 11:36.20

They were expecting to win zero contests and they won one.

11:36.64 – 11:37.76

So I'm sure they're excited.

11:38.48 – 11:41.98

We gave a little short shrift to Vermont, Vermont, Vermont, Victoria, Vermont.

11:42.74 – 11:45.86

All right. So the overwhelming majority of Republican voters got their preferred

11:45.86 – 11:50.18

candidate for president, a criminal defendant facing 91 felony charges that include

11:50.18 – 11:53.78

trying to overturn an election he lost in last night's victory speech.

11:53.84 – 11:59.06

Trump dispensed his trademark optimism from the scene of one of his crimes at Mar-a-Lago.

11:59.06 – 12:00.90

We're going to stop and we're going to close our borders.

12:01.02 – 12:05.30

We're going to have to deport a lot of people, a lot of bad people, because our countries

12:05.30 – 12:09.22

can't live like this. Our cities, our cities are choking to death.

12:09.22 – 12:10.70

Our states are dying.

12:10.94 – 12:13.04

And frankly, our country is dying.

12:13.28 – 12:18.42

And we're going to make America great again, greater than ever before.

12:19.08 – 12:20.30

Thank you very much.

12:20.38 – 12:22.20

Been a big night. Thank you very much.

12:22.50 – 12:23.22

Thank you.

12:23.30 – 12:24.58

How's that for a general election message?

12:24.68 – 12:25.98

Our country is dying.

12:26.22 – 12:29.70

Low energy. And I'd say I was I just found it so distasteful that CNN took the whole

12:29.70 – 12:29.98

speech.

12:32.06 – 12:34.08

That's like the American carnage message.

12:34.22 – 12:35.10

It's very dark.

12:35.34 – 12:36.08

Very dark.

12:36.32 – 12:39.06

Very dark. And the low energy plus the dark.

12:39.22 – 12:44.18

The darkness of the message was interesting to me, because at his rallies, he's like

12:44.18 – 12:45.20

having a good time.

12:45.26 – 12:47.28

He's a comedian. He's saying crazy shit.

12:47.94 – 12:49.84

It was he was very subdued last night.

12:50.16 – 12:52.36

Yeah. Not not the I'm sure the Iowa guy.

12:52.58 – 12:55.56

Well, I'm sure it was like, hey, Iowa, you were gracious.

12:55.84 – 12:56.86

New Hampshire, you were an asshole.

12:56.86 – 12:58.36

Just try to be on message here.

12:58.68 – 13:01.96

So he tried to be on message, which he's always he's always looking bored when he's on

13:01.96 – 13:02.74

message. Yeah, true.

13:03.24 – 13:07.86

Did the primary results and exit polls from last night tell you guys anything else about

13:07.86 – 13:10.20

Trump's strengths or weaknesses heading into the general?

13:10.72 – 13:12.52

Dan, you had anything? Yeah, I think it's this.

13:12.68 – 13:17.16

There's been a consistent story from Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Michigan,

13:17.16 – 13:18.98

which is there's a group of voters.

13:19.38 – 13:21.42

Most of the men have voted for Haley that he struggles with.

13:21.44 – 13:22.46

It's college educated Republicans.

13:22.88 – 13:24.00

It's people in the suburbs.

13:24.50 – 13:27.62

It's people who don't believe in the big lie, which is a problem for Trump nationally

13:27.62 – 13:29.42

because the majority of voters don't believe the big lie.

13:29.50 – 13:31.72

He's losing those voters by 60 points in some cases.

13:31.96 – 13:33.48

And so there is this group of people.

13:33.56 – 13:36.96

It's a 30 percent you identified that that that has persisted through this.

13:36.96 – 13:41.28

And even there are some who are voting from the primary here indicating some reservations

13:41.28 – 13:42.92

about it, particularly convicted for a crime.

13:43.06 – 13:48.66

So it's just it is a story of a dominant performance among the MAGA base and some real

13:48.66 – 13:50.66

weakness against non MAGA voters.

13:50.82 – 13:53.50

And we're not a MAGA majority country, so that's not great for him.

13:54.26 – 13:58.90

Yeah, we also just saw that there's a super PAC that was a pro Haley super PAC that has

13:58.90 – 14:01.12

rebranded as Haley voters for Biden.

14:01.44 – 14:02.44

So they spent some money.

14:02.52 – 14:04.24

So it seems like also making Trump's point.

14:06.96 – 14:09.32

So give give him give him give him one point there.

14:09.40 – 14:13.08

I do one couple of strengths that Donald Trump has going into the general.

14:13.38 – 14:17.72

The entire Republican establishment is behind him, including we just found out this

14:17.72 – 14:22.76

morning that Mitch McConnell has embarrassing, has just decided to back him.

14:23.38 – 14:27.76

Donald Trump is a challenger in an environment where last time an incumbent president won

14:27.76 – 14:33.02

reelection was 12 years ago because the country has been you know, voters have been

14:33.02 – 14:36.94

pretty upset. And so that's that's what Joe Biden's dealing with.

14:36.96 – 14:40.20

But again, weaknesses, suburbs, moderates, Haley voters.

14:40.88 – 14:44.16

And I think it's good to you know, Donald Trump starts 40,000 voters in the hole.

14:44.28 – 14:46.42

That's what he lost by in 2020.

14:46.42 – 14:50.46

So he can't afford to lose a bunch of voters, even a couple Republican voters here and

14:50.46 – 14:54.02

there. Yeah. I mean, but to your point about the sort of anti incumbent sentiment, I did

14:54.02 – 14:59.56

notice that 55 percent of California primary voters rated the economy negatively,

14:59.80 – 15:01.98

including 66 percent of independents.

15:02.06 – 15:03.52

So that's a big headwind for Joe Biden.

15:04.14 – 15:09.04

There are, you know, 66 percent of California independents disapprove of Biden's handling

15:09.04 – 15:12.68

of the job. Trump is beating Biden by eight points when it comes to job approval with

15:12.68 – 15:16.18

California independents. Again, that's just like one snapshot based on the California

15:16.18 – 15:20.48

exit polls. But it shows the challenges of being an incumbent right now.

15:20.82 – 15:27.22

Yeah. And other weaknesses for Trump, I think they all the felony charges should be

15:27.22 – 15:30.62

witnesses. He's just he's he is unpopular still.

15:30.62 – 15:35.78

He's like he's he's he's a little more popular than he has been, but he's still a pretty

15:35.78 – 15:40.24

unpopular guy. And of course, his lack of discipline and penchant for saying crazy

15:40.24 – 15:43.08

shit. I think that's that's a weakness as well.

15:55.14 – 15:58.74

So before we get to Biden in the general election strategy, let's run through some of

15:58.74 – 16:00.94

the other notable results from Tuesday night.

16:01.54 – 16:03.84

Adam Schiff is most likely headed to the U.S.

16:03.92 – 16:08.08

Senate. He finished first in California's top two primary and will face Republican Steve

16:08.08 – 16:12.92

Garvey in November, though it shouldn't be much of a race because of California's voter

16:12.92 – 16:17.96

registration. Katie Porter and Barbara Lee came in third and fourth with much less of

16:17.96 – 16:19.76

the vote than the polls had suggested.

16:20.24 – 16:24.20

Any thoughts on how Schiff was able to dominate this primary money?

16:24.80 – 16:29.10

He had like 40 million dollars in a state that's just absurdly expensive to run in to

16:29.10 – 16:33.74

begin with. And they had so much money, the Schiff team, that they could spend like

16:33.74 – 16:38.58

between 11 and 15 million dollars boosting Steve Garvey, the Republican who he will now

16:38.58 – 16:40.38

run against, including running ads on Fox News.

16:40.94 – 16:42.88

But then he also could run pro Schiff ads.

16:42.94 – 16:44.36

He could run anti Katie Porter ads.

16:44.98 – 16:48.68

And Schiff ended up doing more campaigning for Garvey than Garvey did for himself.

16:48.84 – 16:50.78

I think he spent like one point five million dollars.

16:50.90 – 16:52.10

He barely did events.

16:52.62 – 16:56.36

Schiff also had a bunch of institutional support, like Pelosi loves Adam Schiff.

16:56.60 – 16:57.72

She helped him raise money.

16:58.24 – 17:00.18

She elevated his profile in the House.

17:00.54 – 17:04.82

Republicans gave Schiff an in-kind contribution when they censured him, which made him,

17:04.88 – 17:07.66

you know, a star on MSNBC.

17:08.04 – 17:11.32

And, you know, I think Porter and Barbara Lee split the progressive vote.

17:11.64 – 17:15.82

But as you said, even combining their vote totals would not have gotten them where they

17:15.82 – 17:17.12

needed to be to make the runoff.

17:17.12 – 17:21.88

So, yeah, I do think also like being a chief Trump antagonist in a state as big as

17:21.88 – 17:25.20

California, where it takes millions and millions and millions of dollars just to get

17:25.20 – 17:30.52

people to know who you are, was a pretty tough, pretty tough uphill climb for anyone who

17:30.52 – 17:36.14

wasn't Schiff and a chief Trump antagonist in a time where the most powerful

17:36.14 – 17:39.34

motivating force for Democrats has been Donald Trump.

17:39.48 – 17:44.90

Right. That is what has gotten Democrats to the polls from 18 on every single election.

17:44.90 – 17:48.76

And when you are the guy that just takes it to Trump all the time and is seen as taking it

17:48.76 – 17:50.92

to Trump, then that's going to benefit you.

17:51.16 – 17:54.04

In other down-ballot news, the Senate map is just about set.

17:54.32 – 17:58.42

Colin Allred will face Ted Cruz in Texas, and it'll be Ruben Gallego versus Carrie

17:58.42 – 18:02.96

Lakin, Arizona, because Kyrsten Sinema has announced her retirement.

18:05.14 – 18:06.44

We'll get there. We'll get there.

18:07.00 – 18:11.08

In the North Carolina governor's race, Democrat Josh Stein will face Republican Mark

18:11.08 – 18:13.32

Robinson. You haven't heard of him before.

18:13.32 – 18:15.92

He's he's the lieutenant governor right now.

18:16.04 – 18:21.04

He's a Hitler-quoting Holocaust denier who is called being gay, a filthy abomination

18:21.04 – 18:25.42

that marks the end of civilization and said that school shootings are karma for abortion.

18:26.16 – 18:28.22

Trump has called Robinson Martin Luther King Jr.

18:28.32 – 18:29.08

on steroids.

18:30.60 – 18:31.76

Sounds like a nice guy.

18:32.00 – 18:34.06

What should we do? A little greatest hits of Mark Robinson oppo.

18:34.18 – 18:34.88

You got some others? Yeah.

18:35.30 – 18:40.38

So I want to flag that first one, the Martin Luther King comparison, because Robinson likes

18:40.38 – 18:41.80

to attack Martin Luther King Jr.

18:41.86 – 18:42.98

and the civil rights movement.

18:42.98 – 18:44.70

So he's actually criticizing him there.

18:44.88 – 18:48.80

Trump. Robinson voiced support for passing, quote, a bill saying you can't have an

18:48.80 – 18:52.74

abortion in North Carolina for any reason called abortion, murder and genocide.

18:53.06 – 18:55.40

He refused to commit to protecting IVF.

18:55.58 – 18:57.88

He called public school teachers, quote, wicked people.

18:58.12 – 19:00.08

You mentioned the Holocaust, calling it hogwash.

19:00.50 – 19:02.84

You got really mad on Facebook about the movie Black Panther.

19:03.24 – 19:04.48

Yeah, I was very upset about Black Panther.

19:04.72 – 19:09.18

And said the character was, quote, created by an agnostic Jew and put to film by

19:09.18 – 19:14.18

satanic Marxists and only created to pull the shekels out of your schwarz pockets.

19:14.66 – 19:15.64

Yeah. Do that right. Yeah.

19:15.70 – 19:17.82

That's a well, it's an epithet for black people.

19:19.08 – 19:24.50

So, yeah, it's, you know, Black Panther is a conspiracy by Jews to trick black people

19:24.50 – 19:25.74

into, I guess, having a good time.

19:28.22 – 19:31.32

The hogwash quote, the first part of that, because I saw the whole Facebook post.

19:31.86 – 19:33.34

It's from March of twenty eighteen.

19:33.50 – 19:35.46

Man spent a lot of time on Facebook in twenty eighteen.

19:35.60 – 19:36.62

A lot of time. Wow.

19:36.62 – 19:41.60

It's, quote, this foolishness about Hitler disarming millions of Jews and then marching

19:41.60 – 19:44.78

them off to concentration camps is a bunch of hogwash.

19:45.46 – 19:47.26

He also that's the post.

19:47.40 – 19:51.98

He also referred to the post, just in case you think libs are just exaggerating.

19:52.14 – 19:53.58

Yeah, no. In context, these are all worse.

19:53.70 – 19:59.22

He also referred to the students at Marjory Stone Douglas as spoiled, angry, know-it-all

19:59.22 – 20:02.74

children, silly little immature media prostitutes.

20:02.86 – 20:04.40

That's a child prostitute.

20:05.00 – 20:09.08

And this one, it's, listen, it's been a very serious and terrible situation.

20:09.62 – 20:15.50

But after the Boko Haram kidnappings in twenty, twenty fourteen, he posted on Facebook.

20:16.32 – 20:19.28

It's not funny. George Soros stole them girls.

20:19.56 – 20:22.30

I can't. I'm sorry. Jesus Christ.

20:22.94 – 20:29.34

The folks at the DGA wanted us to remind you to text NC to 30201 to help Democratic

20:29.34 – 20:30.48

governors win North Carolina.

20:30.68 – 20:33.54

Yeah, that's important. That's important because here's where we stop laughing.

20:33.54 – 20:36.32

Race is tied. Josh Stein is real bad.

20:36.38 – 20:38.98

Josh Stein is the Democratic attorney general in North Carolina.

20:39.10 – 20:40.28

Dan, what do you think about this race?

20:40.76 – 20:44.78

I fucking hope Josh Stein can win because if not, we're in real trouble.

20:45.64 – 20:47.32

Quite a set up for that. What do you think?

20:47.54 – 20:49.30

What do you think? So get him those shekels.

20:49.50 – 20:57.14

I mean, it is a it's a situation in North Carolina where Mark Robinson does have, even

20:57.14 – 21:02.02

though he's a fucking loony kook, he has a lot of name ID because he is lieutenant

21:02.02 – 21:05.46

governor. Yeah, this guy's already the lieutenant governor of North Carolina.

21:05.66 – 21:07.04

He's not just walking in off of Facebook.

21:07.24 – 21:09.36

Now, Josh Stein has run statewide also.

21:09.52 – 21:12.20

So he is, you know, he's a statewide figure as well as attorney general.

21:12.40 – 21:14.46

But who is it cool to be a kook in North Carolina?

21:14.46 – 21:18.68

Wasn't the Outer Banks, the kooks in the who are you thinking of the TV, the TV show,

21:18.74 – 21:20.34

the Outer Banks? The Pogues were cool.

21:20.62 – 21:21.40

My bad. Sorry.

21:21.54 – 21:23.06

Yeah, I watch TV.

21:23.26 – 21:26.76

Someone get a compilation of Tommy's dad jokes for for for New Year's.

21:26.76 – 21:29.14

So for the New Year's resolution, it's topical, timely.

21:30.24 – 21:32.22

It's a pandemic era Netflix show.

21:32.56 – 21:33.44

Yes, it's timely.

21:33.66 – 21:34.86

It's very timely. How dare you?

21:35.04 – 21:36.10

I always love go for it.

21:36.20 – 21:38.48

Anyway, anyway, got to help Josh Stein, everyone.

21:38.60 – 21:41.72

Yes. Come on. This is bad, bad, bad, bad, bad.

21:42.14 – 21:44.04

Everyone thoughts on Allred versus Cruz.

21:44.62 – 21:48.92

I think it's tough for Allred in a presidential electorate environment.

21:49.86 – 21:54.04

But, you know, poll so far, limited polling, but polls so far show him somewhat close to

21:54.04 – 21:56.10

Cruz. Yeah, look, Ted Cruz absolutely sucks.

21:56.20 – 21:57.06

People hate his guts.

21:57.06 – 22:00.48

He motivates Democrats in a way that very few other down ballot races will.

22:01.04 – 22:02.94

Colin Allred is a really good guy.

22:03.02 – 22:05.14

He's a super interesting bio, played in the NFL.

22:05.52 – 22:07.62

He's from Texas, played college football there, too.

22:08.28 – 22:12.22

He's really smart and thoughtful and a compelling speaker and was great on this show in

22:12.22 – 22:13.30

particular. So I don't know.

22:13.60 – 22:14.88

He's someone we'd love to have in the Senate.

22:15.26 – 22:16.68

Excited about it. At some point.

22:16.68 – 22:19.08

And if you're great on this show, that's that's all it takes.

22:19.08 – 22:19.66

Sky's the limit for you.

22:19.70 – 22:23.62

Rocketship. Yeah. You can't get to the Senate or the White House, but it's a lot of other

22:23.62 – 22:24.50

cool places you can get to.

22:24.50 – 22:27.66

The like the show, like the show.

22:28.00 – 22:31.50

Yeah, I don't know. You know, look, Texas, Texas has been like Lucy with the football.

22:31.74 – 22:33.20

I know. But you know what?

22:34.18 – 22:35.12

So it's this America.

22:35.42 – 22:37.82

This is it's the year and it's and this is America.

22:37.98 – 22:39.22

And it's a new day. It's a new mate.

22:39.42 – 22:41.12

And I look at Beto couldn't do it.

22:41.20 – 22:42.10

We're better walk.

22:42.24 – 22:44.04

Colin can run. Then do you have some insight?

22:44.24 – 22:45.68

Yeah. Yes.

22:45.74 – 22:47.08

So I don't know if it's insight.

22:47.50 – 22:53.42

I think Colin Allred is basically a perfect candidate for Texas, is a black, moderate

22:53.42 – 22:57.44

football player. He has he's a great demeanor.

22:57.90 – 23:01.40

He is he is someone who reaches out to people across the ideological spectrum.

23:01.92 – 23:05.64

He can sort of alive some of the typical caricatures of Democrats.

23:06.46 – 23:08.28

Is it a very hard race in Texas generally?

23:08.44 – 23:10.28

Yes. Is it even harder in a presidential year with Donald Trump?

23:10.36 – 23:11.14

The ballot? Absolutely.

23:11.94 – 23:13.16

Is there does he have a shot?

23:13.56 – 23:14.86

Sure. It's a long shot, but he's a shot.

23:14.88 – 23:20.46

But there's also real value in supporting and funding his candidacy because we need the

23:20.46 – 23:22.48

map is shifting in ways that are not great for Democrats.

23:22.48 – 23:25.86

Texas is something we need to get into our column before long.

23:25.92 – 23:30.06

And every time we run a competitive, well-funded, well-organized race, we get ourselves a

23:30.06 – 23:32.46

little bit closer to Charlie actually kicking that football.

23:33.46 – 23:37.18

And so I think it I think people if people have money and they're looking for Senate

23:37.18 – 23:40.38

candidate support, you may it is not the race will likely deliver us the Senate.

23:40.54 – 23:44.54

But in the long building, long term, sustainable, progressive power, investing in

23:44.54 – 23:45.60

Colorado, it's probably a good idea.

23:46.34 – 23:51.88

Hey, who better to kick that football than a 6'1", 237 pound outside linebacker who ran

23:51.88 – 23:53.68

a 4'7", 5'40".

23:53.68 – 23:54.46

Wow. Yeah.

23:55.04 – 23:55.94

And played a Baylor.

23:56.06 – 23:57.30

Do you have his combine stats in front of you?

23:57.44 – 23:58.60

I just I googled it.

23:59.32 – 24:02.34

I did. He has it saved on his on his desktop.

24:03.44 – 24:04.74

I have him tattooed on my internet.

24:04.92 – 24:07.66

All right. Another state that's been shifting to Democrats, Arizona.

24:08.30 – 24:10.04

Kyrsten Sinema is out.

24:10.52 – 24:12.14

Don't let the door hit you where the good Lord split you.

24:15.34 – 24:16.46

I make dad jokes.

24:16.64 – 24:18.92

People think that's not a dad joke.

24:19.00 – 24:20.40

That's just a great old saying.

24:20.66 – 24:21.48

That is a dad joke.

24:21.48 – 24:24.28

That is a dad joke. So she's out.

24:24.40 – 24:25.60

She hadn't been raising a lot of money.

24:25.68 – 24:27.18

So people kind of suspected she was out.

24:27.40 – 24:28.66

Seems like she's retiring for good.

24:28.74 – 24:31.82

Doesn't quite seem like she's ready to jump on the no labels ticket.

24:32.14 – 24:32.80

I haven't heard that.

24:32.94 – 24:34.48

She'll spend more time with her hedge fund, I think.

24:34.58 – 24:35.98

Yeah, I think she's going to go do her marathons.

24:36.16 – 24:36.78

She likes her marathons.

24:36.88 – 24:38.34

Yeah. Learn more about wine.

24:38.78 – 24:39.46

Learn more about wine.

24:39.78 – 24:46.04

So last two head to head polls in Arizona have Gallego up seven and ten on Kerry

24:46.04 – 24:49.54

Lake. Only two polls, you know, not super high quality polls, but not bad.

24:49.78 – 24:50.74

Not bad. What do you guys think?

24:51.18 – 24:52.92

He's another really good candidate, I think.

24:53.04 – 24:54.14

I mean, he's a former Marine.

24:54.28 – 24:55.68

He talks like a normal human being.

24:55.88 – 24:56.86

He's super thoughtful.

24:57.02 – 24:59.36

He can connect with like your average voter.

24:59.60 – 25:00.60

He's a combat veteran.

25:00.80 – 25:04.14

I mean, I think the fact this is now a one on one race is really important.

25:04.24 – 25:09.78

I think what he needs is money because because Kyrsten Sinema has been kind of

25:09.78 – 25:14.70

like parked in this will she won't she region, the DSCC and all the other party

25:14.70 – 25:16.92

organizations haven't been able to go all in on Arizona.

25:17.08 – 25:20.28

So they've been having to cobble together their own grassroots donor base.

25:20.28 – 25:23.90

So they're a little behind just on raising, but at least they they have this

25:23.90 – 25:25.22

fundraising base of their own.

25:25.34 – 25:27.56

And now they need the DSCC to come in and help them out.

25:27.88 – 25:33.60

Yeah. I mean, look, Arizona has you know, this is a closely divided state, but it's

25:33.60 – 25:35.66

also a state that has rejected these fucking kooks.

25:35.92 – 25:39.18

And Kerry Lake, if they ran a she's the queen of the kooks, she's the queen of the

25:39.18 – 25:43.10

kooks. And if they had run a more normal old school type of Republican who didn't

25:43.10 – 25:48.32

believe in the election lie and wasn't just, you know, harassing Ruben Gallego at

25:48.32 – 25:53.12

the airport, maybe they'd have maybe this would be maybe they'd have a better shot.

25:53.54 – 25:57.68

Yeah. And much like Trump, she was telling McCain voters to fuck off.

25:58.42 – 26:03.50

So I bet I suspect you'll see Gallego try to reach out to a lot of those moderate

26:03.50 – 26:07.10

and independent voters who, like, make up a big portion of the electorate in

26:07.10 – 26:12.38

Arizona. I noticed that he's he's you could you could sort of tell that he's been

26:12.38 – 26:15.20

moderating a little bit over in the in the last several months.

26:15.20 – 26:21.54

But look, replacing Sinema with Gallego and keeping the Senate means that we would

26:21.54 – 26:26.60

have the votes to get rid of the filibuster, at least for reinstating Roe v.

26:26.76 – 26:29.00

Wade and passing the Voting Rights Act.

26:29.22 – 26:31.52

It is huge if we hold the house in the presidency, too.

26:31.76 – 26:35.68

But like we've we talk a lot about all the bad things that we can prevent from

26:35.68 – 26:39.44

happening if if Joe Biden wins again and Donald Trump doesn't.

26:39.60 – 26:42.52

But this is a good thing, a really good thing.
