[00:16.42 - 00:24.00]

It's January 2002, just days before the Gaskins episode of No Going Back is due to air on Channel 4.

[00:24.94 - 00:50.40]

. Inside the production company's London office, researcher James is sitting at his desk, still reeling from everything that's happened over the past year. Phil's death has been tough on everyone, but the episode is finally finished, and James feels a wave of relief. Until one of the receptionists waves him over to take a phone call. She covers the mouthpiece with her hand and whispers, It's for you.

[00:51.26 - 00:52.72]

It's Phil Gaskin.

2
Speaker 2
[00:53.50 - 00:56.22]

There's pure cold-blooded terror running through me.

1
Speaker 1
[00:56.22 - 01:08.16]

She must have misheard. Surely, James swallows and reaches a now sweaty handout to take the phone. Hello, he says. James. here.

[01:09.16 - 01:12.54]

Hi, comes the response. This is Phil Gaskin.

2
Speaker 2
[01:13.76 - 01:23.20]

The whole world dropped, because I may well have been at the centre of an absolutely catastrophic cock-up, because this guy shouldn't exist.

1
Speaker 1
[01:24.28 - 01:33.60]

James's mind is racing. He listens, as the man on the phone tells him, quite calmly, that he is the real Phil Gaskin.

2
Speaker 2
[01:34.30 - 01:49.74]

I'm a researcher, I'm quite a junior person, who may well have just accidentally caused a proper nuclear red-button incident. There can't be another Philip Gaskin. That guy's dead. He's in a tomb. I know he's in a tomb.

1
Speaker 1
[01:50.52 - 02:00.82]

James starts to panic. If this guy on the phone is telling the truth, and he's the real Phil Gaskin, then who the hell have they spent a year filming with?

[02:13.00 - 02:19.68]

From Wondery, I'm Alice Levine, host of British Scandal, and this is the Price of Paradise.

[02:21.80 - 02:32.76]

Day after night, so paradise. Snow upside down, nowhere to hide. Just no one can see through the light.

Since Jane and Maria left home to follow their dreams, Jane, her dream island, and Maria, her dream job, their lives have changed beyond recognition. Both of their partners, who they loved dearly, have died, and the island paradise that connects them is now at the heart of a bitter feud. What started as a local land dispute has descended into a deadly battle, and the man who sold the pearl keys is about to step into the spotlight.

[03:17.64 - 03:52.48]

Peter Sokos is sitting under strip lights in the offices of La Prensa, one of Nicaragua's largest national newspapers. Ever since Frank Garcia was murdered, people have been pointing the finger at him. As the man behind tropicalislands.com, he was the one who sold the pearl keys to foreign buyers, including Jane and Phil. Then the local lawyer, Maria Acosta, got involved, and her husband was murdered. Since then, Maria's been claiming publicly that Sokos hired the hitman.

[03:53.18 - 04:19.70]

So today he's here to be interviewed, to set the record straight, once and for all. His lawyer and fixer, Peter Martinez, is by his side, because this is definitely a situation that needs fixing. A journalist strides towards them, offering each of the Peters a brief handshake, before asking if they're ready to begin. Sokos flashes a smile. Of course.

[04:20.64 - 04:51.08]

As he chats to the journalist, Sokos sets out his case. He wants it noted that he currently has nothing to do with the pearl keys, because they've all been sold, legally, to foreign investors. He's deeply concerned about the accusations linking him to Frank Garcia's murder, he says. He has nothing to gain from Garcia's death, and everything to lose. But, perhaps, other people might benefit from Frank's death.

[04:51.50 - 05:21.34]

Perhaps by using it to further their own cause. When it comes to the islands, all, Maria and those other NGOs want to do is destroy tourism and scare away foreign investment. Sokos looks the reporter in the eyes and leans in. Things have become even more serious. He's had death threats over email from a group of environmental activists with links to Maria's organisation, he says.

[05:21.94 - 05:34.82]

The journalist scribbles down the details. It's a great story. And a few days later, on the 13th of April 2002, the headline reads, Sokos fears for his life.

[05:37.68 - 05:57.36]

Sokos has given his side of the story to the press. Now it's time to give his statement to the judge. And he doesn't hold back. Inside the district courthouse, Sokos outlines his testimony carefully and shows the judge the death threats he's been emailed. It's all very concerning.

[05:58.16 - 06:19.94]

He concludes by suggesting that the judge should start looking into a new suspect. And hours later, Judge Cambroniero does exactly that, announcing that new evidence has emerged. His investigation will now focus on a different suspect for the murder of Frank Garcia. And that person is Maria Acosta.

[06:23.78 - 06:46.36]

If I was writing this as fiction, I'd say, no way, we've lost the reader. They'll never believe this. But this actually happened. Maria is accused of her own husband's murder. In his office in downtown Bluefields, lawyer Peter Martinez backs up the theory to a visiting film crew interviewing him for a documentary they're making about the Pearl Keys.

[06:46.92 - 06:56.46]

First person that should have been investigated is Frank Garcia's wife. When her husband was killed. coincidentally, at that moment, she wasn't at home. She reached one, two hours after.

3
Speaker 3
[06:56.72 - 06:57.54]

Think about that.

1
Speaker 1
[06:58.10 - 07:08.60]

Why wasn't Maria in the house at the time of the murder? He asks. And what's more, when it comes to Frank's killers, one of them feels suspiciously close to home.

3
Speaker 3
[07:09.18 - 07:13.44]

The people who killed her husband came from precisely the same municipality where she lives.

1
Speaker 1
[07:14.26 - 07:15.22]

Think about that.

[07:17.26 - 07:37.36]

OK, let's do it. Let's think about that for a second. While it's technically true, one of the hitmen who worked with Rivera is from Chinandega, Maria's hometown. It's important to note this isn't some hamlet where everyone says hi to each other every morning. It's Nicaragua's sixth largest city with over 100,000 residents.

[07:38.28 - 07:48.72]

But Martinez is just asking the questions. Did Maria know him? Did she hire him? Did she mastermind the whole murder plot? Martinez obviously couldn't say.

[07:48.72 - 08:03.04]

He just wants you to think about it. As you can imagine, Maria is flawed. Frank's murder is in the papers every day. And now she's the headline suspect. Under attack from Socos and Martinez.

3
Speaker 3
[08:03.58 - 08:13.76]

They had no boundaries, you know. They could do anything. They didn't care. And then I realised that they had no limits and they wanted to destroy me.

1
Speaker 1
[08:14.52 - 08:26.16]

Maria doesn't know where to turn. Until finally, she finds an enthusiastic lawyer from the public ministry named Cesar. He offers to listen to her case.

3
Speaker 3
[08:26.64 - 08:31.26]

And I call him, and I talk to him and I explain everything.

1
Speaker 1
[08:32.02 - 08:49.86]

Cesar works inside local government, so she's hoping he can make a difference. She pours her heart out, telling him all about the false allegations that have been made against her. He says he'll help document the evidence and support her appeal. She finally feels like someone is in her corner.

[08:52.46 - 08:59.30]

Meanwhile, back home, Maria's family is shaken. Including her son, Alvaro.

4
Speaker 4
[08:59.76 - 09:07.48]

It seemed ludicrous to me. Unimaginable. We were in suspense, thinking that my mother might be arrested for killing Frank.

1
Speaker 1
[09:08.32 - 09:29.98]

But it's not only a jail sentence that's hanging over them. The whole family is living in fear for their lives. The hitman, Rivera, is still a fugitive. And they're all on edge, thinking any of them might be next. Maria has been getting more calls from her anonymous informer, the man whose friend was killed by Rivera.

[09:30.70 - 09:44.00]

He tells her that Ivan's been spotted, living by the beach. But when the police appear, Rivera outruns them. And while he's still at large, the situation feels more dangerous than ever.

4
Speaker 4
[09:44.72 - 09:52.40]

During that time, the police wanted to give us bodyguards. And my mom, she didn't trust the police. So my uncle did that privately.

1
Speaker 1
[09:53.70 - 10:08.36]

Maria's family are terrified. And that fear is contagious. Now, even some of Maria's friends and acquaintances are starting to keep their distance. Just being seen with her feels like it puts them in jeopardy.

4
Speaker 4
[10:08.68 - 10:27.38]

People shut the door on us. My mom had a friend who was married to an ambassador. And he told his wife to avoid my mother. My mother, she cried when she told me about that, because she was being treated like a disreputable person. And that had never happened to her in her life.

1
Speaker 1
[10:28.82 - 10:42.90]

Not only has Maria lost Frank, but she's now watching her circle get smaller and smaller. People are frightened to be seen with her. Frightened about what might happen next.

[11:03.60 - 11:19.32]

Back on Janik, the children are enjoying a barbecue. Snakeman Steve has been taking them out on his panga every morning, teaching them how to fish. Then it's back to the beach to build a fire and grill their hard-won catches.

[11:21.90 - 11:52.22]

But this afternoon is a little different, because they've had a surprise visitor. The real Phil Gaskins. As her ex-husband steps onto the beach, Jane thinks this isn't quite how she wanted the day to pan out. This is the same Phil that had called Researcher James in the TV production office, but not the Phil they'd filmed on Janik. The two Phils may have shared the same name, but that was where the similarities ended.

2
Speaker 2
[11:53.10 - 11:58.10]

He seems quite straight, typical English home counties. He's a kind of ordinary geezer.

1
Speaker 1
[11:58.66 - 12:13.00]

As ordinary geezer, Phil Gaskin walks down the beach, he's followed by a reporter from the Mail on Sunday, a cameraman and a police officer who's been sent by the paper for protection.

2
Speaker 2
[12:13.52 - 12:29.78]

I was absolutely astounded that this guy had called me up. He was very kind of up in arms about it all, really, that his ex-wife and kids were in Nicaragua and he had no idea. And then, weeks later, he sold his story to the tabloids.

1
Speaker 1
[12:29.96 - 12:51.34]

And now they've paid for him to come to Janik. As Phil approaches, he strides right past Jane and heads straight towards the children. The photographer hurries behind to try and capture the perfect shots. The ones they're planning to caption, reunited. Phil with his children and moment of joy.

[12:52.04 - 13:11.54]

Phil cuddles his daughter. Jane watches anger brewing inside her. The British press has followed her all the way to her private island. And now even her ex-husband has too. She told TV producer Billy that their marriage had not been a happy one.

2
Speaker 2
[13:12.24 - 13:22.86]

They'd been estranged for a while. They hadn't had a good relationship. from what Jane told me. Jane felt that him turning up was the wrong thing to do. She sort of said that's typical of him.

1
Speaker 1
[13:23.48 - 13:55.48]

So, just in case you're as confused as poor James, the researcher was that day in the office when the phone rang, here's the science bit. Jane didn't just have a very specific type and exclusively date Phil Gaskins. One Phil, this Phil Gaskin, Jane met 15 years earlier and they were married within a year. Three children followed, but it was a turbulent relationship and they separated bitterly after their last child was born. Later that same year, Jane started living with another Phil.

[13:55.94 - 14:10.72]

New Phil, let's call him. The one we know, who was actually called Phil Broadhead when they first met. New Phil was a different kind of man entirely. More of an adventurous spirit. A man who would do anything to make Jane happy.

[14:11.40 - 14:33.46]

Even walk away from everything they'd built in Britain. Their home and friends and family. And start a new life together in Nicaragua. That's why she fell in love with him. After taking the phone call from the real Phil, researcher, James discovered how real Phil and new Phil both came to share the same surname.

2
Speaker 2
[14:34.36 - 14:41.52]

On Jane's divorce papers, it said that she could only take the kids out of the country with Philip Gaskin.

1
Speaker 1
[14:42.00 - 14:49.80]

So, as Jane prepared for their move, they'd hit a big problem. But there was only one solution for her new Phil.

2
Speaker 2
[14:50.52 - 14:58.36]

He had changed his name by depol to Philip Gaskin, and so they'd done this deliberately to take the kids out of the country.

1
Speaker 1
[14:59.36 - 15:06.84]

Once their passport issues had been sorted, the Gaskins were free to move to the Pearl Keys. And no one would be any the wiser.

2
Speaker 2
[15:07.46 - 15:13.88]

But she hadn't told her ex-husband, the real. Philip Gaskin. Had no idea they were in Nicaragua.

1
Speaker 1
[15:14.20 - 15:26.46]

Now, after press coverage around the TV show, everyone knows exactly where Jane is. Including the real Phil Gaskin. And now he's here, on her island.

2
Speaker 2
[15:27.20 - 15:35.04]

He just got flown over there, turned up with these kind of comically inept presents for them that he'd grabbed at the airport.

1
Speaker 1
[15:35.52 - 15:52.18]

A packet of jelly beans, baseball caps for the boys and a blue handbag for his daughter. The children accept their gifts with grace and ask their dad if he wants to sleep over. It's just not the right time, he replies apologetically.

2
Speaker 2
[15:52.58 - 15:55.88]

It really was a one-day visit. He didn't stay overnight.

1
Speaker 1
[15:56.64 - 16:16.50]

Although, to be fair, that would have been one very awkward sleepover. Real Phil and the kids smile for the photo shoot. Ready for Sunday's double-page spread. Headlined, How can I abandon my children in this hellhole with my mad ex-wife and her snake man? To be honest, I would click on it.

[16:16.50 - 16:53.48]

Give that journalist a Pulitzer. The article that follows is just a classic tabloid reunion story of an estranged father travelling to a tropical island to visit his kids, who've been living there with a man who has adopted his identity so they can live off the coast of Nicaragua. I mean, we've heard it a thousand times before. The feature describes the children's father as a doting dad and an extraordinarily gentle man who cries during the emotional reunion with his missing children. The kids do look healthy, the reporter begrudgingly concedes, with their glowing skin and hair.

[16:54.02 - 17:16.12]

And they say they love living on the island. But she has concerns. Firstly, there are dangerous pursuits they take part in, like deep-sea fishing. Then there's the giant anaconda that Steve keeps in their cabin. She writes, Astonishingly, Jane wants the children to work with these potentially lethal creatures.

[17:17.22 - 17:45.66]

And lastly, there's the strange foreign food they've been subjected to, like whelk stew. It's certainly a far cry from their nice, normal life in Hampshire. The paper goes on to label Jane as vain and selfish, claiming she abducted the children without real Phil's knowledge. But Jane is steadfast. The British papers can print whatever they want.

[17:45.66 - 18:12.40]

She's used to it. The tabloids will soon find another woman to target. Her thoughts are on the future. With plans for the island dive resort permanently shelved, Jane has plunged more of her dwindling savings into Steve's business, breeding snakes, frogs and turtles for the overseas pet market. But James isn't convinced it's going to be the big payday she hopes.

2
Speaker 2
[18:12.40 - 18:21.60]

Snakeman. Steve is probably not the most stable of guys to chuck money at. It seemed like another kind of slightly foolhardy move on Jane's behalf.

1
Speaker 1
[18:22.50 - 18:53.74]

Jane is praying she's made the right decision because funds are running low. Using the last of her savings, she takes the children to the mainland, where they rent a four-bedroom house on the outskirts of Bluefields. The Gaskins share their new residence with Snakeman, Steve's adult daughter and a sturdy American bulldog called the Colonel. It's next door to the disused chicken ranch where Steve breeds his reptiles. The kids love playing with the baby snakes, who hardly ever bite, they say.

[18:54.62 - 19:02.80]

And it's not just anacondas that are on hand to play with. It's other children too. All three of them quickly make friends in the neighbourhood.

2
Speaker 2
[19:03.78 - 19:22.50]

In all the footage of them in that period, it seemed actually that the kids were really happy getting all of those things that they'd been desperately craving on the island. They are riding bikes, kicking balls around, as opposed to being stuck on an island 90 minutes offshore, and there was nothing to do.

1
Speaker 1
[19:23.48 - 19:54.80]

Finally, the kids have got the social life they've been missing. The plan now is to split their time between Bluefields, with its friends, school and welcome internet connection, and Janique. But now every time they go back to the island, the children want to come back to the mainland. Jane can tell that for the kids, their island isolation is really starting to hit home. Over in Chinandega, isolation is proving overwhelming for Maria too.

[19:55.34 - 20:08.92]

As friends and colleagues drift away, Maria's resolve to carry on is constantly tested. But soon, a mystery phone call will be the injection of hope she needs.

[20:22.84 - 20:57.50]

Back at the district courthouse in Bluefields, after investigating Frank's murder for just five weeks, Judge Cambronero takes a decision that shocks everyone. He announces that there's not enough evidence to look at Socos, Martinez or even Maria as suspects. And the judge decides that the only people worth pursuing are Frank's hitmen, the lodgers who came to stay at Maria's house before the murder. So he issues an order for police to arrest Ivan Rivera. Maria is furious.

[20:58.16 - 21:23.78]

She can't believe the judge is dismissing Socos and Martinez so quickly. But there isn't even time for Maria to breathe a sigh of relief that her name is out of the frame. Because not long after the judge's announcement, Socos and Martinez decide to sue Maria for defamation. They want $100,000 in compensation. And if she can't pay, they'll seize her house.

[21:26.04 - 21:30.38]

Maria's starting to feel like these two men will do anything to defeat her.

3
Speaker 3
[21:30.84 - 21:39.10]

Whatever they were defending, it has much worth. And I was like impeding them from reaching it.

1
Speaker 1
[21:39.42 - 21:56.58]

She's already lost Frank. Now she's worried she could lose everything else. Her home, her reputation, her job. Maria's desperate to bring Socos and Martinez to justice. So she's been calling Cesar, the lawyer at the ministry, to see if he can help.

[21:57.26 - 22:18.94]

He's been detailing everything that's gone wrong with the investigation to include in a memorandum. It's exactly what Maria needs to launch her appeal. But she knows it's not going to be enough on its own. Now she needs some solid evidence that proves who was behind Frank's murder. And before too long, that evidence finds her.

[22:20.22 - 22:26.92]

Early. one evening in July, Maria is at her family home in Chinandega when the phone rings.

[22:29.36 - 22:40.44]

Hello, Maria Acosta? It's not her anonymous caller. It's definitely a voice she's heard before, but she can't quite place it until he says.

3
Speaker 3
[22:40.86 - 22:53.40]

I am the man who was in your house the day of the assassination. And I said, Rivera? And he said, yes. And he began to talk.

1
Speaker 1
[22:53.98 - 23:07.54]

It takes everything for Maria to keep her voice slow and steady. She wants to scream, but she'll do anything to get justice for Frank. So she keeps his murderer talking.

3
Speaker 3
[23:08.30 - 23:17.50]

I was afraid. I was surprised. It was violent for me to listen to him. But I had to do it. And I had to be patient.

[23:18.12 - 23:20.80]

There was hope that I could get to the truth.

1
Speaker 1
[23:21.50 - 23:30.00]

What do you want? She says. There's a pause on the other end of the line. Rivera's desperate. He's wanted for murder.

[23:30.44 - 23:38.58]

His face is all over the papers. He says he has information that will help, Maria. But he wants something too.

3
Speaker 3
[23:39.04 - 23:47.36]

I was like, I will never help you. But I couldn't say that. I had to give him some sort of confidence for him to talk.

1
Speaker 1
[23:48.14 - 24:12.92]

So Maria enters into negotiations with the person she's sure killed her husband. And over the next few calls, Rivera talks. But when her son Alvaro hears what's been happening, he's worried. The family all think that Maria was the real target on the night of Frank's murder. So talking to his hitman feels like playing with fire.

4
Speaker 4
[24:13.56 - 24:28.10]

He's a murderer, you know. It made me feel uncomfortable that he's talking to her. But I knew that she wanted to catch him. You know, there's a lot of criminal underworld in law. And being able to deal with that, I respected her for that.

1
Speaker 1
[24:28.44 - 24:51.74]

Rivera starts calling Maria regularly. He wants Maria to help him get the murder charge against him dropped. Over the next few calls, he begins to reveal some details. But it's hard to get a straight answer from him, because he's worried for his life too. The more he tells her, the more Maria's beginning to suspect that Rivera's been set up by the men who hired him.

3
Speaker 3
[24:52.02 - 24:59.86]

He gave me the impression that these people had promised him so many things and he had abandoned him.

1
Speaker 1
[25:00.24 - 25:09.08]

But who are these people? Was Peter Sokos involved? She asks. Rivera won't give a straight answer. But he doesn't deny it.

[25:09.60 - 25:23.40]

He says he'll put it all on a cassette tape and send it to her. But then he lets something slip. The name of the company he used to work for. Master Security. Maria scribbles it down on her notepad.

[25:23.78 - 25:45.60]

She doesn't even know if it's significant. But it's the only lead she's got. As soon as she gets the chance, Maria drives three hours to the Master Security offices in Managua. to doorstep the manager. He confirms that Ivan Rivera used to work for them as a security guard, stationed at the house of one of their clients.

[25:46.70 - 25:54.58]

What was their name? Maria, asks. The manager pauses, then responds. Mr. Peter Sokos.

[25:55.32 - 25:56.08]

Bingo.

3
Speaker 3
[25:56.94 - 26:02.26]

I asked him, would you put that in writing for me? And they wrote a letter.

1
Speaker 1
[26:03.60 - 26:19.38]

Maria is elated. Surely this is enough to launch an appeal. Maria updates the police. And soon they tell her that they've got a new piece of evidence too. The ballistics report has come back on the bullet removed from Frank's chest.

[26:19.94 - 26:36.24]

The police have matched it to a gun and they show her the results. The bullet which was extracted from the victim, Francisco Jose Garcia Valle, was shot with the Lawson .25 caliber gun, taken from citizen Peter Martinez.

[26:38.02 - 27:01.04]

Finally, Maria can launch an appeal. And for the next few months, she details all the evidence and submits it to the court, along with the memorandum compiled by Cesar, the government lawyer. After what feels like an eternity, she hears back from the judge. He refuses to reopen the case. It's infuriating.

[27:02.00 - 27:23.64]

Maria knows her last hope now is to track down the only man who can provide the answers she needs. The man who killed her husband, Ivan Rivera. But now, two years later, he's stopped calling. And that promised cassette tape containing all his evidence? Well, it never arrived.

[27:24.44 - 27:26.32]

All hope feels lost.

I was upset. I was disappointed. I was frustrated.

Finally, one morning in July 2004,, there's a breakthrough.

[27:40.38 - 27:41.48]

Hello, Maria.

[27:42.96 - 28:00.56]

But it's not Rivera calling this time. It's the familiar voice of her anonymous informer. The one who told her that Rivera killed his friend. The one who promised to help Maria find him. Over the two years they've been speaking, there have been so many sightings.

[28:01.24 - 28:18.26]

Let's just say that Rivera is a guy who stands out. He's got thick, dark eyebrows and a manicured mustache. And here's the giveaway, a cobra tattooed on his arm. But this time, the caller knows exactly where he's hiding.

[28:19.80 - 28:41.06]

Ivan Rivera is living under a fake name in a San Jose neighborhood in Costa Rica called La Carpio. Maria knows it well. It's a run-down part of the capital with a large Nicaraguan population. She knows it because Frank's cousin lives nearby. She calls him straight away.

[28:41.86 - 28:58.10]

He said, Maria Luisa, there are half a million Nicaraguans in La Carpio. And I said, but not all of them have a tattoo of a cobra. And he said, wait, wait, I'll make some calls. I'll get back to you.

Maria waits by the phone.

3
Speaker 3
[29:00.58 - 29:05.58]

And five minutes later, he called me. There he is, Maria.

Speaker 1
[29:06.44 - 29:14.56]

Maria can barely breathe. She feels somewhere deep inside that, this time Rivera's finally in her sights.

[29:17.10 - 29:43.92]

August 31st, 2004,, San Jose, Costa Rica. It's almost dark and Costa Rican police are gathering quietly outside a small office building in an industrial area not far from La Carpio. They're still whispering instructions. when... Out steps a man in his early thirties, thick, dark eyebrows, a neat moustache.

[29:44.54 - 29:54.08]

The cops look at each other. This must be him. They train their guns towards him, then shout. Hands up. The man freezes.

[29:54.64 - 30:11.02]

The police keep their guns on him. And slowly he lifts up his arms. That's when they spot it, a large tattoo of a snake curling around his left arm. It's him. They handcuff Rivera and throw him into a police van before speeding through town.

[30:12.24 - 30:34.00]

Journalists have been tipped off and camera crews are waiting at the local detention centre ready to get the story. Rivera keeps his eyes cast towards the floor as he climbs out of the van. And a reporter snaps a photo for tomorrow's paper. But when a Channel 11 TV reporter starts to fire questions at him, he lifts his head and replies.

[30:35.72 - 30:39.96]

The gringo told me to rent that apartment and take the boys there.

[30:42.00 - 30:46.94]

Maria is under no illusions about exactly which foreigner he means.

3
Speaker 3
[30:47.50 - 30:54.12]

The people call him like a nickname, you know, the gringo. He was the only gringo involved in this situation.

1
Speaker 1
[30:54.68 - 31:04.72]

The newspapers are happy to connect the dots. Assassin mentions suck us. Shouts, one, alongside a photo of Rivera handcuffed to a police officer.

[31:06.26 - 31:07.86]

Maria is delighted.

3
Speaker 3
[31:08.30 - 31:22.42]

I felt like the sky had opened. It was what I had been wanting to happen for years. I was excited. And what I wanted from all this is for him to tell the truth.

1
Speaker 1
[31:23.16 - 31:48.16]

She can't wait for Rivera to be deported back to Nicaragua so he can finally testify that the gringo who hired him was Peter Sokos, the man who sold the island to Jane and Phil. He can state on record that it was Sokos who ordered Maria's execution and Frank was the accidental victim. Could this finally be the end?

[31:54.76 - 32:01.78]

Next time, on The Price of Paradise, Jane's island dream comes crashing down.

2
Speaker 2
[32:02.36 - 32:07.16]

She felt constantly under threat. You know, the money was running out. I think she had to admit defeat.

1
Speaker 1
[32:07.64 - 32:10.36]

And Maria begins to turn the tide.

3
Speaker 3
[32:11.48 - 32:17.16]

And then I had to give my testimony and it was horrible.
