2Speaker 2
00:00:29.24 – 00:00:33.84

Live from the headquarters of Ramsey Solutions, it's the Ramsey Show!

00:00:33.84 – 00:00:42.34

Where we help people build wealth, do work that they love, and create actual amazing relationships.

00:00:42.74 – 00:00:49.32

I am your host, Jade Warshaw. Your other host for the day is Dr. John Deloney to my right.

00:00:49.54 – 00:00:54.84

Give us a call. The number is 888-825-5225. We will talk about the things that are concerning

00:00:54.84 – 00:01:01.22

to you about your life and your money. I'm here as kind of the money expert and my guide John is

00:01:01.22 – 00:01:06.46

here as your mental health and wellness. I still don't know why I'm here. We're thinking about it.

00:01:06.52 – 00:01:11.72

We're figuring it out as we go, but give us a call. Like I said, the number is 888-825-5225.

00:01:11.80 – 00:01:17.74

We'll chop it up with you. Let's go directly to the phone lines. We got Laura in Phoenix, Arizona.

00:01:18.02 – 00:01:28.62

What's going on, Laura? Laura, are you there? Did I get her? Are you there? Okay, it was my nails.

00:01:29.26 – 00:01:36.02

I blame my nails. Are you there? Hello. Okay, what's going on, Laura? Jade's nails got in the way again.

3Speaker 3
00:01:37.40 – 00:01:47.26

What's up, Laura? Yeah, so I need help. Currently, we're on $30,000 in debt, so we always sit down

00:01:47.26 – 00:01:55.94

and talk about our debts. Say, we sit down on the Monday, everything goes good, and then the

00:01:55.94 – 00:02:06.88

weekend starts. We have an issue where my husband likes to drink like Friday, sometimes Friday to

00:02:06.88 – 00:02:15.04

Sunday, and then during that time, he forgets about our budget. Well, I would think so.

00:02:16.50 – 00:02:20.82

Yeah, so then that goes out the window, and then Monday comes, and it's like...

00:02:21.87 – 00:02:30.05

He's ready to start again. Yeah, and he's like, what happened? I thought we had sat down and

00:02:30.05 – 00:02:38.49

talked about our budget. How long has that been going on? I would say like six months. We've

00:02:38.49 – 00:02:46.33

tried to get together and try to pay off our debt, but it's just not working. Yeah, you're

1Speaker 1
00:02:46.33 – 00:02:52.57

married to somebody who's really struggling with alcohol. Yeah. This is not a budgeting issue at

00:02:52.57 – 00:03:02.13

all. Yeah. This is that you love someone who's an alcoholic. Yeah, and it sucks because he doesn't

3Speaker 3
00:03:02.13 – 00:03:09.57

see it that way, so it seems like I'm the nagging wife. Right, and here's what you've got to do.

1Speaker 1
00:03:11.73 – 00:03:16.29

Unfortunately, there is no healing in your marriage. There's no healing in your financial

00:03:16.29 – 00:03:19.79

life. There's no healing in underneath your marriage and underneath your financial...

00:03:19.79 – 00:03:24.31

All that leads to this moment where you don't feel safe in your own house, do you?

00:03:26.31 – 00:03:30.75

No. No. None of that changes until he chooses to get clean,

00:03:32.87 – 00:03:36.23

and so no matter what the issue is, when somebody comes in and says, hey,

00:03:36.23 – 00:03:43.05

I'm struggling with X and Y and Z, and I'm drinking, and I can't quit doing X, Y substance,

00:03:44.53 – 00:03:48.23

nothing happens on the mental health side, the marriage side, the emotional, until somebody

00:03:48.23 – 00:03:54.61

says, I'm willing to go get clean, and what that means is you have to take care of you

00:03:55.77 – 00:04:00.47

because you're not safe, and I don't even doubt that this guy loves you, but this guy's got some

00:04:00.47 – 00:04:03.97

significant struggles that he at this time is unwilling to deal with,

00:04:04.59 – 00:04:08.43

and so you have to make your safety priority number one.

00:04:10.43 – 00:04:15.61

What does that mean? It probably means you need to find somewhere for him or for you to go for

00:04:15.61 – 00:04:20.19

30 days and say, hey, I'm not going to live with somebody who's unsafe anymore. I'm tired of being

00:04:20.19 – 00:04:23.63

on eggshells in my own house. I'm tired of not knowing where all our money goes. I'm tired of

00:04:23.63 – 00:04:27.01

not knowing where you go, and then you come home on Monday and kind of make it my fault, and I go,

00:04:27.01 – 00:04:31.77

I thought we had all this. He's got to decide to do something different, and that means going

00:04:31.77 – 00:04:36.09

to a meeting starting tomorrow morning, even though tomorrow's Thanksgiving. See what I'm

00:04:36.09 – 00:04:43.39

saying? This is a way bigger deal than budgets. Yeah. And can I just be honest with you?

00:04:44.75 – 00:04:46.31

Yeah. You know this, right?

3Speaker 3
00:04:49.23 – 00:04:53.69

Yeah. I mean, he doesn't get upset about it, and he just says, like,

00:04:54.67 – 00:04:59.63

what's going on? Like, we sit down, and then I'm like, well, this is what happens, and then he's

00:04:59.63 – 00:05:05.27

like, oh, you know what? Yeah, you're right. I'm going to work on it. So listen, behavior is a

1Speaker 1
00:05:05.27 – 00:05:11.55

language, and what he's telling you is, I don't care what you and I agreed on. I don't care what

00:05:11.55 – 00:05:18.03

you and I, I don't care about our marriage fidelity. I don't care about our agreements.

00:05:18.23 – 00:05:22.87

I don't care about our financial health. I care about going on Friday and Saturday nights and

00:05:22.87 – 00:05:29.57

doing whatever the crap I want to do, period. I don't care how you feel in my own house. I don't

00:05:29.57 – 00:05:34.93

care if you feel like I'm a liar. I don't care if you can't trust me. I get to go party on Friday,

3Speaker 3
00:05:35.05 – 00:05:39.81

Saturday, and Sunday. Yeah. Well, he doesn't go party, but he drinks at home, but...

1Speaker 1
00:05:39.81 – 00:05:44.63

Okay. Well, he's going to disappear on his own house on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Yeah.

00:05:45.77 – 00:05:49.03

Yeah. Behavior is a language, and he's talking to you loud and clear.

00:05:50.61 – 00:05:54.61

Yeah. So this is the point when you go get a friend, you go get a pastor, you go get a therapist,

00:05:54.75 – 00:05:58.37

and you sit down and come up with some really ironclad boundaries that are going to be

00:05:58.37 – 00:06:06.47

brutal for you to enact. It's going to break your heart. Yeah. And that might be, there is no alcohol

00:06:06.47 – 00:06:14.85

in my home anymore, period. If you lie to me and commit financial infidelity again, then I'm out.

00:06:14.85 – 00:06:20.29

I'm going to go move in with my sister. You have to go to AA. Your boundaries have to be pretty

00:06:20.29 – 00:06:23.21

tough at this point. Is that fair? Yeah.

00:06:24.49 – 00:06:29.21

I can hear it on you. You're worth more than the life you're living right now.

00:06:31.25 – 00:06:34.65

Yeah. Jade, am I crazy?

2Speaker 2
00:06:34.93 – 00:06:42.19

No, you're not crazy. I hate this for you. It's tough. And people all the time, they call in,

00:06:42.19 – 00:06:48.31

and they're talking about issues that aren't, they're not money issues. And here, we're always

00:06:48.31 – 00:06:53.07

telling people, like, combine your money, combine your money. But there are times where it's like,

00:06:53.59 – 00:06:56.39

there are situations where it's like, no, don't combine your money. Like you said,

00:06:56.61 – 00:07:01.25

you seek counsel. And I tell people all the time, there's this acronym I use about keeping your

00:07:01.25 – 00:07:06.55

money safe. And it's like, if you're in these situations, like our friend calling in here,

00:07:06.59 – 00:07:12.07

Laura, where you're concerned, the first thing is you need to seek counsel. That's the S.

00:07:12.07 – 00:07:15.87

You got to seek counsel. And the A is if there's abuse, and if there's addiction,

00:07:16.07 – 00:07:20.59

that's when you got to do it. Or the F, financial infidelity. That's what we're looking at. And

00:07:20.59 – 00:07:23.95

then they're going to give you the E, which is you can evaluate your options based on the

00:07:23.95 – 00:07:29.15

boundaries you have. Because I'd like to say that it's as easy as, all right, move out tomorrow.

00:07:29.49 – 00:07:34.91

But it's not, it's never that easy. Never. And there's always a wake. You know what I'm saying?

00:07:34.99 – 00:07:41.25

Always. And so I would just encourage anybody who's in that situation, like I said, abuse,

00:07:41.25 – 00:07:45.69

addiction, financial infidelity. Yeah, you're not, like you said, you're not safe in your own home.

00:07:45.81 – 00:07:53.67

And that person cannot have continued access to the things that make you safe in your family,

00:07:53.71 – 00:07:57.45

that keeps your kids safe. Because if you have somebody who's spending all the money on substance,

00:07:57.91 – 00:08:02.01

and your kid can't have groceries, and your kid can't eat, and you can't get to work because

00:08:02.01 – 00:08:05.81

there's no money for gas. Yeah, you got to put some boundaries in place. And you have to say,

00:08:05.81 – 00:08:11.37

like you said, that in my home, there will be none of this. And until this happens,

00:08:11.63 – 00:08:15.73

you will not have access. And that's probably the toughest line that you can lay down.

00:08:15.95 – 00:08:19.37

But that's loving yourself well. And honestly, that's loving them well.

1Speaker 1
00:08:19.63 – 00:08:22.99

Right. And it's loving this thing that we decided to create together, which is called a marriage.

2Speaker 2
00:08:23.15 – 00:08:27.67

That's right. That's right. Oh, it's so tough. I hate that she's going through that. I hate that

00:08:27.67 – 00:08:31.73

it's happening. You know, during a time like this, the holidays where you're supposed to be able to

00:08:31.73 – 00:08:36.35

come together with the ones you love, sometimes you have to create that distance, that separation,

00:08:36.63 – 00:08:41.33

and create that boundary so that ultimately things can get better and you can find healing.

00:08:41.69 – 00:08:42.71

This is The Ramsey Show.

00:08:48.57 – 00:08:52.25

Hey, what's going on? You're listening to The Ramsey Show. By the way, thank you for listening

00:08:52.25 – 00:08:56.85

to The Ramsey Show. I'm your host today, Jade Warshaw. I am joined by my buddy, bestselling

00:08:56.85 – 00:09:02.53

author, host of The Dr. John Deloney Show. The guy's name is Dr. John Deloney. If you were not

00:09:02.53 – 00:09:06.33

sure about that, we are going to take your calls all afternoon. Give us a call. The number is

00:09:06.33 – 00:09:16.43

888-825-5225, and we will help out sort out your situation. Let's go straight to the phone lines.

00:09:16.49 – 00:09:20.65

We've got Anthony in Anchorage, Alaska. What's going on, Anthony?

3Speaker 3
00:09:21.91 – 00:09:23.03

Hey, how are you guys doing today?

2Speaker 2
00:09:23.27 – 00:09:24.85

Doing good. How can we help?

3Speaker 3
00:09:25.91 – 00:09:33.31

I've been struggling with making my payments every month to try and get out of debt. I've

00:09:33.31 – 00:09:39.83

never missed a payment since I've had started building my credit, but I can't afford to make

00:09:39.83 – 00:09:45.79

more than the minimum payments, and I'm never able to catch up. That's the problem I'm facing.

2Speaker 2
00:09:46.23 – 00:09:49.23

How many payments are you trying to make? How much debt do you have?

3Speaker 3
00:09:50.61 – 00:09:56.63

Between me and my wife both, we've got about $30,000 in consumer debt and another $5,000

00:09:56.63 – 00:09:57.45

in student loans.

2Speaker 2
00:09:57.89 – 00:10:01.19

Okay. Can you sort out for me what the $30,000 is?

3Speaker 3
00:10:02.95 – 00:10:10.55

It's all credit card, vet bills, furniture, credit cards, just that division.

2Speaker 2
00:10:10.55 – 00:10:11.39

Various credit lines?

3Speaker 3
00:10:12.75 – 00:10:13.07

Correct.

2Speaker 2
00:10:13.51 – 00:10:19.21

Okay. Can you tell me what you guys are earning each month?

00:10:19.21 – 00:10:21.99

Combined? What you're taking home?

3Speaker 3
00:10:22.99 – 00:10:29.69

Monthly take home after taxes. I get about $5,000 from my job after paying for benefits

00:10:29.69 – 00:10:35.25

and everything. Currently, I'm a full-time student, so I get another $2,200 a month

00:10:35.25 – 00:10:36.81

for my veteran benefits.

2Speaker 2
00:10:37.29 – 00:10:38.81

Okay, cool. What about your wife?

3Speaker 3
00:10:40.11 – 00:10:44.57

My wife just started her own business back in July. Right now, she's only making enough income

00:10:44.57 – 00:10:49.25

to sustain her business, to pay her rent, pay for her supplies and stuff like that.

00:10:49.39 – 00:10:50.65

Okay. So she can't pay herself yet?

00:10:51.43 – 00:10:51.91

Correct.

1Speaker 1
00:10:52.37 – 00:10:58.77

Is there a trajectory on that business? After half a year, is there an honesty reckoning?

00:10:59.27 – 00:11:01.61

Is this a really nice hobby or are we headed somewhere?

3Speaker 3
00:11:03.65 – 00:11:07.81

We've had that conversation a little bit. We pay for her to go to school.

00:11:08.49 – 00:11:13.69

She just started the business in July. Ideally, she needs to be able to help contribute once I

00:11:13.69 – 00:11:16.11

am no longer a full-time student, is the plan right now.

2Speaker 2
00:11:16.37 – 00:11:18.35

What's the nature of the business that she's doing?

3Speaker 3
00:11:19.79 – 00:11:21.05

She is an esthetician.

2Speaker 2
00:11:21.77 – 00:11:25.65

Okay. My question is, is there a way that she can do that business and also

00:11:26.33 – 00:11:28.11

bring in some part-time income as well?

3Speaker 3
00:11:29.47 – 00:11:33.51

That's a discussion we just had last week in regards to her looking into some part-time

00:11:33.51 – 00:11:38.05

work to at least be able to help me pay some of this stuff down because I don't have the time to

00:11:38.05 – 00:11:42.05

pick up any extra shifts between working full-time and going to school full-time.

2Speaker 2
00:11:42.21 – 00:11:42.47

Right.

3Speaker 3
00:11:42.47 – 00:11:43.73

Any extra income.

2Speaker 2
00:11:44.09 – 00:11:45.13

And what does she feel about that?

3Speaker 3
00:11:46.49 – 00:11:51.81

She is open to it. Unfortunately, nothing against my wife. She doesn't have any

00:11:53.45 – 00:11:56.27

college or post-school secondary training.

2Speaker 2
00:11:56.45 – 00:12:00.09

I don't think she needs it. I don't think she needs it to pick up part-time work.

00:12:00.17 – 00:12:05.53

And when I say part-time, go make 20 bucks an hour. I don't care. I just want her bringing

00:12:05.53 – 00:12:10.77

in some form of income and I think that's going to help in many ways. A, it's going to help you

00:12:10.77 – 00:12:14.55

guys get more income in, but two, it's going to help take a little bit of the heat off of her

00:12:14.55 – 00:12:18.25

in this thing that she's trying to build right now. She can still feel like, all right, I'm

00:12:18.25 – 00:12:22.47

building this thing for myself, but I'm also contributing in another way that my family

00:12:22.47 – 00:12:27.15

really needs right now. And that's going to help everybody. So that's kind of something,

00:12:27.27 – 00:12:30.19

put it on the shelf, you and her think about it, pray about it, whatever.

00:12:30.87 – 00:12:38.47

But the reason you called in is you've got this debt here, $35,000 of debt. And you're feeling

00:12:38.47 – 00:12:44.25

the crunch of that because, I mean, it's a lot. It's a lot of payments that you're throwing away.

00:12:44.35 – 00:12:49.29

You mentioned it's $30,000 of various credit lines. So each month you're having to keep

00:12:49.29 – 00:12:53.23

track of that. And I can tell you firsthand, when you've got all those debtors that you've

00:12:53.23 – 00:12:57.69

got to pay, it's just frustrating. It's just a lot to keep track of. And I think you're feeling that.

00:12:59.41 – 00:13:03.95

The advice is the same that I would give anybody, regardless of the amount of debt,

00:13:03.95 – 00:13:09.01

regardless of how many debts, what I would tell you to do is list these debts from smallest to

00:13:09.01 – 00:13:13.41

largest. So those 30,000, I'd go through each one and be like, all right, what is the smallest

00:13:13.41 – 00:13:18.71

balance? And list them from smallest to largest via balance. All right. And then it's like, okay,

00:13:18.75 – 00:13:23.97

now we know what it is. We got to pay these off. And the method to pay that off is simple.

00:13:24.57 – 00:13:29.11

You got to get cash on it. Do you have any cash saved anywhere? That's not retirement money.

3Speaker 3
00:13:30.17 – 00:13:35.69

I don't. All the cash I've had in savings has kind of dwindled over the last year between

00:13:36.23 – 00:13:41.57

my wife going back to school and me kind of supplementing everything. I've been doing the

00:13:41.57 – 00:13:47.71

snowball method a little bit. I had about 40,000 in debt just earlier this summer, and I paid off

00:13:47.71 – 00:13:54.41

some small $1,500, $2,000 bills, whether it's to the vet or for furniture or whatnot. So I've kind

00:13:54.41 – 00:13:58.65

of taken care of all the small stuff that's now coming towards the bigger credit card.

2Speaker 2
00:13:59.09 – 00:13:59.83

Oh, go ahead, John.

1Speaker 1
00:13:59.93 – 00:14:02.81

I was going to say, is this the time? It sounds like you got two people in school,

00:14:02.91 – 00:14:07.37

you got a wife launching a business, and you're working full-time. Either one of two things

00:14:07.37 – 00:14:11.57

might just have to be true this season, that you're going to finish school and you're going to

00:14:11.57 – 00:14:16.77

pause. Your goal is going to be to get out of school debt-free, and then you're going to attack

00:14:16.77 – 00:14:23.23

this when you get your full-time gig. Or I just need to take six months off from school. I need

00:14:23.23 – 00:14:28.47

to take a leave. I've had students do that every single semester. I took a number of leaves across

00:14:28.47 – 00:14:33.75

all my degrees for various things that happened. I had a kid, wife got sick, had to go do this,

00:14:33.83 – 00:14:37.75

wanted to make some more money, whatever the thing was. And just saying, I'm going to go earn

00:14:37.75 – 00:14:43.01

10,000 extra bucks in this semester and get this stuff paid off, or 15,000 bucks or whatever,

00:14:43.13 – 00:14:43.87

I'm like, I've got to do.

2Speaker 2
00:14:44.27 – 00:14:49.27

Or your wife takes full-time work and says, I'm just doing the anesthetician stuff on the side

00:14:49.27 – 00:14:52.75

as a hobby until... But y'all are all trying... They're all trying to do...

1Speaker 1
00:14:54.03 – 00:14:57.99

And dude, I don't want to kick you while you're down, but 30,000 bucks isn't a ton of debt.

00:14:58.19 – 00:15:01.55

That's like you and your wife really making some hard calls for...

2Speaker 2
00:15:01.55 – 00:15:02.79

A very short period of time.

1Speaker 1
00:15:02.79 – 00:15:04.95

18 months max. See what I'm saying?

00:15:05.11 – 00:15:05.31

Right.

00:15:06.03 – 00:15:10.11

So tell me, what's your world look like if you quit school for a semester? You pause school?

3Speaker 3
00:15:12.01 – 00:15:16.13

Part of the reason why I went back to school is because I get that monthly tax-free stipend.

1Speaker 1
00:15:16.85 – 00:15:18.09

Yeah, but is that just going to school?

3Speaker 3
00:15:19.31 – 00:15:22.17

No, and it goes directly into my bank account. I'm a veteran.

00:15:22.41 – 00:15:22.61

Okay.

00:15:22.61 – 00:15:24.79

I get a GI Bill housing benefit.

1Speaker 1
00:15:25.09 – 00:15:25.27

Okay.

3Speaker 3
00:15:25.37 – 00:15:29.87

It pays me $2,200 a month tax-free income directly into my bank account.

1Speaker 1
00:15:30.01 – 00:15:31.75

What's happened to that other $5,000 then?

3Speaker 3
00:15:33.59 – 00:15:39.15

I have a very large mortgage. I owe $470,000 on a mortgage.

00:15:39.41 – 00:15:41.11

I've only been in the house for a year and a half.

2Speaker 2
00:15:41.25 – 00:15:42.07

What's the monthly payment?

3Speaker 3
00:15:43.13 – 00:15:43.61

32.

2Speaker 2
00:15:44.29 – 00:15:47.23

Dang it. Okay, now there's the problem right there.

1Speaker 1
00:15:47.39 – 00:15:48.43

Lead with that next time.

2Speaker 2
00:15:48.43 – 00:15:52.93

Well, John, you detected that. Okay, there's your problem right there.

1Speaker 1
00:15:52.97 – 00:15:53.41

Sell your house, homie.

2Speaker 2
00:15:53.63 – 00:15:56.33

You can't. You're so far above the percentage.

3Speaker 3
00:15:56.71 – 00:16:03.47

I feel like I'm stuck. If I sell my house, I'm going to lose money and go into a rental.

00:16:03.61 – 00:16:04.55

That's going to cost me so much.

2Speaker 2
00:16:04.55 – 00:16:08.73

Well, let's not just be scared of that. Let's see if that's actually true.

00:16:09.23 – 00:16:13.15

So what'd you buy the house for? And what do you owe on it? And what would it sell for?

00:16:13.39 – 00:16:16.61

Let's actually ask those real questions and see if that's true.

3Speaker 3
00:16:17.85 – 00:16:23.89

We were renting. I was paying $2,500 a month in rent. This was the beginning of 2022.

00:16:24.45 – 00:16:29.85

I looked into purchasing our home. We found a home, purchased it in May of 2022.

00:16:31.07 – 00:16:36.79

Four and a half percent interest. It was roughly, all the fees ended up being close to $500,000.

2Speaker 2
00:16:37.55 – 00:16:38.85

So what do you owe on it?

3Speaker 3
00:16:40.87 – 00:16:41.75

$472,000.

2Speaker 2
00:16:41.83 – 00:16:42.83

And what can you sell it for?

3Speaker 3
00:16:44.53 – 00:16:49.43

I don't have a locked in estimate. According to my mortgage broker,

00:16:49.63 – 00:16:52.53

I need somebody to come out and re-evaluate the home to get it up to date.

2Speaker 2
00:16:52.69 – 00:16:58.23

If I'm you, I'm starting to get those numbers. And I am holding on as tight as I can for the

00:16:58.23 – 00:17:02.07

next few months because I want you to own it two years so that you don't, if you do

00:17:02.07 – 00:17:07.83

have a windfall on this, that you're not hit with capital gains. And I want you to seriously

00:17:07.83 – 00:17:12.43

consider, like, if I was your mama, I'd be like, you better do it. Sell this house.

00:17:13.65 – 00:17:23.71

It's half. It's so much. There's not a trajectory that you have shown us that gets you there in the

00:17:23.71 – 00:17:28.27

next even five years. Your wife's building a business, you're in school, the business is

00:17:28.27 – 00:17:32.95

not making money yet, and you're in debt. And I just think that when you get out from under

00:17:32.95 – 00:17:37.75

this house, you are going to take a giant deep breath. You don't have any kids yet, right?

3Speaker 3
00:17:38.51 – 00:17:39.77

I have a six-year-old.

2Speaker 2
00:17:39.77 – 00:17:44.73

Okay, you have a six-year-old. So we're finding something. Honestly, at this point,

00:17:44.83 – 00:17:48.83

anything that's less expensive than the over $3,000 that you're spending right now

00:17:49.35 – 00:17:50.75

is going to help you.

1Speaker 1
00:17:51.09 – 00:17:55.31

And you're a veteran, brother. So think of it through those eyes, through that lens.

00:17:55.77 – 00:17:59.35

When you're faced with a whole bunch of variables and they don't all add up,

00:17:59.67 – 00:18:03.75

let's begin to pull variables off the table. Things that we thought were absolutes, they're

00:18:03.75 – 00:18:07.87

not. Your wife doesn't have to start a new business right now. You don't have to be in

00:18:07.87 – 00:18:13.07

school. You don't have to be in a big $500,000 house. All these things that come off the table,

00:18:13.49 – 00:18:18.41

let's seek freedom. Let's don't seek to try to duct tape this chaos together.

00:18:18.61 – 00:18:20.75

Let's seek freedom over all else right now.

00:18:23.99 – 00:18:28.89

This show is sponsored by BetterHelp. This is Deloney, and I'm always railing against

00:18:28.89 – 00:18:33.35

social media, especially in the summer, because everyone uploads the highlight reels of their

00:18:33.35 – 00:18:37.93

perfect bodies and perfect vacations and perfect kids. And I know they're not real.

00:18:38.23 – 00:18:42.81

And I also know that I'm blessed beyond my wildest dreams, but I still find myself

00:18:42.81 – 00:18:48.03

wishing my life was like other people's. And based on the data, I know this is happening to you too.

00:18:48.49 – 00:18:52.79

Comparison is wired into us, but comparison can also become the thief of joy,

00:18:52.79 – 00:18:57.07

because we can feel like we're not enough and begin acting and thinking in ways we would

00:18:57.07 – 00:19:02.41

never think otherwise. When all gets to be too much, think about contacting BetterHelp.

00:20:19.27 – 00:20:23.55

right up there. So thank you for doing that. As a matter of fact, we would like you to consider

00:20:24.13 – 00:20:28.67

continuing to do all that. So keep listening. And while you're listening, go ahead and get on there

00:20:28.67 – 00:20:34.85

chances are it can help somebody else and you might be the catalyst to make that happen. So

00:20:39.35 – 00:20:45.39

like, subscribe, share. We would be truly, truly thankful in this season of thankfulness.

00:20:45.73 – 00:20:51.21

So thank you so much. Let's go to the phone lines. We've got Jackson in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

1Speaker 1
00:20:51.79 – 00:20:58.15

What's going on, Jackson? Sorry, Miss Jackson. What's up? Hi, guys. Thank you so much for taking

3Speaker 3
00:20:58.15 – 00:21:04.27

my call. So I'm going to try and articulate my question best I can. So I'm fairly new to

00:21:04.27 – 00:21:09.99

listening to you guys over the last couple of weeks. And I've introduced this whole plan to

00:21:09.99 – 00:21:15.81

my wife and we've got ourselves in quite the hole. And my main question is she deals with a lot of

00:21:16.37 – 00:21:21.93

mental illness and she has a really hard time like seeing the big picture. And honestly,

00:21:22.05 – 00:21:27.45

it's all very overwhelming for me as well. But I'm kind of like the backbone to everything

00:21:27.45 – 00:21:34.35

and just trying to get her fully on board with everything and

00:21:35.15 – 00:21:40.03

not thinking that this isn't something that we're capable of doing.

2Speaker 2
00:21:41.73 – 00:21:45.07

Well, when you say she... What's she struggling with specifically?

3Speaker 3
00:21:46.31 – 00:21:52.65

She has depression, anxiety. She's been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder,

00:21:53.51 – 00:21:55.77

ADD. So it's just kind of like a handful of things.

1Speaker 1
00:21:56.47 – 00:22:00.51

So the first thing, if somebody... If I meet somebody and they come to me and say,

00:22:00.59 – 00:22:03.75

I've been diagnosed with all of these things, the first thing I'm going to tell them,

00:22:03.83 – 00:22:08.51

whether it's my friend or that somebody's in a coaching situation with me or a family member,

00:22:08.51 – 00:22:13.63

I would tell them, I need you to go find a new provider and get reevaluated.

00:22:14.65 – 00:22:20.75

Because that's a lot of variation there. It's all over the place.

00:22:21.51 – 00:22:21.55

Yeah.

00:22:22.13 – 00:22:28.27

As a part of... I mean, it's a very different conversation if somebody truly has borderline

00:22:28.27 – 00:22:34.55

personality disorder and their emotional life feels like it's on fire. That's a different

00:22:34.55 – 00:22:39.53

conversation trying to get somebody to learn about how their emotions interact with reality,

00:22:39.67 – 00:22:43.61

with the real world, as well as it's a different conversation when you're talking to somebody who's

00:22:43.61 – 00:22:50.49

struggling with depression or anxiety. So I would start there. The second thing I would start with

00:22:50.49 – 00:22:58.29

is this. Does your wife know that her feelings are very big on things, whether they're up or

00:22:58.29 – 00:23:01.37

whether they're down? Can y'all agree on that? Yeah.

00:23:01.37 – 00:23:04.67

Okay. Will she trust you?

3Speaker 3
00:23:07.57 – 00:23:11.11

I mean, she does trust me, I think, to an extent.

1Speaker 1
00:23:11.47 – 00:23:13.63

Your voice tells me absolutely not, even a little bit.

3Speaker 3
00:23:14.91 – 00:23:21.29

I think she trusts me, but like I said, she just has a hard time seeing the bigger picture.

1Speaker 1
00:23:21.59 – 00:23:25.79

That's not what I'm asking for here. Asking somebody who has borderline personality disorder,

00:23:25.85 – 00:23:29.85

asking somebody who's got anxiety disorders to see a bigger picture is truly unfair,

00:23:30.41 – 00:23:35.37

especially at the beginning. What I'll often ask is, will you hold my hand? Do you trust me?

00:23:36.29 – 00:23:40.23

And you watch somebody's shoulders drop and they go, I do, and say, okay,

00:23:41.71 – 00:23:47.65

we've got to make a budget because I don't feel safe. Okay. And my body feels like you're taking

00:23:47.65 – 00:23:51.23

something from me. You're stealing something from me. My body feels like it's on fire. I feel like

00:23:51.23 – 00:23:56.37

I hate you. I feel like you're the greatest person. Whatever they're feeling, great. Do you trust me?

00:23:56.37 – 00:24:04.83

Yes. To make the next right choice for us. Yes. And that only works if they are seeing a provider

00:24:04.83 – 00:24:12.33

that they can get some true clinically based support and help for. Right. Right. And if you

00:24:12.33 – 00:24:17.85

can't get that basic level of trust, then you have to start asking yourself, how can I make

00:24:17.85 – 00:24:23.33

sure that we are safe? Because we can't work in partnership together at this moment. We will

00:24:23.33 – 00:24:29.13

someday, but we can't right now. Does that make sense? Yeah. And really, I hope I'm not over

00:24:29.13 – 00:24:33.47

clarifying it, but I'm trying to over clarify it because you're allowing you're like, I'm the

00:24:33.47 – 00:24:38.11

backbone. I got to do all this stuff. I got to make her happy. With all four of those diagnostics,

00:24:38.13 – 00:24:43.69

you can never be quote unquote happy. Right. You just gave everyone, I've got a couple of those

00:24:43.69 – 00:24:48.37

diagnostics. Dude, sometimes I don't care what I feel like. I just got to do the next right thing.

00:24:49.31 – 00:24:52.83

Yeah. So I haven't spent my life trying to be happy. I've spent my life saying,

00:24:53.05 – 00:24:57.41

if I do these things, my body's going to feel good at the end of the day. Does that make sense?

00:24:57.49 – 00:25:01.23

Right. That took a lot of therapy, a lot of counseling. My wife's pretty amazing. I have

00:25:01.23 – 00:25:05.93

some great friends, right? I had to do a whole lot of stuff to get here. Yeah. So don't try to solve

00:25:05.93 – 00:25:10.83

it all at once, but I definitely would start with getting a new, having a new conversation. Do you

3Speaker 3
00:25:10.83 – 00:25:17.77

have a particular issue y'all are struggling with right now? I mean, we, I just did the math and we

00:25:17.77 – 00:25:25.63

have over $130,000 in debt. We don't even own a house and we make okay money. She works part

00:25:25.63 – 00:25:32.29

time. I'm working two jobs right now. How much? We're just trying to, before taxes and everything,

00:25:32.37 – 00:25:40.35

I did the math. We made 80,000 this year. I have one of my jobs is 47 and the other one's about 15

00:25:40.35 – 00:25:46.07

and hers is 20. That's all before taxes and everything. But I just don't even know where to

00:25:46.07 – 00:25:51.03

start. We did this debt consolidation thing, which I just feel like was a Band-Aid.

1Speaker 1
00:25:51.77 – 00:25:55.15

It wasn't actually. You took a knife and stuck it in the other leg. That's what that was.

3Speaker 3
00:25:56.21 – 00:26:01.49

And then I did a 401k loan. Yeah. Then you took a knife and stuck it in your arm.

00:26:01.95 – 00:26:06.71

Yeah. What else did you do? We have a lot going on and I just, honestly,

00:26:06.91 – 00:26:12.83

I'm lost. I don't know where to start. I'm trying to get her on page when I don't even know 100%

1Speaker 1
00:26:14.39 – 00:26:18.41

So she's got those challenges. You know what she senses? She feels that you don't know where you

00:26:18.41 – 00:26:22.35

are on the map. Jade's going to walk you on the map, but I want you to hear this before she says

00:26:22.35 – 00:26:28.97

anything. Jade had way, way more debt than that. Me and my wife, we had way, way more debt than

00:26:28.97 – 00:26:35.25

that. That number you just gave me doesn't scare me at all. Not a bit. Okay. You just have to decide

00:26:35.25 – 00:26:39.53

I'm going to go make this thing a priority. Absolutely. And your wife has to make her

00:26:39.53 – 00:26:43.13

healing a priority. You get those two things lined up, man, dude, it's game on.

2Speaker 2
00:26:43.71 – 00:26:48.95

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. I mean, what John said is exactly it. I'm not blinking when I hear $130,000

00:26:48.95 – 00:26:54.73

of debt. I mean, look, it's not good, but don't be scared. Just go, okay. It's like John said,

00:26:54.83 – 00:26:58.33

what's the next right thing that I need to do? And for you, the next right thing,

00:26:58.47 – 00:27:01.27

if you're not on a budget, you need to get on a budget. Are you on one?

3Speaker 3
00:27:01.81 – 00:27:08.89

Um, I, I did the free trial of the every dollar and like, we kind of walked through it a little

00:27:08.89 – 00:27:15.37

bit together. Um, so we're kind of working through that a little bit, figuring that out.

2Speaker 2
00:27:15.41 – 00:27:19.45

Okay. So this is like new within the last couple of weeks. Okay, good. So Austin's going to pick

00:27:19.45 – 00:27:22.99

up. And after this call, he's going to give you a copy of my book. Money's not a math problem.

00:27:22.99 – 00:27:27.45

And as part of that, you're going to sign up and you're going to get three months free of

00:27:27.45 – 00:27:31.73

every dollar premium, because I think you need premium. That's going to help you walk through

00:27:31.73 – 00:27:36.27

this and you'll get three months free of that to test it out. That's going to be everything

00:27:36.27 – 00:27:41.15

because this budget is going to tell you what's what. Um, I want you guys sitting down and I want

00:27:41.15 – 00:27:46.27

you to complete your budget. If you haven't already tonight, because you just getting a

00:27:46.27 – 00:27:50.37

handle on the numbers, even if it's not good, like, right. Even if you do that budget and you

00:27:50.37 – 00:27:55.53

realize, man, we're, we're negative $75 every month. No wonder there's a problem. Just seeing

00:27:55.53 – 00:27:58.55

it and knowing what it is, is still going to make you exhale and be like, all right,

00:27:58.65 – 00:28:03.63

I know what it is. Now I see we have an income problem, or you might do that budget and realize,

00:28:03.69 – 00:28:07.95

Hey, we have a decent amount. It just looks like we're spending too much. And if that's the case,

00:28:08.01 – 00:28:12.43

again, you're going to exhale and know, okay, we've got to cut back on our spending. And so,

00:28:12.47 – 00:28:16.31

or it's a combination of both. And so just knowing that is going to go, okay, I see what the game

00:28:16.31 – 00:28:22.81

plan is. Now we need to create a plan of attack. Does that make sense? Yes. Because at the end of

00:28:22.81 – 00:28:26.75

the day, the math is the same. You still have to make the payments. And this is for anybody

00:28:26.75 – 00:28:32.53

listening. Debt doesn't go away unless you make the payments. You can't move it over here. You

00:28:32.53 – 00:28:37.91

can't take out this loan and cover it up with your mortgage. You have to actually make the payments.

00:28:38.05 – 00:28:44.35

And for most of us, that's called going out and getting an old fashioned J O B. Okay. You can't

00:28:44.35 – 00:28:50.25

get aside the work. You have to put on work boots, do the work. You have to cut back your spending.

00:28:50.25 – 00:28:56.17

No more chilies, no more Applebee's. You got to do the work. You got to make the sacrifice and

00:28:56.17 – 00:29:00.85

trust and believe it will show. You can't do this and kind of do it sneakily or do it without

00:29:00.85 – 00:29:04.69

anybody noticing. You're going to see it and you're going to feel it and it's going to suck

00:29:04.69 – 00:29:08.07

for a minute, but then you're going to be out of debt. This is the Ramsey show.

3Speaker 3
00:29:11.33 – 00:29:17.63

Hey, listen up. Everyone is at risk of identity theft. I don't care if you're a hermit living

00:29:17.63 – 00:29:23.65

off the grid, listening to the show on a battery powered radio, all of your data collected by every

00:29:23.65 – 00:29:29.55

company you've ever done business with lives online, your bank, your doctor's office, retailers,

00:29:29.71 – 00:29:35.75

the apps on your phone, the gas station where you have loyalty rewards. They all store your info

00:29:35.75 – 00:29:42.01

online, making them ripe for a cyber attack or data breach. That's why I've been telling people

00:29:42.01 – 00:29:49.63

for almost 25 years, they need an ID theft protection plan. And the only one I've ever

00:29:49.63 – 00:29:54.67

recommended is from Zander insurance. They monitor your personal and financial info,

00:29:54.93 – 00:30:00.77

even your home title and take over the work. If you become a victim, it's the most thorough and

00:30:00.77 – 00:30:07.41

affordable plan out there. I even have it for my family and our entire team visit zander.com or

00:30:07.41 – 00:30:17.85

call 800-356-4282. You are listening to the Ramsey show. I am Jade. This is John. We're with

2Speaker 2
00:30:17.85 – 00:30:23.23

you for the next couple hours, taking your calls. The number is 888-825-5225. If you want to give

00:30:23.23 – 00:30:28.65

us a call, I'm kind of hype. I'm not going to lie tomorrow's Thanksgiving. I'm excited about that,

00:30:28.67 – 00:30:34.17

but more than that, my favorite part of Thanksgiving is actually the day after Thanksgiving,

1Speaker 1
00:30:34.17 – 00:30:40.09

not just because of the leftovers, John. I can imagine the leftovers in your home are pretty

2Speaker 2
00:30:40.09 – 00:30:43.37

amazing. Are you cooking a spread? Look, they're on point. I'm not going to lie about that,

00:30:43.49 – 00:30:47.71

but more so I'm talking about Black Friday. I know. Black Friday, it's game on. Come on.

1Speaker 1
00:30:47.77 – 00:30:52.81

Do y'all go shopping for Black Friday? I go to the woods because I have self-control problems. And so

2Speaker 2
00:30:52.81 – 00:30:56.97

I just take myself out of internet range. John, you're different, man. And I'm not mad at that.

1Speaker 1
00:30:57.01 – 00:31:00.55

You're doing right. But the rest of us- Listen, the other night I was having dessert with my

00:31:00.55 – 00:31:05.21

wife and I couldn't stop. And I literally took my fork and I just hit it under the floor. And

00:31:05.21 – 00:31:07.55

she goes, did you do that on purpose? And I go, yeah, but I'm not eating anymore.

00:31:07.55 – 00:31:11.09

Because you couldn't stop eating the dessert? I could have. I didn't want to stop. So I have

2Speaker 2
00:31:11.09 – 00:31:14.63

to put these roadblocks in front of me, man. Well, what was the dessert? Now we want to know

1Speaker 1
00:31:14.63 – 00:31:18.39

what it was. Do you know what? It was just sugar and goo and whatever. I don't know.

2Speaker 2
00:31:18.61 – 00:31:23.73

So John's in his house like Winnie the Pooh, just gobbling down bags of sugar and honey.

1Speaker 1
00:31:23.87 – 00:31:26.15

I love it. I love this time of year, man. I love it.

2Speaker 2
00:31:26.15 – 00:31:31.07

Me too. Not going to lie. Black Friday, I love it. We're the type, we get up early,

00:31:31.23 – 00:31:37.53

we go out into the madness. I love it. I will elbow somebody for an air fryer in two seconds.

00:31:37.75 – 00:31:43.37

I love the madness. I save up a budget and I put the line item and I just-

00:31:43.37 – 00:31:45.69

Just get wild. I love it. I don't know what it is,

00:31:45.77 – 00:31:51.77

Best Buy. I don't need anything at Best Buy, but I want to be there at 7am going crazy.

00:31:51.77 – 00:31:56.81

But here at Ramsey Solutions, we are also having a Black Friday sale. And the good thing is,

00:31:57.07 – 00:32:01.19

you don't have to put anybody in a headlock to get your deal because it's on the interwebs, John.

1Speaker 1
00:32:01.27 – 00:32:04.09

You can just roll over, pick up your phone and start clicking.

2Speaker 2
00:32:04.21 – 00:32:08.15

You don't even have to get out of bed, but we've got early access to some of our best deals

00:32:08.15 – 00:32:12.15

of the year. You can get meaningful gifts for your whole family, your friends,

00:32:12.65 – 00:32:16.75

everybody as low as $8. That is nothing. Hey, you're about to learn this because

1Speaker 1
00:32:16.75 – 00:32:21.17

you got a book coming out. This is the time of year when Dave just starts selling all your stuff.

00:32:21.17 – 00:32:24.71

And for those of you who don't know, we make a commission off the sales price and we always

00:32:24.71 – 00:32:28.47

love it when Dave's like, ah, how about five bucks? Thanks, Dave. Thanks, Dave.

2Speaker 2
00:32:28.71 – 00:32:31.75

That's all right. Because his are on sale too. I mean, you can get best-selling books like

00:32:31.75 – 00:32:36.43

The Total Money Makeover. That's his book. So if he's putting it on sale for $10, look, we're all

1Speaker 1
00:32:36.97 – 00:32:39.59

being generous. We're in a little bit different place. We're in a little bit different place.

2Speaker 2
00:32:39.69 – 00:32:43.99

Really? I'm just kidding. Of course you are. Baby Steps Millionaires, here's your book,

00:32:44.09 – 00:32:47.09

John. Own your past, chain your future for just $10.

00:32:47.37 – 00:32:48.17

Why not, man? Why not?

00:32:48.17 – 00:32:54.85

Put it for 70% off. There you go. Financial Peace University, I will say, this is my favorite one.

00:32:55.09 – 00:33:01.73

The fact that you can get Financial Peace University for under $60 is madness. Sheer craziness. I tell

00:33:01.73 – 00:33:05.89

folks all the time, the principles in Financial Peace University are what helped my husband and

00:33:05.89 – 00:33:10.87

I pay off almost half a million dollars of debt. So technically, this product is worth half a

00:33:10.87 – 00:33:16.79

million dollars and you're getting it for 60. That's crazy. Rachel Cruz Wallet is back. That's

00:33:17.61 – 00:33:22.19

that's a product that somehow is almost never on sale. So the fact that it's on sale is great.

00:33:22.61 – 00:33:27.73

And of course, Questions for Humans cards are on sale. Cards starting at $10. So that's pretty

00:33:27.73 – 00:33:32.45

good. So shop Black Friday. If you're not like me, you don't want to go out into the cold

00:33:32.45 – 00:33:38.65

or out there with crazy folks who will just cut you in line, just roll over in your bed,

00:33:38.77 – 00:33:44.43

turn on your internet and log on to ramsysolutions.com slash store and get yourself a deal

00:33:44.43 – 00:33:49.57

and get you some gifts for everybody in your family. But don't go over budget doing it.

00:33:49.65 – 00:33:52.91

All right. Is that cool? Cool with me. Let's go to the phone lines. We got

00:33:52.91 – 00:33:57.67

Andrew in Sacramento, California. Hey, what's going on, Andrew?

3Speaker 3
00:33:58.73 – 00:34:00.51

Hey, thank you for taking my call. How you guys doing?

2Speaker 2
00:34:00.75 – 00:34:03.15

We're doing good. I'm cutting up.

1Speaker 1
00:34:03.51 – 00:34:06.19

Are you a Black Friday dude? Like, are you going to go?

3Speaker 3
00:34:06.33 – 00:34:09.39

No, I'm just like you. I'll go to the woods and hide away.

1Speaker 1
00:34:09.73 – 00:34:11.09

I love it.

2Speaker 2
00:34:11.19 – 00:34:13.79

You guys are good. Good job. How can we help?

3Speaker 3
00:34:13.79 – 00:34:20.15

So my question is, I'm 32, I'm debt free besides my mortgage. I have my six months

00:34:20.15 – 00:34:27.57

emergency funds already put aside. My question is about the 15% retirement. Is that gross? Is that

00:34:27.57 – 00:34:33.53

on top of your employer sponsored? Or is that including your employer sponsored? What should

2Speaker 2
00:34:33.53 – 00:34:39.01

I contribute to that? So you want it to be off of your gross income, period.

00:34:40.47 – 00:34:42.99

Okay. So that's it.

3Speaker 3
00:34:44.31 – 00:34:47.39

So gross income, so if I'm already putting money into my employer sponsored,

00:34:47.75 – 00:34:53.97

if that already equals close to 15%, that's fine right there. Should I add more on top of that?

2Speaker 2
00:34:54.79 – 00:34:56.43

Help me understand. Tell me again.

1Speaker 1
00:34:56.73 – 00:35:03.63

So let me say this. So if your employer has a match up to 5% and you put in 5% and they put

00:35:03.63 – 00:35:08.55

in 5%, we want you to put another 10% in. And we want their match to be gravy.

2Speaker 2
00:35:08.95 – 00:35:12.57

Oh, I see what you're saying. Thank you, John. I was confused as to what you're asking. Yeah.

00:35:12.57 – 00:35:18.99

No matter what your company sponsored, you were always doing 15%. And the reason for that,

00:35:19.07 – 00:35:23.81

there's a reason for that. And that is basically, we just want you building the habit of investing.

00:35:24.07 – 00:35:29.43

And the fact is you might move on and go to another company that offers no match or offers a

00:35:29.43 – 00:35:36.31

lower match or offer something different in way of benefits. And we want your budget and your habit

00:35:36.31 – 00:35:42.73

used to, no matter what, I invest 15%. And so that's kind of the reasoning behind that. Fair

3Speaker 3
00:35:42.73 – 00:35:46.41

enough? Yes. And then my second question was,

00:35:47.75 – 00:35:52.95

I want to buy a second home, but I'm not sure if I should focus on paying off this mortgage

00:35:52.95 – 00:35:57.37

first before I start saving up for another home. Because ultimately I want to make this house a

00:35:57.37 – 00:36:02.01

rental property and then move into my forever home. Should I focus on paying off this mortgage

00:36:02.01 – 00:36:08.13

first or is it okay to start saving up more money for my forever home and then just have renters

2Speaker 2
00:36:08.13 – 00:36:12.57

end up paying this mortgage off? Yeah. If it were me, I'd pay off your current home first. That's

00:36:12.57 – 00:36:16.89

what we call baby step seven is once you've paid that house off and you're completely free. And

00:36:16.89 – 00:36:20.97

then think about how much money you would have saved up not having a mortgage that you could

00:36:20.97 – 00:36:27.01

quickly save up and pay cash for another residence that you decide to be a rental, or maybe you move

00:36:27.01 – 00:36:30.93

in that one and make your current one a rental. You've got so many options. The only thing that I

00:36:30.93 – 00:36:37.39

would say is whatever you end up buying after your primary residence, buy it in cash, dude.

00:36:38.89 – 00:36:41.09

Okay. Yeah. So this is kind of like...

1Speaker 1
00:36:42.37 – 00:36:45.57

I can just hear like, wah, wah. Yeah, I know, but...

00:36:46.07 – 00:36:50.17

Hey, bro, this is exactly what I'm doing. Okay.

00:36:51.01 – 00:36:57.29

We paid off the house that we live in and now we're saving up for... Dude, it's the worst, man,

00:36:57.29 – 00:37:02.01

because we could go pull a mortgage right now and I'm not putting myself right back in that

00:37:02.01 – 00:37:08.19

mess. And I hate it because everything in my life feels like it would be better if I just did that,

00:37:08.35 – 00:37:12.49

except for the one thing, which would mean I'm back to being owned by a bank.

00:37:13.49 – 00:37:16.45

And I don't like that. I don't like being owned. That's true.

2Speaker 2
00:37:16.63 – 00:37:22.45

Andrew, you're 32 and you're not the only one. I think that there's just such this rush that

00:37:22.45 – 00:37:27.79

we feel like I got to hurry up and get this and I got to hurry up and get my rental and I got to

00:37:27.79 – 00:37:33.23

hurry up. And I think sometimes... And I get it. We all want to get to this perceived place of

00:37:33.23 – 00:37:38.87

success and like, okay, I made it with my money. We're all trying to get there, but we really have

00:37:38.87 – 00:37:42.71

to be careful in all of our getting that we're also getting the right understanding and that

00:37:42.71 – 00:37:48.15

we're doing things correctly so that it doesn't end in folly, right? Because the worst thing ever

00:37:48.15 – 00:37:53.97

would be if you were like, I'm so excited to be rich and I'm so excited to be successful that I

00:37:53.97 – 00:37:57.99

don't pay off this mortgage and I go get this other mortgage. And now you're wrapped with debt

00:37:57.99 – 00:38:01.37

and you thought you were going to rent it out, but your renters are kind of wishy-washy and they're

00:38:01.37 – 00:38:05.63

not paying. And then the roof breaks and then there's earthquake, like all these things that

00:38:05.63 – 00:38:12.43

have the ability to happen. It will feel totally different had you not gone into debt as opposed

00:38:12.43 – 00:38:16.29

to being strapped with debt. And I'm like, you're in Sacramento. So whatever real estate you're

00:38:16.29 – 00:38:21.93

buying is not going to be a hundred thousand dollars is all I'm saying. So you don't want

00:38:21.93 – 00:38:28.75

that strapped to you. I would much rather approach this knowing, hey, like I get to control this and

00:38:28.75 – 00:38:35.61

time is not pushing me to do anything. I make the call. Does that make sense? And I think that way

00:38:35.61 – 00:38:40.19

you're walking along that path and you're doing it with the least amount of risk, but honestly,

00:38:40.19 – 00:38:42.91

the ultimate amount of reward, if you really think about it.

1Speaker 1
00:38:43.79 – 00:38:50.31

And we just, dude, we just came out of a scenario where I think in your state,

00:38:51.37 – 00:38:55.03

it was illegal to evict people, even if they weren't paying during COVID.

2Speaker 2
00:38:55.31 – 00:38:56.03

That's true.

1Speaker 1
00:38:56.61 – 00:39:01.59

But that mortgage still has to be paid, right? And so it's not like we're just making this up

00:39:01.59 – 00:39:08.01

for fun. It's just, we just take call after call after thousands and thousands of calls of people

00:39:08.01 – 00:39:11.17

going, what do I do? What do I do? What do I do? And that's a good point, John.

00:39:11.29 – 00:39:12.57

Cause we just, we just went through it.

2Speaker 2
00:39:12.79 – 00:39:16.09

That's a good point. It's not like we're trying to think of every bad thing that could ever happen.

1Speaker 1
00:39:16.25 – 00:39:18.53

No, we just take the calls of the thing, the real things that do happen.

2Speaker 2
00:39:18.67 – 00:39:22.67

Yeah. And the fact of the matter is most of our best laid plans are with this assumption

00:39:22.67 – 00:39:24.29

that everything will go well.

1Speaker 1
00:39:24.37 – 00:39:26.95

Even the phrase, I'm going to buy my dream home. Dude, no, you're not.

2Speaker 2
00:39:27.19 – 00:39:30.91

Yeah. We don't know. We don't know. You just don't know what's going to happen.

00:39:31.07 – 00:39:35.73

And for that reason alone, I just love operating with as less risk as I can.

00:39:35.73 – 00:39:41.59

So anyway, um, thanks for listening guys. Uh, that does it for this hour of the show.

00:39:41.69 – 00:39:45.95

Be sure to hang on with us. John and I will be back for the next hour. This is the Ramsey show.

00:39:50.53 – 00:39:56.47

Live from the headquarters of Ramsey solutions. It's the Ramsey show where we help people build

00:39:56.47 – 00:40:02.97

wealth, do work that they love and create amazing relationships. I'm your host, Jade Warshaw.

00:40:02.97 – 00:40:08.21

I am joined by Dr. John Deloney, who is making silly faces at the camera. If you're watching

00:40:08.21 – 00:40:15.51

on YouTube, we're going to take your calls all hour. Give us a call. The number is 888-825-5225.

00:40:15.71 – 00:40:19.49

And we're going to try to help you out. Hey, it's the day before Thanksgiving and I am excited.

00:40:20.37 – 00:40:25.59

Um, I've actually been really on 10 this whole month because John,

1Speaker 1
00:40:25.99 – 00:40:27.97

you got your, your fancy book out.

2Speaker 2
00:40:28.13 – 00:40:30.17

Well, I don't know how fancy it is, but I'm pretty proud of it.

1Speaker 1
00:40:30.17 – 00:40:35.25

Super fancy. Number one, you're on a cover and you're fancy and two, the stuff in it's awesome.

00:40:35.67 – 00:40:40.89

And three, we sold a bajillion redefining anxiety, quick reads, and your book is

00:40:40.89 – 00:40:44.73

way surpassing the way mine got out. So it's a pretty, pretty exciting man.

2Speaker 2
00:40:45.01 – 00:40:49.79

Well, it is exciting and you can still pre-order it. Uh, the actual drop date,

00:40:49.79 – 00:40:54.27

as they say, it's not until December. So until then pre-order, because you get some cool things,

00:40:54.27 – 00:41:00.59

uh, in the process, you get three months free of every dollar premium, which is the business,

00:41:00.67 – 00:41:06.43

if I do say so myself. So go ahead and pre-order it today. Here's the thing. It's $10. Like it's

00:41:06.43 – 00:41:10.93

$10. You can't even get, you can't get anything for $10 anymore, John.

1Speaker 1
00:41:11.09 – 00:41:11.97

Two cups of coffee.

2Speaker 2
00:41:12.07 – 00:41:15.31

Two cups of coffee. And not at Starbucks. Cause you don't even think about it. Cause Starbucks

00:41:15.31 – 00:41:15.99

drinks are.

1Speaker 1
00:41:16.01 – 00:41:17.21

That's a cup and a half at Starbucks.

2Speaker 2
00:41:17.33 – 00:41:23.59

Okay. $10. And you can finally get to the bottom of why you have not been able to
