2023-09-01 00:30:06

Welcome to America This Week, with Matt Taibbi and Walter Kirn, the national news wrap-up so true, we recommend you stow all sharp objects before reading.

www.racket.news

1Speaker 1
00:03.30 – 00:05.84

Welcome to American This Week, I'm Matt Taibbi.

2Speaker 2
00:06.22 – 00:07.38

And I'm Walter Kern.

1Speaker 1
00:08.02 – 00:09.94

Walter, how are you and where are you?

2Speaker 2
00:10.84 – 00:14.96

I'm in a bathroom in a New York hotel room.

00:15.62 – 00:18.56

You'll notice the fixtures behind me.

00:19.66 – 00:21.44

I have retreated to the bathroom now.

00:22.78 – 00:25.62

They're even worse out there than they are in here.

00:25.62 – 00:36.40

I also have no voice given that I choked on a supplement the other day and had to induce

00:36.40 – 00:41.80

a kind of retching in order to get it out, rather than call my wife for the Heimlich,

00:41.88 – 00:43.32

which I would have found embarrassing.

1Speaker 1
00:45.62 – 00:51.78

That's an interesting calculation because maritally, you don't want to be owing, right?

2Speaker 2
00:53.22 – 00:54.34

You're exactly right.

00:54.34 – 00:57.18

Like, remember that time I gave you the Heimlich?

01:03.82 – 01:06.86

That's a Category 4 debt in marriage, you know.

1Speaker 1
01:07.12 – 01:08.26

Right, yes, exactly.

2Speaker 2
01:08.90 – 01:17.46

Rather than that, I kneeled on the floor on all fours like a camel and deliberately retched

01:17.46 – 01:20.10

up these horrible pills I'd taken.

01:20.96 – 01:22.98

I don't know what I was hoping.

01:22.98 – 01:26.86

Some boost to my masculinity or my vitality.

01:26.98 – 01:27.68

I'm not sure.

01:27.80 – 01:34.02

It wasn't worth it, but I scorched my throat, and it's just terrible, so I apologize.

1Speaker 1
01:34.44 – 01:35.74

Oh my goodness.

01:35.94 – 01:38.72

Do you still feel it?

2Speaker 2
01:39.14 – 01:45.84

You know, whenever you've had something in your lung that was larger than a pea, you

01:45.84 – 01:47.26

can still feel it.

01:49.68 – 01:54.60

The lung has a kind of muscle memory for obstructions.

1Speaker 1
01:56.46 – 01:57.82

Lungs don't play that.

01:59.22 – 02:01.46

They're not about that at all.

02:02.84 – 02:04.18

Well, I'm sorry to hear that, Walter.

02:04.34 – 02:05.50

That's terrible.

2Speaker 2
02:06.52 – 02:08.14

But I'm fired up today.

02:08.48 – 02:09.74

I'm just fired up.

02:09.82 – 02:10.54

I don't know why.

1Speaker 1
02:11.52 – 02:13.12

Well, I think we both are.

02:13.82 – 02:15.96

I think a line has been crossed.

2Speaker 2
02:18.28 – 02:19.18

Another line.

1Speaker 1
02:19.84 – 02:27.52

Well, no, but this one pissed me off in a way that I'm not used to.

02:27.56 – 02:31.02

I don't usually take this stuff personally, but we should set it up.

02:32.76 – 02:38.62

So in the last week or so, a series of things have happened that have dramatically advanced

02:40.24 – 02:44.14

the landscape of internet censorship, speech suppression.

02:44.14 – 02:50.70

The European Union, their Digital Services Act went into force, and we're going to get

02:50.70 – 02:57.66

into what that means because there's some aspects to that that should really freak out

02:58.38 – 02:59.52

anybody in the United States.

02:59.70 – 03:05.38

But particularly if you live in Europe and you don't know what this is, you're going

03:05.38 – 03:09.92

to want to look up this law pretty quick because it's dramatic.

03:09.92 – 03:17.58

And for Americans, it's clearly the future for us.

03:17.70 – 03:18.60

I mean, this is what's coming.

03:19.76 – 03:23.78

But then here in the United States, we had a number of incidents.

03:25.44 – 03:30.32

There was an incident involving an American in Germany named CJ Hopkins who got actually

03:30.32 – 03:38.56

sentenced to 60 days in jail for a book cover that has basically an indistinguishable outline

03:38.56 – 03:46.20

of a swastika on it that he was using critically, not to endorse the Third Reich, but otherwise.

03:47.06 – 03:51.88

So he actually got jail time for speech, a non-story in America.

03:52.06 – 03:54.90

But the big thing was the gray zone.

03:56.70 – 04:04.48

And we've talked before about interruptions to GoFundMe campaigns, but the gray zone,

04:04.48 – 04:12.04

which is Max Blumenthal, Aaron Maté, sort of left-leaning, I guess, anti-war journalists,

04:12.56 – 04:19.72

they had a $125,000 fundraising campaign frozen for no reason at all.

04:21.64 – 04:23.50

And there's a reason why this is different.

04:23.64 – 04:25.46

But Walter, what was your reaction to this news?

04:25.50 – 04:27.56

Because I lost it when I heard about this.

2Speaker 2
04:28.36 – 04:31.54

Well, let's explain briefly what the gray zone is.

04:32.50 – 04:43.10

The gray zone is a website that reports on foreign affairs, mostly, war and peace,

04:43.56 – 04:52.38

and does so rather critically of the U.S. establishment, particularly what Mark Twain

04:52.38 – 04:54.30

would call the war party.

1Speaker 1
04:54.86 – 04:55.10

Right.

2Speaker 2
04:56.12 – 05:04.60

And the sort of permanent neocon, neoliberal, I don't know, neo, neo war party.

05:04.74 – 05:12.92

It reports critically, but using, I think, very high journalistic standards, and it has

05:12.92 – 05:15.82

fine journalists associated with it.

05:16.36 – 05:24.06

And as I understand it, they started a GoFundMe in order to sort of seed the careers at the

05:24.06 – 05:32.94

gray zone of three journalists, younger journalists, who they were hoping to get off the ground.

05:33.50 – 05:36.42

And that was the basis of the campaign.

05:36.70 – 05:38.58

So what happened to it?

1Speaker 1
05:39.42 – 05:46.06

And one of them was Kit Clarenberg, who was detained in England a little while ago for

05:46.06 – 05:48.14

eight hours at Heathrow, if you remember.

05:50.00 – 05:52.38

Just for coming, they just, he's English.

05:53.60 – 05:59.90

He came into the country and was questioned about his sort of views on Ukraine on the

05:59.90 – 06:00.60

way in the country.

06:01.06 – 06:09.48

So this was a, it was a campaign to raise money to basically fund the reporting of Kit

06:10.78 – 06:16.96

Clarenberg, Wyatt Reed, and I'm forgetting who the third person, it might be Anya Parampil.

06:17.02 – 06:17.98

I can't, I can't remember.

06:18.14 – 06:21.82

But they just froze it without any explanation.

2Speaker 2
06:23.08 – 06:24.68

Well, they gave an explanation.

06:25.78 – 06:28.30

External forces, they said.

1Speaker 1
06:28.80 – 06:29.00

Right.

06:29.58 – 06:31.04

What does that mean?

2Speaker 2
06:32.08 – 06:39.00

It means the man in terms of old, you know, Motown music.

06:39.22 – 06:44.26

It means the man or the powers that be.

06:45.66 – 06:53.92

It's one of those spooky euphemistic explanations that they were supposed to understand, I think,

06:54.74 – 06:55.28

implicitly.

06:56.34 – 07:03.10

Now, just so that everybody can sort things into the right piles, is the Gray Zone a left

07:03.10 – 07:04.86

wing or a right wing publication?

1Speaker 1
07:06.28 – 07:08.96

I would say it's, I would say it's left wing.

07:09.60 – 07:15.56

Yeah, I would say that the people who work there would certainly describe themselves

07:15.56 – 07:16.90

as left wing.

07:17.20 – 07:20.10

I think their politics are in that direction.

07:21.96 – 07:29.58

And, you know, I talked to Max yesterday, Max Blumenthal, and he's obviously furious.

07:29.80 – 07:36.60

He sees this as a, just the latest in a way he was almost casual about it because they've

07:36.60 – 07:43.38

dealt with a series of things beginning, you know, including the detention of their

07:43.38 – 07:44.46

reporter, Kit Clarenberg.

07:44.56 – 07:54.60

But also remember, Aaron Maté's name was forwarded by the FBI to Twitter by the Ukrainian

07:54.60 – 07:56.36

Secret Service, the SBU.

07:56.46 – 08:04.86

We found Aaron's name in the Twitter files as on a list of accounts that the Ukrainian

08:04.86 – 08:08.38

government wanted, wanted removed.

08:08.68 – 08:10.14

Now, they didn't do it.

08:10.60 – 08:12.40

Twitter, to its credit, didn't do it.

08:12.40 – 08:15.32

But the FBI passed that note on.

08:17.28 – 08:25.60

And so, GoFundMe has already had a series of episodes that have been politicized.

08:25.98 – 08:31.60

We had the Freedom Convoy last year, at the beginning of last year, where something like

08:31.60 – 08:42.06

$10 million was raised to basically to support the protesting Canadian truckers in the beginning

08:42.06 – 08:42.70

of last year.

08:42.80 – 08:44.82

I think it was actually $7.8 million.

08:45.60 – 08:49.22

And then GoFundMe put a stop to the fundraiser.

2Speaker 2
08:49.78 – 08:54.76

But worse, I believe they identified the donors, did they not?

1Speaker 1
08:55.40 – 08:57.24

I don't, yeah, I'm not.

08:58.20 – 09:03.08

They must have because those donors were then tracked down by some of them by journalists.

09:04.00 – 09:07.50

So, you know, something along those lines.

09:07.64 – 09:11.92

But they did this in conjunction with Canadian authorities.

09:13.18 – 09:18.42

They issued a statement saying, we now have evidence from law enforcement that the previously

09:18.42 – 09:24.24

peaceful demonstration has become an occupation with police reports of violence and other

09:24.24 – 09:25.24

unlawful activity.

09:27.86 – 09:30.76

So, there, at least they cited violence.

09:32.20 – 09:37.04

Remember, there was another incident a couple of years ago that people forget about.

09:37.12 – 09:42.02

I thought this was this significant serious incident, but nobody talks about it because

09:42.02 – 09:43.88

this issue was so radioactive.

09:44.40 – 09:52.98

But Abigail Schreier, the author of the book Irreversible Damage, which looks at the trans

09:52.98 – 10:00.52

movement and really mainly focuses on the question of, you know, why more young girls

10:00.52 – 10:07.70

now are transitioning in a world where previously, you know, mostly it was happening in the other

10:07.70 – 10:08.78

direction, right?

10:08.82 – 10:10.38

It was young men who were transitioning.

10:11.14 – 10:15.42

That book became, it was denounced as transphobic.

10:16.88 – 10:23.02

Amazon refused to run ads from her publisher, Regenery.

10:23.78 – 10:27.58

Kirkus, which reviews everything, did not review her.

10:28.24 – 10:32.80

There was an uprising at Spotify when she went on the Joe Rogan show.

10:34.16 – 10:40.02

But then just sort of quietly amidst all of this, there was a group that tried to raise

10:40.02 – 10:43.04

money because she couldn't advertise on Amazon.

10:43.04 – 10:48.56

There was a group that tried to raise money literally to rent billboard space to publicize

10:48.56 – 10:49.34

her book.

10:49.60 – 10:51.52

And GoFundMe shut that down, too.

10:52.38 – 10:58.72

Now, there have been other incidents, but this is a significant step forward because

10:58.72 – 11:05.72

there couldn't possibly be anything like a legitimate reason to suspend the GoFundMe

11:06.56 – 11:12.62

campaign paying for legitimate reporting of a website that you may disagree with.

11:13.04 – 11:17.48

But they haven't been convicted or even accused of a crime.

11:19.52 – 11:25.96

And they're saying openly that this is external forces that are making this decision.

11:26.88 – 11:28.38

Since when is that OK?

11:28.98 – 11:34.38

This is a dramatic step forward in terms of the suppression of speech in this country

11:34.38 – 11:35.56

and really everywhere.

11:36.36 – 11:42.12

Once they get the lock on the money, that's when it becomes irreversible, I think.

2Speaker 2
11:42.68 – 11:53.26

OK, well, I don't acknowledge or cede the legitimacy of GoFundMe's past demonetizations.

1Speaker 1
11:54.30 – 11:54.94

Oh, I don't either.

2Speaker 2
11:55.08 – 11:59.42

Yeah, and I don't and I certainly don't in this case.

12:00.50 – 12:08.56

Ministry of Truth has now jacked itself in to whatever the Ministry of Prosperity is

12:08.56 – 12:09.40

or whatever.

12:09.64 – 12:13.42

I don't know that there was a Ministry of Finance in Orwell.

12:14.42 – 12:17.66

He didn't quite get this connection.

12:17.90 – 12:25.08

Another knock on Orwell, the prophet who didn't see so completely because he

12:26.12 – 12:31.30

thought that Stalin's Russia was the be-all and end-all of totalitarianism,

12:31.40 – 12:35.74

didn't realize it would get all sexy and modern the way it has.

12:36.62 – 12:41.08

So yeah, they now have a warning.

12:42.30 – 12:47.72

They're bankers, too, because once this news goes out that you're radioactive,

12:48.66 – 12:50.82

who wants to stick with you?

12:50.98 – 12:55.72

I mean, I'm not saying that anyone else has abandoned the gray zone,

12:55.94 – 12:59.14

but I'm sure they're all considering it.

13:02.54 – 13:07.24

Matt, sometimes I feel like we're watching a bowling ball fall from the top floor of

13:07.24 – 13:12.40

a skyscraper and as it crosses the 90th floor on its way down, we go,

13:12.54 – 13:15.16

can you believe it crossed that line?

13:15.66 – 13:20.10

And then it crosses the 89th floor and we go, this is too much.

13:20.68 – 13:24.84

And at the 70th floor, we say, this has to stop.

13:25.56 – 13:31.34

But the truth is the bowling ball is ruled by gravity and is going to go all the way

13:31.34 – 13:32.80

as far as I can tell.

13:33.48 – 13:41.48

And the point at which I'm going to be outraged again is unforeseeable,

13:41.48 – 13:45.22

because shock and surprise no longer do it.

13:45.92 – 13:52.56

We either have to take a very cool, fatalistic view of what's going on,

13:53.28 – 13:58.70

or we have to strategize about how we can change it.

13:59.08 – 14:03.16

And you and I, being journalists, of course, believe that consciousness

14:03.16 – 14:09.34

and raising consciousness is itself a measure of, you know,

14:11.26 – 14:14.68

objection in this case, because we're editorializing.

14:16.92 – 14:21.40

But I fear for, I don't fear for anything anymore.

14:21.40 – 14:27.78

I await the bowling ball hitting, you know, floors 10 and then the ground.

14:27.98 – 14:29.50

Because look at this.

14:30.10 – 14:38.52

The reason they're doing this isn't because the Ukrainian war and the support of it

14:38.52 – 14:40.98

by the American government is in danger.

14:41.58 – 14:44.20

There aren't mass protests on the streets.

14:44.58 – 14:46.46

This isn't the 1960s.

14:46.46 – 14:54.28

Have they had problem one getting through any one of their funding efforts?

14:54.74 – 15:00.24

I mean, you know, the money is sliding to Ukraine without any obstacles.

15:01.06 – 15:05.42

There isn't any anti-war movement to speak of in the United States.

15:05.66 – 15:07.78

So why are they doing this?

15:07.86 – 15:12.22

Why are they acting the way you would expect them to act maybe in crisis

15:12.22 – 15:13.46

or when they're losing?

15:13.46 – 15:21.30

But not when they are passing, you know, billion dollar funding bills every other week.

15:22.02 – 15:24.90

I think they're doing it because they can.

15:25.30 – 15:27.92

This is a raw exercise in power.

15:29.26 – 15:33.62

We're not in a moment of political negotiation where, you know,

15:33.90 – 15:36.70

some big anti-war movement is taking shape.

15:37.54 – 15:39.76

I mean, it's not even the Canadian truckers.

15:39.98 – 15:41.94

There's no one out there with signs.

15:41.94 – 15:48.32

You know, there's some blowback in terms of social media discourse,

15:48.32 – 15:52.40

but it hasn't affected political reality yet.

15:52.80 – 15:57.30

So why are they acting like we're in some kind of,

15:57.30 – 16:02.08

you know, last ditch effort to save an endangered policy?

1Speaker 1
16:04.20 – 16:09.02

Well, the only thing I can think of is that some of this is automated, right?

16:10.62 – 16:16.62

You know, going through the Twitter files, I was looking at some old stories,

16:16.82 – 16:19.44

and I found an incident that we never wrote about,

16:19.58 – 16:27.82

but it's in there involving Bill Gates, where they had hashtags

16:29.72 – 16:31.48

that people were upset about.

16:31.68 – 16:35.40

There was an unnamed client that Twitter described

16:36.06 – 16:40.40

that said they were worried about the hashtag cancel Bill Gates

16:40.40 – 16:42.98

or hashtag expose Bill Gates.

16:43.78 – 16:46.72

And there was internal discussion about this,

16:46.88 – 16:50.74

and they were wondering what to do because we don't have a reason to do it, right?

16:50.84 – 16:56.22

Like that was the problem that these executives were dealing with.

16:56.30 – 17:00.38

We have an upset client who's unnamed, an external client,

17:00.70 – 17:03.54

but we don't have a reason to get rid of this hashtag.

17:03.54 – 17:05.14

Then they went and looked, and they found,

17:05.24 – 17:11.70

oh, we've already denial listed hashtag cancel Bill Gates

17:11.70 – 17:18.64

because it somehow crossed their algorithm.

17:19.38 – 17:24.64

So then they went in, and because they already had an algorithmic strike

17:24.64 – 17:33.16

against this term, they did what they call a proactive denial list.

17:33.16 – 17:36.12

On variations of that.

17:36.36 – 17:40.80

And so I think what happens in this situation,

17:41.24 – 17:46.84

clearly Aaron, Max Blumenthal, Kit Clarenberg,

17:47.82 – 17:52.00

and Anya Parampil and the other members of the gray zone,

17:52.52 – 17:55.72

they're clearly on some kind of list already.

17:56.58 – 17:58.84

Aaron obviously ended up-

2Speaker 2
17:58.84 – 18:06.26

Besides the Ukrainian regime's list,

18:07.96 – 18:12.08

but is it a list at GoFundMe or is a list somewhere

18:12.08 – 18:15.92

in Homeland Security or Defense Department?

18:16.14 – 18:17.30

Where would it exist?

1Speaker 1
18:18.92 – 18:22.64

Well, it could exist in lots of different places.

18:22.90 – 18:27.14

It could be a global engagement center situation.

18:27.14 – 18:31.50

I can't say that with certainty, but would they define

18:34.12 – 18:38.72

the gray zone as being part of a Russian information ecosystem?

18:39.66 – 18:40.30

Probably.

18:42.56 – 18:47.94

And some of these algorithmic techniques, they're one hop or two hop.

18:48.20 – 18:56.06

So if X figure who's banned from GoFundMe already

18:58.38 – 19:03.54

retweets the gray zone, that might trigger something.

19:03.66 – 19:06.74

It's possible that this is an automated decision is all I'm saying.

19:07.48 – 19:09.82

That's in the realm of possibility.

19:11.60 – 19:14.88

But still, as you say, why do it?

19:16.68 – 19:23.24

Once it becomes a news story, rather than pull back immediately,

19:23.24 – 19:29.50

which they haven't done yet, clearly this is still going on.

19:30.50 – 19:36.74

And that's a human decision, just as there were human decisions

19:36.74 – 19:39.56

behind these other incidents involving the playwright,

19:40.04 – 19:46.40

C.J. Hopkins in Germany, or Roger Waters, or even somebody who works for me,

19:46.70 – 19:51.90

Matt Orfalea, he got dinged this week for something ridiculous.

19:53.60 – 19:59.20

Oh, it was a video that we ran last year comparing

20:00.44 – 20:07.66

sort of Trumpian election denialism to the two Democrats in 2016 saying

20:07.66 – 20:08.84

this election is rigged.

20:10.04 – 20:13.12

It was just a series of clips placed side by side.

20:13.24 – 20:17.04

There was no editorial or anything whatsoever.

20:17.46 – 20:21.68

They later reviewed it, said it was suitable for all advertisers,

20:21.68 – 20:24.56

sent us a note saying that.

20:24.74 – 20:27.86

But then subsequently, they had another person re-look at it

20:27.86 – 20:33.54

and decide that this violated their harmful policies.

20:33.86 – 20:34.36

This is YouTube?

20:35.58 – 20:36.52

Yeah, YouTube.

20:38.98 – 20:44.80

And that there was a possibility that it could incite...

20:45.78 – 20:49.58

Let me find the exact language because it's so infuriating.

20:53.02 – 20:56.98

But these are things that are done intentionally.

20:57.34 – 20:57.74

Yeah, let me see.

20:57.92 – 20:59.86

With harmful or dangerous acts.

20:59.88 – 21:02.22

This is the findings from Human Review.

21:03.04 – 21:09.58

Your selection possibly includes glorification,

21:10.02 – 21:13.48

recruitment, or graphic portrayal of dangerous organizations.

21:14.94 – 21:21.04

This is content that may contain situations that may endanger participants,

21:22.36 – 21:24.00

which is just absurd.

21:24.18 – 21:24.62

I mean...

2Speaker 2
21:24.62 – 21:24.92

What bullshit?

21:25.30 – 21:25.92

So, I mean...

1Speaker 1
21:25.92 – 21:26.90

You've seen stuff on my site.

2Speaker 2
21:27.26 – 21:27.44

Yeah.

21:27.62 – 21:36.10

So yeah, just to review, his videos are simply mashups of pre-existing footage

21:37.40 – 21:41.34

pointing out perhaps hypocrisy or conflicts or,

21:41.34 – 21:46.06

you know, just comparing and contrasting the reporting of different stories without

21:46.78 – 21:48.40

overt editorial comment.

21:49.38 – 21:52.66

So, which were the situations that...

21:52.66 – 22:00.30

All of the situations were those at MSNBC and CNN and Fox or whatever it was that he

22:00.30 – 22:01.56

took these clips.

22:03.52 – 22:04.26

Shouldn't...

22:04.26 – 22:08.38

How is it that they don't get, you know,

22:08.38 – 22:11.76

they don't get banned or they don't get flagged, but

22:13.06 – 22:17.64

everything that's purely derived from them gets flagged?

22:17.88 – 22:22.10

I guess it's not just speech anymore that we have to worry about.

22:23.12 – 22:28.50

It's mere exhibition of artifacts in a way that is

22:29.60 – 22:33.50

thought to be unflattering or, quote, dangerous.

22:34.08 – 22:35.36

But isn't it always...

22:35.36 – 22:36.80

I mean, you're the one who knows.

22:36.80 – 22:43.14

Isn't it always a kind of national security argument that they're making?

22:43.64 – 22:49.02

But then there's also a safety argument here as though somehow civil disorder or

22:49.02 – 22:50.58

something is at risk.

1Speaker 1
22:52.26 – 22:54.64

Yeah, you have videos that are marked...

22:57.60 – 23:01.50

Some of those videos were marked unsafe previously.

23:03.58 – 23:07.68

And yes, they are moving into this direction.

23:08.02 – 23:11.06

And this is this whole classification of malinformation.

23:11.88 – 23:13.80

And this is what people don't get.

23:14.00 – 23:19.20

And they're like, oh, what's wrong with taking down fake news or misinformation or

23:19.20 – 23:19.76

disinformation?

23:20.42 – 23:22.80

Well, the problem is they don't just do that.

23:23.20 – 23:27.30

Like, there are all sorts of reasons why things can be taken down.

23:27.30 – 23:36.68

For instance, we saw accounts that were taken down because people entered search

23:36.68 – 23:43.10

terms based on content they had seen from tweets that had been banned.

23:43.86 – 23:50.08

So let's say it was one of those exposed Bill Gates tweets.

23:51.68 – 23:54.12

And there's information in that tweet.

23:54.20 – 23:56.58

They enter a search term that comes from that tweet.

23:56.58 – 24:00.56

That tweet then becomes itself bannable.

24:02.00 – 24:10.16

And so even the act of looking up and checking and reviewing things that actually are facts

24:10.16 – 24:13.14

that aren't, that isn't misinformation, that becomes...

2Speaker 2
24:13.72 – 24:15.24

There's another word for that.

24:15.36 – 24:17.12

That's called thought control.

24:17.46 – 24:23.04

Because the search is not an act of speech in any public sense.

24:23.04 – 24:29.48

It's merely a thought in the mind of the of the searcher that they, you know, that they

24:29.48 – 24:31.46

employ in order to get somewhere.

24:31.94 – 24:38.94

So they're censoring before there has even been a speech act there on the basis of basically

24:38.94 – 24:42.98

articulated thought, typed in, you know.

24:43.78 – 24:47.86

That is cutting it off at the root.

24:48.00 – 24:49.30

I mean, my God.

24:50.10 – 24:56.28

It in other words, there could be no public effect from putting a search term into a computer.

24:56.62 – 25:02.50

You know, no one can argue that that could incite anything or excite anything or, you

25:02.50 – 25:03.68

know, disturb anyone.

25:04.06 – 25:06.56

It was a private act.

1Speaker 1
25:06.82 – 25:09.54

But the private act becomes...

25:09.54 – 25:14.26

It's a private act and yeah, it becomes a public menace.

25:15.64 – 25:25.54

YouTube has already had a policy of dinging and applying strikes to people who have uploaded

25:25.54 – 25:29.98

their videos privately, like they're ready to go.

25:30.12 – 25:32.46

They're on the site, but they haven't been displayed yet.

25:32.64 – 25:38.30

People get strikes for stuff that isn't even public or for making the search terms.

25:39.78 – 25:46.44

But this concept, you know, I mentioned before the, you know, we've decided to proactively

25:48.30 – 25:52.02

denialist, you know, cancel Bill Gates and variations thereof.

25:52.42 – 25:54.90

You know, there's a story that you and I have talked about before.

25:55.34 – 25:58.86

We might as well reveal that, you know, there's something coming about this.

25:58.86 – 26:06.74

But, you know, we found documentation that Twitter was exploring.

26:09.18 – 26:10.80

Let me find the exact language here.

26:11.70 – 26:16.66

There was a tabletop exercise in October of 2020.

26:17.66 – 26:28.00

And at the conclusion of that tabletop exercise, they listed a series of action items.

26:28.86 – 26:32.82

Things that had come out a couple of weeks before the election.

2Speaker 2
26:33.62 – 26:42.16

And the tabletop exercise was entitled or summarized as what?

1Speaker 1
26:43.60 – 26:44.64

Trends election.

2Speaker 2
26:46.30 – 26:51.34

So it was, it came under that heading and what was it about?

26:51.56 – 26:53.22

I mean, what were they gaming?

26:53.58 – 26:54.72

What were they war gaming?

1Speaker 1
26:57.18 – 27:04.02

There's still some unknowns in this story, but what we do know is that they listed a

27:04.02 – 27:09.26

series of things almost like minutes to the meeting.

27:09.98 – 27:17.60

And the first thing they listed was action item, explore proactively the denialist trends

27:17.60 – 27:22.02

related to claims of victory November 3rd through that week.

27:22.98 – 27:26.56

So this gets to what you were saying.

27:28.14 – 27:36.58

Without knowing the exact context of that, we can't say exactly what they were up to,

27:36.98 – 27:45.94

but we do know that proactively deny listing anything is automatically illegitimate censorship.

2Speaker 2
27:46.70 – 27:51.08

Deny listing claims of victory in the upcoming presidential election.

1Speaker 1
27:52.68 – 27:53.42

Right.

27:53.80 – 27:54.26

Yes.

27:54.60 – 28:01.70

Let's explore proactively denialist in claims of victory in the upcoming 2020 presidential

28:01.70 – 28:02.32

election.

28:02.58 – 28:11.22

So somebody was already, whether they employed this or not, they were at least, at least

28:11.22 – 28:19.92

war gaming the idea of proactively denialist thing, which among other things means G amplifying

28:19.92 – 28:27.00

or almost eliminating in some cases, claims of victory by one side or another, like they

28:27.00 – 28:30.32

don't specify, but you can use your imagination there.

28:33.02 – 28:43.44

But think of the arrogance of this too, before you even know whether these claims are legitimate

28:43.44 – 28:48.58

or not, whether there's any basis to them or not, before you even know what they're

28:48.58 – 28:54.80

about, we're going to proactively denialist this material.

28:54.80 – 28:58.94

Now, in the case of the Bill Gates thing, they actually made some errors, right?

28:58.94 – 29:06.98

Like there were some hashtag expose Bill Gates tweets that were, among other things, posted

29:06.98 – 29:08.88

true mortality rates of COVID.

29:11.04 – 29:16.24

And that was considered misinformation because it sent the wrong message about vaccination,

29:16.26 – 29:17.08

but it was true.

29:18.42 – 29:24.60

And so this is where we get into this whole area of we're going to choke off speech.

29:24.70 – 29:29.10

We're going to make it difficult for you to look up true facts.

29:29.10 – 29:34.56

We're going to make it hard for you to raise money to do the reporting that would come,

29:36.66 – 29:39.48

that would allow you to have a different opinion about anything.

29:39.70 – 29:42.60

I mean, it's just an extraordinary range of things.

2Speaker 2
29:42.60 – 29:48.68

Yeah, let's classify, define the pincer action here.

29:49.76 – 29:51.30

We can't stop you.

29:52.76 – 29:58.00
