Hey, it's Payne here. A brand new season of Up and Vanished is on its way. The new

00:05.42 – 00:10.38

season premieres this January, and I can assure you this is by far the most intense case I've

00:10.38 – 00:15.00

ever been a part of. In the meantime, between now and January, I'd love for you to check

00:15.00 – 00:19.50

out my new weekly podcast. It's called Talking to Death, where I interview different friends,

00:19.72 – 00:23.94

peers, celebrities, and plenty of other true crime podcasters. I wanted to share a clip

00:23.94 – 00:28.18

with you from the latest episode. I interviewed the hilarious and super talented comedian

00:28.18 – 00:33.68

Jeff Foxworthy, who believe it or not, is a huge Up and Vanished fan. We talk about the podcast

00:33.68 – 00:38.64

itself, the cases, what he thinks happened, and you can go listen to the whole thing right now

00:38.64 – 00:43.64

by searching for Talking to Death in your podcast app. I know everyone says this all the time and

00:43.64 – 00:48.20

it's super annoying. It would be super helpful if you could go subscribe, rate, and review my

00:48.20 – 00:52.42

new weekly show. And to make it worth your while, I'm going to give something cool away to entice

00:52.42 – 00:57.72

you. I'm giving away a brand new podcasting setup that includes pretty much everything I use to

00:57.72 – 01:04.00

record. A brand new RE20 microphone, my favorite Sony Studio headphones, a brand new Zoom H6

01:04.00 – 01:08.68

recorder, a Cloudlifter preamp, you'll have everything. Please go listen to the rest of my

01:08.68 – 01:13.36

new weekly show called Talking to Death, rate it on your podcast app, leave a review for it,

01:13.44 – 01:19.42

and somewhere in your review put UAV sent me for Up and Vanished. Just UAV sent me. Anywhere in

01:19.42 – 01:24.64

there. All right, that was a lot. Thank you for real for all your support. Stay tuned for an all

01:24.64 – 01:28.70

new season of Up and Vanished this January. And here's a clip from my interview with the

01:28.70 – 01:32.30

amazing Jeff Foxworthy from my new weekly podcast called Talking to Death.

1Speaker 1
01:35.68 – 01:42.86

I mean, so the Tara Grinstead thing, that's just probably two guys in a drunken moment

01:42.86 – 01:50.26

making a bad decision. 100%. That escalates like a snowball down a hill. Yep.

01:51.64 – 02:00.40

Now, so let me ask you this. So from your side of it, when you start pulling that thread,

02:01.52 – 02:06.30

you have no idea if there's going to be a satisfactory end at the end of it.

02:06.54 – 02:10.74

Not at all. Does that, as you're going through it, do you think,

2Speaker 2
02:11.12 – 02:16.30

oh crap, this may end up being nothing? I mean, you definitely have those moments of,

02:16.30 – 02:22.48

it's maddening, I'll put it that way. As a storyteller, innately, that is maddening to

02:22.48 – 02:30.60

not be in control of the ending in that way. Yeah. But it also propels me to get that ending.

1Speaker 1
02:30.94 – 02:37.26

Like a joke without a punchline. Yeah, exactly. You're doing the whole setup, but yeah.

2Speaker 2
02:37.56 – 02:44.04

Yeah. I've learned over the years that if I can get enough things lined up and avenues to go down,

02:44.04 – 02:52.64

I can see some sort of ending that will be satisfactory at the bare minimum. If I've become

02:52.64 – 03:01.38

convinced that these individuals did this, then I can do as much as I can to prove that.

1Speaker 1
03:03.22 – 03:15.46

Well, I think what you accomplished in that story probably propelled podcasts so far because then

03:15.46 – 03:21.88

people that were listening were like, hell, I might be able to be part of the solution to this.

03:22.06 – 03:24.04

Yeah. But did you ever have trepidation

03:24.04 – 03:28.96

as, hey, I'm poking a hornet's nest here and this might backfire on me?

2Speaker 2
03:28.96 – 03:33.00

Oh, a hundred percent. I mean, when I first started, I was like, this is pretty scary.

03:33.32 – 03:37.30

I shouldn't be doing this. Why am I poking around? Yeah, the people that did this may

1Speaker 1
03:37.30 – 03:42.14

just drive by and shoot me going down the road. Yeah. But in the headspace I was in though,

2Speaker 2
03:42.24 – 03:47.66

I felt like I had nothing to lose in my life at that point. My mom would probably be like,

03:47.74 – 03:51.74

yeah, your life. I'm like, yeah, mom, but like my life's not going so well right now. Right.

03:51.84 – 03:57.06

I felt like a failed artist or something. Okay. And so I really kind of was willing to take that

03:57.06 – 04:02.24

risk. It got the most serious once the arrests were made because I had a choice then to either

04:02.24 – 04:09.04

hang it up and just let it happen or keep investigating this now that I have two prime

04:09.04 – 04:15.64

suspects to look into. And I decided to keep going and I doubled down again. And we learned a lot

04:15.64 – 04:21.60

more about. Oh, a lot. What really happened. And that was a conscious decision that was probably

04:21.60 – 04:29.94

scariest because now law enforcement was stay out of my way. Right. Thanks, but go away now.

1Speaker 1
04:30.24 – 04:38.04

Stay out of my way, even though the work you were doing kind of got them to the point of being able

2Speaker 2
04:38.04 – 04:42.40

to make the arrest. Yeah. Like we'll take it from here. Yeah. I was like, okay. And I, you know,

04:42.40 – 04:47.60

I really, I've said this a few places, but all the years later when they finally had the trial,

04:47.60 – 04:55.04

Ryan Duke was found not guilty. And I was really just blown away that in the five years after these

04:55.04 – 05:03.26

arrests, they did really no other work to convict this guy. They really just kept the same exact

05:03.26 – 05:09.14

narrative. Like they were too stubborn about it. And every like every detail that we brought up

05:09.14 – 05:13.84

in the podcast and Up and Vanished that kind of poked a hole in it. Yeah. So, hey, that was for

05:13.84 – 05:19.06

you guys to look at and consider. And run with it. I'm not trying to, you know, damage your case,

05:19.22 – 05:24.66

but that's exactly what the defense did was use that kind of information that was,

05:25.00 – 05:30.96

that they could find on their own too. Right. It was just the truth. Yeah. I mean, it's,

1Speaker 1
05:32.80 – 05:38.80

yours is a little bit, at least as a comic, I have, I have a little more control of

05:39.36 – 05:44.96

how something ends. Totally. You know, while we both love a story,

05:46.20 – 05:50.12

I get to lead mine more than yours kind of leads you.

3Speaker 3
05:52.08 – 05:55.24

Please go listen to the rest of my new weekly show called Talking to Death,

05:55.24 – 06:01.00

rate it on your podcast app, leave a review for it. And somewhere in your review, put UAV sent me.
